The New Year heralded in a number of injury concerns earlier today, with treatment rooms around the country opening their doors to accommodate a host of new arrivals.

Arsenal
Mathieu Flamini missed today’s 2-0 loss at Southampton through injury, whilst Arsene Wenger has
confirmed Lukas Podolski was unavailable after sustaining a groin problem.

Aston Villa
Skipper Ron Vlaar was forced off during the first-half of today’s goalless draw against Palace with a knee injury. Post-match, Paul Lambert confirmed the Dutchman is set to be assessed prior to the weekend:

“I am not 100% sure but he’s thinking it could be the same sort of thing that he hurt in the World Cup. It’s his knee. We will probably know more tomorrow. He will go for a scan. Hopefully it’s not too bad. He thinks it might be similar to the one he had in Brazil. We will have to wait and see.”

Burnley
Sean Dyche is counting the cost of today’s comeback draw at Newcastle, after Jason Shackell (calf), Dean Marney (illness) and Kevin Long ((ankle) were forced off. The Burnley boss is sweating over the latter’s availability, with the debutant stretchered off in the 3-3 stalemate:

“Kevin is the big question mark. It needs to settle and the medical team will get on that over the next couple of days. We are hopeful Shacks is not as bad as we maybe first thought and Dean is just sickness. He was almost vomiting before the game and it is a strange one. ”

Everton
Kevin Mirallas started on the left of a front three away to Hull but was withdrawn at the break, with Roberto Martinez confirming:

“Kevin was feeling a little bit sore at half-time and we needed everyone to be 100% in order to be dynamic.””

Hull
Andrew Robertson is set for x-rays on his ankle and foot after a challenge from Everton’s Mo Besic forced him off on 23 minutes today. Liam Rosenior was withdrawn before the hour mark due to a hamstring problem, whilst Gaston Ramirez was subbed off at the break as a result of his ongoing groin complaint.

Leicester
Danny Drinkwater was replaced by David Nugent on 36 minutes after picking up an injury during the 2-2 draw at Liverpool.

Liverpool
Adam Lallana’s recent run of form was halted earlier today due to injury. The Reds midfielder was subbed off early in the second period, with Brendan Rodgers confirming post-match:

“He’s got a tweak in his thigh, so we’ll see how that is.”

Mario Balotelli missed out altogether after sustaining an injury in training.

Man United
Ashley Young could be set for a period on the sidelines, according to Louis van Gaal, after he was forced off during today’s draw at Stoke.

“He has a hamstring injury. He’s out for many weeks, I think. But I’m not a doctor so we have to wait for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.”

Newcastle
The Magpies look poised to be without Steven Taylor for the remainder of the season. Caretaker boss John Carver confirmed the worst after the centre-half was taken off during today’s draw with Burnley:

“Unfortunately there’s bad news with Steven. It looks like he’s snapped his Achilles tendon – the other one (to which he injured against Chelsea in December 2011). It’s a fresh injury and I’m so disappointed for him because he got off to a great start. He’s a good character and he’ll deal with it. We’ll make sure he’s looked after and everything will be done properly.”

Southampton
The Saints’ in-form wide man Sadio Mane was withdrawn after scoring his third goal in as many matches in today’s win over Arsenal. After the 2-0 triumph, Ronald Koeman is uncertain whether Mane – who is soon set to fly to the African Cup of Nations with Senegal – will be available for the weekend FA Cup clash with Ipswich:

“I have to wait until Friday, I don’t know what happened exactly, we will know more then if he is available for Sunday or not.”

Sunderland
Santiago Vergini was withdrawn on 77 minutes after picking up a knock in the Black Cats’ narrow loss at City. Lee Cattermole failed to make the Etihad trip due to a groin problem, Gus Poyet has confirmed.

Tottenham
Erik Lamela missed today’s stunning win over Chelsea with a minor calf complaint, whilst Ryan Mason limped off with a hamstring injury in the first period.

West Brom
Craig Gardner missed the Baggies 1-1 draw at West Ham with a calf problem, whilst fellow midfielder Graham Dorrans was subbed off through injury late on.

West Ham
The Hammers have concerns over today’s scorer Diafra Sakho, who was forced off with a recurrence of a back problem. The Senegal striker will be hoping to recover in time to fly off on international duties in the African Cup of Nations next week.

“We have to have a scan on it and see what condition his back is in. Obviously it’s a similar situation to when he last came back from [international duty with] Senegal, so on Friday the lads will send him for a scan and we’ll see how it goes from there”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    RE: Kane or Ings.

    AUSTIN

Just been pouring over the stats again. I really can't bring myself to lose Austin, I think it's going to have to be just one of Kane OR Ings!

    INGS OR KANE

It's really hard to ignore Kane, he does pip Ings in just about every stat over the last 4 gameweeks - but it's actually closer than you might imagine.

I am going to foolishly ignore goals, and say that on average they are matching each other for goal attempts, with Kane having one more shot inside the box than Ings. Also, let's not forget that Ings has had tougher opposition... with tot, LIV, mci, new versus BUR, lei, MUN, CHE for spurs. It is hard to ignore that CHE game though!

    CONCLUSION

    They are both good picks.

Kane is probably the sensible choice, given his form and the inevitable price rise over this important WC period. However, with 1.7% ownership for Ings, versus 19.2% for Kane - I think he might just be the differential I've been looking for.

WELCOME TO MY TEAM DANNY INGS.

Yes, I think Ings will outscore Kane points wise over the next 3. Before I WC.

it was a question that was asked umpteen times yesterday. bench downing was the consistent reply. Me, I never make mistakes... like getting in zab for the last 3 weeks, or benteke for the last 2, or bony before that...

My Final thoughts on Kane and some reasons why so many benched that most already realise.
Let me say first I too benched Kane over Siggy.
I copped Kane a few weeks ago and bought him in recognising both a bargain and the enablement factor he offered, and also he had form to be fair.
A few points on why he was benched:
    - the Aguero cash
    - Austin
    - template forward line of Costa/Austin/Kane
    - 4.5 mids suddenly became > Silva/Sterling
    - 3-5-2 became fashionable
    - lots of cash in defence
    - an unprecedented look of quality across our teams.
    - Siggy scored Monday night away
    - that Mean Chelsea defence
    - bench a 'cheap' forward
    - I think the damage hadn't been as bad for those that benched.

Benching Kane was the correct decision in my opinion. If you replayed the game 1000 times he probably doesn't do that again.

Up to 5th 😀 getting more worried about TFF and NABIL than those in the overall standings!
Still deciding what to so with Bony, have 7 to start without him. Will jump on board whoever is rising next.

              Very nice 🙂
The standard in the league is outrageous!!

I played Kane over Mata, went for form over fixtures and potential over pedigree. You can use whatever logic you want, but it's decisions like that which ultimately define your position at the end of the season.

RP: Guys, how is this wildcard team looking? Had 4 straight red arrows so decided to go for it. WBA/Soton double up at the back rotates pretty well.

    Foster / Forster

    Lescott / Alderweireld / P.Jones / Terry / Hutton

    Hazard / Fabregas / Downing / Tadic / Sanchez

    Falcao / Austin / Kane

Leaves 1.9m ITB to swap Falcao to Kun when he's back.

I think that, if you have 3 CHE in Feb, then one of them has to be a defender - mainly because of the (very real) threat of them making the CoC final. For the blank week benching the defender and selling one of the mid/fwd would leave a better chance for a competitive team.

No. However be mindful that Mane is out to AFCON. New signing is replacing him on the wing, but won't play every 90. Both Toby and Berty will push forward more because of this.

Sitting at a rank of 420ish before yesterday. Probably the worst GW I've ever had. 28pts and Kane on the bench. Probably not the only one but very disappointing nonetheless . Outside the top 1k now. What do I do with this team? 2 free transfers and £1.5m ITB. Thinking of sorting out defence but don't really know who to bring in.

    Terry for Zabaleta?
    Baines?

    Guzan Jakupovic
    Zabaleta, Baines, Clyne, Chambers, Wisdom
    Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Downing, Siggy
    Rooney, Kane, Austin.

Also, bench Siggy (WHU) or Rooney (SOU) for the next GW?

Silva to Fab, Baines to Terry. That Chelsea performance won't be repeated.

      Baines to Terry
      Siggy or Downing to Fabregas?

Can't afford Siggy/Downing to Fab but it's a good idea. Going off Siggy a bit.

He's about the same level as Dier isn't he? Young squad player.

Hard to tell - Poch quite loyal to an XI so if he starts he stays I reckon

Quite like the look of Ward-Prowse as the 5th midfielder - only £4.8 million and very good stats.

He should have had a couple yesterday, but considering he's recently returned to full fitness it's a very good shout

    Hi guys,

I think a defensive transfer is in order this week, but not really sure where to start:

    Clyne Baines Chambers Cissokho Dummet

The first three are all giving me a headache at the moment, but not sure if switching Baines to Terry is preferable to swapping Chambers for someone who actually plays - 0.6 in the bank so could be SUN, WBA or Alderweireld. I think the rest of my team is pretty tight, so not keen on WC'ing.

Selling. Not because of price, but because of points.
