Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole†behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

I played around with a WC team with Terry and Ivanovic in it.
Assuming your third is Hazard, the gap Not having Fab allows you to have Adm or Silva instead.
I think Ivanovic can Match Fabs returns for less money. Could be the way to go.

Tough one Innsie. Because right now Saints are without Alderweireld, Wanyama AND Schneiderlin. I'm not sure how they will be defensively.

Terry is a must have IMO with Chelsea's defensive capabilities. Silva in form at the moment. Goal potential too, unlike Fabregas. So I'm leaning towards A.

ooo this one's tricky. I know I said Fab before in isolation...

But would have to got with 1. I think Terry + Fab will score similar on a PPMil/PPG basis. But fully expect Silva to outscore Bertrand.

With no Wanyama, Alderweireld and Schiederlin for at least a month now.

    A) How do you think the Saints will be affected by that defensively?
    B) How are they expected to line up in midfield now? JWP to get a run of games??

JWP has played almost every game since his injury return, so no reason for that to change. The injuries just further cement his place. Takes most set pieces too. Good option if you ask me.

Still doubling on the Saints defence I think. They have other good players - that Harrison Reed kid is meant to be brilliant for his age, and has performed well as a holding mid. And of course, Koeman's philoshofee won't change. And then there's the attacking returns of Bertrand/Clyne...

Very difficult question to answer. Falcao and Wilson up top for me...Rooney might threaten Mata with Herrera and Carrick and Fellani back. ADM back to normal position, although Shaw is there too.
Maybe Mata is dropped, ADM in the hole, Rooney Wilson/Falcao up front?!!!

I get the impression that LVG thinks Rooney in that midfield role is more pivotal than anything ie he'd rather tinker elsewhere than shift Rooney.

It's tricky, at times he's looked great, and of course he's not a Sanchez type player - he's a goalscorer. He's just massively injury prone, and may never hit his Atletico heights again. Massive gamble if they buy him permanently.

Could you please offer some advice on WC team:

    DDG (Panti)
    Azpi, Rose, Clyne, Skrtl (Lescott)
    Fab, Sanchez, Chadli, (Boyd, Lucas)
    Kane, Costa, Rooney

Would love the funds to have Terry instead of Azpi but can't stretch it i don't think.
Went for Lescott as POD vs Wisdom
    Skrtl > Koscielny next week
Keepers rotate till end of year now
Rooney is my biggest concern, not sure how Bony effects Kun

Hmm Lucas is pretty much pointless, mate. He's scored what, 1 goal in his Liverpool career? Rose is a poor choice I think, I'd prefer Naylor over him at that price. I think you'd be better off downgrading DDG to Foster / Heaton / Krul and using the funds to beef up Lucas to someone who might actually get you a few points.

Yeah, was pretty much discarding Mid 5 which might bite me with rotation etc and cancelled games due to weather (does it look like happening this year - I'm in Oz)
Thoughts on the Upgrade of Lucas Misteak?
Swans have shocking run in next 10 though, actually took him out.

I'd personally switch Lescott for Wisdom and DDG for Foster to give you some funds to upgrade Lucas & Rose. Or even do Rose to PvA, he's 0.6 cheaper (or Trippier for the next 4) and I could actually see him doing better. Not sure how much that would leave you in the bank but if you're still looking for a relatively budget option you chould pick from Puncheon or Johnson.

Liverpool? AVL can't score and WHU isn't prolific of late.

Liverpool can always ship a few, no matter who they're playing.

I think you look okay, mate. Not entirely sure about Jones meself, going for someone like PvA or Naylor will give you a bit of dosh to use elsewhere and I don't see Jones doing much better than them. ut the team is looking okay. x

Aguero if your choosing between the two. There's more reliable options elsewhere at Chelsea than City.

If you're dead set on only having one of them then it's shirley Aguero. Double up on Fab & Haz otherwise.

When I WC and sell a player, and buy him back in the same week. Do you get the sale premium back, i.e. buy him back at price I sold or do I pay the higher market rate?

Higher rate so don't sell unless you are sure you don't want back unless dropping in price.

If you like. Decoded, it says that WBA's fixtures are crap now, and are due a turn for the worse. Much worse.

      1. Jafalad
        • 16 Years

No but take this week for example. WBA at EVR. I only play 2 WBA as Pantz has Spuds away. The other two would be JT and Berty.

All depends on the fixture see.

          • 12 Years
          11 years, 2 months ago

So in effect your really only doubling up unless Terry or Berty don't play.
In that case I would consider dropping either Wisdom or Lescott and finding cover elsewhere as one will never play and if the week u want all 3 could fall on a bad fix.
Imagine for example having to play 3 WBA away to City or Chelsea.
