Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Harry Kane’s phenomenal recent form earns him top place in our Captain Poll. Having served up 18 points against Chelsea in his previous home match, over 34% have backed the Spurs forward to get amongst the goals again, though visitors Sunderland could prove stubborn opponents – Gus Poyet’s side have four clean sheets in their last five road trips.

Fit-again Sergio Aguero sits in second spot as City prepare for the visit of Arsenal. Despite being handed just 25 minutes off the bench last weekend, over 21% are confident the Argentine will wreak havoc against the Gunners as Manuel Pellegrini looks for a repeat of the display that saw City win 6-3 at the Etihad in the same fixture last season.

Chelsea pair Eden Hazard and Diego Costa have been selected by just 6% of voters for a trip to Swansea. As we mentioned in yesterday’s Frisking the Fixtures article, all eight of the Welsh side’s clean sheets have arrived against bottom-nine opposition, suggesting the league leaders will pose Garry Monk’s side problems aplenty as they look to retain their two-point advantage over City at the summit. Hazard has delivered a goal or assist in five of his last six – including back-to-back away strikes – though Costa’s form on the road is a worry, with a single goal in his previous five.

Somewhat surprisingly, the red-hot form of Alexis Sanchez has persuaded a mere 4% of voters to back him with the armband. City have conceded twice to Burnley and Sunderland in their last two at the Etihad and face a major task to keep the Chilean on the periphery this Sunday.

Angel Di Maria (5%) is the favoured United option for the trip to QPR. Harry Redknapp’s side are unbeaten in seven in front of their own fans, though, and won’t make it easy for the Argentine, who has managed a mere three assists in his last eight appearances. Wayne Rooney earns 3% of votes, yet has managed only goal and two assists away from Old Trafford all season.

Elsewhere, the likes of Raheem Sterling and Danny Ings have also persuaded 3% to hand them the armband ahead of showdowns with Villa and Palace respectively. The latter’s home comforts came to fruition against QPR last weekend and he’ll be looking for more of the same as the Eagles roll up to Turf Moor – Ings, impressively, has now returned points in seven of his last ten appearances.

Benching Silva this weekend ahead of Di Maria, Austin, Sterling, Hazard, Sanchez, Kane and Kun.

    Correct decision?

Reassuring! I figure Silva is least likely to get an explosive score.. ADM would probably be the player I'd most likely bench as he was terrible on Sunday but he could score big at QPR..

              Whats a shocking call?

I have a feeling Sterling will do very well this weekend.. Liverpool really got their pressing game right v Sunderland.. if he had been playing instead of Borini he would have got big chances..

Only when City had no strikers.. With Jovo and Aguero back he is good for a 5/6/7.. Agree on Sterling but he will be up front against a struggling team and Liverpool's creative players were good last week so I think he will have chances

I think Sterling will score.. rest will do him good, he has had chances in every game he played up front, Villa are poor, first half last weekend v Sunderland was arguably best Liverpool have played all year with Markovic and Markovic particularly effective...

                    Sterling for a 10+ this week 🙂

Currently got the following fairly template WC team:

    Pantilimon, Hamer
    Terry, Bertrand, Wisdom, Hutton, XXX
    Hazard, Sanchez, ADM, Boyd, XXX
    Kane, Aguero, Austin

Can't decide on the final two spots (defender and midfielder) and have 14.4 million to spend. Worth going Fabregas/Silva and a cheap defender or Ivanovic/Baines/Clyne and Chadli/Siggy? I've sort of narrowed it down to Fabregas and Cameron or Ivanovic and Chadli but open to suggestions.

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Pantilimon is surely first choice - for the most part I'll be playing him I think. Could upgrade Hamer to Krul though any way if needed because both options leave close to .5 million in the bank.

Yeah, seems that's the differential between everyone's wild card team's at the minute!

I've not had Fabregas all season and whilst I've not massively regretted it his consistency has made me envious at times! I think Chadli and Ivan potentially has more upside but Fabregas was the way I was leaning because I think he'll just tick over every week with those 6-8 point returns.

Yeah, I opted from Hazard from the start and just about stuck to my guns in the early weeks when Fabregas was getting assists galore. Hopefully we'll both have a good run of games if we have near enough identical teams!

Took his time getting back into the swing of things after playing second string to Davies last season and having broken his leg the season before. He has been excellent for the last couple of months though.

He's picking up after a slow start, almost certainly down to not playing regularly for a long time. Still, think he's been shaky defensively whenever faced with any sort of test, having to resort to too many fouls, and never been the greatest going forwards. Dependable player, just not the sort I can really see why someone would bother splashing some cash on right now.

Given Everton's added game time vs West Ham, who would be the best choice to play?

    A) Foster or Pantilimon

    And also,

    B) Hutton or PVA/Wisdom

    Currently on Pantilimon & Hutton.

Villa haven't lost a home game in 5, while i am unsure of doubling with PVA or Wisdom (depending on who plays in goal)

    Forster

Wow that is the most unique WC I have seen! No Haz, Sanchez, Fab, ADM or Silva can't be a good idea. When those guys score big, you'll be scrambling to keep up and banking on clean sheets. If you're set on it, then at least downgrade Baines for a stronger mid.

Thanks. Got to have Baines! I go for luxury defenders. Got as high as 12k this season with this formula. Still got time to get up to top 10k. I always have the best two strikers and the best defence and then top notch low priced mids. Good fun.
