Michael Dawson grabs the match-winner as Hull defeat Liverpool to move four points clear of the drop zone. The Merseysiders serve up a double Gameweek to forgot and their chances of Champions League football look all but extinguished after failing to score in either of this week’s matches.

Dawson header edges Tigers closer to safety

The adventurous minority that backed Hull to come up trumps in this double were richly rewarded as Steve Bruce’s men served up a second consecutive victory. Back-to-back clean sheets ensured that three of the highest-scoring defenders (Paul McShane, James Chester, Michael Dawson) in this round of fixtures were from the Tigers’ rearguard, with Dawson’s winning goal affording him an eye-catching 21 points. Furthermore, Steve Harper’s 19 points rendered him the choice goalkeeper, having only usurped Allan McGregor between the sticks in Gameweek 32.

Dame N’Doye failed to score with his single shot at goal, yet his 6,000+ new owners were already vindicated in their leftfield acquisition by his brace last time out against Crystal Palace. Ahmed Elmohamady, meanwhile, bagged his fourth assist of the campaign after delivering the cross for Dawson’s headed effort.

Hull now embark on a brutal run of fixtures (ARS, BUR, tot, MUN) to round of their season yet will be encouraged by the presence of three home clashes and clearly have the momentum on their side. That being said, in light of the fact that Arsenal have only failed to score once in their previous 13 fixtures while conceding just seven goals, their potential for Fantasy returns looks slim on the weekend.

Reds stumble towards finish line

Liverpool succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Hull City at the KC Stadium, meaning Brendan Rodgers’ side now have just one win in five outings. For the second match running, the visitors laboured to carve out any meaningful opportunities, mustering just six shots inside the box and not a single big chance.

Rodgers named one changed from the XI that were held to a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion, with Joe Allen recalled in place of Steven Gerrard – who was rested in preparation for the their home tie against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday. Jordon Ibe lined up on the right of a 4-3-3 set-up, while Philippe Coutinho dropped back into the midfield three and Alberto Moreno missed out again with a knock.

Like the Baggies clash, Raheem Sterling offered very little goal threat, fashioning two attempts (one inside the box) throughout the encounter and managing only five penalty box touches. Furthermore, the England international engineered a solitary chance for his team-mates and fired in just one cross. Sterling was drafted in by a 260,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers for the Reds’ pair of fixtures but proved a massive letdown and many will already be looking for a way out in the lead up to Arsenal’s double Gameweek 37. The fleet-footed wide man has drawn blanks in five of his last seven matches and is posting statistics that reveal he’s struggling to impart his influence on matches. Priced at 8.6, his 36% ownership will need to witness a rapid upturn in productivity as the likes of the equally priced Aaron Ramsey (two goals, three assists in five) draw their attention.

Mario Balotelli had another forgettable night as the spearhead of the Merseysiders’ attack in his second successive start, chalking up just one penalty box touch and two attempts at goal. In response, Rodgers may well elect to afford Rickie Lambert a rare start up top in Liverpool’s next match-up or shift Sterling up front again as his side’s season stutters to a close.

Philippe Coutinho, once again, was the architect of much of Liverpool’s positive play. Ultimately, however, the Brazilian livewire has failed to net in his last seven starts, despite notching more shots (12) than any other midfielder this Gameweek. One might suggest, given that only two of this efforts arrived inside the box, that this impressive tally is also reflective of the side’s general inability to generate clear-cut chances of late.

Despite Liverpool’s disappointing displays in their double Gameweek, those managers that invested heavily in the club will likely hold fire on exit strategies until after QPR’s trip to Anfield on the weekend. A Gameweek 36 trip to Chelsea looks the ideal time to part company with the Reds’ misfiring attackers.

I am seeing a lot of people looking to take out Liverpool mids for Arsenal this week.

Do we really expect Arsenal to perform against an in form Hull side? Would it not be better off holding Coutinho/Sterling this week at home to QPR, and look to bring in Arsenal for them next week?

I have to admit, as a Sterling owner his performances this week are slightly alarming. I figure QPR at home would be stupid to take him out for though. I have Giroud and Bellerin as Arsenal 'coverage' too.

can't say as I am too confident in holding pool players this weekend, but hull won't necessarily be a walk in the park. also, I don't know who I want from arsenal yet, and if I end up with sanchez then I need to save this week.

Short answer: best to save this week and use 2ft next week.

I'm keeping all 3 LIV and 3 CHE players this week (Giroud in is my transfer this week for either Kane or N'Doye) then getting rid of 2 LIV for 2 ARS in GW36. Bank the GW37 transfer for the final crazy week.

It was a disaster for those who picked the popular picks such as Liverpool midfielders. It was a sensation for those investing in Hull. Those like Granville who drafted in Harper took a risk and it paid off handsomely, or RuthNZ who captained N'Doye. good dgwk for them.

N'Doye was certainly a great shout but I think it's too early to say captaining him paid off, until Hazard has finished tonight.

Even if Hazard gets more than 12 its still paid off I think. You are forgetting the extra invisable flair points involved in FPL. A manager can dine out for years on a successful N'Doye captaincy...can us Hazard captainers say the same?

I agree. Hazard or N'Doye was a tough decision to make. I thought Palace would be good for N'Doye and Leicester would be good for Eden.

But look, 30 points from a (c) in DGW is fine, I'm happy with that. It's what Kane scored in GW28 when I captained Aguero instead. 🙁

I didn't personally get the Liverpool mids hype - hence going for Migs and Skrtel (C) which was OK I guess pending on Haz tonight.

Yes I did get Couts in as a differential to try and make an impression on Simon March (easier to make one on a diamond!) but Liverpool had previously shown away from home a lack of goals but decent defending with Skrtel in place.

Fair play to those with Hull players - I really just saw Palace scoring at least one and Pool maybe winning 0-1. N'Doye could of had 5 v Palace who went from form heros to zeros in two weeks.

Can't look past the Arsenal guys though and I'll be investing heavily with my non-Aguero money (while getting some money on Kun for a QPR hatty as cover!). May find room for Defoe at his price too...

This is true. Hopefully Sterlo and Hendo will deliver this very weekend!

The fight at the bottom is terrific. I thought Hull and Leicester were certs for the drop a few weeks ago, and thought Burnley would stay up (which may still happen but looking unlikely). I would love to see Leicester Hul and Burnleyall stay up TBH.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Double gameweek surprises

Dawson, Harper and N'Doye are the surprise stars of Gameweek 34's double fixtures. Will Gameweek 37 be the same with Wickham, Welbeck and 0'Shea emerging triumphant?

Or will it revert to type, leaving those with Giroud, Sanchez and Koscielny with the last laugh?

Most should have no problem fielding Wickham and O'Shea together with three of the Arsenal prime picks. More important will be:

      1) which Arsenal player to captain
      2) go with Benteke or Wickham for 3rd striker spot

There will be fewer surprises as there is only one extra fixture. This GW was on because of the four teams most loaded up on three and completely discounted one, whom then went on to do well.

Nobody saw Hull's last two coming. They'd lost to Southampton and Swansea, and a drab 0-0 at Leicester was their last clean sheet.

So, for Sunderland, either they'll show some form and fight to make us take interest, or or not then it's a complete gamble whether they'll kick into life against Leicester for their DGW opener.

Liverpool have been in poor form - barely over 1 goal a game since beating City, so struggling to break down the "real" West Brom then falling flat against a surprisingly resilient Hull team isn't actually a huge surprise.

Arsenal, however, are in great form - 9 wins on the trot since the Monaco shambles only ended by Jose's bus parking; with Hull and Swansea both bearable they'll most likely arrive in good spirits and pressing for second with Man U and City breathing down their necks, plus the personal motivation of a cup final starting spot.

So, as it stands just now, it'll be all Arsenal and not an upset, unlike this week. Unless it's not, of course.

I've already been planning on having 3 Sunderland players (got 2, buying Larsson) so this bodes well.

Arsenal's midfield is such a crap shoot anything could happen. I can afford Cazorla so I'm hoping he plays both.

I will most likely have PvA, Larsson, Wickham, But it all depends on how Sunderland are playing and what situation they are in.

The tougher decision for me is Sanchez or Ozil. If I go with Ozil I'll have enough banked to bring Costa in for GW38 when I think Chelsea may go to town on Sunderland.

One thing I noticed about commentary on here from gw28-31-34 is that many people wanted to establish some sort of guidelines for what a DGW would produce.

After 28, the conventional wisdom seemed to be they aren't that great.
After 31, it was that they are amazing.
Now as 34 closes, the Liverpool horror show has the narrative once again full of despair.

I don't think a dgw works like that. Too much unpredictability with a short turnaround between games, late season form in flux, etc. makes me think you need to load up on a combination of established stars and differentials and then make your captaincy pick based on whether you are punting, chasing, or holding off the competition. Every time. Otherwise you are allowing the variability to take over if you change strategies from week to week, especially considering that the teams are playing each other in the second leg of the dgw, so your defenders and attackers can't both offer big returns very easily.

      Defoe c here.

This is why this was a great doublegameweek for wildcarders as they were able to cover more probabilities such as Hull clean sheets and goals.

Gwk 34 was definitely the best week to wildcard. I did well from my pre Christmas one and got into the top 1,000 on the back of it....but overall points wise gwk 34 was the best week to do it.

And now they have to offload those Hull players quick smart and probably the Liverpool ones a week later, and also try and bring in Arsenal (and maybe Sunderland) assets in time for GW37, whereas those that didn't have a WC probably don't have any Hull liabilities, and probably already have a few Arsenal & Sunderland players already in place. Given Arsenal's fixtures from here on in, some of the points gained by those with a WC this week may get pegged back.

Nice move getting the Hull as an uber. It seems to have worked well for many on here, but I am not sure itis the case that gw34 is the winner.

With most having six DGWers left, it might still be too early to tell, but the only guy I missed out on that I seriously considered. Having Austin instead and Siggy on the bench does sting, but it is a -15 for me this week since I would not have captained NDoye.

My early season wild card was worth much more than that, as it paved the way for the miracle of gw8. I don't think all the late season wild Carders are counting the points and value they might have acquired in the first few months.

I did Naughton>McShane -4. You'd think I'd be pleased with the 12 points, but taking into account the hit, and the fact I benched Koscielny (9), I am 1 point down!!!! You couldn't make it up!

Still I now have Sanchez, Kos, PvA and just done Remy>Giroud this week. May well sell Fellaini for a Sunderland mid nearer the time...

i will be dringing in giroud an ramsey for remy an cout, already got ospina, think he will be nailed on for both, may take a gamble on wickham, hope he repeats his form from end of last season ! like most rotation is the worry for ars, 3 games in the last week, will they get more gametime in dgw, then rested on saturday, and you end up with 3 ars on the last gw,could be nailbiting for those chasing leagues, no way the big guns are gonna do 90 mins in dgw, then on the sat,its chance we have to take, wenger may give people like wellbeck, walcott, wiltshire, arteta, debuchy game time for fitness ready for cup final,,,think sun players are more likely to get more game time in dgw, there not so appealing !

You would certainly have no reason to change them, ok, this DGW hasn't been big, a lot thought it wouldn't but it had to be played as the risk not was too big.

Those 9 have home games against Palace, QPR and Newcastle so it's strong but I guess it's a lot of hope on 3 results, if 2 results go against you then the week suddenly looks grim.

    Giroud Aguero Kane

He doesn't have Southampton cover so lose Bertie for Kos. Aguero should be a good differential for you.

My ML rival is on his wc and already cut a 106 point lead to 66 this gw. Any guesses what my current 66 point lead will be after tonight? Players tonight are -

    Me - Terry, Hazard (c)
Rival - Schlupp, Schmeichel, Vardy, Ivanovic, Fabregas, Hazard

If Schlupp is out then he has koscielny on the bench!!!!!!

    Am I fecked?

At worst you may lose an extra 10 points, which isn't bad with a few weeks to go
But one hazard goal could give you more points than him

Nor do I, but you'd think/expect Bayern Munich to have the capability to allow for a few injuries to big players.

I hope they get tonked though 😉

I started the season off casually, in a ML with some guys at work. Around GW 20 started following on here and tried to make subs accordingly, however my transfer luck has been dreadful.

Just some of my trannies in the last month or two. (mostly injured)

    Moreno (for his double GW)
    Silva
    Oscar
    Rose
    Vardy

I'm frustrated and around 100 points behind in my ML, but can't wait to start nice season and give them a nice ass-whoopin
