Here we go again, then. Less than 48 hours after Gameweek 18 got underway, the next round of fixtures is already thrust upon us – with only a handful of official news updates yesterday, though, we are mainly left to assess the lay of the land after Friday’s fixtures.

Phil Jagielka (hamstring) and Tim Howard (calf) are both likely to miss Everton’s trip to Newcastle after the pair was forced off with injuries in the home loss to Stoke. Kevin Mirallas and John Stones will be assessed after the duo sustained knocks in Friday’s 1-0 defeat. Mo Besic is hoping to shrug off an illness in time, though Steven Naismith is set to serve a one-match ban after topping off the Suspension Tightrope.

Olivier Giroud serves the first of a three-match ban as Arsenal head to West Ham this afternoon after his Boxing Day dismissal at home to QPR. Laurent Koscielny “has a chance” of making the match, though Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain “has an ever smaller chance” after missing Friday’s match with a groin problem.

Marouane Fellaini is ruled out of Man United’s trip to Spurs with a broken rib, whilst Adnan Januzaj is set miss out through illness. United are awaiting scans on the pelvic problem that forced Angel Di Maria out of Friday’s win over Newcastle. Judging by Ashley Young’s Instagram account, it seems Luke Shaw is back in the squad for the trip to White Hart Lane.

Gabby Agbonlahor will miss Aston Villa’s home encounter with Sunderland due to suspension. The forward earned his fifth yellow of the season away to Swansea and will serve a one-match ban.

Mark Hughes will check on Bojan (back) and Phil Bardsley (calf) ahead of the derby visit of West Brom, whilst Ryan Shawcross is expected to start despite picking up a head knock at Everton.

Fraizer Campbell is a doubt as managerless Palace travel to London neighbours QPR just 24 hours after the dismissal of Neil Warnock. The forward limped off just after the break in Friday’s home loss to Southampton.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy is also unavailable after earning his fifth caution of the campaign in Gameweek 18, whilst Andy King has been ruled out with the knock that forced him off against Spurs.

Brad Jones is likely to miss Liverpool’s home clash with Swansea after being forced off with a thigh injury in the first-half of Friday’s win at Burnley. Simon Mignolet is set to return to the starting XI after being dropped due to poor form in recent weeks.

Stevan Jovetic and Vincent Kompany could return for City’s home clash with Burnley, according to reports. The former has stepped up his recovery from another hamstring problem and was an unused sub in Friday’s win at West Brom.

Andrew Robertson is a doubt for Hull due to a hamstring problem. James Chester misses the visit of Leicester through suspension, whilst Jake Livermore returns after serving a similar one-match ban.

Carl Jenkinson is unavailable to face parent club Arsenal at Upton Park later today, whilst Sam Allardyce still has doubts over James Tomkins’ ongoing hamstring problem.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of this morning’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

I did actually think about that.

          CS + assist + bap = 10pts

Just the extra CS point & goal point swings it for me.....plus Palace will put up a better fight than Burnley

The problem with Silva is that the goals can come from anywhere for City. Yaya, Nasri, Zab, Lamps, etc. Maybe even Jovetic if he gets a run out. So say City win 3-0 which seems reasonable, what are the chances that Silva will get those goals?

Of the 39 City have scored, Silva has 5 goals + 3 assists (e.g. involved in c.20% of goals)
Obviously he's been injured a bit, so cut that down to the 12 games that he's been in, there have been 25 goals scored, meaning Silva has been involved in 32% of goals.

Assuming a 3-0 win then, you could reasonably expect that Silva would score or assist in at least one goal.

(If you wanted to go absolutely macro you could say, what's the ratio without Aguero? In this case it's 3 matches player, 7 goals scored of which Silva scored 3 and assisted 1 - hence a ratio of c.57% involvement but the sample size is small).

On the flip side for QPR, Austin is their target - if they score (and you have to fancy they will vs a rudderless Palace out of form) then it's far more likely he'll get the points.
In the 21 goals QPR have score, Austin has 12 goals and 3 assists.
Of the 16 games he's played in, he's been involved in 15 out of 20 goals. In other words he's been involved in 75% of goals or almost 1 goal per game.

Assume a result like 2-1 and that QPR will score at least 2 against Palace and you've got to expect that Austin will score at least one.

Of course there are lies, damn lies and statistics AND there's the factor of an extra point per goal and point for clean sheet (which you'd have to expect City will claim) affecting things, but on goal-involvement alone it's hard to look further than Austin.

I'm not convinced goalkeepers are worth transfers to be honest, because they often make up for tough fixtures with save points.

So on that basis, I would do A, although I'm a fan of Siggy.

  22. Matt

    11 years, 3 months ago

Here's my predicament, I have three solid choices of who to captain in my head: Austin, Costa, Zabaleta (don't have Silva).

Now if I were chasing, then I'd be tempted to go with Costa/Zabaleta, and if I was leading I would go with Austin. My rank is 32k, so I'm not in the lead by a long shot, but I am winning my mini-league. Do you think chasing the overall pack warrants captaining Costa/Zabaleta or should I play safe and captain Austin? My ML rival doesn't even have Austin, so that's a bonus already.....

I hate this time of the week

People are really struggling today with having such a good front 8. Giving yourselves such needless headaches. This is why (I think anyway) you need a 5th mid bench fodder. I.e. A Boyd etc.
People benching Kane - Spurs top scorer against a weak Utd defence. Bony - a proven goal scorer vs a shaky Liverpool defence. I've even seen someone mention benching Hazard.

    Craziness.
5th bench fodder midfielder required, else you give yourself a difficult headache moment every week and after all the games are played post "ahh I had XX on the bench"

    Chambers ➡ Zaba

    worth the hit?

won't field an XI if Chambers is benched.
    Also Zaba rising, Chambo falling
