Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

      B,

be careful with Gilks if you already have him in, as possible set to drop to 3.9... could even happen 8 minutes from now!

Siggy for sure. Niggling injury worries recently and no Bony in the side, granted he's at home, but versus one of the best defences (if not the best) in the league.

I would probably switch Jones or Naylor to an uber cheap def (wasi/baird/bruce) and upgrade one of the cheaper mids... You'll (hopefully) never need 5 defs and there's quite a bit of excess cash spread over those.

Good team though pretty solid. Forster to Foster would free up the best part of another million too if you needed that for the upgrade also.

Thanks for the input. I agree, I would like to upgrade Chadli if possible, I don't like having 2 Spurs players and am content with just Kane.

Cant say theres much wrong there. Like the defence. Got the main big hitters in.Aguero, Hazard, Sanchez.

Only thing for me is Costa would appear a big cash player who is never an option as captain while you have Hazard.

So based on fixtures Id get ADM. And as you have Kane, Id sell Chadli. To fund it, Costa out. Probably buy someone like Pelle for fixtures. Or maybe Giroud. Less money spent on a non captain option but brings ADM into fold as potential captain with good fixtures.

Yea I was thinking about this, deff a good idea. Only thing I don't really like is ADM really didn't look that great against Southo and is pretty injury prone.

because its the rule? why dont you asking if defenders should get 3points for a goal instead of 6?
Silly, because their position on the pitch make them deserve 5points a goal for sure

Not sure I follow this reply.

I myself have always subscribed to 352 until this year really. I think to counter the point you make above, 343 does often give more 'reliable' captain options.

Guess B. Don't really like taking a hit when you have a wildcard burning, unless you have players in your team you really want to give 1 or 2 more weeks due to fixtures, but after that you'll be happy to sell them.

This is another reason why the Winter WC is defunct. They realised that active players played WCs strategically to gain TV/ SV during WCs. Now they've taken that away.

If THEY are going to do that, why not reduce it back to 1 WC (with WC transfers still effecting price rises) and forget about those people that gave up 3 weks into the season.

Currently on Eriksen simply as I have Kane but good home fixture.

I'd be tempted to WC in that situation but you're not making many changes so maybe you can wait a week. I would advise getting Aguero with your FT, or sorting out your 3rd defender if you're confident in Rooney against QPR. A punt on Baines may be a smart move...

Not overly confident on Rooney given the position he's playing at the moment.

I've already done Azpi to Bertrand this week but had 2 FT.

Just feels like I'm putting off the Wildcard but will still end up with him the same team in 2/3 gws time. Not sure it's worth the wait.

Not sure if Rooney will be pushed up front since it looks like RVP is out.

If you feel that way then the best thing would probably be to hit the button now and get it over with 😛

            Cheers.

Thoughts on Foster and Guzan v Pantilimon and Heaton?

Burnley have good fixtures when Sunderland have bad ones. Or do I just go Panti and Mannone?

Panti is close to a must IMO. His points per game is higher than his price! 😆

I'm probably going with Panti and Krul as Krul is only 4.4 and gives home and away rotation. I'll be playing Panti in the majority of games though. Heaton could work well too but I wouldn't rely on Burnley for clean sheets - they've looked much more attacking recently which hurts their CS chances.

If anyone would be so kind as to cast a critical eye over this?

    Foster (Myhill)
    Bertrand Clyne Ivanovic (PvA Wasilewski)
    Sanchez Hazard Fabregas ADM (Boyd)
    Aguero Kane Ings

    £1m ITB

    Much obliged.

    On WC-
Any improvements I should make with this lot? Things change quickly.

    Forster (Hamer)
    Terry, Clyne, Wasil, (Wisdom, Naylor)

Hazard, ADM (vc), Fabregas, Sanchez, (Boyd)
    Austin, Aguero (c) Kane
    0.2m in account.

Not sure not having Costa is the way to go in fairness but bringing him in would cause a good bit of upheaval.

Have had Naylor all season. 4.6

        Will check the rotations again.

I'd consider getting Pantilimon as your sole keeper, check out his PPG. Saves are important for keepers and Forster doesn't make many of them.

I've had Naylor all season and sold him on my WC. If you get Pantilimon in goal and are still keen on a SOT double up then you can afford Fonte over Naylor.

I'm in the Forster (Hamer) camp. But don't have Clyne, that is why. Agree with Innsie, if you have Clyne, go for another keep like Panti

2 FTs to utilize for the upcoming GW:
Keep both Rooney(qpr) & Costa(swa) or shift one for Aguero(ARS)?
Keep Zabaleta (ARS) or a worth a one-week punt on Cresswell (HUL) or Baines (WBA)?

    Appreciate any thoughts

I'd shift one to Kun. Not sure who though.

Take a punt on Baines if you're WCing next week.

Thanks for the input, Innsie. Great overall rank by the way!

Deliberating over who to shift for Kun. No serious sell value on Costa or Rooney - meaning I won't lose too much value shifting either.

Baines over Cresswell? Everton haven't kept a CS in 13 & are up against Pulis' WBA. Or, Cresswell at home to a Hull side without Jelavic or Ramirez?

Or, does this Baines set-piece factor get him over the line?

How's this look for WC. It's kind of risky I suppose but I like it

    Mannone/Pants
    Clyne/Bertrand/Ivan/Terry/Wasi
    Haz/Chadli/Sterling/Sanchez/Boyd
    Kun/Austin/Kane

It's relatively easy to normalize should I need to shift funds around, but I don't feel like I'm sacrificing too much up front with the heavy defense and I think the rest for Sterling could really get him back on track.

    Good or not?

Benching one clyne Bertrand Ivan and Terry will be a headache each week.

Really good. But unfortunately I'm gonna give you a "template" FFS response. Sorry 🙁
A little bit too much invested at the back.

Not much different for Aguero. Affects Dzeko and Jovetic

Kun is the main man at City. Bony to provide a great foil for Kun in the attacking 3rd...but won't directly impact his game time. Dzeko & Jovetic could face more time on the pine though
