For the final time this season, our pre-Gameweek members article, which focuses on the main captaincy contenders, arrives in time to guide the armband thinking. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the captaincy conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Sergio Aguero leads the way in this week’s Captain Poll, with over 35% of the votes cast. The City striker faces a Southampton side that’s picked up a single point in their last six away matches and has scored in each of his last three at the Etihad, including the 23-point haul against QPR in Gameweek 36. Manuel Pellegrini’s men are looking for a seventh straight win in front of their own supporters and have been in fine scoring form, netting at least twice in their previous six home matches.

Christian Benteke is next in line with almost 18% backing. The Belgian has racked up 11 goals, an assist and 15 bonus points in his last ten ahead of a home clash with Burnley, but with next weekend’s FA Cup final also to consider, there remains a slight fear that Benteke’s minutes could be managed come Sunday.

Alexis Sanchez sits just behind the Belgian in third spot ahead of Arsenal’s home encounter with West Brom. The Chilean’s form is a concern, however – he’s scored in just one of his last six, whilst Arsenal have failed to net in their previous three at the Emirates. Bearing in mind that the Baggies have four clean sheets in five, Sanchez will need to up his form considerably. Like Benteke, there’s also the possible threat of rotation ahead of the Wembley final to factor in.

Eden Hazard takes fourth place for Chelsea’s clash with Sunderland. There’s no doubt that his 6% of votes were accrued prior to the news that that he’s undergone emergency dental surgery – a factor that makes him a serious doubt for Sunday’s encounter. Although he’s scored just once in his last five, three of those matches have been away – Hazard has netted in three of his previous four at the Bridge and, if available, could emerge as an armband differential. The Black Cats defence will be no pushover, however, as they arrive in West London off the back of three successive shut-outs.

Further down our poll listing, Hazard’s team-mate, Diego Costa has emerged as another potential differential. Unlike the Belgian, he looks certain to start against Dick Advocat’s side, although, with Cesc Fabregas and perhaps Hazard missing, there are question marks about Costa’s likely ammunition, as well as his sharpness in front of goal following injury.

Romelu Lukaku is also amongst the chasing pack after producing two goals and an assist in his last three. Only just under 3% are willing to consider him for the armband, though visitors Spurs have been defensively dire on the road and managed just three clean sheets.

Looks like Arsenal's most dangerous player...when he comes on at 70 minutes.

Pulis with Stoke had a horrendous record away at top 4 teams. Of course this is now Pulis reborn, who could do anything.

Is there a helpful list anywhere of clubs with something to play for?

I know the relegation ones, and Man U can hope for an unlikely top 3 finish, but is there anyone else where a win could be worth a few places and (a few £m). Europa spots too?

Possibly should just work it out for myself from the league table...

1.2m for each position up the table is a great reason for most.

i had a look at last seasons final day earlier. there's no pattern really. i thought home teams would do better, but not really the way it worked out. no team went crazy scoring goals.

Very true. Not sure the message always make it out to the guys on the pitch though. You know we'll be here at 5pm tomorrow having seen a couple of teams phone it in.

To be honest I don't think that matters to the players at all.

"Something to play for" kind of depends where each squad is at psychologically in many cases.

Alright guys, 11 points behind my rival to win the leage. 1FT do i take a hit?

    *same players as rival

    Panti,
    Bellerin, Schlupp*, Iva*,
    Hazard*, Sanchez*, Coutinho*, Cambiasso.
    Vardy*, Giroud, Augero*.

    Main differentials
    He has: Sivla, Carzola, Kane,
I have: Larsson (inj), Cambiasso, Giroud

I realize not stellar by any means!

    1. SuperSaiyan
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 10 months ago

He is very safe so i imagine he will choose Aguero Captain.

It's only 11 points so maybe too risky to make double sub. Thinking either Silva or tekkers.

      A) Hazard -> Silva,
      B) Hazard -> Silva, Cambiasso -> Bolaise (-4)
      B) Vardy -> Bekteke and (c)
      C) Something else? Have enough money to swap Coutinho to Silva, or something else. Lukaku?

      Desperate need for some pointers.

      1. Old
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 10 months ago

Do not take in Silva, since he have him
Benteke would be good, but for Kane if affordable (since he have him)

Thanks man, guess i have to take gamble despite wanting Silva and go with differentials.

Would you take a hit and bring in Bolaise? Would mean he goes 11+4 points clear before GW starts.

        Coutinho to Mata(c)
        or
Giroud to Costa(c) and Coutinho to Walcott/Mata (Young/Mahrez/Bolasie if you can't afford)

            10 years, 10 months ago

Actually since Giroud is a differential, maybe you should keep him.

Lose Larsson and Coutinho for Walcott/Mata and Young/Bolasie.

Just Coutinho to Mata if you don't fancy the hit

Ok that's me set. Moreno and Hazard -> Kolarov and Silva. 11 home players:

    Schmeichel
    Terry, Kolarov, Schlupp
    Sanchez, Silva, Ramsey, Cambiasso
    Aguero(c), Giroud, Benteke(vc)

    Subs: Pantilimon, Henderson, McShane, PVA

Any other week that would be a great XI, but with the FA Cup Final looming there's a real risk the Arsenal contingent don't all play, with Benteke also at risk of limited game time. Anyway, not worth a points hit based on speculation so let's roll the dice.

Initially tempted by Young the most, questions about his fitness though?

Really good use of projection effects in the performance in time with the singer.

    9pt lead

Rival has tekkers as the main threat/differential.

    A - risk without tekkers
    B - giroud to tekkers
C - Defoe & haz to tekkers and bolasie

    Thanks in advance.

But he won't captain Gru, he may well captain Tekkers as a differential though. So I would definitely get benteke in.

Mucking around on paddypower and Sweden just went from 11/10 to 8/13!! Does that mean someone has had a massive punt?

Bookies shortened price to a truer value rather than getting smashed at 11/10

Who would you captain from these?

    G. Gomis (cpl) - Terrific form, 5 goals in the last 6, against weak defence, over 71% involvement in Swansea goals. If Swansea score, and given Palace's record they will, Gomis is likely to be involved.

    W. Walcott (WBA) - At home. Looked very threatening last match. Likely to start. FPL pedigree. Against Pulis though...

Gomis. An away game at Palace is as good as a home game in terms of scoring goals.

Lee Cattermole may not play and Sunderland will no doubt relax, so big pluses of Chelsea. Trouble is a Hazard and Cesc less Chelsea is a very different animal, something we hardly ever see. Cuardro (sp) and Willian will have to step it up and maybe Ivanovic will be let off his leash.
