A dreadfully drab Easter Sunday stifles the previously unstoppable force that is Harry Kane as the Spurs talisman blanks at Turf Moor. Meanwhile, a former White Hart Lane favourite provides the key moment of quality as Jermain Defoe’s sweetly stuck winner decides the Wear-Tyne derby. Here’s the notes from Sunday’s “action”…

Kane subdued in bore draw

Harry Kane was isolated for large periods at Turf Moor as Sunday’s early kick ended in a 0-0 stalemate between Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley – the North London club’s first clean sheet since Gameweek 23. The Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) highest-scoring forward was hampered by a dearth of creativity, as Spurs struggled to unlock the home defence.

Skippering Spurs on the day, Kane managed just two goal attempts in 94 minutes against Clarets and was responsible for one of two shots on target for Spurs. Having blanked at Old Trafford in Gameweek 29, Kane’s lack of service on the road will be a minor concern which could dent the captaincy faith ahead of the trip to Newcastle in Gameweek 33. Nonetheless, a home encounter with Aston Villa up next will serve as a prime opportunity for Kane to restore parity and bag his 20th goal of the campaign.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino made two enforced changes in defence, with Vlad Chiriches earning a rare start at centre-back as Jan Vertonghen missed out through illness (breaking a run of 19 league starts for the Belgian). Michel Vorm replacing the injured Hugo Lloris in goal. Elsewhere, Andros Townsend, somewhat surprisingly, gave way to Paulinho: the Brazilian lined up at the No. 10 role in a 4-3-2-1 set-up, shifting Christian Eriksen out onto the right flank.

Eriksen’s blank means that he has now failed to net in eight league outings, with only two assists in that period to bolster his points tally. Again, the 26% holding the Spurs asset will likely keep the faith ahead of the White Hart Lane meeting with Villa.

On the injury front, Kyle Walker was subbed off early in the second half having sustained a blow to the foot in the first 45. Speaking in his post-match press conference, Pochettino revealed that the right-back is unlikely to be sidelined for an extended period, yet there’s clearly a question mark over his availability for Spurs next match-up against the Villains. In the event of his absence – and Vertonghen’s return – Chiriches will likely be tasked with filling in.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche named an unchanged side from that which fell to a 2-0 defeat against Southampton last time out, as the Clarets earned their second successive home clean sheet. Despite Burnley’s recent resilience, upcoming matches against Arsenal and Everton seem unlikely to return further shut-outs.

Having tallied five goals in six starts from Gameweeks 20 to 25, Danny Ings has now drawn blanks in his last six appearances, with the improved Arsenal defence up next.

Defoe screamer grounds Magpies

Jermain Defoe announced his return to the scoresheet in spectacular fashion in the Wear-Tyne derby, rifling in a 22-yard volley to seal a 1-0 victory for Sunderland.

The former Tottenham striker had toiled in the past six Gameweeks but will now be flowing with confidence ahead of an enticing quintet of fixtures (CPL, blank, sto, SOU, eve, LEI). Sunderland’s blank Gameweek 33 provides a major obstacle to investment, but another productive performance against the Eagles for Defoe could render him a short-term prospect from Gameweek 34.

Equally, there could be value in re-assessing the Sunderland black line. Dick Advocaat’s first win in charge of the Black Cats was a largely routine affair for the defence. Santiago Vergini was recalled in the centre in place of the injured Wes Brown, while Anthony Reveillere lost out to Billy Jones at right-back. Patrick van Aanholt, now at just 4.1 in the FPL, appears to be re-instated as the stand-out option.

Newcastle’s fourth loss in a row means that they now boast just one victory in their last eight outings. The Magpies look devoid of direction and ill-equipped to cope with a tricky double (liv, TOT) in the coming Gameweeks in light of their injury-hit back line. Fabricio Coloccini still has one more match of his suspension to serve, while top striker Papiss Cisse is sidelined for a further four fixtures. Considering the Toon took 78 minutes to register their first shot on target, Cisse’s presence is clearly impacting their goal threat.

    a) Double up with Clyne and Toby

    b) Spread the risk and play Dawson. Bench Toby

I'm waiting for Mourinho's press conference to hear an injury update + indication of who gets the start Remy or Drogba . If I had to call it now I would have to say Remy due to recent form and Mourinho saying he deserves mins . I think he will get the start vs QPR and he will 100 % hold the position over Drogba if he plays well imo .

Honestly I think Hazard may be a better captaincy option this GW coming. Sure Kane will be captained by most but Hazard is in lethal form about to come up against a defence that was taking a pounding from West Brom last GW. From the games I've seen Hazard is the focal point of every Chelsea attack.

    Good differential as (c) too.

    1. Lizard Lips
      11 years, 7 months ago

Got to be Kane at home I think. Us Aguero (c)'ers learnt that lesson the other week. Can't see Chelsea running riot at QPR.

Just gut instinct. He might well run riot but I think Kane captaincy is an easy pick and run the games 100 times Kane would outscore all players this gameweek, but as a one off punt hazard could easily do kane right over!!!!

I imagine top 10k captaincy will be:
        Kane (60%)
        Hazard (25%)
        Giroud (5% )
        Others (10%)

          See above ^

I had Jt/Azpi, Fab & Costa as my trio for weeks.

I should have sold, but concious of fab value drop and then got priced out of Hazard. Lessons learned...

I don't doubt it...it looks fantastic. We have our own impressive derby in East Lancs between Blackburn and Burnley. It isn't on the scale of the Newcastle one but it's a hell of a ding dong.

Yeh, I know a few people from working in that area and it looks a good'n. Theres more hatred involved when it's 2 neighbouring towns involved and it's about more than just football. Competing for work and jobs over centuries means it's drummed into you from an early age the importance of winning

            1. Dr Dream
              11 years, 7 months ago

I've posted a few times that unless people have lived and/or worked in both the NE and Liverpool then they really can't know how big football is in those places. It's damned near all consuming at times.

My favourite match day at Blackburn has always been when the Geordies come to town...they're off their heads and great fun to get amongst before and after the match...(you probably take a different view of them)...

Yes you are...and you all seem to own a shirt, unlike the Newcastle lads. Dunno what it is about their day trip to Blackburn but they always arrive in force and determined to party. I used to go in the pubs in Lower Darwen before and after the match where they all congregated...great banter and fun for that paticular fixture.

Alderweireld the best Option for up to 5.0 in the next 3gws?!
He was only taken out on 81mins because Koeman added another attacking player, aye?

    1. Bojaninho
      11 years, 7 months ago

I would say so , I've doubled up

  18. Hypnos
    11 years, 7 months ago

doubling up on SOU defence a popular choice even though they lost to Everton
ie Bertrand & Clyne - I have Bertrand already and funds aren't an issue

    1. Bojaninho
      11 years, 7 months ago

Clyne Toby for me but I'd say but of waste of money on the defence this stage of season

      1. Hypnos
        11 years, 7 months ago

true I think I might just go with Bertie and Alder

  19. CFC1990
    11 years, 7 months ago

Best striker other than Kane and Aguero?

This is until GW35 when everyone will get Giroud.

    1. Game of Stones
      11 years, 7 months ago

Berahino/Gomis could be a good shout.

      1. CFC1990
        11 years, 7 months ago

I am thinking Gomis. Maybe worth waiting until the end of the week?

      2. Bojaninho
        11 years, 7 months ago

Gomis might put a run together now, all a bit Punty at that range

        1. CFC1990
          11 years, 7 months ago

I think it is between him and Berahino

Why GW 35, arsenal DGW not until GW 38?

      1. CFC1990
        11 years, 7 months ago

Because surely you will want Giroud in your team. He is in great form.

Probably, if his form continues, but probably won't sell any of Kane and Aguero. So depending on the 3rd striker's form.

          1. Dr Dream
            11 years, 7 months ago

Sturridge and Giroud will be needed for the DGW's I suspect.

    Help required 😀

    Krul / Foster
Clyne, Terry, Dawson / van Aanholt, Hutton
Hazard, Silva, Eriksen, Mane / Boyd
    Austin, Agüero, Kane (C)

    A) Save FT

    C) Foster ---> Myhill (bad fixtures, but cheap) / Davis, Schmeichel
    D) Foster + Austin ---> Myhill/Schmeichel + Sturridge (-4)

I'll keep Eriksen for the Villa game and I also need to get rid of Hutton soon...

Any need to use the second transfer?

Did u ever wonder how this game might be with unlimited transfers? I'd say it would still as difficult judging by the how match results can be so unpredictable. Or maybe I'm drinking too early 🙂

    1. Epic Fail

      I wouldn't play. It'd be terrible.
