I'm interested to see what people think. I'm considering taking a punt on mata.

A, Chelsea have one of the best defenses in the league
B, Maureen will play for the draw. He doesnt need to win. A draw will do. He'll park the bus
C, Mata was exciled by Maureen last year. Left on the bench. Chelsea's two time player of the year. Then sold to United. I feel he'll be out to prove Maureen wrong.

    Taughts????????

Seems like a risky punt. As you say Chelsea will be on the defensive and usually they are very good at that. I can't see them conceding more than 1 goal. However if United did win 1-0 with a Mata goal then he'll get all the baps.

With all that in mind though I'm guessing you have a WC up your sleeve? its a bit of a luxury transfer.

    Let's be reasonable:
As a WCowner i would want a fit Sturridge for his DGW but since Brendan hasn't judged him as fit at all, even if he starts and plays 90mins in the cup I don't see him getting two starts in 4 days (or 3 in 8) in the following week. At least we can't be close to sure. Remy might even be the likelier of the two if Costa is declared out for another two weeks at least

    1. Dr. Agabuse
      • 13 Years

Then again Sturridge will start one of the two which makes Sterling a RWB prospect and hence less attractive as a FPL prospect. Moreno Hendo Cout for me I guess

Excuse my ignorance here DZ, but can someone care to elaborate the theory behind Aguero playing better strictly as as a lone striker? Has anyone come up with some solid concrete evidence to suggest that? Curious.

Stats out of the picture, I think maybe it just puts him more forward and central. Closer to the goal more often. Attack more prone to culminate with him. - - Just some ideas on the matter.

      1. Zasa
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Yeah, I can see that, on paper. It just seems people have taken a very short-term view on the matter related to the United game. Ever since I've watched Aguero play at Atletico, he's always showed he thrives on an efficient partnership. Whether with Forlan, negredo, Tevez, etc.. his play revolves around making runs behind the target man, run at defenders and challenge the centre- backs .

A partner like Dzeko (hopefully Bony soon) will use his frame to hold off defenders and invite ManCity’s attacking players forward, whilst Aguero is more likely to receive the ball and run at defenders. However, that tendency means he often loses the ball when his teammates are pressing high up the pitch, and the opposition are allowed to drive into acres of space in front of City’s back four.

Just seems their is a lack of substantial evidence to prove otherwise IMO.

I hear what you're saying. From what I've seen of City as of late, I think there is validity to the assumption that the other forwards, namely Dzeko and Bony, were not seemingly having a good effect on Aguero. Evidence in relation to your point of view is certainly there, if the other forward is playing well. Aguero and Tevez tore it up a little when together on the pitch for City, for example. Remember that game a few seasons back against Norwich City? - - It could work both ways for Aguero, as he's so talented. But, maybe better with another quick forward. Or one just a little more crafty than Dzeko and Bony. Not that they are bad players. But, they surely haven't looked great as of late. And don't seem to be playing well off Aguero, and vice-versa.

Jovetic and Aguero seems like it could work better than the alternatives, if he could get healthy and what not.

May have more to do with City as a whole, their 442 has w/o a doubt has flaws. The crux of the formation simply isn't working, but certainly the systems unreliability is not down to Aguero himself?

              http://www.espnfc.com/blog/tactics-and-analysis/67/post/2328513/manchester-citys-problems-are-caused-by-their-players-not-tactics

I was going to add something that the issues are probably more team based on the whole, so I agree. They looked like they were going to be formidable earlier in the season. But, as a collective, it's gone downhill quite significantly.

    2. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

Pretty sure there have been green posts about this illustrating the difference in points when he is lone striker vs playing with a partner in 442. It's also pretty clear when watching them that his positioning when he is in the 442 is slightly more withdrawn and he picks the ball up deeper than when he is the lone striker. By my eye he also seems to make the far post run instead of the more scoring near post run when the ball is out on the wing when they are in a 442 which also diminishes his returns. It just seems like whenever they go 442 whoever he is partnered with seems to always get in his way and Aguero just looks worse in general. My take on this, anyway.

    3. Dr. Agabuse
      • 13 Years

If he is the lone striker, he is not necessarily better but his percentage in goal involvement increases.
He is the one playing closest to the opposite goal, hence most of Citys chances fall to him. They also look for him more often and create more chances for him

I basically agree with all the others. He doesn't have to share prime space with another striker and can basically run wherever he likes. This freedom of movement gives him more of a chance to get on the end of any pass or cross into the box without someone else getting their first.

His 4 goals against Spurs were "pass the ball, let him run and shoot" and that worked quite well.

I miss those outputs from him actually, hoping he can fire up against West Ham this week.

I think he's scored most of his goals this year when Citeh have played 4-2-3-1.

As Walshy says above when they play two strikers he seems to play deeper and less in the box.

Yet, naturally he's no target man, that will usually be Dzeko/Bony's role to hold up play, occupy defenders and let Aguero overlap and make his cut. He's done this for years, whether in Spain , Argentina, or here in England.

Exactly, I've seen this talk in the day zone a lot. It's taken a ripple effect now, I can't fathom how after one game theirs a conclusion that 4231 equals good for Aguero, 442 equals bad.

Anyway, some very qualified people like Michael Cox, outside of the boot, spielverlagerung, have all made inquiries into this in the past. I don't think any have to the conclusion that Aguero thrives as a lone striker.

Depends on the game and the opposition tactics I suppose. That said I do think with their personnel that is their best formation usually. Well before Bony signed it was. Some signs of a potentially lethal partnership developing between Bony and Aguero. Bony's price next season will be interesting. Probably stay in the same region as this season.

        1. BeachBadger

Yeah it could be great. Its pretty clear when the second striker is on form, the team is lethal. Dzeko against Newcastle springs to mind.
Bony will prob stay at the same price due to now being a City player. If he nails on a spot for the rest of the season he may even be more expensive.

A lot of the Remy punters made their moves before the injury. Now, they are stuck and the scenario is different than what they expected. Anyways, I just made note of the time element, while also saying not to worry about it too much. It's the same with any and all players when the games come thick and fast.

Overthinking it can definitely get carried away. I honestly think that my quick, first-time assumption on things is the best. Go on thinking about it after that, and it starts to get overwhelming. Transfers are best made with a clear mind that is unencumbered by the weight of too much consideration. 🙂

Good idea. I know some people say price changes don't matter at this time of the year, but one of my line-up options for GW34 would only work if I had at least as much sale value at the end of this week as at the start of it. 0.1m can be as big as 1.0m if you don't have it.

He's 'fit' in the sense that he can play. Rodgers hinted that his playing time will probably be restricted in certain games, though this was before the Newcastle game so may have been a reference to that.

He has an ongoing injury I reckon. Sporadic gametime for the remainder.

    K.Davis Myhill
    Ivan* Skrtel* Schlupp/Morgan* (Clyne PVA)
    Hazard* Fab* Sterling* Hendo* (King*)
    Kun Giroud Benteke

Quite like this draft. Sets myself up well to get Ramsey + Sanchez/Ozil by GW37 to go with Giroud.

as for Ospina...probably want 2 Arsenal mids + Giroud for their double GW. 2 CS points vs 4 for Ospina per game - not losing that much.

    3. NABIL - FPL otai
      • 13 Years
      11 years, 2 months ago

Very good. I know Benteke is in some serious form, but it'll be hard to hold a SGW striker in a DGW. Nevertheless, if he repays you with the plum fixtures till the end, you will have my big respect.

Not keen on King tbh. And I don't like the idea of benching Giroud for him. Defense is great though.

      1. Shifty
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

won't be playing King - he'd be benchfodder, just happened to be 4.2m and all i can afford 🙂 any other ideas for a 4.2 mid? 3rd sub all the way.

Yea thing with Benteke is that if I pick Vardy, it's one more valuable FT to spend after the WC when I want to keep those FTs for DGW37. Toying with Benteke as he does have great fixtures til the end and Villa will probably need goals til the last day.

Ramsey is a good call. SIggy has a couple of decent fixtures alright. See how it goes this week and reassess. All it takes is one assist from Sterling and thats you-4 basically accounted for and a second game in hand

Yeah I have an inkling he'll be benched too.

Yes, Mane blanking off the bench (1) isn't too much of a loss on Boyd's probable score (2)

I think I'm going to get Sterling, Henderson the Rain King and Shrtpl for -4, which seems like a good deal. Coutinho's a lovely little player and an absolute joy to watch but you don't earn points for artistic content, unfortunately.

Hmm yeah. For me Hendo is easily the better option:

                - Cheaper
                - More consistent returns
                - Better form
                - BAP magnet (even if it's one assist)
                - On pens and most set pieces when no Gerrard
                - Sterling is a BAP repellant
                - Sterling could play up front but also at RWB

Highly doubt he will be playing RWB anymore.

and Gerrard will Shirley get game time during DGW.

                  Good luck with Hendo 🙂

Yeah saw that. I've considered that earlier (Migs + Skrtel/Moreno + a mid) but then I like my WC team better when I play 2 LIv mids. Easier for me to make the switch to ARS mids later on too

If I was on WC, then yea probably 2 Liverpool mids.

I just don't want to get rid of Silva for Hendo or Cou (other kids are Eriksen, Cesc, Hazard)

Eriksen out for Sterling for me

Good that you already have 2 CHE mids. So just 1 LIV mid would be ideal. Still 3 LIV players is a must strategy.

Can't wait to get rid of Erik myself. Hopefully he'll reward me one last time.

I've considered WCing in GW35, but then if I do that i need to use my FTs now to get LIV players in preparation (already maxed out CHE). Plus I'm also considering a fit Remy highly.

Would only WC in GW35 if I'm going all out in DGW bringing Hull/Leicester players. Pool and Chelsea has good fixtures till end of the season, so there is no need to take them out... If you want to take out Chelsea/Pool players, then GW35 is ideal.
