Sam Allardyce’s recent claims of being the most sophisticated manager in town got me thinking. In more ways than one.

Could I declare something similar when it comes to my own Fantasy Football exploits? Were my transfers and Wildcard decisions cutting-edge stuff?

Outside factors certainly hinted at sophistication in football manager terms. I often sport a gilet (see Tim Sherwood). I’m currently eating a continental breakfast and, when I disembark my hotel room, I’ll probably have eggs benedict. Also, if it’s raining, I’d definitely opt for a brolly. Actually scrap that one.

When he made his unlikely claim, Big Sam was presumably citing the new expansive formations and systems used by the 2015 edition of West Ham. I’m poking fun but I genuinely think he had a point.

The man has taken plenty of jibes for favouring route one football – when he saw Louis van Gaal’s heralded tactical playbook turn to the page that involved Marouane Fellaini leading the attack, I think Sam had a valid opportunity to make his tongue-in-cheek claim. Certainly, given the reaction from the United manager that followed, it’s become one of my highlights of the season. I thank Sam for that.

Getting back to Fantasy Football, we also know that Allardyce loves numbers: he can often be found contemplating Andy Carroll’s “minutes per debilitating injury” statistic. Believe it or not, Sam is a master of the Opta-driven football world.

I love statistics. I’m always mining our members area before making my team selection. I also use our Rate My Team tool and that uses an algorithm in its calculation. I challenge Sam to even pronounce “algorithm”.

In all seriousness, perhaps the concept of measuring the sophistication of a Fantasy Football manager comes back to the age-old “Dullard vs Maverick” argument that we love to keep simmering. Perhaps it’s a measure of whether you adopt alternative angles with your strategies – whether you’re open to new ideas rather than constrained by the obvious template choices that are presented. Whether you’ve ever picked Edin Dzeko.

To be honest, I can’t really claim or measure a level of sophistication any more than Big Sam can.

Somewhere this morning there’s probably a Fantasy manager delved in pivot tables that plot his transfers, sipping Earl Grey and listening to Cole Porter. It might even be Granville.

I can’t compete with that. I’m not even making a transfer this week. Is that sophisticated?

I’ll ponder that as I leave my hotel room to hunt out my eggs benedict. I just need to locate my brolly first.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This is the problem. You don't want to waste on a non DGW player. I think I might bring Lloris in if I don't get any injuries.

        That's a decent plan

I left enough for Foster to Lloris - removes the WBA double up but I can live with that and my other keeper, Krul, has Villa at home next week.

Still not sure to be honest, ties a bit too much cash up in keepers for my liking. I am seriously considering Terry > Walker. 😯

Also depends on whether I want Austin for the DGW - if not, I will just strengthen my GW27 team and bring Eriksen and Walker in for the DGW.

  15. Johnny98
    • 11 Years
    11 years, 19 days ago

Is Giroud and Caz --> Austin and Sanchez a good move?

No hit, and although Austin wouldn't play next GW Id have him for their double afterwards.

I can only just afford this move at the moment with 0.1m to spare.

Hurrah and I've already picked GW 27 as I only have 11 players it's not too hard!
2 FTs and 0.5M in the bank for tinkering - will likely say goodbye to one of Silva or Cazorla next week depending on how they do today.

    The top ten captainers.
    1. Aguero
    2. Hazard

    5. Aguero
    6. Hazard
    7. Hazard
    8. Hazard

I went Kane, but I'm already thinking Aguero was the smarter move. Totally didn't figure in the Yaya difference who will tear Newcastle's midfield apart I think (unless he's still a bit tired from ACon - does Yaya get tired?)

He looked tired at the start of the season. For me, it all comes down to whether Aguero starts today. I suspect he will, but there is a risk that he'll start from the bench owing tot he midweek game with Barca, with Bony getting the start instead......But as I write that, I just can't see Aguero being left on the bench, so I think I may have erred in captaining Hazard.

If Abeid plays then Tiote out actually improves us defensively!

Bellerin, Chadli, ADM and Defore ----> Zouma, Ibe, Eriksen, Giroud.

    Yes or No?

Not for this game week, just asking if it looks like the right move long term. Obviously wont bring in certain players until after the blank.

I know Zouma and Ibe are punts but I can only see them getting more game time and they free up cash for the changes that I want to make

Just put Wisdom third on my bench for next week, even though Kane & Hazard don't have a game.

He is so not in favour.....

Start him then and give him the armband. 😆

Same with Baird here. But may use my 1 of my 2 FTs to move either Baird out or Oscar.

    Foster,
Wisdom *, Terry **, Clyne, PVA,
    Johnson, Silva, Sanchez, Boyd,
    Giroud, Aguero

Subs: Myhill, Kane **, Haz **, Wasil **

    2ft's, 2.7m

Not only just 9 players (as of now) but really bad fixtures!!
    Advice appreciated..

      WC a bit too much?

Yep, don't waste WC. GW34 could be full of doubles if the Chelsea pair is joined by some FA Cup related doubles.

I think lots of people are in the same boat. I'd save the WC, and just switch Wasil and The Racist.

Or Wasil and Wisdom, given the latter won't play anyway

In fact, were I you, I'd probably do Terry to Bertrand and Wisdom to Wollsheid, then the following week do Wasilewski to Zouma.

Not sure about Zouma.. Seems to be rotating with Cahill.
            Thanks a lot tho!!

Yes, indeed, but at 4.6 I think it's worth having a chelsea defender who plays 50% of matches. I also think his games will increase, as he's just being fazed in. Clyne's presumaby an omni starter for you, and if you get in Wollsheid he rotates great with PVA to the end of the season. Bring in Bertrand/Bellerin and Zouma - uoi're sorted in defence.

    I agree with Hutton

Saving my FT this week may not have been a good move

No idea what I'd spend one on next week
