Gameweek 17 rolls on via a stormy Tyne-Wear derby clash and the meeting of two top four hopefuls at Anfield.

Events begin at St James Park where Newcastle will attempt to halt rather catastrophic blip in their revival: they’ve lost their last two outings, shipping eight goals in the process. Local rivals Sunderland are unlikely to provide sympathetic opponents; the Black Cats have lost just once in their last seven league matches.

Alan Pardew’s men welcome back Sammy Ameobi and Cheick Tiote following recent knocks, while both Daryl Janmaat and Steven Taylor also return to bolster the back four, although with 17-year-old Jak Alnwick continuing in goal, the fragility in defence could well remain.

Gus Poyet’s men will look to exploit such a weakness as the Uruguayan makes just one change to his Sunderland starting XI, recalling striker Steven Fletcher with the much-maligned Jozy Altidore dropping to the bench. The visitors have been forced into a late change, however, with Anthony Réveillère sustaining an injury in the warm-up; Liverpool loanee Sebastián Coates is drafted into the back four.

The day’s action continues shortly after the whistle in the north east, as we drop in at Anfield to check on the progress of both Liverpool and Arsenal. Alexis Sanchez and a cast of mid-price differentials are on show, as the likes of Raheem Sterling and Olivier Giroud audition in a bid to boost their pre-Christmas Fantasy stock.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lol just seen that Charlie Austin was playing for Poole Town 4 years ago, in his last season he scored 18 goals in 10 games...

    Kinda worried bout defs...

    Guzan, (Jakupovic)
    Clyne, Azpi, Bertrand, (Bruce, Dawson)
Sanchez, Hazard (C), Downing, Jedinak, (Ameobi)
    Austin, RVP, Costa.

    0.4 ITB, 1 FT

    Need good suggestion here... Anyone?

Double Southampton defense is worrying although it worked out this week. Ditch Bertrand over Clyne

If Azpi starts today he may well get rotated for Luis in subsequent games. Swap for Zabaleta.

Take out one Saints defender at least for their three games against 3 top guns after the next game

that doesn't make any sense, both azpi and zaba were rested last game so why would azpi be more at risk of rotation than zaba?

        1. The Queen of England
          • 11 Years

Lately Mourinho has been rotating all three main full backs - Ivanovic, Azpi and Luis, as he clearly seeks to bring Luis into the team more. Luis scored a FK midweek too, so he's doing well. If I'm not wrong, he's started 3 games lately - CL, PL and Carling Cup.

What I am saying is that Azpi will probably start the Stoke game, but long-term, he won't be guaranteed to play every game. Luis will steal his minutes.

Zabaleta is the best way into the City defence, as Kolarov and Clichy at left back is bit of a minefield. Make sense?

Azpi hasn't missed a game since GW10. Clichy GW8, Zaba has been rested twice since GW8.

The way i see it is Azpi is likely to play all games now as he's the fittest of the lot.

He didn't play last week V Hull and he got 66 minutes the week before that, and he didn't play last CL game

    Early transfer question.
Is Williams better pick over Naylor? Naylor seems to get a yellow every game and Williams is more likely to get BPSs.

Similar team to mine. Looks good, only Mourinho will probably rotate Azpi, Chambers may not be guaranteed a starting berth in all games, and I have a fear that big Sam will bring in Valencia for Sakho at some point. Oh and Baines has become completely shite
