Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole†behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

My only big decision on wc team and still not figured out...opinnions?

    a) Terry
    + Che defender is a mus gw24/25 =>
+ wouldn't be a surprise if the get cs against bonyless swa this gw
+ no planned transfers for future
    - next two fix against evertons next two

    b) Baines
+ Potential for 20 points in next two fix
    + due to get a penalty 😉
    - not good to have planned transfer when on wc (Baines => Terry gw24)

Slowly leaning towards a)...but will hate to see Baines getting 15 points in monday night football match!

Been away from the computer for a bit, not sure what to do with this lot..

    DDG - Elliot
    Zaba - Wisdom - Hutton - Vergini - Caulker
    Fab - Haz - Siggy - Sanchez - Fer
    Austin - Kane - Rooney

1 FT and £3.8 ITB with quite a few tough fixtures this gameweek. Haven't used wither WC and I know I've missed a few price rises etc but worth wildcarding? Otherwise any suggestions for transfers/captaincy very much appreciated 🙂 Thanks

Are you on WC? If so, downgrade Downing to bench fodder (Boyd etc). Downing is a good pick this week but then his fixtures turn. The fact that Austin has notched away at Chelsea, Arsenal and Southampton as well as scored against the likes of City at home, he's too good to be rotated or on your bench. And we all know the damage Kane can cause after THAT week...

            • 13 Years

That's a very good idea - I am on WC - just thought of Dowing vs Hull may be a haul and then use a FT to move him next week.

Kane was on the pitch for me, but the same applies... I would not consider benching him at all.

            1. President John F. Keninnsie
              • 12 Years
              11 years, 6 months ago

Personally I don't like planning to use a FT the week after I WC. Saving a FT is vital afterwards, IMO. Downing could very easily do well but think of the worst case scenario - he blanks whilst the player you bench scores. Not only do you have points on the bench that would've been on the pitch had you opted for a cheapie as your 5th mid, but you've also got that transfer that you have to make when essentially you could've saved it with better planning. You also have to consider that players in your team may get injured etc, meaning you might even have to take a hit the week after you WC since you've already got a pre-planned transfer.

Sorry for the being the pessimist, I just think this is a more sensible approach 🙂

All sensible, can't fault any of it.

I am well up in my ML so I don't have to make any rash moves or the like - but would most definitely want to end as high up as I can this season, my best ever by far.

                Cheers for the advice

          That's not a 3-5-2, it's a hybrid.

3-5-2 you have Barnes or Zamora as the 3rd forward and always bench them. Then you invest the spare cash in upgrading Downing or your defence.

It makes sense... rotation is a terrible thing if you are doing it amongst DEF, MID and FOR in each gameweek.

I have super cheap Carroll, Austin, Kane. No way will I be benching Charlie at home, especially against United

Team Costa Chadli wont have this problem.

(gonna regret saying this as boydinho may weave his magic again) 🙂

I have one spot left in my wildcard plans and Rooney is who I'm looking at. Wherever he plays, if he's on form he's a fantasy gem. Trick is to get him while he's hot, which I hope will begin this weekend

Is this back line too weak for a gw23 wc?

    Krul, panti
    Bertrand, PVA, wisdom, Chester, Cameron

Nope. Why not go with a 4.0 keeper so you could upgtade berty to lets say azpi when he's back

Plus sunderland fixtures are awesome till end of season

Berty to aspz ain't a upgrade for me

To much rotation risk over aspz.

        How much is Chester?

I'd be changing Chester to a budget. If like hull go Bruce.

            Then go Cameron to tripper.

Its not bad. The first 3 look solid, I'd look at Villa and Burnley for the last 2 slots

its not weak at all. people will tell u that u need a chelsea def etc but a good rotation will give u a fair share amount of clean sheet too

      After injury news from Southampton

      I'm going Bertrand/jones

Jones good few fixures could be good option till alderweiled/wanyama etc back

WCing next week, what would you do with this lot?

    2FT, 0.3 ITB

    Hart

    Azpi--Clyne--Naylor--Hutton--Duff
    Sanchez--Haz--Silva--Sterling--Downing
    Costa--Kane--Austin

Id get rid of Naylor, dont like his fix. Duff can be replaced with similar priced who plays 🙂
Downing is tricky, and so is Sterling. Prolly keep Downing for HUL, then get rid for someone like Chadli or smth?
Sterling might work out, but dont know... a bit risky!
Costa or Aguero, i have no clue right now. I just got aguero in, prolly regrets incoming in a couple of days 🙂

    Get Kun in
    Panti Gilks
    Hutton Naylor Dummett Bert B.Davies
    Sanchez Silva Siggy Haz Albrighton
    Costa Roo Kane

    0.9 itb and 2 ft.
    A. Costa and Siggy to Kun and Johnson/Hendo
    B. Roo and Haz to Kun and Fab
    C. Roo and Costa to Kun and another plus upgrade defence later
    D. Wait another GW to assess Kun

    Thanks

It seems the only significant variation to the WC template is whether you go for:
    a) Costa Aguero and Kane/Austin/Ings with Chadli or Downing instead of a premium mid
    b) Aguero and two of Kane/Austin/Ings with 4 premium mids

b seems more common but just wondering what was the key factor for people choosing one over the other? I'm still undecided which way to go.

Think I am going B. Costa is over-priced, and I like the look of Sanchez Haz Fab ADM + Aguero.

Keep chadli next 2 games then swap out for sigg

Is there other options maybe Moses/puncheon ?

With no Wanyama, Alderweireld and Schiederlin for at least a month now.

    A) How do you think the Saints will be affected by that defensively?
    B) How are they expected to line up in midfield now? JWP to get a run of games?
