Romelu Lukaku’s late leveller keeps Everton in the FA Cup after a 1-1 home draw with West Ham. Leighton Baines and Andy Carroll head into the weekend as injury doubts after missing out at Goodison. Luke Shaw and Daley Blind could return for United’s clash with Southampton, reports grow of a possible move to City for Wilfried Bony, whilst Wojciech Szczesny looks poised to be re-installed between the sticks for Arsenal this weekend.

LATE LUKAKU STRIKE KEEPS EVERTON’S HOPES ALIVE

Everton boss Roberto Martinez made three changes to his side for their FA Cup meeting with West Ham last night, returning to a flat back-four after recently trialling three in defence. Sylvain Distin, Bryan Oviedo and Romelu Lukaku were brought in, with the latter notching a 92nd-minute leveler to earn his side a replay.

Distin sustained a groin problem and was forced off after 71 minutes of the tie, whist Leighton Baines missed out entirely with a knock, though Martinez confirmed that he expects the left-back to be fit in time for their weekend clash with City:

“Baines picked up a knock in the last game – it’s nothing serious, we’re just making sure he’s fully fit and we’re not taking any risks. Expect him to be available for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: Despite the late celebrations, there’s no doubt that this is still a troubling time for the Toffees, who have won just once in their last nine domestic matches. To compound matters, the Merseysiders are rated second worst in our ticker for the next five fixtures, which involves encounters with City, Liverpool and Chelsea, suggesting that their toils could well continue. Lukaku will be optimistic that his strike will see him recalled in the league after having had to settle for a bench role in the last two Gameweeks, though he, like Baines, is unlikely to tempt much investment with the Toffees’ schedule and form in mind, with many current owners likely to ditch the duo’s services with their winter Wildcards.

HAMMERS PEGGED BACK

Sam Allardyce opted to make four changes to his West Ham team for last night’s cup clash, with Alex Song, Diafra Sakho, Cheik Kouyate and Andy Carroll those to drop out in favour of Matt Jarvis, Kevin Nolan, Enner Valencia and Mark Noble. James Collins retained his place in the Hammers’ backline, despite the availability of James Tomkins, and netted the opener from a Morgan Amalfitano corner.

Post-match, Big Sam revealed that Carroll missed out with a foot injury sustained in training:

“Andy kicked the floor in training and obviously his foot’s a bit sore so we didn’t bring him with us. We didn’t (want to) risk the fact that if he’d played today it would’ve probably got worse.”

In better news, however, it has been confirmed that Song will now miss the African Cup of Nation (ACoN) with Cameroon and be available for the Hammers throughout January, after announcing his retirement from international football.

The Scout Says: Is it possible for Carroll to go a couple of months without picking up a fresh injury? His Fantasy owners will be despairingly asking that question, with his role in this weekend’s trip to Swansea now hanging in the balance. With Sakho either injured or jetting off to the ACoN, Allardyce will be desperate to have the big Geordie fit as soon as possible, though a prolonged absence could see Valencia profit; the 6.4-valued forward looks set for a return to the starting XI in the league anyway, though could be the sole focus of the Hammers’ attack if no other striker is available to line up beside him. Big Sam will at least take comfort in Song’s imminent return from Africa, with the Barcelona loanee now set to hand the Londoners a major boost in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, yesterday’s match saw Stewart Downing draw his fourth consecutive blank in all competitions, and with the Hammers’ problems building ahead of him in attack, an exodus of his 25% ownership could be on the cards, bearing in mind his next six (swa, HUL, liv, MNU, sou, tot).

BONY TRANSFER RUMOURS INTENSIFY

A number of reports yesterday revealed that Swansea striker Wilfried Bony is on the verge of a £30 million transfer to Man City after the two clubs entered talks earlier this week.

The Scout Says: Manuel Pellegrini insinuated at the start of the month that City could do business in the January transfer window, and it’s seemingly taken little time for the Chilean to put his money where his mouth is. The Bony news will, however, dishearten many Fantasy managers, with the forward’s potential position in the Sky Blues’ pecking order a major drawback; with Sergio Aguero clearly the number one when fit, the Ivorian will surely be prone to rotation with Stevan Jovetic and Edin Dzeko, thus seriously denting the prospects of an asset who has proven so reliable over the past couple of seasons, scoring nine times already in the current campaign. Back at Swansea, meanwhile, life without Bony will surely be tough, though Bafetimbi Gomis’s prospects at 6.5 could be boosted if Garry Monk doesn’t decide to immediately splash the cash and find a replacement up front – with loanee Nelson Oliveira also in the mix, we could be handed a mid-price option to consider as the Swans leading man, should Bony indeed depart.

MAN UNITED HANDED INJURY BOOST

Reports suggest that Luke Shaw and Daley Blind could be in contention to face Southampton on Sunday after recovering from ankle and knee injuries respectively. The latter has been out of action since November but, having trained with United’s first team for the past two weeks, could now be ready to make his return.

The Scout Says: Having played every minute of the season prior to succumbing to injury, it seems fairly certain that Blind will be reinstated in Louis van Gaal’s first XI as soon as he reaches the right level of fitness. Likely to play alongside Michael Carrick in the middle of the park, his return could have a knock-on effect on Wayne Rooney’s position and see the United captain move behind the front two – after blanking for the past two Gameweeks, such a scenario would be welcome news for the 10.8-priced striker’s 22.5% ownership. With Angel Di Maria also in contention to start after a goalscoring substitute appearance against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup, United are beginning to build themselves back to full strength, and now have the fixtures in hand to flourish over their next six (SOU, qpr, LEI, whm, BUR, swa). It’s hard to see how Juan Mata might fit into their set-up now, though, and the Reds top scoring midfielder could find that his minutes are far from guaranteed from here on in.

SZCZESNY EYES STOKE START

Wojciech Szczesny is expected to return to Arsenal’s starting XI this weekend, despite off-field problems having supposedly jeopardised his place.

The Scout Says: Recent rumours surrounding the goalkeeper – which suggested he was set to be dropped for an indefinite period after a dressing room fall-out with Arsene Wenger – appear to be unfounded, then, with the 4.8-priced David Ospina now likely to return to the bench after being handed a start in the Gunners FA Cup win over Hull. The north London outfit have three great home fixtures in their next five (STK, AVL, LEI) to boost their appeal, though with a little uncertainty still surrounding the situation between the sticks , Mathieu Debuchy (5.2) and Per Metersaker (6.0) are still the most secure and stand-out options in their defensive ranks.

thats the thing. Spurs not getting credit. Kane + Chadli who is bak in form are decisive, and eriksen is class. thats why i was leaning erik. + cry defence is not last yr's Pulis.

Newcastle are very solid. think theyll score 1, hence terry potential 2 pter against eriksen potential of assist/goal in that spurs in form offence.

Okay. I can get the NEW/SUN rotation. And I would look for some kind of rotation at this point. But still, to me the thing is that Fab is likely to score more than Costa, and Giroud about as much, if not more, so to me the priority would be to have Cesc before Costa, and then Giroud just is much more appealing than Chadli. Can you not squeeze a bit elsewhere to get that GK rotation with Fab and G-Rude?

Chadli keeping pace with Fabregas in terms of PPG for £3m less.

And Costa is Costa. He's been very much written off on here in recent times.

Yes, I'm still torn. Agree on the Costa point. Difficult to dump him when he scores practically every week.
The lack of assists and bonus is very much real now, and has been for a long time. Here lies the problem 🙂

Costa's ppg is just awful for his price. You can easily have better elsewhere. I know Chaldi has scored well, but I doubt it continuing. He may prove me wrong, but for me the problem is that he is an uncertainty as he may get benched, and there's a reason to that, namely that he is not a very good player irl. Cesc will always be a first choice in Chelsea.

He's second in PPG for all strikers?

                Agüero, Costa, Austin.

I don't know what people want out of Costa, he was never going to score 2 or 3 a game every game.

But he will be key for Chelsea better than Giroud for Arsenal from now till season end and he's a viable captain pick and becoming quite differential around these parts.

I stopped writing my diplomathesis for this so please read and comment if you have an opinion:

Who's with me trying to abandon the idea of COVERAGE and DOUBLING-UP.
I think we need to analyse each player on his own. Obviously his team and teammates are to consider when picking a player or nit for your fantasy team but in terms of FPL and other fantasygames we're shouldn't be interested on how many chances a team creates but on how many the certain player gets.

If I have Walcott and Sanchez for example and Ozil+Caz+Rams+Giroud play an average 3 balls in behind the defense per game and each of Sanchez and Walcott convert an average 1,5 both players should be owned.

If Oscar+Matic+Fab play pick out Oscar and Hazard an average 3 balls and only the latter suggests that he is capable of converting them well regularly, then this is the reason why we only have Hazard.
If Oscar steps up, I will be more than willing to tripple up on Chelseas attacking.

I find myself in situations where I'm not willing to bring in Chadli because I have Kane although the Belgian scored 2 and assisted1 over the last two, he hit the post twice against Chelsea, has a super direct approach and Spurs are playing everything over their left hand side when Chadli plays (and yes he will keep playing, he was injured and eased back in) and they have easy fixtures.
But I wont because I don't like having too many eggs in one basket. that's stupid, isn't it)

This post isn't about Chadli though and I would like to hear your opinions on the dangers of doubling up, having no coverage (as if having Eriksen would have made me happy last week, if I had no other Spurs-player).

What I'm saying is, if someone asks "Should I bring in ADM, Fabregas or Silva for the next three?" my answer shouldn't be,"what does the rest of your team look like?", because it's down to the three player's stats, performance and capability in the next three and only that. Right?

But what does that have to do with doubling up? Or do you mean, not thinking of doubling up as "doubling up" but as choosing two players who accidentally are from the same team? But the reason for choosing defenders often is their team, and correctly so.

      1. Jimmys Burden
        • 12 Years

doubling up in attack. yes two players from the same team

Alright. I have never thought of that as doubling, really. I might actually think that if I think someone in the team is likely to score well, then it is likely that someone else does too. Depends on the team, but e.g. Sakho was scoring goals decently, and that gave good amount of assists to Downing, so it made sense to have them both at the time.

I saw Granville suggesting yesterday that he wouldn't be keen on doubling up on Arsenal attack with Walcott and Sanchez. I think we will have to. Both players will be scoring big even if Arsenal will not be scoring more goals than they do now. Walcott will play instead of Welbeck/Ox and take away goals from others and they probably also will score more goals. Walcott makes good runs and is a decent finsiher. He is (kind of) OoP and always gold in fantasy and giving away Sanchez is just madness

      1. Camp No No

But in this barren spell, he still managed 43 points only 4 few than Fabregas who was a great performer according to everyone. I know he's a bit cheaper as well but Sanchez has by far the best PPG in total and isn't looking likely to get worse

          1. Camp No No

Sanchez costs 2m more than Fab.

Btw, he's missed only one match, his ppg is slightly, but only slightly better than Hazard's. More importantly 44% of his points came in a 4 game flat track stint before the GW 12. If you didn't have him before it, you just missed it and that's it. I see no reason to have him unless Arsenal has plenty of fixtures against the bottom table in short period.

Would try and fit in a Chelsea defender which would mean removing one of your Chelsea players - I'd Suggest Costa and then replace him with someone like Kane

Also, I think Di Maria, and Aguero is a risk as Aguero probably won't start and may not play at all and it's not guaranteed ADM will start either due to not long being back from a long injury lay off, then you're relying on your bench.

Also Vlaar is nursing a slight injury and so may not feature against Leicester and then Villa's Next fixtures are Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea.

Clyne is also yellow flagged so maybe go Clyne > Bertrand to start with.

Cazorla wont be dropped, moving wide. He's been Arsenals best performer (not only FPLwise) except for Sanchez. Ozil might even play left or right as he had to before his injury

        1. Demí
          • 14 Years
          10 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, i agree he's been their best player. Just saying where Ozil would most likely play if he started. If Ozil plays wide, then it barely leaves space for Walcott and i'm think Wenger will want him to be starting week in week out soon.

I can only see it being 3 of Cazorla, Walcott, Ozil, Alexis behind Giroud so with that competition, Cazorla has to miss out some time.

Yeah, none are of the required quality for Arsenal to push on. Could see Wenger make a move this month, but if not, Arteta is surely first in the pecking order there

Actually Arsenal's problems are way exaggerated. It's utter scoreboard journalism. In terms of quality and quantity of chances created and conceded, which in the long run correlates very well with points, they've been playing 2nd strongest in the whole league and have just got results way lower than what would be the expected.

silly the way people on this site say something like 'zarate will knick austins' points then it becomes gospel. have you not considered that zarate will make QPR a better team and create more chances for him?

Only goalkeep combination I havent seen profiled yet in any wildcard article is the one Im doing. Pants and Guzan. Cost of just £9.2 and look at their fixtures from 24 thro to 38. Not only that but you also picking 2 established premier league sides and not relyingon Burnley in your combination.

I sort those tables on big chances conceded as that's where the goals come from. On that basis your table tells me Villa and Sunderland rotating would do me just dandy.

Decided to gamble on Burnley, with two "easy" home games ahead of them, Boyd looks certain deal, also Heaton is a bargain keeper and one of few penalty savers this season, couldn't decide between Trippier and Ings, but in the end stuck to Kieran, because Barnes is a scorer as well and Vokes is coming back after scoring in a Cup:)

    Hazard (NEW)

    Silva (Eve)
    Sterling (Sun)
    Sigurdsson (WHU)

    Rooney (SOU)
    Kane (Cpl)

    How about this WC defence?

    Foster, Pantilimon
    Terry, Clyne, Aldeweireld, Wisdom, Hutton

    Terry will play every match.

I can play Clyne virtually every match due to his attacking threat.
