Chelsea’s weekend match-winner, Everton’s continued rise up the table and Fantasy managers’ plans for the upcoming double Gameweek 34 are the main focus of this week’s Digest piece.

The Player

When it comes to consistent attacking returns, there’s no question that Eden Hazard has been a cut above his peers. Only twice this season has the Belgian gone more than one match without producing a goal or assist and with attacking returns in all but four of his last 17 starts, he’s head and shoulders above any other option as Chelsea close in on the title.

As a result, it’s perhaps surprising that the Hazard’s 44% ownership isn’t higher, particularly when you factor in the vacillating form of other Fantasy Premier League’s (FPL) high-scoring midfielders this term. Although Alexis Sanchez and David Silva sit in the top three midfield options, both have accumulated points in bursts and been in and out of our squads as a consequence.

As the season started, the likes of Chelsea new boys Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa threatened to outshine the Belgian but both have failed to replicate his stunning ability to rack up the points with regularity. Hazard has now delivered 211 FPL points and has left his competitors for dead after extending his lead to 31 points over Sanchez (180) following the latest round of fixtures. Significantly, that’s his highest ever FPL haul, and with six more matches left to wreak havoc, he’s threatening to pass Yaya Toure’s 241 points from 2013/14.

In light of Hazard’s form and impeccable injury record, the PFA Player of the Year favourite is the standout armband candidate in the Blues’ upcoming double against Arsenal and Leicester – already, he’s earned over 63% of the votes cast in our Captain Poll. With a kind set of fixtures to see out the season, Hazard has the potential to keep on delivering and, subsequently, elevate his price across the Fantasy games for next term. Starting this term at 10.0, he will surely be moved to 11.0 (Toure’s starting price this term) or beyond, though if he can retain the same sort of returns, it’ll be difficult to look beyond the Belgian when the new campaign gets underway.

The Team

Everton are finally clicking into gear following months of insipid football that saw them record a woeful six goals in 12 league ties. The Toffees’ 1-0 victory over Burnley on the weekend means they’ve now matched their longest undefeated streak this term, winning four and drawing one in the last five Gameweeks.

Roberto Martinez is still tinkering with personnel and shape, prompting the adoption of a 4-1-4-1 set-up in their last two matches. With Gareth Barry snuffing out attacks behind a four-man midfield that boasts pace (Kevin Mirallas, Aaron Lennon), creativity (Ross Barkley) and excellent ball retention (James McCarthy), Everton are finally harnessing their talents in a cohesive fashion. This improvement is manifest in the underlying statistics from the last two Gameweeks, with no side mustering more shots on target (16) and only two teams conceding fewer shots inside the box (10) than the Toffees.

Having been used sparingly by former club Tottenham before his loan switch to Goodison Park in January, Lennon is playing with a renewed purpose under Martinez’s tutelage. The diminutive winger has already surpassed the one goal he tallied in over 2000 minutes last season, notching two strikes in his previous four starts, with an assist also thrown in for good measure.

The Merseysiders’ recent upturn in form has harvested three clean sheets in five outings, which has some managers weighing up a move their attacking full-backs, Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman, as Roberto Martinez’ men belatedly remind us why they were such favoured Fantasy assets in his debut campaign at the Goodison helm. Whilst a weekend visit of United is no easy task, showdowns against Villa, Sunderland, West Ham and Spurs in the final four Gameweek afford Everton further reason for optimism and with no European duties to dent their appeal next season, Martinez’ men could be back on our radars once again.

The Talking Point

As we brace ourselves for the third double Gameweek of the season, many Fantasy managers will be more inclined than ever to load up on the main teams on offer.

Not only is this perhaps a by-product of double Gameweek 31, where those who chose to ignore Christian Benteke (23 points), Charlie Austin (21) and Matty Phillips (20) were stung badly, it’s down to the fact that three of the four sides- Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester – have favourable fixtures to see out the season.

The Blues have three home matches in the final four Gameweeks (CPL, LIV, wba, SUN), whilst Liverpool host QPR and Palace in the three rounds of fixtures directly after their double.

Leicester, meanwhile, approach their pair of matches on the back of three successive wins and, like Chelsea, still have a trio of showdowns (NEW, SOT, sun, QPR) in front of their own supporters to follow. Given that Nigel Pearson’s side have notched ten times in their last four, there’s every reason for optimism here – as we’ve seen time and again, those near the bottom of the table can provide an unlikely source of points at this time of year.

Whilst Hull look devoid of form and have dire fixtures for the run-in, the numerous options from the other three candidates could be more than worth the investment. With Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester still having plenty to play for, loading up on the double and taking a four, or even eight-point hit, may ultimately prove the canniest move as a means to climbing the rankings, as Benteke and co. so emphatically reminded us earlier this month.

Here's my argument for the pool mid triple - up.
If you get sterling, hendo and couts and Liverpool keep a clean sheet, their cs points effectively amount to skirtle or moreno clean sheet points. So...The triple up gives you a free defender if a clean sheet is kept.

NB I won't be doing this because my arsenal exit strategy would end up costing any clean sheet gained!!!!

    What do you think?

    1. The Sarjeant

But if you had a defender and two midfielders, you'd get even more clean sheet points.

        Er....yep.
You're the one who stated on the previous page that you should always play your more attacking player. My argument here is that the 3 mid give you the attack point potential, AND cover the cleany of those that go 2 + 1.
        Know what I mean?

      • 11 Years

2 clean sheets you mean. I'm not 100% convinced they will get 2 cleanies in the DGW.

      More like 1 cleanie = 3pts

See what your trying to say tho

      1. DF
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 9 months ago

No. I do mean 1 clean sheet. Defenders get 4 for a cs, 3 mids get 3. I'm saying the 3 covers the 4.

      Very strange argument.
If Liverpool get a clean sheet :
3 mids get total 3 cs points while 2 mids + def/gk get total 6 cs points

      1. DF
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 9 months ago

Sorry - the premise is the 3 mids provide potential for attacking returns. Those who go 2 + 1 are looking for the cs potential. I argue that the 3 points for the mids effectively behaves like a free defender.

      This is the maths,

NOTE : It is done taking into consideration that none of the 3 L'Pool players that you are taking will neither score nor will assist. So what we get here is the bare minimum you can have with the two possible combination being discussed here. Also, what you infer is up to you.

      Scenario 1 : L'Pool CS

      3 midfielders : 3 Points + (6 minute Points) = 9 Points minimum
      2 midfielders + 1 defender : 6 Points + (6 minute Points) = 12 Points minimum

      Scenario 2 : No L'Pool CS

      3 midfielders : 0 Points + (6 minute Points) = 6 Points minimum
      2 midfielders : 0 Points + (6 minute Points) = 6 Points minimum

      1. fusen
        • 14 Years
        10 years, 9 months ago

And then the three midfielders have a much higher chance of attacking returns.

So you're giving out the attacking potential for 3 points

        1. A-VB
          • 11 Years

I don't think that if a team keeps CS, 3 BPs for their defenders is a given too.

      2. DF
        • 12 Years
        10 years, 9 months ago

        Cheers for that.
Not really my point though. I'm working on the assumption that we make our pics based on maximum potential. The potential for big returns is greater with the 3 mids. By picking the 3 mids you cover (almost) the defender's cs. Thus the argument that the 3 mids effectively come with 3/4 of a free defender

I think that's a bit harsh to say.

If you take the maths allied with Fusen's comment, it covers what you are effectively saying.

                10 years, 9 months ago

Sorry. You're right. That was harsh.
What I mean is you haven't actually done the maths. You've done a very simple sum. The maths would factor in probabilities of attacking returns, completely distorting the bottom lines of your sums.
Now that is maths that I can't do. If you can, I'd love to see it.
                Sorry again for being harsh.

I could have included the probabilities that you are talking about, but that would have made it biased.

Which I don't want it to be.

But you can take a clue from Fusen's comment above.

From a rational cost perspective I see DGW transfer at 2pts per transfer rather than the usual 4pts.
If a player plays twice its 4pts rather than the 2pts, hence offsetting the original cost.
To me that is just rational thinking, with no consideration of the players brought in.

However not all DGW player are not made equal.
-4 to bring in a Hull defender, probably not.
-4 to bring in a Sterling or Hazard twice against with decent fixtures.
That to me is no cost at all.
What is scary is opportunity cost, in which your rivals hold those assets.

For all the posts, about is a Liverpool player (e.g. Hendo/Sterling/Skertl/Moreno) or Chelsea player (Iva, Terry, Fab etc) worth a hit.
    Terry for -4 = Yes
    IVA for -4 = Yes
    etc

3 Chelsea, 3 Liverpool at the very least.
Leicester players if you are feeling punty (plus good fixtures following)
Hull players, only if something comes to you in a dream

It also may have an impact on future gameweeks which you should consider

I'm thinking there's minimal impact on future gameweeks even if loaded up

Chelsea and Liverpool have decent fixtures. Even Leicester.

        After this gameweek.
Will keep Hazard + one chelsea defender for rest of the season (I've nearly had Haz&Terry all season already). Sterling + one liverpool defender probably for rest of the season.

With regard leicester players (vardy, schlup, cambiaso), they are cheap enough for bench fodder and creating more value for players you want to bring in later.

I can easily see myself playing the same DGW players for GW35, with no transfers.

        Leicester v Newcastle
        Chelsea v Palace
        Liverpool v QPR

Then have 2FT for GW36 in time to work the Arsenal players back in in for GW37.

Adding to this. You can also factor in taking out players with poor gw35 fixture for a liverpool def playing qpr next. huge upside.

Taking hits to get cambiasso and vardy is ridiculous! Vardy with 3 goals all season.... leicester also playing chelsea and a defensively solid burnley at home. Regardless of fixtures Vardy will still be rubbish until end of season. Cambiasso will probably not be fit for two games in a week also. People forget how old he is....

      Everyone blinded by last dgw.

Having Sanchez for his GW8-10 points hauls of 13, 16, 16, and captained GW10 when his ownership was relatively low, was great. That 8k GW rank was the only exceptional week I've really had all season.

Having Jovetic and Mata GW2 was really good as well. GW8 wasn't as great for me as others. It was decent - 75pts including Baines 15 and Sanchez 13 - but I didn't have Tadic or Pelle so it was pretty painful.

Most people only got Austin and/or Benteke though. Both top scoring FPL players.

People are falling over themselves to get Leicester players in for good FPL players who only have a single GW, despite one of Leicester's games being against Chelsea.

At the moment you'd think Leicester have turned into Barcelona and Vardy is Messi.....

To be fair, the plays that did well in that DGW were players in form so it wasn't that surprising that Phillips, Benteke and Austin returned points.

Who are the form players for a Liverpool team in a slump?

Who's scoring all the goals for Chelsea as they grind results out?

Leicester are in form but they are a rotation nightmare who share the points.

I think this DGW is quite tricky and most of us are going in blind.

      Any Puncheon owners here?

Will you play him against Hull or do you think he's done as a fantasy option?

If I keep him this GW I'll probably play him. Beyond this GW he isn't much use.

I think he's a belter of a pick. If this weren't a DGW folk would be playing bolassie puncheon and murrey.
As it stands I'm playing Murray and expecting big returns.

I don't think he's done as a fantasy option. He is what he is...he takes good set pieces, pings lots of crosses in and takes corners. There's lots of assist potential with him, but more when he plays through the centre. He is worth his price tag definitely and can get a double digit score any game.

Fwiw I'll either bench him or Ramsey still undecided. Fixture probably will sway it to playing him.
