FFS Cup

The Fantasy Football Scout Leagues and Cup Round-Up

For the final time, we assess the Scout leagues in a variety of Fantasy games after the campaign drew to a close at the weekend, with leagues in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Ultimate Fantasy Premier League and Sky Sports to look back on. In addition, we reveal the winner of the FFS Paddy Power Cup XI Final and find out who was the champion of champions in our Scout Picks Community Challenge.

FPL, Fantasy Football Scout League. Winner: Simon March, Overall Ranking 1

Simon March, known to many on FFScout as Dufflinks, won the Scout League and Members League and was also crowned world number one in the FPL game. Since claiming the number one spot in Gameweek 23 his sensible approach to transfers, which involved saving his wildcard until Gameweek 34 and taking no hits, was enough to see him over the finishing line. A goal from his captain Sergio Aguero, allied with a commanding lead going into the final Gameweek, proved pivotal and made up for the fact that his final transfer of the season (Seb Larsson to Yannick Bolasie) failed to pay off. Simon finished on 2,470 points, 21 ahead of his nearest rival.

Jon Sumner (aka Jinswick), rose from fourth to second in the final Gameweek of the season thanks to an audacious pair of transfers involving a hit. Out went Olivier Giroud and Eden Hazard and in came Theo Walcott as vice captain and Diego Costa as captain, with his new recruits scoring four goals between them. In the end, his final Gameweek net score of 69, which gave him a total of 2449, was just short but cemented a place in FFScout folklore for his bravery and a second place finish overall.

Kev Gleave dropped from second to third and finished with a respectable final Gameweek score of 46 points, thanks to a goal from Jamie Vardy and his captain Aguero. Hanging onto Eden Hazard, who claimed an assist and two bonus points, also helped secure a final points tally of 2439. He also matched his league placing in the overall rankings.

Mariusz Fyrstenberg retained the fourth spot after drafting in Walcott and Christian Benteke for a hit. With a net score of 52 Mariusz finished sixth in the overall rankings with a final points tally of 2427, also thanks to goals from Aguero, Harry Kane and Esteban Cambiasso.

In fifth was Stuart Shingler, who was another non-mover as the season came to a close. He finishes on 2406 points and an overall rank of 13. Santi Cazorla, Aguero, Vardy and Jeffrey Schlupp were his stars in Gameweek 38.

FPL,FFS Members League. Winner: Simon March, Overall Ranking 1

As mentioned above, world number one Simon March also won this season’s FFS Members league. In second is Jack Wain, who comments under the name Jawain. He finished on 2415 points and ninth in the overall rankings, while Stuart Shingler took third place in our Members league.

Ultimate Fantasy Premier League. Winner: Damian Lindall – Overall Ranking 3

Damian Lindall clung onto first place to win our UFPL league and finished third overall with a total of 2,847 points. This came despite his Gameweek 38 captaincy of Romelu Lukaku letting him down. In second is Milanista on 2837, while Sean Tobin climbed to third place and finished on 2782. Amongst the top ten was fifth placed Alex Bowers, who won the Beta version of the game last season and remains one to watch in our UFPL league next season.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football. Winner: Geoff Pryor  – Overall Ranking 1

After finishing fifth overall in last year’s Sun Dream Team, Geoff Pryor has done even better in the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game, taking first place in our league and the overall rankings. His score of 2432 points was 37 ahead of second placed Katie Burgin, while John Eaton, with a score of 2432 took third. Katie’s score was enough to clinch fourth spot in the overall rankings, while John finished in fifth. Geoff scoops the top prize in the game of £30,000.

Fantasy Football Scout Paddy Power Cup XI. Winner: Mark

Mark’s sensational end of season run, that saw him claim an overall rank of 42, also earned him victory in the final of the Fantasy Football Scout Paddy Power Cup XI. He defeated faux_C by seven points thanks to drafting in Ulloa and keeping the faith in Hazard’s ability to recover from dental surgery. Mark wins £125 worth of free bets with Paddy Power for winning the Cup and gaining the highest score of the round. He can also treat himself to a £100 Amazon voucher as winner. Faux-C picks up £50 of free bets and a £50 Amazon voucher. Meanwhile, Hutton Dressed as Lahm won the third place play off against Hammers XI 46-43 and wins £50 of free bets and a £25 Amazon voucher.

FFScout Community Scout Picks Champion of Champions: Kings of Lyon

Kings of Lyon has won a £100 Amazon voucher after gaining the highest Gameweek score of the season among our Community Champions, who are selected each week by the community to help compile our Scout Picks. His Gameweek 36 score of 77 proved unbeatable. In our Scout Picks Challenge, Jonty (that’s me) emerged with the highest total over the season with 2011, followed by Paul on 1946, Mark on 1933 and the community champion’s final overall total was 1893, after Andy85wsm’s Gameweek 38 tally of 41 points was added in.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Our official Champions League game this season is the Fantasy iTeam (FiT) offering – a free, reliable and easy-to-use Fantasy football app. With just the final remaining, Adriel Cheung leads the way on 852 points – 26 points ahead of Gavin Rolston, whilst Juan Garcia is close behind Gavin in third, on 825 points. There’s an iPad mini on offer to the winner – the league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 11155.

Anyone else didn't think Mad Max was all that great?

Was a good CGI-less (mostly) action flick, but definitely no where near the level many were hyping it up to.

The new one? Can't say I think I would like it to any real degree. Not a fan of all these rehashes, and for me, it looked pretty terrible in the previews.

This is how some chick on Rotten Tomatoes described the movie: "A visceral feminist anthem disguised as a post-apocalyptic car chase." - - Sorry, but I'm a little tired of the whole feminist, we are badasses concept that is overpowering everything else these days.

yea it gets abit tiring tbh. even on Britains Got Talent...Alesha takes every chance to throw in a feminine/"proud to be a woman" statements.

            Thats not feminist, its weakness.

Feminism is equality, so not being surprised everytime a women does something well. Shes undermining their achievements every single time.

Equality is good thing and a nice word. Feminisme ain't the same, it's more like masculinist (only the other way around.)

No its not. Thats the common misconception. Feminism isnt pro women, its pro equality. Which at the moment comes across as pro women because the world isnt fair gender wise.

It's a stupid word for it then. Call it equality and all sensable folks wants the same thing.

That's not true. Feminism is, by definition, the idea of establishing equality for women. Feminism is a wonderful and necessary concept.

it was good but it wasnt a movie you'd talk about after though - straightforward, simple characters, no character development, predictable plot.

What will be your defence strategy this year?

    A) Cheap as chips.
    B) Rotation based.
    C) Three defensively solid teams and two cheapies.
    D) A heavy hitter or two.
    E) 3x WBA players and two cheapies.
    F) Max out on attacking potential.

Last year I started with C, and I was going to do the same this year, but I think I'm going to go with A and max out my budget on the attacking players. Also tempted by E + F!

Maybe the defense wouldn't work so well then. It's like i was thinking the other day, how i would love a defensive manager at Newcastle, what an asset Janmaat would become! But then i thought - maybe those assists would dissapear too 🙂 You never know.

The bad thing about WBA defence is no one hogs the bonus, if gets any at all!

      Tempted by 1 Che/Ars defender, 2 x WBA, 1 x 4.5, 1 x 4.0 (if there's one)

Judging from some of Arsene's comments towards the end of the season, I think he will be looking for a more balanced, measured approach next season which could bode well for their defenders.

      1. The Sarjeant
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

I might just grab the cheapest WBA defender and then fill the rest with 4.5's/4.0's!

Only trouble doing that is the redistribution of funds to the defence is hard to do, unless you wildcard.

hahaha i do remember that. complete opposite meanings but i connected the dots 😀

Yea really depends on prices and fixtures, but I wouldn't be against doubling up on WBA from the start. Early on in this preseason, when Pulis was still at Palace, there were teams with Speroni + Mariappa/Ward.

Can see the same for Myhill + cheapest WBA at the start.

Doing well in defence doesn't really mean spending big though - it's looking for the right combination of players and/or being willing to spend early FTs on defenders.

At the start of the season, alot of focus is only spending FTs on the front 8 - but one lesson I learned this season is to be willing to spend an early FT on defenders.

Often, a defender you transfer in will be keep for a longer period and if a good switch is made, will save some headaches and reward you in the long run.

We'll all back out when we realize that Myhill costs 5.5m
... (or will it be Foster? His contract ends in June, but club have 2yr option on him)

and we can't fit our template midfielder lineup unless we downgrade to ubers

I agree that he was really poor in the latter half of the season, but with such a big name I feel that that FPL Towers are never going to make him too cheap. I hope that you're right though with your estimate - if he settles down and gets nailed on then he'll be a must-have.

Doesn't offer as much going forward as Kola, and still not great to defend. Mind you, the main reason City were very good for a finish is the converted midfielder with the huge ego; Kompany was missing.

let's be honest this isn't an investment you make in order to make money, pretty much the same as any football investment. It's about supporting a project. I wouldn't bank of getting any returns. Not saying it won't happen but don't count on anything.

An earlier post by Lawro suggests that 4 shares should be enough -

Does anyone know how many possible starting/sub order combinations you could make with 13 outfield players in FPL?

Thinking of trying to work out an ultimate dead team and trying to work out how much effort it would take.

    1. Ginkapo FPL

I went with the flair option when I looked at it last year. Take your random sample of 15 players, then get the formula to bench the weakest three where in an acceptable formation.

      So many options.

You need some way of taking the number crunching out

      1. Billy Gilmore
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, well I was going to use my dead team spreadsheet to do all the number crunching. Just thinking whether it would be possible to give it 15 names and get it to calculate the best starting and bench order combo. There must be a way of getting a macro to generate all the combos as separate teams...

At 9m it's pretty darn cheap. The best 8.5 combo is Myhill-Fabianski at 171 points. I think it would be hard to make up 20 points with that 0.5m.

Why did I start doing this??!?

Hard, but not impossible. This is a theoretical exercise, no conjecture here. (I happen to know the 0.5 cant be used better elsewhere as I did this last year)

Doing defender combos now. Do you know how I can cut out the 6 duplicates you get from having the same three defenders just in different orders?

                  a,b,c
                  a,c,b
                  b,a,c
                  b,c,a
                  c,a,b
                  c,b,a

Seeing as they all give the same result

I think it's done by (number of defenders, 159 is it?) choose 3 = 65,7359. This will give you the number of different combinations for defenders, with no duplicates. How you would compute these many combinations is yet another task.

Yeah, I've got the way of calculating their expected score, the problem is it doesn't know that when it gets to the a,c,b etc combo that it's already effectively been done before with a,b,c.

Your 657,359 combos is right for the number of starting combos, but when you include the number of first and second sub combos that number becomes frankly enormous (over 100 billion I think)

If it was only the 657,359 combos I could do it in Excel in no time at all (well probably a few hours of idly waiting for it to finish)

If you look at price you can discount certain players straight away for offering minimal points compared to a identical priced option.

Its an assumption but its reasonably safe. Cuts the player pool down somewhat.

I took the players, calculated their value and then used the top 50 players + the top 20 highest scorers if not included.

Yeah, that's probably a sensible assumption, although for subs it's not so much how many points they score, but when they score them.

That doesn't account for the different subs order though does it? I'm guessing that matters?

        I make it 13! / 10! = 1716

Minus the invalid 3 defender (66 perms) and 3 forward options (6 perms)

        = 1644 possible combinations.

Or have I gone completely screwy? It's probably 15 years since I looked at anything like this!

I think of subs order as just 3 different arrangements of (5 defs), (5 mids), (3 fwds), ... and 2 gk's has no impact since you don't get to choose (it's 2-factorial, or 2x1... so, just x2)

There are 2,760 possible FPL team sheets every GW with a static player pool of 11 + 4 bench (incl. keeper)

      Possible formations:
      gk + 5, 2, 3 = 2*1*10*1 = 20
      gk + 5, 3, 2 = 2*1*10*3 = 60
      gk + 5, 4, 1 = 2*1*5*3 = 30
... so, given a team of 15 FPL players, there are 110 possible starting XI's in a 5-defender formation
      gk + 4, 3, 3 = 2*5*10*1 = 100
      gk + 4, 4, 2 = 2*5*5*3 = 60
      gk + 4, 5, 1 = 2*5*1*3 = 30
... so, given the same team of 15 FPL players, there are 190 possible starting XI's in a 4-defender formation
      gk + 3, 5, 2 = 2*10*1*3 = 60
      gk + 3, 4, 3 = 2*10*5*1 =100
... and given the same team, again, of 15 FPL players, there are 160 possible starting XI's in a 3-defender formation
Whether you know it or not, your starting XI is actually just 1 of 460 possible teams at your disposal.
AND that doesn't account for your bench!
Since each formation leaves you 3 bench players, with 6 possible arrangements, multiply the total by 6.
There are 2,760 ways to arrange your team every GW.

      !!

If you forego a 2nd keeper, it's half that number... 1,380

One of those headlines sticks out this morning, and that’s the rumour in The Sun that Manchester City are leading the £85m race for Paul Pogba.

The paper claims City executives met with Pogba’s representatives last week and were told the Juventus man is available for a fee of around £45m plus a further £40m in wages.

think he will most likely end up at Barcelona.

He wants to go there, and they are planning to tie up a deal which sees him move to Barca in January (something to do with their transfer embargo this summer).

Graham Hunter (I think it was him) said recently on talkSPORT that Barcelona were in pole position, and the only other club he was currently considering (or is in the running) to sign him was Chelsea. But of course, things change. And with City's FFP problems solved, they could well enter the race for him.

Raheem Sterling is asking for £200,000-a-week 😯 😆

Man City are offering £250,000 a week in wages after a transfer fee of around £65m, so if Pogba signed a five-year contract it's a combined package of £130m. 😯

      so here's some other news:

Rafa Benitez will make Raheem Sterling his top target if he gets the Real Madrid job, according to the Daily Mirror.

Benitez is the favourite for the job at the Bernabeu, and the paper claims he could be set to pounce for the unsettled Liverpool man.

I thought lallana was exceptional at soton and thought United should have chased.
Either I was wrong about him or Liverpool is a graveyard for players, to add I thought what Ridgers did with Lambert was appalling.

Agree. Why take Rickie and not play/Facilitate him when the club was screaming for goals?
The dogs on the street knew his style maybe not pretty but effective but I like Ricky-There's an old fashioned quality of hard work and endeavour about lambert a real honest broker in my book.
Liverpool have been struggling for goals but yet they ignored him?
Don't get me wrong it's all too common now - teams buying players and not being able to 'facilitate' their style, it's an aspect I dislike in the modern game.

Name your over achievers team of the season:

Adrian: penalty saves value for money.
Clyne: always thought he was good but made Shaw and Chamberlain look average.
Terry: Every minute at 34 amazing.
Dan: Most reliable value for money Defender.
Bellerin: His pace is phenomenal and will be nailed next year.
Mccarthy: Everton would have been relegated without him.
Schneideriln: Arsenal could have won the league with him.
Bolasie: Through the ranks player who doesn't realise himself how good he is
Vardy: Workhorse of note and seems to cover more than one position
Austin: Scoring goals for QPR no matter what division he plays in.
    Manre: Find of the season

I'm interested in becoming a fully paid member for next season. I'd like to suggest/ask if the member exclusive tools could be sampled/trialed for a short while during the off-season so we can really see what we can use and may find useful. Is this at all possible mods?

there's a case for hoping that some of these type of players are actually slightly overpriced. Because if Ritchie for example is priced at 5.0m every man and his dog will have him, but price him at 5.5m and you might have something of a differential on your hands.

      1. Coldplay
        • 12 Years

That is true but it will be hard to get a 5th midfielder that is priced at 5.5. Especially, the way we expect the big guns to be highly priced. Could be interesting though.

Juventus are demanding at least 40m Euros (£28.4m) for Arsenal target Arturo Vidal, according to Tuttosport.

Arsene Wenger has admitted his admiration for the midfielder, but the Turin-based newspaper says Juve will only consider offers beyond that figure.

FAO Billy Gilmore, if you're still around I did some math on your "possible dead teams" question, above.

From a player list of 2gk/5def/5mid/3fwd (so, 14 players) and given FPL's rules (3 def or more, 1 fwd or more) there are:

    460 (possible starting XI's)
x 6 (possible bench configs for each)
    -----
    = 2,760 possible teams

    The math is above.
