Everton’s late-season momentum hands Louis van Gaal his heaviest defeat as United manager after an emphatic 3-0 win at Goodison. Elsewhere, Chelsea grind out a goalless draw at the Emirates to take a major step towards clinching the title.

Revitalised Toffees march on

Everton extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Goodison Park. Goals from unlikely sources propelled the Toffees into a lead before half time, with James McCarthy netting the opener (his second of the campaign) after a sweeping counter attack and John Stones bagging a debut goal courtesy of a towering header from a corner. Kevin Mirallas made his mark from the bench in the second 45, beating the offside trap to notch his second in as many weeks.

Mirallas’ back-to-back strikes strengthens his claim for a starting berth, having been usurped by Leon Osman for the Red Devils clash. For now, a lack of security of starts limits our interest in the Belgian winger. In the only other change enacted by manager Roberto Martinez, Arouna Kone dropped out to accommodate the return of Romelu Lukaku as the hosts continued with a 4-1-4-1 system.

Leighton Baines reasserted his potential for attacking returns with an assist to complement Everton’s fourth clean sheet in six Gameweeks. The Merseysiders’ run-in (avl, SUN, whu, TOT) certainly works in favour of the English left-back, yet Lukaku’s reinstatement ensures that Baines slips further down the spot-kick pecking order. Furthermore, with a sizeable proportion Fantasy managers already owning one of Branislav Ivanovic (7.7) or John Terry (6.9) – who boast three consecutive clean sheets – few will want to divert funds towards another high-priced defender in light of Arsenal coverage being of paramount importance ahead of their double Gameweek 37.

United wilt without Carrick

Having chalked up six successive wins before Michael Carrick’s calf injury, United have now lost two on the trot without the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder – emphasising what a key figure he is to Louis van Gaal’s outfit. That being said, United will fancy their chances of a recovery in the their next two outings (WBA, cry), before a home tie against Arsenal in the penultimate Gameweek of the season presents another stern challenge.

In the absence of Carrick, Van Gaal named fit-again Daley Blind as the sitting midfield in a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Radamel Falcao dropping to the bench and Wayne Rooney reclaiming the lone striker berth. The ex-Toffees academy star suffered an injury in the dying embers of the encounter and was forced off with a knee problem – Van Gaal said post-match that the severity of the injury is as of yet unknown.

Gunners rearguard shows resolve

Arsenal’s defence tallied their seventh clean sheet in 13 fixtures following a 0-0 draw with Chelsea. They’ve conceded just seven across those matches, too, encouraging investment in the Gunners’ rearguard ahead of their double. Hector Bellerin (4.6) and Nacho Monreal (4.8) immediately catch the eye by virtue of their modest price tags, while Laurent Koscielny’s (6.0) four bonus points in two outings and greater security of starts also renders him a strong option.

On the flip side, Arsenal’s attacking contingent offered little in the way of goal threat for Chelsea’s visit to the Emirates. Joint-top scorer Olivier Giroud drew a blank for the second consecutive Gameweek, fashioning just two (off-target) shots on goal. Nonetheless, the French marksman should attract a flurry of new owners in the coming weeks, with Arsenal facing two agreeable match-ups (hul, SWA) before their double.

Chelsea rebuff last title contenders

Blues boss Jose Mourinho named one change from the XI that bested Manchester United 1-0, with Willian recalled in place of Didier Drogba – who was only fit enough to be named on the bench. With no recognised striker in the starting line-up, the Portuguese boss opted to field Oscar in the false nine role ahead of Willian, who operated in “the hole” behind his international teammate.

As expected – knowing Arsenal were the only team capable of staging an unlikely title challenge – Mourinho set his team out to contain, restricting the hosts to just one shot on target. Those managers in possession of Chelsea defenders were rewarded when they carded their third consecutive shut-out. Hopes of back-to-back clean sheets largely depends on whether Leicester City – who’ve been in fine form of late, netting 11 goals in five matches – can sustain their momentum when they play host to the league’s best defence on Wednesday.

Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas made it a clean sweep of blanks for Chelsea’s and Liverpool’s high-ownership midfielders in the first fixture of their respective doubles. Loic Remy’s continued absence and Diego Costa’s doubtful status for the Foxes tie offers little incentive for Mourinho to set up any differently at the King Power Stadium, though Oscar may well be set to miss out after being sent to hospital for head scans following a collision with Arsenal shot-stopper David Ospina.

    Scoutcast questions

All being well we should have a live scoutcast tonight at 10pm. Could you leave your questions here.

Also we are particularly interested in hearing from those who have wildcarded to see how it went. For those who wildcarded we want to know
    1. Score so far
    2. Your key success (eg N'Doye capt) or key failure (Nugent/Schlupp etc)

      I activated WC.
I'm on 59 with 9 left. Didn't really have a KEY succes, but I'll say going double che defence with Terry and Ivan, rather then getting Cesc.

Schmeichel was a nice little addition as well

Remy and Schlupp on the other hand....

Happy with my 58 points from wildcard so far.

N'Doye, Schmeichel and Huth being the highlights. Moreno getting injured was annoying but just bad luck.

Managed to get a green arrow from 153 upto 72 and still 10 more players on Tuesday and Wednesday 🙂 Let's hope Moreno starts this time.

Will Tom Fenley be sacked from the Sri Lankan Cricket Team following his exploits (or lack thereof) on Saturday?

51 with 9 DGWers to go. Double Leicester defence and Vardy were successes. Moreno the obvious disaster.

I activated WC too. 61 with 9 to play. Hoping Sterling (c) comes good.

Getting Collins in was a risk and didn't look good after his hand ball. It's only 6 points, but they feel great!

      On WC.

55 points with 8 + (c) to go. Key success so far would be the defence of Schmiechel, Ivan, Skrtel and Terry.

Downside would be going for Austin as differential and getting me a -1...

Question - what is everyones exit strategy for the DGW players? Does Liverpool's poor show offensively suggest we should dump Liverpool mids and hang on to the Leicester/Hull players longer than possibly intended?

Happy with my wc. 60 points so far with 10 DGW players left, Hazard(c).

Two big successes were 1) doubling on Chelsea's defence rather than going with Cesc and 2) a risky Aguero/Vardy/N'doye frontline going very well.

      Schlupp was the obvious failure.

Similar to Merseyside Red, I activated the WC this week, currently sitting on 59 with 9 DGW players to play (+ (c) Hazard).

Happy with my choice to go with bring in Ivanovic (despite his annoying YC) and double on CHE defense over Fabregas. Also, despite benching him yesterday, I'm also happy with my decision to bring in Koscielny for the run-in whilst on WC.

On the negative, it appears as though my decision to keep Silva may have been a poor one.

No wildcard but I brought in Morgan & Huth as part of a 16pt hit (already owning Schmeichel). So far the triple up is going quite nicely. 🙂

Question: Charlie Adam is in a rich vein of form, garnering attacking returns in 4 of his last 5. Time to invest, or are mid-table Stoke likely to take their foot off the gas?

Chelsea defensive assets - shed or keep?

Will there be rotation at the back? Will Chelsea attempt to shut critics up by putting opponents to the sword once the league is in the bag, leaving themselves exposed defensively? Will Ivanobeast be unshackled?

      Question/ topic.

How much so we think motivation/ something to play for will affect teams?

For example West Ham and Stoke are basically on the beach. Maybe Aston Villa players will be better in the last few weeks than Chelsea players? (potential rotation when the league is wrapped up).

      1. 55 so far

      2.
Major Success: Put in N'Doye for Kane last minute.
Major Failure: Moreno & Schlupp as my Liverpool & Leicester defenders. Rival went Morgan & Skrtel for 18 point swing 🙁

Minor success: Hazard blanking so far as went Sterling captain!
Minor failure: Going Fabregas instead of double Chelsea defense and picking Ivan, the lowest scoring Chelsea defender

      I used WC.

      1. 63 with 10 more to go.
      2. Big Dame N'Doye! But had no balls to captain him. Also got him when he played against QPR, scored a goal and had 0.0% ownership, so he becoming one of my favourite FPL players. 🙂 Also thanks God I bought Schmeichel for Leicester defence cover and sold Schlupp for Chester (and he got bonus 😀 ). All my mids blanked, but all my strikers scored (Kun, Vardy, N'Doye).

      Moreno was my failure tho.

Now, when I look better, it was more logical to captain one of N'Doye/Vardy. Their teams had to attack to stay in PL. Liverpool and Chelsea on the other hand would be happy with draw (well, Chelsea atleast. Liverpool can't score anyway).

When transfers require downgrades to provide funds for arsenal players are you now looking at Sunderland assets too?

      Score of 59.

How much does the golden boot really affect players, managers, and team decisions?

You hear a lot on here that a player should or shouldn't be brought or sold because they are gunning for the golden boot but does it really matter?

Are more players now likely to pass to Kane? Is he going to shoot more? Will Costa make more appearances over last 4 or be rested to allow Remy and co to play even though he's close to the golden boot

In light of HuttonDressedAsLahm's inside scoop - do any of the Scoutcast team have a tenuous connection to a professional footballer that may prove useful?

I wildcarded and am on 54. Particular points of failure are Moreno and Bruce - especially now that Stones is laughing at me with 15 points locked on the bench.

      Used my WC...Awesome results.

at 73 with 10DGW players left, Hazza captain
Success - buying Morgan over Schlupp, Skrtel over Moreno, Nd'oye, Schmeichel, selling some wood: Murray, Fellaini, Bolasie

Team looks good for the DGW with Ramsey,PvA & Panti on the bench and next GW as well. Will be saving my trannie.

Jumped from 10K to 4K and bound to get even up once this GW is over. Was trailing my ML by 40 points, now look set to overtake the leader in 1 week..

About questions, can we have a discussion on Arsenal mids, Benteke vs Giroud. Also, please please please mention Avengers 😎

      1. 51
      2. Minor successes: Skrtel and Schmeichel late WC picks (instead of original Courtois & Moreno).
Failures: decision to swap McShane for Schlupp late in the week, & decision to keep Murray instead of a DGW striker.

      Questions:
-Sterling's chances next game (captain particular interest)?
-Leicester's potential to upset Chelsea....? Small chance but they seem to have fire in them.
      - Best DGWs to keep for the rest of the season..?

      WC

      57, 11 to play

      Success:
N'Doye, Skrtel, Harper (alas, no Schmeichel)

Possible failure to be determined, but still chance to come good:
Ulloa over Vardy, Costa gambit, Captain Hazard

Middle of the road (could be better, could be worse):
Huth (not Morgan, not Schlupp), Sterling, Henderson, Cambiasso, Ivanovic (that YC)

Think my 1st draft outscored the final draft via tinkering to get Costa in, though certainly topped in mid-frame draft that had Austin.

      Questions:
Are relegation battle players worth investment as they have the most to fight for now?
Worth holding N'Doye for Burnley in week 36?
Which Sunderland striker for 37, Wickham, Defoe or none?

Hit the WC button with my ML leader having a 39 point lead, now we're halfway through the GW and it's now a 1 point lead!!! Amazing what holding your WC can do. 😀 (Have 9 DGWers to his 3. Looking good for me) On 51 points ATM.

Would've been so much better if Schlupp and Moreno had started though. 😕 I even had enough in the bank for Skrtel, but for some reason the transfer just didn't cross my mind 😆
Bringing N'Doye, Vardy and a double Chelsea defence were the main instigators for my comeback. N'Doye thanks to Ruth!

I think many here planned to ship Sterling after next weeks QPR fixture, before they travel to Stamford Bridge the following week. Now that Sturridge may not return until next season, should we consider holding Sterling?

exactly my reasoning behind keeping sterling. bound to end in tears - but it does look good for his fantasy prospects.

don't understand why Lambert isn't being given the chance to lead the line though

All the logic says keep. Trouble is Sterling has played that position many times this season and not delivered. Only in GW1 has he produced more than 1 goal/assist in any game.

terribly frustrating to own that's for sure. well the plan was to get rid of him - but with the Sturridge news, it seems logical to keep.

Perhaps its best to just stick with the transfer plan laid out with my GW34 WC.

i dont think Sterling will be playing striker again

look at last week, Balo / Borrini all given chance...Sterling will be on the flanks, more so season coming to a close, Balo / Borrini / Lambert will be given a chance to showcase what they got before getting sold!

My question.. given that we are all fpl addicts we get extremely fustrated when we have a poor gameweek. After two or three red arrows in a row have you ever felt like quiting fpl? And if so how close have you come from quiting fpl?

For the next DGW, would you sacrifice Hazard for Sanchez?

Do we think Chelsea will be let loose once the league's won and their assets will become more valuable or will they stick the boring, effective football they've won the league with?
The decision might be able to allow us to sneak in a few cheeky punts at the end of the season.

On wildcard, 73 with 10 to play.

N'Doye (c) was the key success so far although a tough decision that may still be proved wrong.

Schlupp missing was the only disappointment.

The main thing is that (as Jonty once pointed out) wildcards are for a period of GWs, not just one. And with Ospina, Giroud and PvA on my bench I am well set towards GW37 already.

Ah, you're a modest guy, Ruth!. At this point, I can't see how captaining n'doye could be proved wrong, and I imagine you're saying that someone else could still out score him. At a minimum, you've got 26 points plus whatever happens tomorrow. Excellent, ballsy call on your part.

On wildcard. 69 thus far with ten left to play. N'Doye and Morgan were big producers for me. Lack of midfield production like many others is a disappointment, but also a wash. In hindsight, two Chelsea defenders over two Chelsea mids seems like the better decision. I've also got two Arsenal and one Sunderland on the bench so feel I'm well positioned for the next dgw in week 37. Thanks again to Ruth and this forum for providing excellent advice!

Question - with Watford clinching a promotion place last weekend, which other two teams do you want to be promoted whether it's for personal or FPL reasons.

WC Success - just before I was about to finalise my squad Acqua advised me to do Ospina + Gilks > Schmeichel + Pantilimon - still owe him a huge thank you!

WC Failures - took a punt on Mata and Benteke and failed miserably lol.

But hey, I'm cruising through to the last eight of the Members Cup 🙂 (unless Coutinho's second game beats the combined scores of Mignolet, Huth, Henderson, Cambiasso and Elmohamady by at least 15 points). Fortunately my opponent did not have a wildcard.

It must feel a bit like that and isn't really under your control, but it only requires a few miracles.

The second part probably depends on the quantity of water and the size of the fork (are you allowed to use the handle end rather than the prongs?)

I played my wildcard this week. So far I have 44 points. At present that has given me an increase in OR of about 1000 places. My successes so far include bringing in Vardy as well as choosing Mignolet over Moreno. My biggest failure so far would be bringing in Schlupp. I don't think I can complain too much about Koscielny points on my bench as I put him in the third bench position. Going with two midfielders each from Chelsea and Liverpool has not brought attacking returns yet but there is still a game to play. I'm set up to bring in Sanchez for Fabregas on a free transfer this week and feel I still have a reasonable chance at hitting the top 10,000 by the end of the season.

WC in play and fluttering. 57 pts with 9 more to play including captain Hazard.

Double Chelsea defence and Morgan over Schlupp was a success. Tinkered with Schmichel and Skrtel but choose Mignolet and Morgan. Kept Silva as I guessed he would play but 1 pt was a poor return, was considering getting Ramsey for double.

Question: will Vardy take another injection in his foot to be fit for Chelsea?

Will Chelsea be back to scoring 3 or 4 goals a match like in the early part of the season after the league is wrapped? Does that depend of Costa's fitness? Will they enjoy their football without the pressure or will they take their foot off the gas and play the subs like Zouma and Cuadrado. Maybe if you can look at Mourinho's record with past clubs (Chelsea first stint, Inter and Madrid), we can have an idea of what he will do.

Is Koschielny the best Arsenal defender to have for the double? Does his baps potential outweigh the risk of him picking up a niggling injury? He is very injury prone. Or is the safety provided by Mertsackr more important?

Still sitting on WC. Rank 3351. Never felt need to play thus far with decent planning for DGW (7, notwithstanding Schlupp). Rip team up now or sit nicely with 2 Lei, 3 Liv and 3 Che, Aguero, Kane and Giroud, hold off...til when lol? or never play it for added bragging rights in ML - 100 pts clear. Would prefer to go all out for best OR ever, but not sure what to do that would make big strides.

      Krul;
      Ivanovic, PvA, Skrtel;
      Hazard, Fabregas, Silva, Sterling, Henderson;
      Aguero, Kane.

Subs: Pantilimon; Vardy, Dawson, Naughton. (£2.8m in the bank)

What to do with this team?:

      A) Kane -> Giroud, followed by Ivanovic -> Koscielny (GW 36) and Silva -> Sanchez (GW 37)
      B) Silva -> Sanchez, followed by Ivanovic -> Koscielny (GW 36) and Kane -> Giroud (GW 37)
      C) Sterling -> Sanchez (Have no idea what to do in the following weeks if I do this.)

That looks like a wildcard team. 😉

In that case I'd be very tempted to save FT. Vardy may not play against Chelsea but he will against Newcastle. And the longer you wait with bringing Arsenal assets in the less chance of getting one of them injured prior to GW37.

You must be having a good GW so far.

Pearson hasn't ruled out playing a weakened side against Chelsea, so that and the painkilling injection leads me to think he won't play.

Thinking of a straight swap from Fabianski, which frees up 0.4. That 0.4 can be added to my funds, meaning I can afford Fabregas -> Sanchez as a straight swap.

All of this planning for the Arsenal double and it has the potential to leave a sour taste in the mouth for all.. Can see lots of rotation and anyone who predicts right is purely down to guess work and nothing more.

Nobody is safe, but liking Sanchez and possibly Koscielny as safer bets. This is all down to opinion of course.

With that many games in such a short space of time, with a cup final ahead, Wenger will surely chop and change. Now, the Sunderland game at home is obviously easier than United away. But how will Wenger play that? Will he put a full strength team out at United or tinker there? Giroud was benched for the cup game there from memory and they won that easily (I'm sure I'll be corrected if that is tosh!) or will he rotate in the more profitable fixture at home?

There is an argument for getting single gameweekers with great fixtures here, or putting the armband on one even. Despite this weekend, Charlie Austin at home to Newcastle stands out. With Kane at home to Hull and Aguero at Swansea, a differential here potentially would be NOT having Giroud. Depends if you are chasing and want/need to roll the dice..
