Samir Nasri bags a goal and assist as City progress though the Champions League groups stages. Cesc Fabregas and Andre Schurrle are amongst the goals as Chelsea ease past Sporting at the Bridge. Emmanuel Adebayor is handed leave of absence by Spurs, Chris Smalling is ruled out for United, whilst Alan Pardew will continue to be cautious with Papiss Cisse’s pitch time.

City Make the Last Sixteen

Man City recorded a 2-0 victory over Roma last night to send them through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. Edin Dzeko was handed the lone striker role from the off, with Stefan Jovetic coming on to replace him in the 78th minute, though it was left to Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta to secure the win with a goal apiece.

The Scout Says: It’s five wins in five now for Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit, with morale sky high going in to their impending trip to Leicester. Last night’s display not only strengthens the case for investment in their assets, it proves that Manuel Pellegrini’s men are still more than capable of delivering without the stricken Sergio Aguero. Suddenly, it’s not all doom and gloom as we re-asses their prospects in light of last night’s win. David Silva and Jovetic marked their returns from injury with substitute appearances in Rome, whilst Pellegrini is optimistic that Vincent Kompany will be able to return for the weekend. Yaya Toure missed the match through suspension and, hence, will be refreshed for the Foxes clash, and with Nasri’s appeal as a midfield differential now on the rise after last night’s showing, it seems that Fantasy managers have a smorgasbord of options to choose from ahead of City’s excellent fixture list (lei, CPL, wba, BUR, SUN).

CHELSEA CRUISE PAST SPORTING

Chelsea drew their Champions League group stage campaign to a close last night with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon. With qualification already confirmed, Jose Mourinho chose to rest a number of his first-choice names for the match, and John Obi Mikel and Andre Schurrle took full advantage of the opportunity by getting their names on the scoresheet, adding to Cesc Fabregas’ early strike from the penalty spot.

The Scout Says: Mourinho’s decision to hand many of his star names the night off will have been music to the ears of many Fantasy managers. The likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and Willian failed to play any part and all look set to be restored to the XI at home to Hull this weekend as the league leaders attempt to atone for the loss to Newcastle last time out. In spite of his one-match suspension against the Tigers, Cesc Fabregas’ 45% ownership will also be encouraged, however, with the Spaniard proving himself to be first in line for spot-kicks when Hazard is off the pitch. Meanwhile, Diego Costa was afforded the full 90 minutes, but failed to score again, taking his drought to four matches in all competitions: food for thought for those intent on handing him the armband this weekend, with the Spain international the runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll so far.

ADEBAYOR HANDED LEAVE

A statement released by Tottenham yesterday confirmed that Emmanuel Adebayor has been given time out to return home for personal reasons, with the club making no further comment on the issue.

The Scout Says: Though Adebayor has struggled for inclusion recently, his likely absence for Spurs’ trip to Swansea this weekend will come as good news for owners of his team-mate Harry Kane, whose minutes continue to look assured since Mauricio Pochettino handed him a first league start of the season back in Gameweek 11. However, with so many managers now afforded the luxury of budget to spare after transferring out the stricken Sergio Aguero, cost-cutting is no longer a major issue for many – in spite of his 5.0 price tag, the 5%-owned Kane is only the fifteenth most popular forward for transfers in this week, ensuring he remains a differential option with matches against Burnley and Leicester following on from his Liberty trip.

UNITED LOSE SMALLING TO INJURY

Chris Smalling has been ruled out for at least a fortnight with the groin problem he sustained against Southampton on Monday night.

The Scout Says: The Man United defensive merry-go-round is still in full swing it seems, with Smalling’s two-week absence ensuring that the centre-back will miss home clashes with Liverpool and Newcastle, with a visit to Villa sandwiched in between. With Phil Jones still struggling due to a shin complaint, Jonny Evans looks set to step in if Louis van Gaal sticks with a trio of central defenders once again. United have only conceded once in their previous three at Old Trafford, suggesting investment in their rearguard could a valid tactic – with so many doubts surrounding their defensive spots, however, the 5.5-priced David De Gea is still the stand-out pick for those backing the Reds to show some solidity over the coming weeks.

PARDEW WON’T OVERWORK CISSE

Alan Pardew has confirmed that he intends to continue to use Papiss Cisse sparingly to lower the risk of the striker re-aggravating a knee injury:

“It is a situation with his knee which means we have to protect him. Could he have done that in the last 35 minutes if he had played the whole game? Probably not. He was fresh. There is one thing you do know – he will score.”

The Scout Says: Only three forwards have scored more goals than Cisse’s seven strikes up until this point, and the Magpies striker boasts the best goals-per-minute ratio in the league right now. However, there is no doubt that his lack of guaranteed pitch time continues to prove a major deterrent, even in light of his brace against Chelsea last weekend. Another issue is Newcastle’s poor upcoming schedule. With testing trips to Arsenal, United and Chelsea all awaiting Cisse in his next six, Pardew could be set to continue with the tactic of unleashing his star striker’s talents from the bench as defences tire towards the end of matches, suggesting that Ayoze Perez could retain his role as the lone forward in the Newcastle XI.

BRUNT DOUBTFUL FOR DERBY

Chris Brunt has revealed his involvement with this weekend’s derby clash with Aston Villa is in doubt due to the hamstring problem that forced him to miss Saturday’s draw with Hull:

“It’s just a small strain but it just depends how I react to the rehab. I’ll take advice from the medical staff but it’s a game I’m desperate to play in. It’s a game I’ve always enjoyed and one you look forward to.”

The Scout Says: With Stephane Sessegnon also a doubt alongside Brunt, Saido Berahino could be recalled to the Baggies’ attacking midfield three after being dropped to the bench last time out. The young forward hasn’t found the back of the net since Gameweek 9 and Alan Irvine has recently turned to Victor Anichebe as the Baggies lone striker, with Berahino utilised as a left winger in Gameweek 14. Should the 4.9-rated Nigerian recover from a groin injury as expected, he could well lead the line again against Villa on Saturday – causing further concern for Berahino’s 17% of FPL owners.

Thinking about playing Hutton over Wisdom... Normally always play the Home player but thinking I fancy a Villa side for a clean sheet more than WBA with Benteke against them.. Also expect he'll be more likely (though not very) for any attacking returns. Sound logic or stupid?

    Pantilimon/Elliot
    Baines, Hutton, Bertrand
    Sterling, Oscar, Hazard, Sánchez
    Kane, Bony, Dzeko
    (Wanyama, Duff, Yun Suk-Young)

    GW17: Sterling -> Yaya/Silva
    GW18: Oscar -> Ramsey
    GW19: Kane -> Austin

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Does Aguero's injury mean 3-5-2 is now the best formation. With Yaya, Ramsey and many more high priced midfielders doing well this does on paper look the best option.

Who already has this formation. Is it working? What are the pitfalls? And who is resolutely sticking with 3-4-3?

I've gone for a flexible front 8 for the festive period. This may help address the issue of Yaya's 5th YC and the heavy rotation that will take place.

Absolutely the way to go. No room for passengers on the cheap seats with so much action coming up and potential of festive colours being brandished in a disturbing way.

The forwards list is getting bigger, but the Agüero injury opened up the option of having 4 big midfielders, so all in all 3-4-3 is still the way to go.

How can you justify getting rid of Downing or Siggy when they provide such value though, especially the former who has form too.

Indeed you can´t especially if you bought them early on but you also have the option of putting them on your bench and safely play your best(expensive) 11 without fear of rotation.

I've had a "353" with Siggy/Downing/Kane rotating. I've had to cover for suspensions or injuries the last few weeks so having 8 forwards has helped massively. For example, I can easily absorb Austin being suspended without any fuss, and if Yaya gets booked, I have Siggy playing at Hull instead of being benched.

Yea switced to 3-5-2 this GW but that is more to do with Austin. But got 5 strong mids now so think will swap between 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 over the xmas period

A front 3 still gives us a great wealth of options through all budget brackets. At the top end we have Costa and potentially the Man U pair coming into a bit of form. In the middle bracket we have Pelle, Bony and maybe Benteke all performing well. And then in the budget bracket we have Austin and Sakho who I would pick before any similarly priced midfielder.3-4-3 for me wih a good 5th choice mid (currently Downing or siggy) to step up when needed

3-4-3/4-4-2 for me. Will rotate Clyne, Hutton and Austin for last spot.
Though of going with Bojan and switching to 3-5-2 but dont know whom to pick as my 5th mid.

I've gone for a happy medium with:

I wouldn't want to spend £30m on my frontline at the moment.

I think mids will score more as well. Remember 5pts for a goal not 4pts.

there are currently seven mids who have scored more than 70pts, while just four strikers have managed that - of those Aguero is injured. That leaves Pelle, Austin and Costa. And of those Pelle can be discounted due to form and fixtures.

Whereas in mids there is a huge array of choice among the top scoring FPL players so far.

Sanchez, Fabregas, Hazard, Siggy, Downing...that's five excellent players straight off. I'd be delighed with that quintet and bench Siggy for away games - he won't face Man U at Old Trafford again this season.

I am still quite happy having Wanyama as my 5th midfielder and in no hurry to cash in on Siggy & Downing. I've opted for a back 4 of Ivan-Azpi-Zabaleta-Bertrand for the next 5 GWs. I'll mostly be playing 4-4-2 and the odd 3-4-3.

      Ok my front 8 are:

      Hazard sanchez yaya siggy downing
      bony dzeko austin

The plan was to rotate siggy and austin home and away, but looking at the fixture list altogether i realize the better choice was to rotate siggy and downing. Austin fixtures somehow was never the worst.

Regardless, i get the flexibility to start a decent team for reasons of rest, yaya 5th yellow, fixtures.

Selling Aguero actually balances your team as there is so much more money to upgrade multiple positions. In terms of bang for your buck you have so many more quality midfielders than strikers at prices that don't break the bank comparatively; Fab, Haz, Siggy, Chadli, Sterling, Downing, Di Maria, Mata, Mirallas, Sanchez, Eriksen, I could go on and on. 3-5-2 for me is the way to go in the short term

Booze, dope & sheep. Where income inequality is getting worse increasing poverty. And surprise, surprise violent crime is increasing. Where the rich avoid tax by pumping their money into housing & getting tax free capital gains which results in an unaffordable housing market. When the bubble bursts there will be disastrous consequences.

They're just as bad as National. The origins of my story start with them i.e. Rogernomics. If we had a CGT, scraped income tax & raised GST to say 20% then things would right themselves. It would encourage saving & investment. This will never happen of course. I am concerned with our poverty & crime. Are we going to end up with the wealthy living in gated communities?

Should I worry having no city!?
Are Nasri Silva or Dzeko good options?
    Thanks

probably. Their "high" after beating Roma might just see them romp to another big win. 4-1 at Sunderland was their last away game fwiw 😉

No because their highest owned guaranteed starter is Yaya, and he's just on 10% ownership.
Too much guesswork in picking a player too.

I survived with no City for several weeks last year even though they had great fixtures. This time I'm not though, so yes, I would worry a bit. But there's so many good options, so you don't NEED City

    Hart
    Baines//Clyne//Naylor
    Siggy//Downing//Sanchez//Haz (c) //Boyd
    Costa//Benteke

    McCarthy - Dawson - Moore - Austin

Will try and sort out horrible bench over next couple of weeks.....

Thoughts on Aguero replacement for the following front 7? Don't think I need to take a hit this week

    Hazard Sanchez Sigurdsson Downing
    Costa Aguero* Bony

    A) Lukaku
    B) Dzeko

Aguero will most likely drop again in price before the weekend. Out of the two, I went for Dzeko--mainly cos my main rival in my ML already had Lukaku and I reason [read: hope] the Bosnian will start more games. That and the relatively easy fixture list should translate to decent attacking returns.

Yea will probably drop tonight. So will have to make a decision today - don't think lukaku will play tonight...was hoping Dzeko would put in a decent shift in CL. You reckon he will start?

Silva potentially starting would be a big plus...and Dzeko surely has to get some points over the next 5 like you say. Those fixtures...! I just know Lukaku will burn me....though MNF at home to QPR is tempting. Quite a mixed big of fixtures thereafter.

Lukaku is nailed on. Dzeko will most likely share some minutes with Jovetic [as both are back from an injury] and even possibly lose out to him if he's very poor. I'm banking on him because he will be the focal point of their attack and hope he gets a goal.

He is no Kun but I think he can get in some goals. A bit of a risk perhaps but it's worth the shot for me.

If lukaku, you will go without city coverage for their 6 excellent gameweeks.

Yea that's why I'm leaning toward punting on Dzeko - given City's form, they could very well go on a good run with Dzeko likely to lead the line. The fixtures do tilt it in his favour for sure.

Did my transfers and other than Chambers I am happy with this squad for the next few gws.

0.4 in bank so I could do get a 5.2 replacement for Chambers if he loses his place after his suspension. Also thinking of doing McCarthy > Panti for only 0.4 as rotation for Adrian, pave the way for panti / krul rotation from jan wc as panti is likely to rise.

    Adrian McCarthy
    Baines Azpi Taylor Chambers Hutton
    Sanchez Hazard Yaya Siggy Downing
    Bony Dzeko Austin

I'm planning to do the Panti in for 2nd GK with Adrian GW18. Looking at B Davies as my Chambers replacement next week if he can hold down his starting role. Who else you looking at instead of Chambers?

B davies too - if he can keep rose out even when rose is fit.

Though spurs defence dont give me confidence with those europa hangovers.

I understand the love for Downing, been a good scorer for me, but a trip up north east won't be easy, followed by LEI, chel, ARS, not easy fixtures over festive period.

Out of those fixtures, Chelsea might be the most difficult---But I won't rule out West Ham grabbing a win. They are on form, have the players to match Chelsea physically and even cause them to worry and in Carroll,Sakho & E.Valencia, that frontline will test Terry & Co.

I fully intend to play Downing through these 'difficult fixtures'
