New Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew has been busy in the January transfer window, bringing the likes of Yaya Sanogo, Shola Ameobi and Jordon Mutch to Selhurst Park, in addition to acquiring Wilfried Zaha on a permanent deal. The Eagles boss strengthened his defensive options by snapping up Senegal’s Pape Souare, who joins for a reported fee of £3.4m from French club Lille on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Pardew brought several players to Newcastle from Ligue 1 and believes his the 24-yeard-old Souare, who was rumoured to have attracted the interest of Arsenal, can prove to be another big success:

“He’s a full-back who’s experienced at left-back. He’s played a good level at Lille. It’s a club I know well and I’ve taken some good players out of there and hopefully he can follow in the footsteps of Mathieu Debuchy and Yohan Cabaye. We’ve sent him home this week again to get himself together and he’ll be back in on Tuesday for training and we’re looking forward to seeing him.”

The History

Souare’s career began in his home country with Diambars FC before he joined Lille in 2008. Having spent a couple of years in the reserves, he made his first-team debut in 2011 and a year later enjoyed a successful campaign as part of the Senegal Olympic team at London 2012, topping the assist charts with four, ahead of the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Neymar.

Souare spent the 2012/13 season on loan at then newly-promoted Reims, making 23 appearances. He was part of a defence which conceded just 42 goals, better than any other club outside the top eight, helping his side to a 14th-place finish.

Having impressed at Reims, Souare returned to Lille for the 2013/14 season and made 33 appearances, featuring in a multitude of positions from left-back to midfield to left-wing. Lille enjoyed a successful year, finishing third in Ligue 1, and only conceded 26 goals. Renowned for his athleticism going forward, the new Eagles left-back scored three times and created 19 goalscoring chances for his team-mates last year but did have some disciplinary issues – he was cautioned on seven occasions and dismissed once.

Souare has endured a less successful campaign this season, only making 12 appearances for a Lille side which has struggled to recapture the form of recent years. The 24-year-old defender has won five caps for his country, including two appearances in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, while he appeared in both the Champions League and Europa League during his time with the French outfit.

The Prospects

Having also been linked with Swansea’s Neil Taylor during the January transfer window, it’s clear Palace were keen to add a left-back to their squad. Joel Ward was the first choice for the majority of Tony Pulis’ and Neil Warnock’s short reigns but he’s been moved to the right under the new manager, with Martin Kelly starting all three league matches on the left of the back-four instead.

Given that both Ward and Kelly are natural right-backs, Souare looks likely to be handed the chance to immediately cement a place in the starting XI. Having averaged 2.5 interceptions per appearance this season compared to Ward’s 1.8 and Kelly’s 1.7, the stats suggest Souare’s pace and reading of the game could help improve a defence which has only kept five clean sheets this term.

Set to come in at 4.5 to 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Souare’s upcoming fixtures are fairly mixed. Palace face Leicester, Newcastle and QPR in the next six but also square up to Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton – as their Gameweek 21 win over Spurs showed, though, they are capable of prevailing.

Whether that form brings to defensive returns is debatable, though. Palace have yet to keep a clean sheet under Pardew’s stewardship, and with a more attacking approach being favoured, faith in the Eagles’ defence is low right now. In the final third, though, the 5.6-priced Jason Puncheon’s 23 points in three appearances highlights his turnaround since the new manager rolled up and he seems a more reliable option. With the likes of Patrick van Aanholt and Hector Bellerin offering great value in the budget defender bracket, Fantasy managers may well sit back and wait to see how Souare adapts to his new surroundings before the fixtures become more favourable from Gameweek 29.

    Team at the moment:

    Pantilimon Jakupovic
    PVA Kompany Sakho Duff Wisdom
    Silva Sanchez Hazard Sterling Ward-Prowse
    Austin Aguero Defoe

Got 2FT to make, any ideas on how I could improve? The triple Sunderland/City could be an issue and I'm looking to get rid of Kompany for potentially Koscielny.

    Thanks in advance

I don't know where my transfer's going this week, so any pointers would be useful.

If sanchez is confirmed out this week would you:

    a) ship bertrand (no other saints cover) and play boyd
    b) ship sanchez and play hutton against chelsea
    c) ship both for -4

That's what I thought. Looks like bert to clyne/fonte, and maybe sanchez to someone (don't know who yet, caz, wally, maybe) if it looks like he's going to be out for more than a week.

There is always this, they are the top two shot monsters in the league and I can't help but feel despite the unquestionable talent, both had formations tailored to them, something my need to give to play them in tandem.

Silva will have to give formation wise and fpl points wise.

Which leads me to the conclusion that Yaya will step up once again in the middle with fantasy points...

Anybody else got second wildcard left yet?

Would be sweet if Chelsea got dgw 28 along with Spurs ecpecially as they both blank the gw before. Can then drive into gw27 offloading spurs/chelsea assets and fielding a full strength team while others bench them for gw28, then flip it around with a WC and field 3+3 spurs and chelsea, and maybe Austin in gw28.
Will probably be the best use of it this season, right?

No it wouldn't. 3 weeks is plenty of time.

7/3 if Villa beat Leicester. Probably 18/3 otherwise.

            11 years, 1 month ago

ah yeah thought it was shorter time frame.

Cant be 18/3 due to UEFA rules on top flight football & European football clashing. Most likely 7/4 if Leicester win.

If Villa defeat Leicester on the FA Cup I can see the Chelsea - Leicester DGW in GW 28. If I may ask a question which is the best time to use the second WC, to bring the DGW's players or to fix the team for the following GW?

I see where are you going Spencer. Let say on GW 27, my bench will be Lorris, JT, Hazard and Kane. With 2 FT I can bring Costa, Eriksen for DGW 28. Bar GW 29 the following three opponents will be from the bottom half team and good enough reason to keep them. Hence unless there is another DGW my second WC won't be necessary.

It's more for Ultimate FPL.. Have Naismith as one of my cheap strikers at 5.0.. He doesn't play much but has quite a few Sunday/Monday games so is useful in the squad if he's playing. Will get rid if he's going to fall completely out of the team though.

A surprising amount of RMTs don't have any attacking players from the team that in the last 6 gameweeks has:

#1 Goal attempts in the league
    #3 Amount of Big Chances
    #1 Lowest minutes per chance
    #1 Shots on target

And when it comes to defenders they are also:

The team that has conceded the least big chances (2), in comparison to Tottenham and City that have conceded 14, resulting in 4 CS in 6 games

      Team on WC

      Pantilimon
Terry, Wisdom, Bellerín, Clichy, van Aanholt
      Downing, Sánchez, Hazard, Silva, Cazorla
      Austin, Kane, Agüero

First thought is that Downing is an expensive 5th mid - I think if you make the decision to keep him, you need to play him. I have gone with Colback as 5th, Downing as 4th

Agreed. He wasn't my 5th before last week. Benching headache now though good if Sanchez is out... not that I want him to be.

Got a striker for those prices in mind?

Well, Giroud but as you say you have 3 ARS already ... I am from the 'sell Sanchez' camp, which frees up a whole packet and allows all kind of other forward options

I'm firmly in favour of Sturridge now - will score from the bench, and the first few weeks will be as a differential

yeah it's possible but he's so expensive! 🙁 Really does mess with the whole team.

If you take out Sanchez for Colback, Austin to Studge should fit right in, no?

Yes but that is a hell of a change?! Could go very wrong. Think the downside of that move is greater than the upside over 2 GW's. Might be wrong tho 😉

A risk for sure. If I asked you to choose between Austin for 90mins or Studge for 30mins, which would you choose?
Also, happy to post my team which is v. siilar, but with Studge, that way if you hate it you can ignore my opinions 🙂

Have a 0.5 Selling price vs buying price on Sanchez and on a WC.

    a) Sanchez -> Ozil to pay for Albrighton -> Sterling
    b) Keep Sanchez, do Eriksen -> Sterling
    c) Wait and see?

    RMWCT:

    Krul - Foster
    Terry - Clyne - PvA - Wisdom - Wasi
    Sanchez - Hazard - Cazorla - Eriksen - Walters
    Aguero - Giroud - Kane

A bit worried about 5 players with no match i GW27.

My plan is to downgrade Cazorla/Eriksen, and upgrade Giroud to Costa/Sturridge with time.

    What do you think?

I would get rid of Wasi then to someone playing in GW27. looks a really good team though

I choose him because of the DGW later. Not many £3,9M - £4,2M defenders that I want!

    WC Team;

    Pantilimon / Foster
    Clyne Jags PvA Wisdom Naughton
    Sanchez Hazard Silva Tadic Boyd
    Aguero Giroud Kane

    0.4 in bank.

Too top heavy right? I don't really want to do Sanchez > Caz as I bought sanch at 10.5 so won't be able to get him back. Other than that maybe Tadic > puncheon and upgrade Naughton

    Any other ideas?

Tadic to Caz by downgrading Jags? Can get away with a cheap defence but maybe get a Chelsea def in there

Which of these.. It's for Ultimate FPL.. Need to get some Liverpool players in as they play a lot of Sundays/Mondays.. A definitely adds better to my overall squad but feel it'd be dangerous not to have Sterling?

    A - Bertrand - Skrtel, Cattermole -> Henderson

    B - Keep Bertrand, Cattermole -> Sterling

Fifth mid? Are you going for 352, or are you gonna rotate fifth mid/third striker? I'd go for Mane, but he's imo 'too good' to be rotated, so it depends what formation you're looking at.
