Martin Skrtel rescues a late point as Liverpool and Arsenal share the Anfield spoils. Olivier Giroud nets once again for the Gunners, whist Adam Johnson breaks Newcastle hearts by lashing home an injury-time winner in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park.

Giroud and Cazorla Form Continues

The duo rolled up to Anfield on the back of a brace apiece in last week’s 4-1 win over Newcastle and maintained their strong recent showings in a four-goal thriller. Giroud’s goal means he has now scored four times in six appearances since returning from injury, whilst an assist from Cazorla took his tally to three goals and a pair of assists in his last five. Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck were fielded on the flanks once again to accommodate the Frenchman up front and whilst the Chilean’s owners will have reservations in light of a single strike in six, next weekend’s home clash with QPR should afford him another chance to impress.

At the back, the Gunners continue to look porous in the absence of Laurent Koscielny. Mathieu Debuchy’s first goal of the season suggests that, at a price of 5.2, he could be one to consider if his compatriot returns quickly to help raise their resilience.

Liverpool Midfielders in the Points

For many Fantasy managers, yesterday was an opportunity for Raheem Sterling to stake a claim for a return to our 15-man squads. Handed the central role up front as Brendan Rodgers kept faith in a 3-4-3 formation, Sterling failed to replicate his midweek brace at Bournemouth and was instead overshadowed by Philippe Coutinho’s first-half strike, whilst Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana earned an assist apiece as the Reds salvaged a late point.

The fixtures are now very much in Liverpool’s favour – a trip to Burnley is followed by back-to-back home clashes with Swansea and Leicester before they make their way to Sunderland and Villa. Having fired 27 shots in yesterday’s 2-2 (and 19 in last week’s loss at United), Liverpool have certainly upped their attacking intentions since the new system was introduced and their main men may well force themselves into our plans if they can take advantage of such a schedule.

Skrtel to the Rescue for Reds

The big centre-half header home a late, late leveler to earn the home side a deserved share of the spoils. Liverpool went into yesterday’s match with three clean sheets in the previous four in front of their own fans and whilst they failed to keep the Gunners at bay, Skrtel’s equaliser continued his excellent recent record at Anfield – he’s racked up 34 points in the last five matches on Merseyside. Yesterday’s strike was his first of the season – a far cry from last term’s seven-goal heroics, though the Slovakian has upped his frequency of attempts considerably this term, averaging an effort every 130 minutes compared to 226 minutes in 2013/14.

Defiant Pantilimon Keeps Magpies at Bay

The Black Cats stopper took his tally to 44 points in just eight first-team outings yesterday – an average of 5.5 points per appearance. Aside from their 4-1 home mauling at the hands of City in Gameweek 14, Sunderland have conceded just three goals in their other seven matches with the big Romanian between the sticks. Pantilimon’s seven saves, allied with a couple of bonus points, earned him a second double-figure haul over that period and he remains a real bargain at just 4.5 ahead of back-to-back showdowns with Hull and Villa.

Johnson Leaves it Late

The Wearsiders’ wide man is slowly rediscovering his form after a barren first few months. Johnson managed just a single goal over the opening 15 rounds of fixtures but, after providing the assist for Jordi Gomez’ strike last week, he stepped up once again to fire a 90th-minute winner to seal the points. Whilst his last-gasp strike grabbed the headlines, it remains to be seen whether Johnson, or indeed any of Gus Poyet’s side, can stake a claim for our consideration – given that Sunderland have scored just four goals in the last seven Gameweeks, the safer bet would be on their backline.

    I'm happy with my team thus far, however I have one injured player and am looking to transfer him out in order to get a full playing team for over the Christmas period.

    So thoughts on the best 4.8mill or lower midfielder until Jan WC please?

    I asked this earlier this morning, just a follow up. Falcao scored on the weekend, but Utd also dropped points. Fellaini and ADM will probably come back into the lineup, so Falcao is a very risky starter, right? It's a shame, because we all know how good he can be, and some of his team mates (RVP and Carrick) rave on about him in training

    1. Dr Dream
      • 13 Years
      11 years, 3 months ago

      Fell and ADM don't pose a risk to Falcao. The risk to Falcao comes from whatever crack pot formation LVG decides to go with each week...and where Rooney plays.

                Agree with the latter, but Giroud is much better at holding the ball up. He isn't 100% at the moment, but has still been much more efective that Welbeck. Welbeck doesnt win headers, his movement isn't as good, and just doesnt score goals.

      He bought a croc..a player that is renown for being a croc. He got lucky for a while last season but he might be in for a big let down if he's gonna start relying on him for a resurgence.

        Yea, he was supposed to be out 4 weeks before the latest setback. But suddenly he's on the pitch after 2.5 weeks after Rodgers says Sturridge return is key. 100% rushed back and it's probably Rodger's own fault.

        Dropping Mignolet seems like another bad decision. So is keeping all strikers by trade on the bench despite an obvious toothlessness in front of goal.

    Since I can't do Siggy Sakho > Downing Austin without doing a 3rd transfer & -4 hit (0.1 over the budget)
    Thinking Sakho Clyne Siggy > Milner JT Austin for a hit.

    Team is Guzan/Alnwick - Clyne/Naylor/Vergini/Hutton/Yun - Hazard/Yaya/Sanchez/Siggy/Boyd - Rooney/Costa/Sakho. Been floundering for the past 2 weeks, just inside 20k.

    Guzan, Gilks
    Baines, Cahill, Wisdom, Clyne, Taylor
    Hazard, Sanchez, Siggy, Downing, Marney
    Costa, Giroud, Austin

    2ft, 3.2m in account.

    Silva/Zaba in for Siggy/Baines..
    Can upgrade Marney then to a 6m mid then the GW after.

    Good moves??

    Baines owners, I guess we're keeping for (STK) despite 6 points in 6 games?

    Taken from City's Bluemoon Forum:

    " I personally would be very surrpised if there aren't significant changes between the 2 games. Certainly that is the indicator from last year when Pellegrini made 6 changes from the team that played Liverpool to the one that struggled against Palace.

    At the back Zab, Lescott and Kolorav were replaced by Clichy, Nasty and Boyata. In the middle and up front Nasri, Ya Ya and Negredo were replaced by Milner, Garcia and Dzeko. He used 3 subs in the game - Negredo, Nasri and Kolorav.

    Interestingly YaYa was on the bench and not used. "

    Injuries etc this year may influence Pellegrini's thinking but.....

      I wouldn't look too much into fan forums, they usually think they know more then the manager and post ludicrous ideas and suggestions

      Silva should be safe after a 60 min sub....

    Any other Baines owners getting twitchy? He's not really delivering the goods, but the fixtures seem decent enough

    One more week?

      I sold him a while back, but this is the problem with Baines. Any other premium defender giving those kinds of returns would be long gone, but there's always the fear that the week you sell him will be the week he gets a pen, a clean sheet, and 15 points.

      He's an unusual case because you can actually put an exact points figure on what you're scared will happen if you sell him: the legendary Baines 15 pointer.

    Green Krul
    Clichy Azpi Baines Bertrand Dummet
    Sanchez Hazard Silva Jedinak Cattermole
    Costa Austin Kane
    Already taken - 4 hit to get Silva and Austin...
    Feel like its enough but have 2,9m itb so have options like to upgrade Jedinak or double City-defense and get rid of Baines
    A) Baines -> Zabaleta for a hit
    B) Jedinak -Downing, Cazorla
    C) Wait and Baines out next
    D) Wait and Jedinak out next
    E) Other ideas?

    Despite a poor gameweek(35 with 2 to play), would you save a FT?

    Hamer;
    Baines, Azpilicueta, Hutton;
    Sánchez, Hazard, Yaya Touré, Sigurdsson;
    van Persie, Bony, Austin.

    Elliot; Wisdom, Yun, Albrighton.

    1FT; £0.0m ITB.

    A few facts about Santi Cazorla over the past 4 GWs:

    - 9 key passes
    - 13 goal attempts (Most from midfielders)
    - Out of the 13 attempts, hit the target 5 times (Second most from all midfielders)
    - Involvement in 22 goal attempts
    - Received 3 big chances (Most from midfielders) – converted all 3
    - Created 2 big chances (Second only to Stewart Downing)

      Yh ive been really considering him esp since I dont have Sanchez. Only thing putting me off is hes on 4 YC and he is £0.2 more than I can afford unless i take a hit to get him 🙁

      Yeah, all season he's been getting on the end of moves, and then smashing the ball (trying too hard) over or wide. It's one of those where you know that when the first goal comes, he'll get on a run of scoring. Same thing happened with Ramsey's run last year. Went from missing 2 chances every game, to scoring 2.

        Yep. Confidence is key & right now he's full of it. That Panenka penalty was class.
