Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

Victor & Morgan being out lessens the appeal of Clyne then.

Which of these would you prefer this week?

    A) Baines & Wasilewski

    B) Jags & Cresswell

    C) Jags & Walker

    D) Another combo for 11.3m or less

    (Note - can't be a CHE defender)

Just had a look at your team. What was your first transfer?

I think your front 7 is strong this week - no need to change.

I'd be looking at Zaba -> Baines and possible Clyne -> Cresswell (unless you got him cheap).

Have you considered Costa -> Kun?

      Keep Erik.

He 3rd highest rated player on RMT (after kun, baines) which I don't totally believe but is still indicative of his fixture and points potential.

I've watched a lot of spurs games. I don't believe Chadli will continue to outscore him. Obviously there is a risk that spurs don't break Sunderland down which can happen to them in home fixtures but I still would not transfer him out.

Could happen sure though would be against recent form. Also opportunity cost of a transfer which could be used elsewhere on a clear improvement (as opposed to this debatable one).

I'm thinking of getting adm for one week punt next week so I do see his appeal. Your team of course I have no doubt you will follow your instincts.

Currently on WC and toying with a few different options.

Here is one that I am giving great consideration to. A double block Chelsea defence with Hazard, who is a week by week captain option. It is very unlikely that I would captain Fabregas, who I currently own but am considering off-loading for a double Chelsea defence. If we take the current season to date there is a mere 12/14 FPL points between Fabregas and Terry/Ivanovic.

If these points ratio were to replicate itself over the remainder of the season, I would have an extra £2.1m to spend on team building, as I am definetly going with Terry.

Get rid of Costa, strength the rest of the team and put sh*t on bench who play 90 minutes. I promise you will feel better if you are on a wildcard. I've tried a load of different connotations and none give me peace until I did this. He doesn't justify 11.1 for 6 points a week.

Yeah too early to tell whether or not he is nailed on but if anything I can ship him out at a later date.

      Thanks both.

I'm opting to stick with Costa as if I change my mind its much easier shipping him to someone like Austin and upgrading a midfielder then trying to do it the other way around.

Can't look past doubling up on Saints defence and Baird at 3.9 is too good to ignore.

Just wasn't too sure on my 5th defender but not sure if I will play him much to be honest.

Alright DZers, have a couple of squad concerns for the coming weekend

Debuchy and Falcao. Debuchy is definitely out so I need to get of him, but for who? And is Falcao likely to start with Van Persie more than likely out this weekend?

    Clyne and Ivanovic

    or

    Baines and Terry?

This may not help but i would go Clyne and Terry and pocket the cash

        Definitely this.

Depends. If you have another SOT defender then B. If not then A

Clyne, Terry and the cash personally... I realise that's probably not the answer you were after 🙂

Ivan will be worth extra cash. I feel terry will not continue his goals. Up to you. Made me think tho.

JT has scored 6 or more goals in a season 5 times in his career. The maximum was 9 in 05-06. Obviously his recent run of goals is a freak occurrence but he could easily score another 3 or 4 in the remaining 17 games. I know of no PL defender better than he is at attacking set pieces (with the possible exception of Caulker).

That said, if Ivan and JT were the same price I'd go for Ivan. But having bought JT at 6.3 around 7 weeks ago the price difference is not justifiable.

Cheers all. I actually have Clyne and Terry atm, so those answers are indeed helpful.

    This is my defence
    Zaba, azpi, Hutton, dummett, naylor

One of zaba or azpi will be going for baines this week for 2 weeks until WC but which one?

I don't want to lose value but I can afford 0.1 drop for either without effecting sell value.

I would probably play zaba (ARS) this week over dummet (SOT)

I would probably play azpi (MCY) next week over naylor (sot)

      So
      A) zaba (ARS), naylor (sot)
      B) dummett (SOT), azpi (MCY)

And who more likely to drop twice in value?

I think Zab has a better chance to double drop but I think both will probably double drop.

Over the next 2 weeks? I don't think prices are moving that fast during wildcard season.

How's this looking for me wildcard team?

    Panti/Foster
    Terry - Clyne - Cameron - Wisdom - Hutton
    ADM - Silva - Sanchez - Hazard - Boyd
    Aguero - Kane - Austin

    Cheers 🙂

About to play my WC. This look fine?

    Panti - Mannone
    Bertrand - Clyne - Cameron - Wisdom - PVA
    Hazard - Sanchez - Chadli - Sterling - Boyd
    Aguero - Costa - Kane

Bertrand/Clyne can go to a chelsea defender in a couple of weeks if necessary..

Have you seen the fixtures Man Utd have upcoming?
I'd say its a risky move to not cover them.

ADM is the only one that looks to have potential but I don't know how to fit him in..

            Agreed there.

Im not a fan of doubling on big hitters from one side.
Will you ever captain costa over hazard?

If not I'd downgrade him to Pelle or someone like that then go chadli to ADM

If chelsea have a tough fixture like week 23 (Che v Man.C) that takes costa haz and aguero out as captains

But ADM has Leicester at home that week. You might go Sanchez anyway but to me, its best to spend top cash on a range of sides so the options for captains are wider. Costa is essentially a huge money player you cant captain if you have hazard.

    Foster (Krul)
    Berty | Reid ❗ | Zaba (Duff | Dummett )
Downing | Haz | Sanchez | Silva (King)
    Austin | Costa | Kane

    2 FT, 3.5 ITB

Have a few moves in mind but I'd like to hear some suggestions
    Thanks in advance

    A. Hart Rose Sterling
    B. Lloris Ivan Chadli -4

A for me, it's close but the -4 sways it.

Sterling could absolutely erupt at Villa and will be fresh as a daisy.

B could horribly wrong for the hit ( 1-1 for example) but Spurs have scored 9 in their last two at home right?
