Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Chelsea’s home encounter with managerless Newcastle makes Eden Hazard the runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll. The Belgian’s outstanding festive form has seen him rise to the top of the midfield standings, and having scored in five of his last six at the Bridge – serving up four sets of double-figure hauls in the process – he’s earned 43% of the votes cast.

Hazard’s team-mate Diego Costa has been selected by 15% of voters. The summer signing has also scored in all but one of his last six but has delivered only one 10+ points return since Gameweek 4.

Harry Kane’s rise to Fantasy prominence is underlined by his spot in third position. After serving up an 18-point haul at home to Chelsea on New Year’s Day, just under 11% are looking to hand the Tottenham frontman the armband as he heads to Palace.

Alexis Sanchez is backed by 6% as Arsenal prepare for the visit of Stoke. With Olivier Giroud back in contention, however, the Chilean may be set for a role on the flank once again, though his last six scores at the Emirates (13, 16, 2, 9, 9, 10) underlines his potential, with only United keeping him at bay.

Raheem Sterling’s role in the centre of Liverpool’s new 3-4-3 formation has convinced 4% to back him for the trip to Sunderland. A goal and assist in his last three is hardly prolific, though the Black Cats’ run of a single clean sheet in their last seven at the Stadium of Light, compared to four shut-outs in five on the road, suggests they are more liable to concede when going on the offensive in front of their own fans.

Promoted pair Danny Ings and Charlie Austin have persuaded around 3% of Fantasy managers to select them as captain as the duo go head-to-head at Turf Moor. In spite of the R’s toils away from home, Austin has scored at the likes of Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal and bagged a goal and assist against the Clarets in the 2-0 win at Loftus Road last month. With a single strike in seven, the goals have dried up for Ings of late, though the R’s dire form on the road offers reason for optimism here.

"When a player is injured (0% chance of playing), suspended or unavailable his price can still change in value. However, once his status has changed (to fully available) his price will be "locked"."

So if a player was at 0%(he was), then once he next turns green (even after a yellow?) his price is locked. That's my interpretation.

I'm not sure. I think the orange flag would nullify the previous red and unless he returns red for x amount of days before being removed he could rise/fall.

I think Di Maria was a similar situation to Aguero and I think ge can rise or fall already.

You're right that most would have flag change to doubtful.

I'd prefer it if he was locked. But if wildcard transfers don't count he may be pretty static. Not sure I'll take the chance though.

I will have something similar. Easy to downgrade one of the four premium mid to upgrade to a mid striker like giroud.

Not so sure. You will need two free transfers to do that without a hit. There is always another problem to solve so it will inevitably cost you a hit or at least derail other plans.

            • 11 Years
            11 years, 3 months ago

Yes it is two transfers but if you have an expensive forward you can downgrade but then will want to use the spare cash anyway to get a premium mid. Guess for me right now I don't see the value in dear front line so wouldn't wc for that in case it works out. Also depends if you are fixed on 3-4-3 as it doesn't seem as clear cut this year.

I think you need the flexibility of the system. Proof is always in the pudding, but what I like about this team is that it gives me a genuine option to play 4-4-2/3-5-2/3-4-3 almost every week. One of my biggest bug bears first half of the season is playing a 4 man midfield of Hazard/Downing/Siggy/Fab and the middle two just being far too inconsistent. Those four have given me 40 points one week and 8 the next. I know that's the same with all teams to an extent, but I'm looking for a more consistent 50-60 points each week side going forward. My Boxing Day team got 92 points for example. New Years Day? 36 with exactly the same players!!!

I agree mate. I have had a similar setup for the last couple months except all three are cheap forwards as I can't have Costa. I have played all those formations still the risk you can get it wrong but bravery has been rewarded this year eg bench Siggy in all his hard away games. Will pay off overall. Some people though can't deal with the constant benching headaches!

yeah, don't buy the little flexibility nonsense. Can almost always do transfers to do what you want. How is having Chadli/Siggy/Costa more "flexible" than Angel/Sterling/Ings. Indeed, I'd argue I have more flexibility because I can downgrade any of those midfielders for any form player in the game. If you go in with Costa/Kun up top, are you really going to downgrade them for someone like Pele hitting a streak unless they're injured/suspended? Surely they are in your team to stay - where as you can chop and change your midfield according to form and fixtures much more freely.

          1. ZiDan
            • 11 Years
            11 years, 3 months ago

Agreed. Plus I don't see the premium forwards offering the value of mids this year. I have hazard and fab so Costa isn't an option anyway. Just noticed is Cahill there just due to lack of cash for Terry?

not really, I could easily downgrade debuchy who is my least coveted defender - both alderwied or lescot options there - but I like Cahil's stats better and think he's due a couple

trying to decide between Debuchy + Jones. Feel like Debuchy has a better game this week and is more attacking...?

Cheaper the option. More available to upgrade the defense.

Crazy to go without a Saint or WBA defender on my WC ?

      Heaton Panti
      Terry Debuchy Trippier PVA Cameron
      Sanchez Hazard AdM Fab Boyd
      Kane RVP Giroud

Just don't like Saints or WBA fixtures over next month

I definitely think a WBA defender is worth having.

You can always bring one in down the line. Cameron may not be nailed btw.

Codecademy is good for learning the basics but I can't get onto it at the moment, seems to be a connection problem 😯
http://www.programiz.com/c-programming is good for C programming and there's programming books on Github https://github.com/vhf/free-programming-books/blob/master/free-programming-books.md#c (not sure how reliable they are though)
