Saido Berahino bags a brace as West Brom sweep aside newly-crowned champions Chelsea at the Hawthorns. Chris Brunt is also amongst the goals, whilst Cesc Fabregas sees red as the Blues lose for only the third time this term.

Blues pay the penalty for complacency

Chelsea fell to a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at the hands of West Bromwich Albion as their 16-match unbeaten run came crashing to an end. Despite suggesting he would field a number of young players at the Hawthorns, Jose Mourinho made just three alterations to his starting XI, drafting in Diego Costa, Gary Cahill and Nemanja Matic in place of Kurt Zouma, John Obi Mikel and Willian.

Costa’s inclusion came as a slight surprise given that Mourinho previously stated he would only field the Spain international again this campaign if the Blues were in desperate need of his services. The Portuguese boss clearly deemed him fit enough to start and was vindicated when Costa came through his 63-minute stint unscathed. Spearheading the champions’ attack – with Loic Remy shifted out to the right flank – Costa looked rusty on his return and couldn’t fashion a single attempt on goal.

Mourinho resisted the temptation to rest Eden Hazard for the Baggies encounter, maintaining the Belgian livewire’s 100% appearance record in the league. Hazard drew a blank for the second successive fixture following Chelsea’s title win, yet the London club’s home tie against Sunderland on the final day should convince owners to keep faith with the PFA Player of the Year.

Cesc Fabregas’ 30% ownership were left bemused when the deep-lying playmaker kicked the ball into a congregation of West Brom players – hitting Chris Brunt on the back of the head – during a break in play. Fabregas was awarded a red card for the bizarre incident and will now sit out the Black Cats tie in addition to the first two matches of next season. His absence could persuade owners to reinvest the funds from his sale and recruit one of Manchester City’s high-priced in-form midfielder (Yaya Toure and David Silva) ahead of their home clash against Southampton.

The Blues have now conceded four times and scored once since clinching the title and with Mourinho admitting his side have eased off since securing the trophy, some may even consider swapping out their Chelsea assets, with the Blues showing little motivation in last night’s lacklustre display.

Berahino nets brace in Baggies triumph

Having been recalled to the side in place of Victor Anichebe, Saido Berahino netted for the first time in eight starts, including a second-half spot-kick. Chris Brunt scored the hosts’ third of the night with a rasping near-post shot that Thibaut Courtois arguably should have dealt with better. The Northern Irish midfielder is enjoying a strong finish to the campaign, with one goal and four assists in six starts, and is clearly enjoying his move back into midfield, with Joleon Lescott fielded at left-back again.

The Baggies’ defence continues to impress under Tony Pulis’ governance, following their fourth clean sheet in five outings. Impressively, the midlands side have also kept out United, Liverpool and Palace over that period. Tony Pulis’ men face an uphill in their attempt to secure another shut-out on the final day when they travel to the Emirates. That being said, the fact that the Gunners failed to score in their past two home encounters offers some reason for optimism. On the flip side, Arsenal’s recent formidable defensive record at home (two goals conceded in five) does limit out interest in Berahino despite his upturn in form.

So assuming DeGea goes who should we be looking at to replace him (don't think Valdez is good enough keeper to win the title with)?

Valdes spend 10 years as number 1 at Barca, must have something

      but if not him Cech

Though the MEN saying that Lloris has a £20m release clause for a CL club

Barca basically attempted to sign any professional keeper to replace Valdes. Ended up signing two to make sure he wouldn't be needed even from the bench.

I would say Manu should do everything they can to sign Lloris, bar the unlikely scenario where Chelsea is willing to sell Cech to another English club.

but not worth it, he's not better than Valdes who is already there, we still have Lindegaard and will likely promote a youth teamer like Johnstone to the first team squad

Lloris, Cech, Valdes. All are good options tbh, it mostly comes down to value I'd say. Not sure I'd wanna pay £30m on Lloris for example.

    Morgan Cahill Azpi
    Hendo Silva Sanchez Ramsey
    Benteke Aguero Giroud

    Subs: B. Jones, PVA, King

1 FT and 2.2m in the bank. I was thinking of doing Hendo to Hazard and Cahill to a 4.0 defender but that seems like a lot of effort for a player that look to be on holidays now. If he goes wild against a probably safe Sunderland though it will be a worry. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys

    Best mids in these brackets

    a) any price (have Haz and Sanchez)
    b) up to 8.9
    c) Up to 7.5
    d) up to 6.6

Depending on who I replace Giroud with, this is how much I will have to replace Henderson with

Apparently Oyston's just done it out of spite for going AWOL. He's on a pay as you play based contract so it costs them pittance.

This way he'd have to buy out his contract to play for anyone else.

    IF Arsenal win tomorrow, GW38 has panic written all over it in terms of who will get rested. I hate playing that lottery, so I'm feeling punty and probably going with an 8pt hit;

    Sanchez to Hazard
    Cazorla to Bolasie or Yaya
    Giroud to Ulloa

Anyone else thinking of taking hits if Arsenal secure 3rd tomorrow?

    1. Tibbs
      • 14 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

Not a bad option, but its a lottery as you say. They could all feature or just one or two get rested but you dont know who. 8 pt hit seems a bit strong though. IF we wrap up 3rd place on Wednesday I would think imo that Gru may get a rest for Walcott.

Not really - it's punty not paniccy. All the panic on here is clear to see with people worrying about their ML's but I'm lucky I don't have to worry about that, so can take more risks to have FUN 😉

Probably Giroud to Benteke/Lukaku (I would take the "GW38 specialist", to be honest, and i probably will. Not only Benteke could get less minutes than usual, but also BUR conceded 10 in the last 12 games, and that playing CHE, LIV, SOU, EVE away, MCI, TOT, ARS at home. I still don't understand why people disregard them defensively. The only problem with them is that they've conceded too many headed attempts and Benteke loves those) or, if it's a punt (and if SUN loses tomorrow), Hazard to Yaya.

if bib theory can be applied I'd say Green is more likely to indicate those that are starting given Mert, Sanchez, Ozil, Coq are all in green

no, consistency whatsoever, unless Wenger is changing half his team... it doesnt tell us anything other than Koscielny not missing out training

Cramp can be a killer! If I get it in my calf as I wake up I can't walk for ages! It's mainly because I'm a wimp and hate stretching the leg completely because of the pain

This has to be one of my worst GW's in FPL history! My lowest so far is 38 points in GW19.

I have 28 points with Pantilimon, Koscielny, Rambo and Sanchez (C) left. I was 2,808 now I am down to 3,701.

Anyone else here having a "rough" gameweek?

Yeah, pretty rough. Think I'm on 34 now with Sanchez(C), Rambo & Giroud left.

The person chasing me had Gerrard(C) lol. 110 pts clear, all but over.
