With another international break now upon us, we take a look at the fall-out from the weekend’s matches. Sergio Aguero’s form, Juan Mata’s importance to United, Arsene Wenger’s midfield and Villa’s lack of consistency are all amongst this evening’s topics.

Sherwood’s Villa remain a work in progress…
A home clash with Swansea seemed the perfect time for Villa’s main assets to place themselves in the shop window ahead of the double Gameweek. Unfortunately for Tim Sherwood and Fantasy managers alike, the Midlands side failed to maintain the momentum that harvested three successive wins prior to the weekend as they slumped to a disappointing 1-0 loss. With Christian Benteke set to be assessed after limping off with a hip problem, investment in Villa’s squad remains a risky tactic as they struggle to steer clear of the relegation battle.

Aguero’s slipping closer to the exit door…
Up against ten-man West Brom for 89 minutes on Saturday, the Argentine was handed the perfect chance to get back amongst the points at the Etihad. Whilst David Silva dazzled and Wilfried Bony staked a claim for a regular role by opening his City account, Aguero failed to score for the eighth time in ten appearances since returning from injury. With just eight Gameweeks remaining – and at least three of them doubles – Aguero’s place in our 15-man squads looks increasingly under threat. At a time when fellow big hitters Diego Costa and Daniel Sturridge both delivered again, and with in-form pair Harry Kane and Olivier Giroud racking up the goals, Aguero is looking the fall guy for many – over 33,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have transferred him out since the weekend, with his price now dropping to 12.8; just 2.0 less than Kane and Giroud combined.

…but Costa’s fragility might just delay matters…
Forced off on 75 minutes with a recurrence of his hamstring injury away to Hull, the Blues frontman now enters another international break with question marks hanging over his availability. Costa’s goal and assist at the KC continued his return to form, and with a double just around the corner, he’s earmarked by many as the obvious Aguero replacement. With Jose Mourinho casting doubts over his availability to face Stoke, though, some may be prepared to wait on Costa in the short-term, despite the fact that the striker has missed only two league outings through injury so far. There’s also the Suspension Tightrope to consider here – Costa (who has already missed four matches due to bans) is currently on eight yellows and has to avoid two more in the next couple of Gameweeks before the limit is extended from ten to 15 bookings. Essentially, if he is cautioned in each of the next two Gameweeks, Costa would then serve a two-match ban against United and Arsenal. Someone as canny as Mourinho will be more than aware of this and there’s a possibility he could turn to Loic Remy against Stoke or QPR to ensure Costa remains free of both injury and suspension.

Mata has played his way into Van Gaal’s XI…
Louis van Gaal’s decision to keep faith in the Spaniard and hand suspension-free Angel Di Maria a place on the bench proved pivotal as United clinched a vital win at Anfield. Mata’s brace served a reminder of the talents that produced 162 and 212 points in his two seasons at the Bridge and saw him move past Di Maria as the highest scoring United midfielder this season – despite starting just two of the last nine league matches. Di Maria’s assist off the bench suggests he could be set to oust Ashley Young from the XI next time out, but as United attempt to chase down second spot, it seems that Mata has finally convinced his manager he’s worthy of a regular role.

Long deserves more pitch time…
Handed a second consecutive start through the middle as Ronald Koeman rolled out a 4-2-2-2 to accommodate Graziano Pelle up front, the Republic of Ireland international opened the scoring in the Saints’ 2-0 win over Burnley. Whilst Pelle retained a central role after the break, Long – along with Sadio Mane – was shuffled onto the flanks as Koeman switched to a 4-2-3-1. The Italian yet again failed to score and has now fired 34 unsuccessful attempts from Gameweek 18 onwards – given that the Saints face five of the bottom seven in the next seven rounds of fixtures, Long’s pace and eye for goal looks crucial if they are to maintain their bid for a top-four finish.

Murray warrants our attention…
With more room for manoeuvre in our five-man midfields, the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie have overshadowed Glenn Murray as a Fantasy prospect in recent weeks. Zaha’s second successive strike in a 2-1 win at Stoke hogged the headlines as he continues his return to form under Alan Pardew, yet it was Murray – with a goal, assist and maximum bonus – who was the Eagles’ chief protagonist at the Britannia. The 5.1-priced striker has now racked up four goals and an assist in his last four yet is owned by just 0.1% of managers – whilst double Gameweek targets will understandably take priority, clashes against Sunderland, West Brom and Hull in the next four give Murray the chance to continue his own renaissance.

Martinez’ switch to 4-4-2 is paying off…
The Everton manager’s recent change of tactics has sparked a turnaround in fortunes and eased worries of a relegation battle. Martinez’ move to a 4-4-2 set-up, with Romelu Lukaku partnered by Arouna Kone up top, has earned the Merseysiders back-to-back victories for the first time since Gameweeks 8 and 9 and moved the Toffees nine points clear of the drop zone. The new system seems to be getting the best out of their key men – Lukaku registered a season-high score against the Magpies last week, whilst Seamus Coleman’s 13-point haul at Loftus Road yesterday mirrored his best for the campaign. With five home clashes allied with trips to Swansea, Villa and West Ham in the final eight Gameweeks, Martinez’ men are starting to suggest they could be set for a strong finish to the campaign.

Sterling’s wasted on the right…
The Liverpool youngster’s Fantasy fortunes continue to look bleak due to a move to the right wing-back berth. Brendan Rodgers ignored the many calls for Sterling to be reintroduced to the centre at the expense of Daniel Sturridge for yesterday’s visit of United and watched on as the midfielder turned in an anonymous display out wide. Whilst Sturridge has four goals and three assists in eight appearances since returning from injury, Sterling has managed just two attempts on goal in the last three Gameweeks since Rodgers’ switch – with a trip to Arsenal potentially preceding a Gameweek 33 blank (if the Reds progress past Blackburn in the cup), Sterling’s season is in danger of grinding to an abrupt halt.

Ramsey’s form allows Wenger to tinker…
Last week’s 3-0 win over West Ham saw Santi Cazorla drop out of the starting XI as Arsene Wenger’s decision to start the Welshman in his place was vindicated with a goal and assist. Ramsey’s midweek strike in Monaco continued his fine form and persuaded Wenger to rest Mesut Ozil this time out – the German had a “slight illness” against the Magpies as Olivier Giroud bagged a brace in the 2-1 win. With the FA Cup also to consider, there’d be no real surprise if Alexis Sanchez – with one goal in seven – is next in line for a day off, given that Wenger has conceded he is “tempted” to rest him. With home clashes against Liverpool and Chelsea in the next four, in addition to a blank Gameweek 33, many owners have already had enough – over 17,000 have sold on the misfiring Chilean, more than any other midfielder in the Gameweek.

Pearson’s playing havoc with our double Gameweek 34 plans…
When Leicester’s double Gameweek 34 was confirmed a few weeks back, Jeffrey Schlupp and Riyad Mahrez looked the stand-out candidates as nailed-on options out wide. Over the past two matches, though, Nigel Pearson’s line-ups have quickly cast doubts over the pair’s potential – while Schlupp has been shifted to left wing-back, Mahrez warmed the bench in the 4-3 loss at Tottenham and was handed a brief 15-minute cameo. With David Nugent and Jamie Vardy serving up a goal and assist apiece at the Lane, the Foxes manager has plenty to ponder as he look to go on the offensive and take advantage of six home fixtures in the remaining nine matches.

There’s a bargain to be had between the posts…
We pondered the merits of West Brom’s Boaz Myhill but came out of the Gameweek with another budget option to consider. With Frazer Forster crocked in Southampton’s 2-0 win over Burnley, suddenly Kelvin Davis joins Myhill in the reckoning, offering two good reasons to carry out surgery on our FPL keeper spots. Myhill looks certain to be the Baggies’ custodian for the season run-in, enjoying home encounters with the bottom two – QPR and Leicester – next. Priced at 4.4, Davis could be playing behind a back-four who registered their fourteenth clean sheet at the weekend, with the likes of Villa, Hull, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester still to play. We wait on Forster’s prognosis but if Ronald Koeman’s pessimism proves correct, many of us will be eyeing up a change in nets.

What a joke, FA are doing their best to keep Pool out of the top 4.

Appointing Atkinson for both games, dubious decisions in alot of Pool games by him. Not surprised one bit after Scudamore's comments about Man Utd.

Now charging Skrtel for a stamp, ridiculous you can clearly see it was an accident and he's trying to jump over DeGea. They're idiots did they forget that Costa did the exact same stamp on Skrtel a couple weeks back and he got off that one. the evidence is their on video they're so amateur or blatantly corrupt or have an agenda.

Suspending Dawson aswell is stupid, what's more stupid is WBA not appealing it. Ref made a mistake but Dawson shouldn't be getting suspended when again this happened 2 gwks ago when Brown wrongly got sent off and he got off it without O'Shea getting suspended next game.

Zero consistency and Zero use of common sense.

Skrtel deserves punishment. It was deliberate and ugly challenge.
Liverpool played bad and deserved to lose. If there is anyone to blame if they don't make top 4 is themselves. Blaming FA and Atkinson is cringeworhty.

both were intentional...no doubt. Skrtel had half a second to decide where to step and he decided not to jump over De Gea...if you ever even ran, you should know that he had every chance to avoid the stamp.

he did you can see there's no where to step and he doesn't entire step on DeGea. he jumps over him. He was running fast and also the Man utd defender also made it difficult to stop. the only way is for him to dive forward which isn't possible because he still thought he could get the ball

      1. The Skrtel stamp was an obvious red card if the ref had seen it. If it a United player had done it then Liverpool fans would have expected the exact same punishment.

      2. Pretty sure the procedure is different for Costa as that was in the cup, wasn't it? If they're assessed in different ways then it's hardly shocking that there are different outcomes. Especially when Costa was already getting done for a stamp anyway.

You sure? Read this on Rawk earlier:

"In the Premier League (as with Skrtel yesterday) a panel look at the incident and decide whether to charge a player. In this case they have (rightfully) decided to do that.

With Costa (the Football League rules), the match referee looks at the incident and decides if he made a mistake in not taking appropriate action at the time.
With the stamp on Emre Can he decided he had missed it and should have sent him off. With the Skrtel incident he decided he wouldn't have sent him off - Whether you agree or disagree is by-the-by.

The inconsistency lies with the interpretation of retrospective action by the Football League and The FA in these incidents."

i don't care about rawk. the ref didn't see either of costa stamps or de gea one, its not about the interpretation it's about costa not getting suspended the extra games for his stamp on Skrtel which is exactly like De Gea all Pool need to do is show that vid and he (Skrtel) will get off. It's embarrassing.

it doesn't matter if it's the ref or fa making the decision. Skrtel shouldn't get suspended

There was an absolute media outcry about Costa even though he wasn't looking where he put his foot. That was also mirrored on this site.

There has been virtually nothing about Saint Stevie even though the premeditation was obvious (and he has admitted such). Neither in the media nor on this site.

That, in itself, is egregious bias.

As for Skrtel, what he did to De Gea looked worse and was a more obvious stamp than what Costa did to Can. If Costa got 3 games, so should Skrtel. Meanwhile Rodgers is demonstrating the double standards that are normal for Liverpool FC by attempting to excuse both his players after lambasting Costa in the way he did.

As for Liverpool missing out on CL, that should be a relief to every other PL club. A repeat of their awful performance this season would threaten the PL coefficient and its 4 CL places. Liverpool are naturally an Europa League level club and that's where they deserve to stay.

Rubbish. Gerrard admitting it and ref correctly sending him off means people will move on, and rightly so

how often do you see gerrard do that?

Costa has not only done that more in one season than gerrard in his whole career, but not admitting it like a man did him no favours

No, he was looking at the ball. However most ex-players say "a professional knows where he is putting his feet" and I accept that may well be true.

My point is not to defend Costa. It is to draw a comparison between the Costa witchhunt and the relative silence concerning Gerrard and Skrtel.

Looking at the ball, which had just left the vicinity of Can's ankle...

Gerrard has always got away with it. It's been frustrating me much longer than you I'm sure. But I find it odd that you can't just revel in the fact that he actually got sent off, unlike Costa. And of course Costa gets roasted in the media. He goes out and does something devious in every single match he plays.

Liverpool used to be a European giant. That was long ago. Now they aren't even ranked in Europe's top 40.

Liverpool last 6 seasons including this: 7th, 6th, 8th, 7th, 2nd, 5th. Sounds like an Europa League level club to me. Only last season's 1-man team broke the trend and look what happened in the CL this season without Suarez to carry them.

Its still daft to describe a club with so much European success as a natural EL club when Chelsea were barely in the CL until Roman's money came along.

Incidentally, Liverpool's last 10 seasons include a Champions League trophy and runners up spot, the same as Chelsea.

                😆

I wouldn't describe 1 Champions League trophy as outstanding performance in Europe, showing a small club mentality there. Winning it 5 times in 20 odd years, now that's something to talk about 😉

How many of those 6 qualifications pre Roman were Champions League?

Seeing that I was born before Shankly arrived at Liverpool you might want to revise that statement.

You are living in the mythology of a distant past like most Liverpool fans unfortunately.

Because we are talking about now.

Preston North End, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Wolves all used to be much, much bigger clubs than Liverpool. Until the 60s Everton were indisputably the senior Merseyside club. How far back do you want to go?

You can't freeze history at a time of your own choosing and say that's the natural order of things and will ever be.

As it stands right now, Liverpool are an Europa League level club ranked 40th in Europe. Like it or not.

No. The "natural order of things" does not exist in football where the hierarchy of clubs is concerned. Although FFP is designed to make the order more stable.

Having said that, RM, Barca, Bayern and United are always going to be up there simply because their revenues are relatively so huge.

Perhaps you are right. It certainly isn't as good as the record of Bayern, Barca and RM if that's the yardstick. 😉

Mind you, Liverpool are lagging behind Anderlecht, Braga, Rubin Kazan and Basel. So I guess they have a different yardstick.

Nor is it as good as Milan's, and we've been broke for a good chunk of those 12 years 😉

Pretty sure its actually better than Real Madrid's record over that period but I digress.

Those teams are ahead of Liverpool in the rankings because they play in weak leagues and consistently qualify before being elimiated early on.

Actually, I've gotten mixed up and gone a year further back than the 12 seasons you've listed above but, yes, add 02/03 in and Milan have 2 trophies in the period.

                        02/03 - Win
                        03/04 - QF
                        04/05 - Finalist
                        05/06 - SF
                        06/07 - Win
                        07 to15 - Meh

That for me is better as winning it is far more important than reaching the latter stages on a regular basis and losing. 02 to 07 was outstanding.

Yep, that was the Ancelotti period, right?

I think over the last 10/12 seasons Chelsea's record is better but let's not argue about it.

I'll tell you one thing though. The only manager in recent times that the majority of Chelsea fans believe was unfairly sacked was Ancelotti. He really is a top class manager.

Yeah I've got nothing to say that I haven't already, the final wins are all important imo.

Yes that was when Ancelotti was in charge. Agree on him being unfairly sacked by Chelsea but he could be really frustrating as Milan manager. He has a tendency to be complacent. We really should have won the competition in 03/04 (we blew a 4-1 aggregate lead after all the top teams were eliminated) and again in 04/05. Only 1 Serie A title in his time as well when we had a superb team. The CL win in 06/07 against all the odds was special though.

I don't think anyone can argue with Chelsea's credentials.

I'm more concerned about our clubs as a whole. Watching El Clasico was like watching a different sport last night.

Chelsea and the rest are not in that league, currently.

You made a comment about Chelsea qualifying for Europe in 6/7 seasons prior to Roman buying the club, the relevance is that they were mostly for the UEFA Cup and not the elite comp.

rubbish there was out cry because costa did it twice in the same game and got away with alot of other stuff.

there's been nothing on gerrard because he rightly got sent off, costa didn't see the difference

the videos above prove skrtels is exactly like the one that costa committed on him and didn't get punished on, neither of those stamps were like the one on Can where it was plain obvious.

Pool will still finish 4th so i'm not worried about that we were always going to lose a game losing to Man utd makes no difference they have harder fixtures 5 pt is nothing. Last time they lost to them they went on a run they'll do it again.

I hope they don't finish 4th. The PL will end up losing 4 CL places if we have teams like Liverpool stinking the place out. Fortunately the chance of them making the top 4 are slim.

United are not my favourite team but they are, at least, a proper European giant. Much better suited to represent the PL than Liverpool are.

I wouldn't do either, do you honestly expect Villa to keep a CS vs Man U away!? They may even end up with negative points.

Hutton will also be facing Austin (something to consider if you have him in for the DGW as well)

Easy 8 points captaining Austin and potentially a lot more!

Aguero on the other hand (being a palace fan) could re-ignite his form and score a hat-trick against a side which pretty much always concedes, but his recent form just as easily suggests he could blank (couldn't score vs a 10 man WBA was the last straw for a lot of people)

At his price you can get far better value across your entire team elsewhere.

No. It depends on FIFA regulations that say a player can only be re-registered to another club in an authorised transfer window.

Loans are registered in exactly the same way as transfers. As far as FIFA regulations are concerned, Boruc is currently registered with Bournemouth.

For him to return to Southampton now would require special dispensation. Which would be very unlikely to be given as there is no emergency involved.

              No. They don't.

Special dispensation is sometimes given when a team has 2 or 3 GKs injured and none left fit. But that doesn't apply in this case.

Quite possibly. Plus Markovic or Ibe can play in that RWB role. Sterling has been looking a bit stale, a return up top could give him the boost he needs.

Some Liverpool fans should stop making a fool out of themselves by defending Skrtel. The intention out of frustration can be seen on the replays, but even in full sprint, most of people still know where their feet are going, unless their motor skills are non existent.

I don't think i've seen one Liverpool fan try to defend Skrtel's action to be frankly honest with you. Same with Gerrard.

Morning all - hope you're all going well. A bit of advice would be lovely, it seems the wheels have fallen off my team a bit in recent weeks with 5 reds in 7 and now a nice few injuries and suspensions:

    Panti (Elliot)
    Terry Fonte Bellerin* (Dawson*) (Haidara*)
    Hazard Cazorla Sanchez Eriksen (Moses*)
    Kun Kane Austin

    2FT 1.6 itb

Worth noting I have my WC intact, most likely for GW34. Currently got issues with Bellerin (gametime), Dawson (1 game suspension), Haidara (longer term injury), Moses (injury), Panti (upcoming blank), Sanchez (poor form) and Caz (upcoming blank - not worried about him too much though).

Sanchez -> Silva looks a no brainer, if not exactly inspired. Haidara or Bellerin probably the other one to go this week. Any worthwhile replacements on offer?

    Cheers fellas.

      Haidara to Schlupp?

Not a bad idea. I suppose he won't go scoring OGs every week 😛 Then again, I don't exactly fancy many CSs.

Though for that price, and with a double upcoming, perhaps it could be worthwhile.

        Thanks mate.

Is Schlupp back to a normal full back now though?

I like the fixtures of SWA + WBA for defenders before your WC, so i'd go with one of them, probably SWA as you already have Dawson, so Naughton seems the obvious one, but if you have cash to burn you could always go for another Swansea Def as more of a differential

Another good choice, I'll have a look.

        Thanks mate.

If it were me, I would probably only make one change on the defender and keep the two fr for next week. Bellerin in to Toby maybe?

Then next week Dump Sanchez and use the extra to upgrade Austin?

A good thought, one definitely worth thinking about. I can't help but wonder if Sanchez will be given a rest though, even with the international break this week.

      hey geordie,

for me, of ur defenders i wouldn't worry about dawson as you'll want him the following week and can reassess after that as fixtures get hard; haidara is a disaster (from a newc fan); bellerin also worth looking at shipping.

MF is bang on apart from sanchez so i'd defo look at shipping him before the blank; rest looks ok.

the routes i'd be inclined to take would be getting an extra s'hamp DEF or downgrading sanchez to an uber differential like phillips this DGW. leaves you with a ridiculous amount of spending power coming up to far more important GWs

Is there a more nastier player than Costa in the PL?

Probably not, but you've got to admit he's great at what he does and the way he goes about it in terms of cheating and winding up the opposition.

I don't think Costa is nasty, just very competitive and a natural born street fighter
