We take a final glance back at the previous round of fixtures this morning, assessing the impact of Arsenal’s German playmaker, the upturn in form at the Etihad and brace ourselves for the return of a number of key Fantasy assets in time for Gameweek 26.

The Player

Mesut Ozil’s contribution to Arsenal’s labored 2-1 win over Leicester was far from spectacular. The German playmaker could not rival the likes of Chris Smalling and even Samir Nasri in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) output in the Gameweek but, nonetheless, his 11-point return promoted him in our thinking and suddenly forced us to reassess our view of the Gunners’ midfield assets.

Ozil is competing in a crowded market, not just as a heavy-hitting midfield option but also within his club – Alexis Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott arguably have the weaponry to ensure that the German is kept in the shade as an option.

Since Ozil’s return to fitness within the Arsenal lineup, however, that trio have failed to keep him in the shade. A pair of goals, three assists and six FPL bonus have seen Ozil bloom to the level we expected on his arrival at the Emirates as a £42 million acquisition.

Cazorla’s form has been reduced to a simmer, while Sanchez’ failure to return on the Gameweek armband and ongoing niggles will have pushed some to consider using Ozil to double their Arsenal midfield cover.

Indeed, the Sanchez to Ozil swap is perhaps a step too far given the Chilean’s level of output to this point. Nonetheless, Ozil is now a credible target.

While he may have to bide his time to claim the “number 10” role he so obviously covets, Ozil’s contribution from the Arsenal left has been convincing. The statistics show that, while he’s seen less of the ball, his impact in the final third and presence in the opposition’s box has improved: the end product has followed.

Ozil’s modest 4% FPL ownership is on the rise but still a factor and with fixtures and form aligning, along with Daniel Sturridge he appears to be the obvious target for those seeking a double-figure differential.

The Team

Fantasy managers need Manchester City to revive themselves as a source of potential points and, above all, keep the title race alive. Their 4-1 victory at Britannia gave us hope they could achieve both.

Significantly, Sergio Aguero woke from his slumber in time to see off the claims for Diego Costa to make an immediate return to our squads. The Argentine’s twin strikes provide immediate relief following five appearances without a goal and, while his reputation as a nailed-on FPL captain may have been dented, Aguero’s credentials as a prime asset are back on the table.

We now need City to kick-on. Clean sheets would be a handy addition to the points they offer, although given Manuel Pellegrini’s penchant for attacking football, that might be a stretch too far. Instead we’ll now be anticipating Aguero to return to his consistent best, with David Silva, Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure progressing to become genuine contenders for spots in our midfield.

Then there’s Wilfried Bony…

The Talking Point

Bony’s return, along with Toure, from the African Cup of Nations is timed to coincide with the availability of both Diego Costa and Gylfi Sigurdsson – two players who, arguably, demand places in our team of the season so far.

Sigurdsson and Costa arrive back with caveats surrounding form and temperament respectively, although few can argue that they deserve consideration with their FPL values dropping to more manageable levels.

Costa is already topping the transfers in rankings with Chelsea’s struggle to break down a resilient Everton highlighting his importance to their cause. If he can stave off further suspensions and injury, Costa ‘s present ownership level of 36% will inevitably continue to soar beyond that of Aguero, who is currently found in 28% of squads.

Bony’s arrival could be a factor in that. From a Fantasy perspective, we’re torn on the perfect scenario, here.

Priced at just 8.2 in the FPL, the Ivorian has the potential to provide us with a key differential in the mid-price bracket. Should that materialise, however, he’ll likely draw points from Aguero and limit his output.

If Pellegrini turns to Bony to work in tandem with Aguero for the run-in, the relationship and distribution of goals amongst that pair could be pivotal to our Fantasy seasons. Our ability to monitor that development and plan transfer and captaincy strategies accordingly will be key.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Post Wildcard Key Trends

Thought it would be good to highlight some of the key trends to emerge post winter wildcard. Hopefully this should help address any wildcard choices that have been overtaken by events.

I’ll list a few to get things going

West Brom defence. McAuley and Lescott have emerged as the best bets, leaving our Wisdom and Baird choices now redundant. With Gameweek 27 blank approaching these players need to be removed from your side. Arguably the Pulis effect was not as strong as we first hoped so Foster may be enough.

The Arsenal midfield – With Walcott and Ozil back the options have opened up. Sanchez, even though he blanked in Gameweek 25, still put in some impressive underlying attacking stats. But the biggest change is for Cazorla. Ozil is now putting in more corners and is playing higher up the pitch, with more penalty box play. He is looking the better bet for those wanting to double up on the Arsenal midfield.

Giroud – he’s not nailed on. Wenger’s solution to squeezing Sanchez into a side that already has Cazorla, Walcott and Ozil could be to field the Chilean up front at the expense of Giroud. This won’t happen every game but Sanchez looks likely to effect Giroud’s gametime. It happened in Gameweek 25 and I expect it to happen again.

Stoke – Geoff Cameron is the guy who comes in when there’s injuries. This is a trap I’ve fallen into. I thought he was nailed on after a raft of starts, but it looks like his owners will have to rely on injuries in the Stoke backline to be safe in the knowledge he’ll start.

I ony got him in for the good run and aim to remove him anyway...but yes it does look like he's not as effective. Not that I'm looking at Palace for the next few gameweeks but if I was I'd probably go for Bolasie.

I could keep him till GW27 and then sell. I have no money ITB after I did Caz to Sanchez. However the other midfielders for that price aren't great. I'm considering Walters(good fixtures).

Same for many of us. I kept him with gwk 27 in mind. he has to go. I may just take a chance on Cameron starting and there being injuries at stoke that week. Wisdom and Baird are now worthless FPL wise.

I got both Wisdom and Baird in on my Wildcard. As well as Santon for some reason, don't ask me why. 🙁

Now need to shift all three out in time for GW27... and get Starters in. looks problematic for me.

Aguero, Kane, Hazard, Alexis, Chelsea defender, Southampton defender, Bellerin, PVA, Wisdom/Baird, Foster/Pantilimon, 4.0 goalie, Giroud/Defoe, cheap mid, Cazorla, one of ADM/Mane/Eriksen/Walcott

I'd say that's pretty much a template team.

özil & sturridge should be mentioned also (+soon maybe siggy, fabregas) and its not template when there are 8 (or 10) midfielders mentioned. template was the times of fab5 midfield, for example, when everyone was having the same 5 midfielders. plenty of options atm.

That last spot is very dependent on your TV, some can afford a big hitter, others can't.

West Brom defence - Spoke to a WBA fan when I was on WC, he said Lescott was the man to get, so I did

Arsenal midfield - Wally and Sanchez will do very nicely thank you

Stoke - Cameron left on my wc for Wollschied

i had Dawson for a few weeks and he got me 2 cleanies and a goal before he got dropped, Lescott picked up a cheeky BAP this week

Swansea have been the thorn in my side this season. Started with Naylor and downgraded to Naughton on wc, but have benched about 4 away cleanies from them

Just read through the great hot topics started by HVT and RoysCallerAnne on FPL disillusionment.
I see myslf as someone who has taken this game pretty seriously for at least 5 or 6 seasons yet have never ever been close to quitting. Thought I'd share with you the ways I've kept it fun

    1) OVERALL RANK

The game has over 3m players, the odds on you winning it are astronomical. If you're not gonna win then who cares if you finish 1k 10k 100k, ultimately it doesn't matter, for me there's no more merit in making all the sensible choices and finishing 2,000th as opposed to taking big risks and ending up 50,000th. This is THE key point because the less obsessed you are with overall rank the easier it is to get over the bad luck that will inevitably come your way.

    2) MINI LEAGUES

Make sure you get in a mini league with your friends, winning these leagues is a realistic goal and more importantly the banter over your captain fails is a lot more fun than worrying bout what percentage of the top 10k have captained Aguero.
Ideally you want a league where you are know most of the competitors are trying then however badly your season is going, beating the bloke above you will always be a nice target and consolation (probably even more if you dont like them 🙂 ).

    3) PLAY THE GAME ON YOUR OWN TERMS

    For me this means

    a) When it's appropriate take a punt ( I have Kolarov 🙂 ) great feeling when they come off but accept it was a punt if it fails.
    b) Making sure have a player for the tv games, prob captain too.

You may well have different criteria but whatever floats your boat do it, dont get bogged down in the herd mentality, thats when it can feel like you're not in control and that can only be a bad thing.

    4) ACCEPTANCE OF FATE

Such a high percentage of FPL is out of our hands, accepting this is absolutley key to keeping it in perspective. Put the effort into your picks rather than in getting emotional over the results and then you can be satisfied with your work regardless of the outcome.

    5) PERSPECTIVE

We all like to think our skillset gives us an edge over the field but there is so much luck involved that you really shouldn't beat yourself up over bad decisions. Im doing ok this season but even with all my effort I'm only a few points above a mini league rival who is just 6yrs old. This helps keep me honest!

Good luck for the rest of the season and remember that as long as you have your health and family and friends then what ever happens on a football pitch really isn't that important, just good fun ( unless you support Leeds 🙂 )

It's very true, and perspective is definitely the most important thing. In the grand scheme of things, if your captain choice is your biggest problem in life, you're doing OK. It's just very hard to remember sometimes, particularly if you don't have other, more pressing concerns.

It should be fun though, thanks for the much needed reminder! 🙂

This is basically a long winded way of saying "it's the taking part and having fun that counts". For more competitive people the fun part is doing well, playing optimally and ranking as high as possible.

I definitely prioritise my mini-leagues, partly because I'm in a 36 man league with a £3600 prize pool and a 12 man league with a £240 prizepool but also because it's fun to compete against people you know. I'd sacrifice my overall rank to win these but that's rarely the cawe.

Generally if you finish in the top 5-10k you will win your mini-league. There is a lot of luck involved but you need to give yourself the best chance of being lucky by making the most optimal decisions most of the time.

Check my history. When finishing 600th, it was the Aguero last minute goal that won me the money that year, and the year after for 2.6k it was Lukaku's third vs United that sealed the deal (he'd taken him out that morning and he started on the bench - I thought I was done for).

It was the same poor guy I beat both times, too. You're right, of course, generally. Just highlighting how unlucky my poor colleague was for his great finishes. I've since left that employer, so I assume he's now romping it!

I think you're right that it comes down to luck with two managers who are equally matched and invest an equal amount of effort. That's what makes the game fun. It's like poker, a game of skill but anyone can win on any given day because chance is such a big factor in the short term. Over 100,000 hands the better poker player achieves a better winrate but the casual player always feels like he can win because he's always measuring himself by what he won/lost on the night or during that week.

          Hi Jonty,

Is there a way to push the cricket thread back up to the top of the community articles, with it starting tonight? Would be less irksome for people who don't wish to read it on the main threads, and it should make it visible on the right-hand side for the first 2 weeks of the tournament, by which enthusiasm will have dampened a little.

This is all true until you have one of those seasons when you're just about top, close enough to start imagining what it's like to to win it all...and then every point lost, every wrong captain choice, every wrong transfer, every point lost, that actually hurts

Arsène Wenger has revealed the following team news ahead of the Middlesbrough game:

    on team news…
Aaron Ramsey will be out, he has a little hamstring strain. Alexis is still not able to go out, he could be short again for Sunday. Jack Wilshere’s back in normal training but has been out for [more than two] months and misses competition. He worked very hard and is focused, committed, but it will take him a while to get back to competitive level.

on whether Ramsey has an underlying problem…
We haven’t found the underlying reason. There is an underlying reason that is certainly medical or bio-mechanical because he is a guy who is serious, works hard, has a controlled and disciplined life, so there’s no obvious reason why he should have muscular problems.

    on Jack Wilshere…
He’s motivated and focused to come back as quickly as possible. He worked very hard but he has still been out for [more than two] months and what he needs now is to get back. Competition gives you that sharpness that training cannot give you because it’s about a combination of fitness and decision-making - and speed of decision-making. It takes a while to get that back.

    on Arteta, Debuchy and Oxlade-Chamberlain…
The closest of the three is Oxlade-Chamberlain.

It was mainly when Rooney was given the captaincy by LVG. Plus, prices come out well before the season starts so the expectations changed for RVP meaning he hasn't actually been such a letdown.

Rooney for me. Once a superb FPL asset. Goals, assists, bonus...and great in other more stat based games like UFPL and Sky. Now he's just like any other 7-8m central midfielder. Its a sad demise in fantasy football terms.

De Jong as well. On penalties, I thought he'd be the highest mid-priced mid. Lamela had a good preseason too

I think I tipped RVP and Mata to have big seasons so that's been a let down. Everton would be the other. Coleman, Lukaku and Barkley, so much promise, so little delivered.

I know it's early for RMT....but I am currently looking at my team consisting of

      Foster

      Wollscheid - Zouma - PVA

Silva - Hazard - Cazorla Ozil

      Sturridge - Aggy - Kane

I am seriously considering dropping Kane out for Costa, and Silva out for Toure (meaning Ibe for Cazorla) - purely because these two are at the cheapest they will be all season. And something in my mind tells me a forward line of Costa - Aguero - Sturridge has to be worth it? And with their prices I can trade them out at any time as they'll all go up...

      Thoughts?

My other option would be Eriksen for Cazorla....but I feel very wary about leaving out Costa.

    1. Went for Foster because he was nailed - Pulis had to look at things first - nobody was safe.

    2. While I got lucky going with Ozil over Sanchez (mainly due to money and suspicion about performance over injury) I may go back to the Chile man once I see him back to his old self.

    3. I think 2 Arsenal is enough atm - a defender and Sanchez/Ozil or those two.

    4. Went for Wolly as per (1) - when a guy is brought in he normally starts and he had 3 x 90 games behind him at WC stage. All bar Shawcross and him risky I feel.

Which bowlers are worth picking? 😆

    1. Black Knights
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 10 months ago

The key with that game is to utilise what, on average, is 2 transfers per game. That means constantly rotating your bowlers per match. And... bowlers get many more points than batsmen, so choose your batsmen that bowl too.

For that reason, I'm starting with McClenaghan, Malinga, Johnson, Faulkner, Moeen Ali, Glenn Maxwell, and will be constantly changing them between games (except NZ, who play 3 times before a lot of teams have even finished playing 1).

      1. Holmes
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 10 months ago

Ah, cheers! I thought of keeping same bowling attack for most of the games(currently McClenaghan, Johnson, Malinga) coupled with 2 all rounders(Faulkner and 1 more) and rotating batsman. Steyn worth a shot?
I guess no one is worth picking from Asian countries?

        1. CABAYE4
          • 13 Years
          10 years, 10 months ago

You need to rotate your bowlers too, often the most consistent points scorers.

You'd be brave not to have Steyn for any of his games.

Asian teams players will do well in some games.

          1. Black Knights
            • 13 Years

Yeah you'll need some Asian involvement. Even bowlers from the minnows are going to take a couple of wickets, so there's 100 points or more to be had if you pick the right one.

I don't tend to waste too many transfers on the minnows' batsmen as they are more hit and miss (literally), but try and get one bowler from them as often as you can.

Steyn is a great pick but in terms of how the game is scored (wickets, maidens, dot balls) I would argue that Imran Tahir is a better option for SA bowling attack.

Thoughts on Oscar as a Chelsea DGW player (if Chelsea have DGW28)? Too much of a rotation risk with Cuadrado also in the mix or a good value option?

I already have him in my team and could bench for GW27, and go for Hazard+Oscar+Terry (and Kane+Eriksen) for the DGW. Just wondering whether it's too risky to trust that Oscar starts both games...

It is entirely dependent on if Fab and Costa increase their 8 YCs beforehand. If they get booked in both games pre-DGW, they'll miss both. If they get booked in one of them, I wouldn't risk it becoming a single GW for them.

southee should be good for the big games, though his form's been a bit off. the games against the minnows could throw up a few surprises

He is a great shout, never crossed my mind for some reason. Tends to be the glue at 5, steadying things if the top order fail. Will definitely be nailed on as well i would guess. Went for Anderson as he scores more 6s and sometimes bowls at the death

Yeah Anderson is the flair pick for sure! If only the timezone thing wasn't such a nightmare I'd be much more excited, but 10 days off work now so will be able to catch a lot of it if I time things right. Made it a priority to re-set up my Sky Go this week to be prepared for it!

Not sure about his overs. Was getting a few in the build up but the stakes were high back then. Anderson vettori/mcullum 3 fast bowlers so that's your 5

He'll get some if nathan starts but not too many if vettori does

That's true. Fielding points rack up quick enough for a keeper, and he's batting well. Good shout.

Just thinking ahead to the next GW. Is it sensible to take a -4 moving Wasi out for a Stoke (or other) defender who I will need to play in GW27 to get a full 11 out? Or are some people in similar situations planning on just going with 10?

You have two transfers to rectify it. Just make sure your next 2 out are ones that don't play, and your next 2 in are ones that do.

Even if Villa dispose of Leicester in the FA Cup, we don’t know if there will be a double for Chelsea in GW28 do we. It could rearranged for a later date, we just don’t know. Hopefully there will be announcement on Monday/Tuesday if there is a result at Villa Park at the weekend.. If there isn’t one by midweek, I’d suggest it won’t happen in GW28 even if the option is there.

Besides, QPR playing Spurs already scheduled.. Loftus Road is less than 3miles from Stamford Bridge. Not sure the police would be too keen on having two games on that Saturday, so if it couldn’t be moved to the Sunday I’m not sure it will happen anyway. Again, only an opinion.
