Paul Lambert dipped into the winter transfer market for the first time yesterday by acquiring the attacking midfielder Carles Gil from Valencia on a four-and-a-half-year contract. The under-fire Aston Villa boss talked up his new playmaker’s versatility as he looks to bring the fans back on board after a series of poor displays led to many signing an online petition calling for his dismissal:

We’ve been on the lookout for a creative player and he will certainly bring that extra element to the side. He’s only 22 years of age but he will come here and give us something I don’t think we have at the moment. He can play either role, coming in off the sides or playing in behind as well. He can create chances and get those chances put away. He has a lot to offer and I know we can get the best out of him.

The History

A product of the Valencia youth system, the diminutive Gil was handed his debut for the club’s B team as a 17-year-old in 2009 and went on to score five goals in 53 appearances over three seasons in the lower leagues. Farmed out on a two-year loan to Second Division Elche in 2012/13, he was a key component in a side that clinched promotion to La Liga and also helped the club retain their top-flight status the following season, producing a total of five goals and three assists in 66 appearances. Gil returned to his parent club last summer but, having failed to secure a regular role, he produced just a single goal and assist in 11 matches for Los Che. On the international stage, he has played once for the Spain Under-21 side and provided an assist in a 4-0 win over Austria.

The Prospects

With a single goal scored in their last six league matches, Villa will surely welcome the young playmaker with open arms. Bearing in mind that Andreas Weimann is top for assists, with a mere two to his name thus far, it’s glaringly obvious that Lambert needs more creativity in his side to help get the misfiring Christian Benteke back amongst the goals.

Predominantly left-footed, Gil offers Lambert an option on either flank in a 4-3-3 and could even be handed the role in “the hole” behind Benteke if the Villains boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Reports in the Spanish press regard Gil as a technically gifted player, with impressive vision and ball control that is likely to get the Villa fans off their seats. Looking at the stats, though, his 40 key passes in La Liga last season – although more than any Elche team-mate – was still some way behind Ashley Westwood’s total of 64 for the Midlands outfit in 2013/14, for example.

With his side now sitting just three points ahead of the drop zone, Lambert certainly hasn’t splashed the cash for the new boy to sit on the bench. Gil – who could also be handed set-piece duties – is expected to be immediately installed to the Villa starting XI as the Midlands outfit desperately try to engineer a scramble up the table.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, a maximum price of 5.5 looks the likeliest scenario in Fantasy Premier League, though with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, Gil hasn’t been handed the easiest of starts. The fixtures do take a turn for the better in Gameweek 25, though taking their recent toils into account, Lambert’s side need to vastly improve before we can seriously look at their attackers once again.

    With the news that:

    Wanyama/Morgan are out
    Alderweireld returns sooner than expected

Should I opt for someone else for 2 weeks, and not Gardos?

I could go for a one week punt, but it means that next week I'd play Wisdom (TOT). So...

    A) Gardos (new, SWA)
    B) Jenkinson (HUL, liv)

    Last on prev page.

Anybody else torn between getting Aguero now and after Chelsea?

    1. Now, you'd get him at the lowest price and Aguero can score against anybody.

    Or

    2. Get him in a couple of weeks. Aguero is susceptible to injury set backs and is just coming back. Tough fixtures mean that his potential output is lower than it would be.

    What are you doing?

With the majority of teams in top 50k or so having identical players due to this Jan WC to climb up in rank will boil down to the odd punt and spot on captain decisions each week........until the DGW's kick in then it will be carnage!

Roll on the DGW's that offer so much yet ruin balances of teams.

Do people on here give advice based on-

    A. Thought process of the individual question, the parameters, context, fixtures etc
    B. By trying to make everyone else's team look like their own, making them feel better about their own choices.

That can happen. I was just discussing the notion of considering Ward P and Cork, and I have neither. And, I may never have either this season. Just two guys that came onto my radar.

Often times, my advice comes from aspects relating to guys I don't have. I can't fit but 11 starters in my team, as is true for everyone, and it's almost cathartic in a way to discuss the other options that the game's limitations have, well, limited.

I like this. I have gone the Costa/Aguero route but totally understand the Aguero/Kane/Austin up top.
Good to discuss the variances rather than 'ADM/Giroud/Costa is rubbish'

Yep. Someone trying to bust on someone's else's ideas is rubbish indeed. Unless someone is just talking complete BS. Like if someone came on here right now and tried to argue that Wes Brown was captain material for the weekend.

The 352 343 Costa debate is quite a funny one. I don't believe there is a correct answer, just different ways to play the game.

Both go hand in hand. We pick players for particular reasons. We use those same reasons to convince others of the merits of that particular reason. This may inadvertently continue to convince yourself about the merits of a said player by reminding yourself why you have them.

No one is going to say b are they Sab? It's like asking someone if they are an above average driver. 80% people say yes.

I agree with Ryan we put a lot of thought into our teams, more than we could possibly give to someone else's and we draw on that extended thought process to help others.

Personally I only give advice on topics I have spent time considering or at the least I caveat the advice that I've not thought much about it as I don't like shooting from the hip.

They give MAN and LIV cover. Didn't want to double up, especially Spurs. Was thinking Downing but WHU fixtures look ugly.

Last time I captained Aguero early on return from injury, I was delighted to see his name on the starting lineup at home to Stoke.

YES! I thought... Now I can gain ground due to my brave move paying off.

Of course, he played 90 mins and got 2 points. 🙁

Captaining him again this week. If he's not in the starting lineup, I'll see it as a direct reverse if fortune, with a contrastigly happy ending... He'll be coming on for a 10 minute brace 😀

Midfield looks a bit light. I'd consider downgrading Costa > Austin and beefing up Downing or Siggy to Silva, Fab, or ADM. Also, Heaton could be Krul. Or go for Foster / Myhill to free up some cash.
