Liverpool fail to break down a resilient Blackburn backline at Anfield in yesterday’s FA Cup quarter-final, with both clubs now awaiting confirmation of a replay date.

Liverpool Stumble in FA Cup stalemate

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession and chances, Liverpool were unable to breach Blackburn Rovers’ defence in their FA Cup quarter-final clash and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Brendan Rodgers named two changes from the side that triumphed over Burnley in midweek, as Joe Allen and Alberto Moreno dropped out for Glen Johnson and Lazar Markovic. Raheem Sterling lined up in the left-wing back role, while Markovic was deployed on the opposite flank.

Sterling’s employment in the midfield four since last weekend’s clash with Burnley could be a concern for the 20-year-old’s 31% ownership. In the Merseysiders’ last two outings in all competitions, the bulk of their goal attempts fell to either Daniel Sturridge (12 shots) or Philippe Coutinho (eight shots), whereas Sterling only mustered a single shot in both encounters – no doubt due to his increased defensive workload when operating as a wing-back. Couple this with the fact that the 7.9-priced Coutinho has been in fine form of late, bagging two goals in three starts, and the England international has dropped slightly in terms of that internal contest.

Liverpool may have lacked the cutting edge to break the deadlock at Anfield, but their rearguard stood firm once again, recording their fourth clean sheet in six across all competitions. This was despite losing Martin Skrtel in the opening stages to a head injury – the Slovakian centre-back landed awkwardly after contesting an aerial duel with Blackburn striker Rudy Gestede and was attended to on the pitch for over eight minutes. Rodgers was quick to reassure reporters after the match that Skrtel sustained no serious damage.

“He is fine but he will go to the local hospital to make sure. If he had his choice, he wouldn’t but we have to follow procedure. He was fine, up walking and talking after the game but as a precaution we need to make sure he is okay.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, Allen picked up a knock in training so is a doubt for Liverpool’s away tie with Swansea next Gameweek. Meanwhile, Rodgers declared Steven Gerrard fit for the Swans clash after the 34-year-old was given the all clear to return to training.

“Steven has been working well with the rehab team. He will be back training this week and will be available for the Swansea game.”

Reds Made to Wait for Replay

In an unusual turn of events, Liverpool look set to wait nearly a month to determine their FA Cup fate. League matches taking precedence over cup ties, means a rescheduling of the Reds’ televised match against Swansea next Monday is out of the question, while UEFA regulations stipulate that domestic matches shouldn’t run concurrently with Champions League or Europa League fixtures.

With European football scheduled for the next fortnight and an international break following straight after, the earliest available date for their replays is poised to be April 7 or 8, which would fall in between a visit to Arsenal and a home clash against Newcastle in Gameweeks 31 and 32.

Should Liverpool prevail over Blackburn in the replay, Uefa’s rules will also have a knock-on effect in the Fantasy Premier League stakes. With the FA Cup semi-finals scheduled during Gameweek 33, Liverpool’s trip to Hull City would likely get moved to Gameweek 34 due to the midweek European football and hand Fantasy managers more teams to consider for the double. At present, only Chelsea and Leicester have definite double Gameweek 34s, though Villa’s Gameweek 33 clash with QPR needs rescheduled after their weekend cup victory over West Brom saw them progress to the last four of the cup.

    1 FT, 1.0 ITB.

Finally, a rise of 4k after weeks and weeks of gloom. Team is still looking ugly, but I'll take it week-by-week.

    Team for this week is.

    Ospina, (Krul),
Bertrand, van Aanholt, Stones, (Wollscheid, Naughton),
    *Eriksen, Silva, Sanchez, Hazard, (Lucas),
    Aguero, Kane, Austin.

Nothing more obvious than Eriksen -> Puncheon?

Looking at Eriksen's fixtures, I'd sort out Stones first.

              I would, yep.

I'm giving Eriksen until Leicester at home to prove his worth.

I think Stones and Lucas are your biggest concerns.

Anyway, Lucas is 4.3 and he is fine. I think he will play games once he is fit again.

And since I bought Stones two week back, I think I want to give him a chance against a Cisse-less NEW.

    A question for Simon March:

Being number one & the week's prior building up to realising you will be number one, how has this situation affected your everyday life on the build up to the the gameweeks?

Ie seeing team news? Making last minute captaincy choices etc

Interested to see how many minutes Gutierrez gets this week.

If he gets more minutes than last week, there's a strong chance he is being played back into the team.

    4.2 would be a sweet 5th midfielder.

    Krul / Panti

    Terry / PVA / Vlaar / Dawson / Bellerin

    Hazard / Sanchez / Eriksen / Puncheon / Boyd

    Aguero / Kane / Giroud

yeah it's a bit of a weird time to pull it out.

the obsession works both ways really, main rivals for each other and always will be. it's not embarrassing if you're involved.....it's gerrard's last season, he's never going to win the league, which is ace as we despise him.

the fa cup is his last chance to win a trophy with liverpool and the final happens to fall on his birthday this year...so lots to cheer and sing about until then.

If you're not a fan of either team, relax, don't get involved and watch out for a potentially great FA cup final.

The problem with football is the mindless, ill educated yobs who see it as a fight. When all they really do is highlight how pathetic they are.

Yes, Gerrard won't win the league. But the guy who made this banner sees fit to make something that has no relevance to tonight's game. Besides, he should clearly be worrying about his own team.

nay for me, was thinking sakho next week, but may not do that as austin could have double in 34

I chose not to do Giroud > Austin before the DGW and it paid off because I fancied Giroud to outscore Austin in the 4 gameweeks after. Just depends where you would spend the money saved.

ye thats what i am thinking, not sure if i should get someone like dawson or toby instead though. what do you reckon looking at my defence? wasted so many transfers on cheap defenders such as baird, pva in the past and want to be prepared for 33 and 34?
        thanks

ok thanks mate, keepers foster and krul if that changes anything. so would go schlup over toby and dawson based on the rest of defense. tempted to downgrade berty to toby...

        Non erikson owner here

He looked unlucky not to get more pints last couple games

I think he could do well at old Trafford

If you dont play Puncheon at home to QPR then there is no point owning him. Better off carrying at 4.3 midfielder and spending cash elsewhere.

I actually own both and intend to play both this week

    Early planning for Chelsea's fixtures.

Surely Costa isn't likely to play vs Leicester in GW34, given their fixture list?

Back in December, most people's treble on Chelsea was from these:

    A - Hazard
    B - Fab
    C - Costa
    D - Terry / Azpi / Ivan

Is that still going to be the case?

I'm looking at my squad and thinking that a big gun will have to go if I am to afford this - most likely Sanchez, rather than Aguero.

    1. Guidinho
      • 15 Years

Fab with the YCs and form probably off most peoples radar. Think feasible we will see a few Terry & Ivano considering the reasonable goal threat from both along with v high chances of clean sheets
