Gameweek 31’s swansong didn’t disappoint, serving up six goals in a frenzied clash between two sides battling to beat the drop. Christian Benteke stole the headlines with a hat-trick for the Villains, while Matthew Phillips and Charlie Austin vindicated those managers that invested in QPR coverage for their double.

Benteke hat trick salvages point for Villains

Christian Beneteke’s dramatic upturn in form continued against QPR last night he bagged a hat trick for Aston Villa in a 3-3 thriller. After restoring parity with a deflected shot three minutes after Matthew Phillips’ opener, Benteke showed calmness to outfox Robert Green in a one-on-one situation before drawing the hosts level with a pinpoint curling free kick seven minutes from time.

Among all the league’s forwards, only Olivier Giroud in his last match managed more attempts on target (four) than the Belgian marksman (three), while only Andrej Kramaric and Romelulu Lukaku (four) created more chances for their team-mates than Benteke (three). Furthermore, no striker recorded more touches in the opposition‘s half (67) than the former Genk hitman this Gameweek, underlining how central he was to Villa’s attacking threat.

Having scored just three goals in 16 league appearances prior to Tim Sherwood’s arrival at Villa Park, Benteke has now notched seven times in his last five starts for the Villains. Remarkably, he’s now just one strike shy of his 10-goal haul last term with six fixtures to play, despite experiencing such a wretched first two-thirds of the season.

Working counter to Benteke’s pursuit of further attacking returns is the West Midlanders’ short-term schedule. A trip to White Hart Lane this weekend is followed by a blank Gameweek 33 and a visit to Stamford Bridge, though bearing in mind that Spurs have failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous six home clashes, the big Belgian will fancy his chances as Sherwood looks to get one over his former side. Villa then finish the season with three home clashes which will prove decisive in their bid to beat the drop, with Everton, West Ham and Burnley all paying visit from Gameweek 35 onwards.

Sherwood named five changes to the side that succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford last time out. Jack Grealish and Leandro Bacuna were drafted in for the injured Scott Sinclair and Alan Hutton, while Andreas Weimann and Charles N’Zogbia made way for Jack Grealish and Tom Cleverly, with the former Tottenham head coach reverting to a 4-3-3 set-up. In defence, Ron Vlaar took up his post in central defence for the first time since sustaining a calf muscle strain in Gameweek 26.

Gabriel Agbonlahor, N’Zogbia, and Fabian Delph grabbed an assist apiece on the night, offering the former’s 32,000 new owners something to cheer about having watched his strike partner chalk up four goals in Villa’s double.

Phillips and Austin deliver again

Matthew Phillips put a smile on the faces of the 22,000 managers that took a punt on the Scottish winger for the R’s double, complementing his assist against the Baggies with a goal and a further two assists. The 4.6-priced midfielder has profited immensely from Chris Ramsey’s installation as the Hoops manager, notching two goals and seven assists in eight starts.

Phillips continues to be the primary creative force in QPR’s midfield, as evidenced by the fact only Eden Hazard (seven), Jesus Navas (six) and Steven Davis (five) engineered more chances than he did (four) in each player’s last match-up. Accounting for both fixtures in QPR’s double, Phillips tops the midfielder rankings with regards to chances created (eight) and sits second (16) behind Navas (17) in terms of attempted crosses.

Not to be outdone, Charlie Austin finished from close range in the 78th minute to give the visitors a short-lived 3-2 lead, boosting his points tally to 21 for the Gameweek – second only to Benteke’s 23. Austin’s exploits in QPR’s double have put him within five points of (161) of the league’s highest-performing forward, Harry Kane (166), this campaign, yet his 22% ownership still lags behind the likes of Sergio Aguero – who’s drawn blanks in his last five outings.

QPR now embark on a perilous run of four fixtures (CHE, WHU, liv, mci) that would appear, at first glance, to diminish Austin’s appeal. However, it’s worth noting that the former Burnley frontman scored in the reverse ties against Chelsea and Manchester City, and also netted in both ties against the likes of Arsenal – illustrating his potential for strong returns beyond the London club’s blank Gameweek 33.

Ramsey made two alterations to the XI that thrashed West Brom 4-1 on the weekend, calling up Niko Kranjcar and Clint Hill for the injured Eduardo Vargas and Suk-Young Yun. Hill marked his first 90-minute stint for the R’s since Gameweek 24 with a headed goal from a Phillips corner early in the second half. Bobby Zamora rounded off a productive double with an assist to partner his goal at The Hawthorns.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Introducing the Rough with the Smooth – looking for your Gameweek 31 tales of joy and woe.
We are looking for your input into what we hope will be a new regular community article.

Called The Rough with the Smooth it will round up your exceptional moves of success and failure for the Gameweek gone by.

So to get this rolling I’m looking for a few words from you about a particular move you made in Gameweek 31 that led to incredible success or failure. This could include those that ditched Aguero for Benteke, or drafted in Philips, or even captained him. Failures this week could include Kane captainers, or those who dumped the high scoring Sanchez for a dud.

For those interested in taking part please email me your tale of woe or jubilation at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk by the deadline of 10am Thursday April 9. Or leave your answers below.

We are looking for short answers to the following
    1. What was your move of success or failure?
    2. What effect did it have on your rank/mini-league ranking/cup success?
    3. What have you learned from the move?

1 Benteke and putting the abandoned on him
2 Jumped over 60k or but only a slight closing the gap in mu main ML
3 Having the courage to ditch big names that aren't performing like Kun. Unfortunately I ditched Sanchez for Mata but I can live with that

      Success: Benteke and keeping Sanchex
      2. Failures screwed me over massively (effectively lost a transfer), but Benteke and sanchez saved my week.

      1. Sanchez>Philips, but I then did Sakho>Costa instead of Sakho>Benteke, in spite of what my heart was telling me.
      2. Took the lead in my ML, but plummeted from 10k to 15k
      3. Aguero is dead to me, so is Costa. And Sanchez is a tw@t for scoring big the day I sell him, after believing in him for so long.

        1) Did my moves early to prevent double week temptation oops
        2) Cash league lead down from 97 to 44pts
3)What's to learn? Knew not having double weekers could backfire but there was enough reason to think QPR and Villa wouldn't do much. Hindsight is 20/20

      1. Putting the armband on Austin was my success
      2. That helped bring me back in top 200
      3. I learned to jump on DGW players that seem to be gaining form or are due a goal or two (next time I'll also go for the Bentekes and Philipses

      1) My big failure was twofold: a) not shipping Giroud for Austin/Benteke due to Burnely this GW b) taking a look at Kane's stats and putting armband on him, thinking he'd surely get one goal and Benteke or Austin max two.
      2) Dropped around 3000, still leading ML since few captained Austin or Benteke
      3) I want' to quit playing FPL 😉

1 - Decided to save a ft in a dgw as it was 'dullard'
2 - 2nd in my mini scored 125 (-8) to my 56, you can work out the transfers yourself.
3 - get off the fence and start playing, enjoying the game again.

Did the Aguero to benteke move as I was trailing a league rival.

Even put the C on benteke.

      Jumped from 540000 to 327000

Learnt that sometimes punts do pay off. Tempted now to take a few more for rest of the season.

      1. I brought in Benteke (c) for Aguero with the intention of then swapping to Costa this week. I think the real success was bringing in Phillips for the previous double gameweek and keeping him, he's been the stand out cheap 5th mid in the late part of the season.

      2. I've been trying to break into the top 10k for a few weeks and have been hovering around the 12k mark. After this gameweek I am now in the top 4k.

      3. I've learned that a surprising number of people aren't that into double gameweeks. What was it? 66% non DGW captainers in the top 10k? Couldn't believe it!

      1. Barnes and Aguero to Austin and Benteke (c) (switched from 3-5-2 to 3-4-3 and benched Cazorla).
      2. Moved me from 5,600th to 2,100th. Already top of my mini-leagues.

      1. Sanchez and Barnes to Costa and cork (352 to 343). Didn't own any dgw players. Captained Kane.
      2. Nothing short of catastrophic. Rank down 50k, went from 4 points off top of mini league to 54.
      3. I learned play the week ahead, don't plan for 3 or 4 weeks down the line - I'd have bought Austin rather than costa.

      1. I ignored a DGW, for the first time in my 4 seasons playing FPL. Never again.
      2. Thankfully got away with it in my minileagues, but a GW ranking of over 2m means I dropped 60k places.
      3. I like to punt, I really don't mind hits - so even in the worst DGW, do that. And when you have a striker in terrible form (hello, Aguero) and one proven striker in improving form playing for an attacking team who need goals to survive, take a punt on the latter instead of miserably hanging on to the former chanting "just one more week..."

At the risk of sounding like the annoying guy at the poker table surrounding by tales of bad beats...

Context: I was on nine red arrows in a row, having sold Kane in the January wild card as part of a quixotic move to shift to Oscar and a 3-5-2 because I wanted to see if I could be ahead of the curve and get an elite ranking. Having brough him back for the dgw but not captained him for 28 or 30 (only gw29, the week of the captaincy failure!), I had dropped from around 5k to more than 50k since the wild card.

I had to keep Austin and get in Benteke since they are both statistically strong talismen on PKs in a dgw, so I decided that Kane can't do anything for me anymore, since his ownership is so high. Also, I like to have one flair pick in a dgw and I needed to restructure my midfield pricing, so I had to decide between Phillips, Sinclair, and a Villa mid under 5.0m. Delph was at home and secure of starts, so he was the winner.

I shipped Kane and Eriksen for Benteke and Delph with my two FTs.
I went from 52k to 18k, my third insane gw of the season.
There is always risk involved in this crazy enterprise so taking the long view is essential in my opinion, as Spurs could score six this weekend. But to those who write off gw31 as luck, that is the whole point. It isn't luck, it's statistics. If nine times out of ten this wouldn't have happened, then this is the tenth time. Denying its right to exist is statistically impossible. If you play the percentages you will likely come out ahead, but you aren't guaranteed to do so every time. You will end up where you are supposed to, though, as will the riskier players.

      1. I saved my free transfer, went in with no DGW players and captained Aguero.
      2. My overall rank dropped from 195 to 577. Mark was one of the 382 that went past me.
      3. It sounds stubborn, but I'm not sure I made the wrong move ex ante. Obviously, it was the wrong move ex post, but if the gameweek was played over another 99 times, I reckon I would have no regrets in most scenarios. Maybe I'm deluded, but I hold out hope that I will claw back some ground by being better set up for the blanks in GW 33 and having Aguero when (if?) he starts banging in goals. In past seasons I have seen those that were impatient or reluctant to meet the price tag of Henry, Ronaldo, Van Persie and Suarez get burnt. This season I identified Aguero as that must-have player. Maybe the lesson is that in some seasons there is no must-have player.

      1. With a front line of Kun, Kane, Costa, I couldn't accommodate a DGW striker. Wanted Eriksen out, thought about Phillips or Sinclair, went with Fellaini to save a transfer and free up funds. Fancied him to do well vs Villa. Captained Kane. Scored 34 points! And have 3 injuries to deal with now.. At least I didn't get Sinclair which is a success I suppose!

      2. Dropped 60k from 140k to 200k 🙁

      3. Always have a DGW striker no matter how dull the fixtures! Will be armed with Remy/Costa + Haz for DGW34, and Sanchez, Giroud, Sterling etc for the other doubles.

      1. I already had Austin from the previous dgw, and it seemed to me crazy to have him and not captain him. If I hadn't already had him, and had say Giroud instead, not sure what I would have done. So, phew. Also kept Sanchez, and saved my FT, when I was wavering over getting in Henderson (who himself did ok).

      2. First green arrow in three weeks, and a decent one at that, despite Austin (c) being my only dgwer.

      3. Not a lot really. In hindsight I could have swapped Aguero -> Benteke, but those sorts of move normally don't work, and I wasn't ever really tempted. Stuck to my guns over captaining a doubler. (I don't even regret captaining Zigic on that infamous 1 pt occasion - it was still the right thing to have done beforehand.)

In my infinite wisdom I decided to avoid all double game weekers. Scored 51 and dropped from 2k to 4k - fortunately my mini-league rival also avoided double gameweekers so only closed the gap on me by 9 points. I'm still 40 ahead of him - perhaps because he has Naismith up front.

Yesterday, I worked out that my vice captains have scored 71 points more than my captains this season - if I had captained my vice captain each gameweek I would have reached the heady heights of the top 200 in gameweek by GW30 (incidently my captain and vice captain scored an impressive 2 points each this week so the gap is still 71).

      1. Failure(s): bottling out on Aguero > Austin (c). Choosing instead to do Sanchez > Mata. Realising that freed up funds to do Bellerin > Ivanovic. Captaining Kane.
      2. Mini-league apocalypse. Main rival had Phillips, Austin and Benteke (c). My 65 point lead is now a 17 point deficit
      3. Ignore DGW players at your peril!

      1. Ignored the DGW altogether and instead captained Kane, also shipped out Ozil for Mane.
      2. Plunged to 54K from 28K overall, in both my MLs, my leads at the top of 96, 134 points got reduced to 14, 40 respectively.
      3. Not taking risks is the biggest risk one can ever take.

      ROUGH

1 - sold SANCHEZ for Silva at the last minute (11 pt swing)
2 - sold haidara (injured for the season) for naughton (now injured for 6 weeks)
3 - (C) switch from Austin to Kane also at the last moment
      4 - 5th red arrow in 6
      5 - dropped out of top 10K

      Horror show this week.

        What have I learned?

Stick to your gut, resist the urge to make a last minute transfer or captaincy change.

You've had a whole week to decide, whatever you have got an hour before the deadline is who you have decided you want to stick with, don't mess with that. Sure, sometimes it won't work out. But as the saying goes - your 1st instinct is usually the right one. Trust yourself and more times than not you'll come out on top.

      1. Success = Austin(c). Failure = Wasted transfer on Foster > Myhill. Should have gone with my gut and played Krul and instead use the transfer on Moses > Philips.

      2. Green arrow (8th in last 9 GWs) but lost ground in Mini League, which is what I really care about.

      3. Take more risks, especially in DGWs.

      1. Kane->Benteke. Had a feeling Kane would blank because of the international break and all. (failure would be Sinclair but atleast I got PVA's 5pts from the bench)
      2. I was only one in my ML to have Benteke and that catapulted me in the lead and top8k overall.
      3. You have take risks if you want to win a ML. Some pay out and some don't.

      1. Success: Did Aguero --> Austin when i was in dinner with my friends. (Actually not a comfortable place as I usually do transfers in PC/laptop) Made Austin (C) of course.
Failure: Decided to play Lescott instead of PvA. Those 5 pts could bring me one rank higher in my country league. Also, those 5 pts could bring me to the #100Club.

      2. Went to the top 1000 overall for the first time. Dreams come true. Went to 4th place in my country league, too.

      3. Do not overthinking. The Austin move was a really fast one.

      1) Had loads of blankers coming up, so was it a wise move to bring yet another one in? Daft thing was I did Ozil to Mata, when I didn't even need to do that, lost 5 points there, but nothing compared to lack of Austin.
But what you know what was even dafter than all that...I had Phillips from the last DGW and he stayed on the bench!

      2) Not alot, I captained Giroud and scored just below average. Dropped a few 1000 places but its tightly congested inside the top 100K.

      3) Never underestimate a DGW, no matter how unappealing.

      1. Captained Aguero.
2.Dropped around 3k places to 17k. Important ML lead cut down to single digits.
      3. Learned that you should always captain a DGW player. And try to punt on some obvious DGW'ers if you have a FT.

Good idea for a regular feature, I am sure it will be a cathartic experience for the ffs community members to get the success or failure off their collective chests! My own sad story:
1, my patience with Sanchez expired and i sold him for Silva,= -10 pts
Decided not to bring in Benteke for dgw and stick with Aguero = -21 pts
As a result captained Kane instead of Benteke = -21 pts
So 52 pts down due to disastrous decisions, I scored 52 pts could have been 104,
      2. In my mini league my lead fell from 100 to 50 points. Overall I fell from 1757 to 3425 position.
      3. My lesson, be more parient with quality players and dont ignore dgw players, however poor the teams are.
      Thanks, i feel better now

      1. Captaining Austin and bringing in Phillips for Cazorla .
      2. Won my PP Cup match 91-90 and improved my OR from 71k to 42k.
      3. Cup competitions sometimes require a lot of luck - I needed at least 14 points from Phillips against Villa to win my PP Cup match and he delivered - a miracle! 🙂

I think for those chasing, dropping Austin for another striker (Remy, Murray, Gomis, Rooney) could be hugely beneficial, because I think very few will drop Austin after the haul he got them this week but in reality he has Chelsea then a blank.

Finally an opportunity to get be one step ahead of your rivals with very little associate risk

What would you guys do with this team with 1FT
    Ospina
    Terry-Zouma-Bertrand
    Sanchez-Hazard-Silva-Eriksen
    Aguero-Austin-Kane
    Wollscheid-Boyd-Haidara+0.7

Thinking of doing a swap of Ospina>Davis so I have a keeper for next gameweek but would result in me doubling up on Saints defence and also have Naughton and Zouma who are issues

What to do with this lot moving forward? Thinking of taking out Cazorla in preparation for their blank/Chelsea fixture.

    1FT, 3.4 in bank.

    Myhill
Terry - Koscielny - PvA (Dawson - Naughton)
Cazorla - Hazard - Mane - Eriksen (Boyd)
    Kane(c) - Giroud - Aguero

    Pantilimon / Schmeichel
    Bellerín / Terry / Rose / Clyne / Bruce
    Hazard / Henderson / Sánchez / Silva / Boyd
    Agüero / Kane/ Austin

Did one transfer so far this week. Krul > Schmeichel

Haven't been on here much recently but could use a little advice from the experts heading into the run-in.

    1) Should I stick with my team for this week? A few injuries but nothing I can't cope with.

    Adrian
    Bertrand / Terry / Wilson
    Cazorla / Hazard / Coutinho / Mata
    Kane(c) / Benteke / Aguero

Subs: Foster* / Boyd / Naughton* / Hutton*

    2) When should I play my wildcard? Benteke (c) has got me into the top 50k in the world and I have an opportunity do something in the next 7 weeks but have to get the timing right. Neither of the DGWs seem all that appealing ...

thanks - that seems sensible! Don't like the look of Chelsea's double much and I'm likely to have Remy / Hazard / Terry anyway without the need for wildcard.

Wait on the Liverpool news re dgw. If they are scheduled to play in gw34 I would use your WC then.

Benteke > remy is an obvious option but I'm not too sure if remy will get enough minutes.

This game has such small margins sometimes. Last week I was deciding between:

    A) Santi & Ayoze -> Sinclair & Benteke, or
    B) Sanchez & Ayoze -> 4.2m fodder & Costa

Most people advised B and I thought it was a close call also.

I would have captained Aguero if going B, so that one decision turned out to be a 54 point swing!

F* up completely last week and trailing now by 70p. Chances to win are very slim, so I desperately need some differentials and willing to take some risks. WC is left for GW34 as well, so those moves are just for the next two GWs.

    A. GW 32: Cazorla, Austin, Kun > Mane, Murray, Sturridge (c) (-4)
    GW 33: Naughton > Baines
    B. Leave out one of the transfers in GW32 (which one?)

Yep. Read the article and it says Costa wants to return as soon as possible.

It also says that Chelsea are unlikely to let him rush back and fear that the problem has been made worse.

Take your pick I guess. But unlike Wenger, Mourinho doesn't generally let players pick the team. 😉

I believe that what I posted yesterday will prove to be right and that Costa will be out for a month at least.

To all those going for a Remy punt, Are you not worried about the fact that drogba could get a fair share of the game time ?

Not really. Remy is capable of playing 90 and Drogba isn't.

mind games. surely you'd want Wenger to think your top striker has a chance of making the game.

Steering well clear of Remy now. Austin stays for this GW and we should have more info on Costa ahead of the United game.

How realistic is it to catch up 63pts with 7 games to go? this guy has been leading since Christmas where as I have had the bleakest of winters.

My 110 this GW has made it interesting again, im even back checking ffscout lol

Entirely possible especially if you have your WC

Unfortunately I have no WC so its going to be a tough ask, this guy knows what he is doing although hopefully his faith stays with Kun and it lets him down

        Thanks for the reply
