Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

Re the price changes not being affected by wildcards, I find this ridiculous. The idea is good in principle but surely once the deadline passes and transfers are as such confirmed, those players should rise.

if your wildcard is ACTIVE, then they won't have any effect. it's 100% logical, especially if you consider it from a programming standpoint.

this is why you should do all your transfers in a week you are wildcarding and then hit the button the last day so that you contribute to the NTI and perhaps (negligibly) contribute to a price rise

Yes but what about once the deadline passes. Do your wildcard transfers count towards price changes?

think of it like a glass of water. every person that makes a transfer in (for the sake of the visual) pours a tiny bit of water into this glass. eventually enough people have poured their share of water into the glass it overflows a bit, culminating in a price rise. those who are on an active wildcard are not pouring into this glass.

if you couple this with a look from a programming standpoint, there is no logic that would show that hitting the button at the end would retroactively summate all the transfers you've made in the days come to pass as it's entirely possible you're a user taking hits and opting to not play your wildcard. I make a transfer on Wednesday, it contributes to the NTI in favor of a rise for said player. if I finally hit the button on Friday, it will clear all my hits but all my transfers thus far are already confirmed and in my team and have already been counted as NTI/NTO at the time they were made.

Let me rephrase what I'm trying to say.

During a wildcard week, people play the money game. FPL want to stop this.

            Good, I agree.

However, once the deadline passes, these transfers are confirmed. This means actual ownership has risen, rather than artificial or temporary ownership. No money games have been played here, the player has put his money where his mouth is.

Surely at this stage, a new x thousand owners for player y should affect price rises in the same way it would on a normal week.

To clarify, this is why I dislike the new system. I agree with you regarding the reality of it, but I'm just saying I don't like it.

ownership is updating every 10 minutes or so, there is no such thing as actual ownership, it's always actual.

these transfers are confirmed when you hit confirm on the transfer page, not just when the gameweek deadline for match kick offs arrives. all that happens on gameweek deadline is the players you have at that time are locked in for play in their respective PL matches..you can make transfers after this deadline (even by mistake if you're a halfstep too late) and they will factor in for that day's NTI (which started accumulating the moment prices changed on that Friday, 9 hours or so before the gameweek deadline).

gameweek deadline and price change deadline are mutually exclusive.

                1. I agree with you regarding how the website actually works.
                2. I think it should work differently. I think that during a wildcard, nti should be ignored (as it is subject to manipulation - this is what I mean by artificial ownership. Somebody chasing a 0.2 rise before selling), but when the deadline passes it should affect price changes retrospectively.

There's no need to take this discussion any further 😆

during a wildcard, when your transfer page reads active. they are.

when it's not active, they are not ignored. it's that simple. the site doesn't know your intentions. until you hit that button it just thinks you're doing a -40. so as long you've CONFIRMED your transfers and can choose the players for start in "Pick Team" then it doesn't matter if you double back in and hit activate wildcard. transfers done and dusted and that's it.

                  🙂

basically from a programming standpoint (I'm not a programmer but I do a lot of Excel work) it's almost like:

          If Wildcard = 0, Then NTI/NTO +/- 1, else nothing

the fact that you're seeing the words active on your transfers page (and we're seeing it on your team page in the bottom corner) means that something in the back end was toggled substantiating the fact that these transfers WHILE active have no effect, but those made and confirmed BEFORE activating do contribute.

now your question seems to be asking about making all your transfers with inactive wildcard and then on the same day before the price change occurs hitting the button..I would still err towards what I explained above as the moment you confirm it all goes into the glass.

for people wildcarding this next coming gameweek:

Don't hit the wildcard button until the last day so that all your transfers during these 2 weeks "go into the pile" to help stir up rises, seeing as WC transfers don't have an effect. Clearly a negligible effect but every little bit!

    Current WC team:

    Heaton Panti
    Wisdom Terry Clyne ? ?
    Sanchez ADM Hazard Boyd ?
    Aguero Kane ?

    24.4M to fill the gaps.

A - Hutton, Jones, Siggy, Pelle
B - Hutton, PVA, Fabregas, Austin
    C - 10M for 2 defenders, Sterling, Ings/Austin,
    D - Any other ideas?

Nothing wrong with going with both.

In a way their scores are independent as Panti gets a lot of points from saves and PVA carries a decent attacking threat. If you think PVA is the best pick in his price range then go for him - don't let owning Panti put you off. Remember that owning one of them doesn't affect the other's points! 🙂

Being due a pen doesn't seem very logical to me. I would get rid of Cameron Baird and Wasilewski. Maybe for Berty or Fonte, Wisdom, and someone else.

It's still too soon for me to comment on that. I need to see a couple more games out of Pardew but the early signs are very strong. The shift in formation and general philosophy means we will see a lot more goals from Palace in the second half. I still think Puncheon is our third best winger behind Zaha and Bolasie, but he could thrive under Pardew. Still in the monitor phase, wouldn't buy in just yet.

With Wanyama and Scheiders out for a period each, that opens up opps for Southampton boys. Cork and Ward-Prowse would both do nice to fill in a midfield spot (bench most likely) and free up some money money. I shall monitor this situation. That Elia cat looked pretty good on his debut....one to keep a peeper on as well.

Yeah. That's a good idea for sure. Boyd is so awesome because he plays.....and is basically guaranteed to do so. In Ward-P's and Cork's defense, both seem to have the potential to net points returns. Just good options to fill a gap someone might have if they fancy spending the points elsewhere. People with a low TV, perhaps. You know. Stuff like that. Always pays to look at all angles in the game.

Yeah it's just a matter of budget, really, and how much you can stomach being wasted in your fifth mid who you would continually bench - not really a fan of rotating 4th and 5th mids. I am contemplating ponying up some funds for Moses or Zaha for my fifth mid but I don't know if my defense can handle it. Big decisions!

Going with Aguero and Skrtel is a big reason why I have been taking a good look at super cheap middies recently. Got Boyd in, so I guess the base is covered. Just something I've been focusing on a lot in the past week, and Ward P and Cork intrigue me. Skrtel is most likely short term, by the way. I liked the fixtures, and he always brings that threat of headers off set pieces. 7 goals last season. That's purty crazy. Hope he brings the magic back while I have him.

In the six games Wanyama has played less than 60 mins they kept five clean sheets.

In the six games Schneiderlin played less than an hour they kept two clean sheets but had four games against the traditional big 4.

Schneiderlin only to miss two league games, so I'll stick with the plan of a double up in defence

any chance this winter storm (to happen in the UK) will impact the PL this weekend?

I know nothing about how weather behaves there.

Hey I need an opinion on which transfer to make this week. Will probably wildcard next week and it's not worth saving the transfer with 5.1m ITB,

    Hart
    Bertrand Trippier Hutton
    Hazard Sanchez Silva Siggy
    Costa Kane Austin

    Gilks Wisdom Chester Marney

    Thanks a lot.

Anybody else torn between getting Aguero now and after Chelsea?

    1. Now, you'd get him at the lowest price and Aguero can score against anybody.

    Or

    2. Get him in a couple of weeks. Aguero is susceptible to injury set backs and is just coming back. Tough fixtures mean that his potential output is lower than it would be.

    What are you doing?
