For the second successive season, the ever-reliable Eden Hazard racked up 14 goals and ten assists as Chelsea clinched the title at a canter. The Belgian delivered attacking returns with metronomic regularity for Jose Mourinho’s men, never going more than two matches without producing points, whilst a change in the Bonus Points System boosted his appeal further.

The Statistics

Hazard kicked off the season in a steady yet unspectacular fashion, chalking up three goals and two assists in the first 10 Gameweeks. With new team-mate Cesc Fabregas delivering a goal and nine assists over the same period, there was a feeling that the Spaniard would provide real competition for our attentions, with Hazard dropping slightly in price from 10.0 to 9.9 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Hazard’s subsequent ten starts – which harvested five goals and three assists – soon had Fantasy managers scrambling for his services, though, as his cost rose to 10.7 by the time Gameweek 21 came around. A further six goals and five assists followed in the remaining 18 fixtures, engendering a peak value of 11.4 in Gameweek 35.

Among the full roster of Premier League midfielders, only Alexis Sanchez (12 goals) netted more than Hazard (14), while the Belgian’s ten assists positioned him joint-fourth in that regard. The former Lille starlet ended the season as one of only three players (the other two being Sergio Aguero and David Silva) to reach double figures in both goal and assists, emphasising his dual threat.

Hazard’s wealth of attacking returns granted him the highest total score (233) of any player, ahead of Aguero (215) and Sanchez (207). The winger’s most productive Fantasy season in a Blues strip was predicated on consistency of returns, rather than explosive bursts of form. To illustrate, the PFA Player of the Year contributed to more than a single strike on just two occasions – when he grabbed goal and an assist in Gameweeks 16 and 31 – and failed to score more than once in any of his 38 starts.

On the flip side, Hazard was a prime candidate for captaincy throughout the campaign due to his consistency. Drawing blanks in only 16 of his 38 appearances, he enjoyed a wealth of bonus points (42) – 10 more than next-best Harry Kane. This, in turn, gave him a points per game average (ppg) of 6.1, which was second only to Aguero’s 6.5.

The Prospects

Casting an eye over Hazard’s progression since making the switch to Stamford Bridge three years ago illuminates the consistency of his output – he contributed to 24 goals in the past two seasons and 25 in the one before that. The afore-mentioned changes to the BPS merely heighten Hazard’s appeal for the campaign ahead and there’d be no surprise to see him move to 11.0 or 11.5 when the Player Price List is rolled out in July.

Given his reliability of both starts and Fantasy returns – in addition to spot-kick duties – it will be difficult to look beyond the Belgian. Certainly, Fabregas and Oscar will offer cheaper options in the Blues midfield but, as evidenced last term, Hazard more than justifies the extra outlay – he ultimately finished 68 points ahead of the Spaniard.

Up front for the Blues, Diego Costa’s average of 5.8 ppg is almost on a par with the winger’s, though with Aguero likely to be the prime Fantasy choice amongst the premium forwards, it remains to be seen whether many will look to Costa as a route into Mourinho’s attack. Having missed 12 fixtures through injury or suspension, the Spain international is a far less reliable candidate than the Belgian, and with the likes of Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry offering secure options in defence, Costa – in spite of his 20 goal-haul – faces a tough task to usurp Hazard as the chief route into Chelsea’s attack.

Generally FPL are quite generous in their classification. For example telegraph and sky classed Sanchez as a forward in their games

There's hot topics for good debates. I really do not like forums though. On this site, everyone knows where to post and where everyone's going to be. With forums, there's loads of different sections and you don't know where the crowd is.

This site works perfectly fine and one reason why I love it so much. If it's a forum people want, there is other sites out there.

I think the way this site works is one of the main reasons it is so popular. Do think there needs to be a way to incorporate the hot-topics into the most recent comments pages, so that you can get the best of both formats on the same page.

      1. The Sarjeant
        • 12 Years

There could be a 'Super Hot Topic' section for things that are called 'Hot Topics' now and another section for recent hot topics which are the main talking points on the past few pages.

This would make more people go back and keep conversations going on on previous pages and reduce some of the traffic on the current postings, making everything last longer.

        1. Billy Gilmore
          • 14 Years

I think there should be a second section of comments on whatever page you're on where you can choose a certain number of hot topics that will be displayed there. If it doesn't interest you then you can turn it off, but if you are then you can merrily follow the most recent comments while also continuing older conversations without having to check back there on a different page. Although I suppose those hot-topics could get so big there might be server issues...

Disagree, think this format inhibits thorough discussion and debate. Just as a conversation gets started, a new page starts and you lose 95% of people to another slew of RMTs and trash comments about other posters rather than the actual football. This means we normally get surface level discussion and creates repetition of the major topics of the week. The creation of hot topics and user submitted articles has gone a small way to solving it but not nearly enough imo.

For me personally, I'd love to be able to submit a comment or discussion topic and be able to come back to it an hour or 6 hours or even a day later to then read replies and respond to them. As it is, I feel like posting is largely pointless as it just disappears after 2 minutes anyway.

I'd like to hear the reasons behind people's support for the current system though?

Berb, any views on what's going to happen with this review? All the so called ITKs are contradicting each other.
If he does go I bloody hope some behind-the-scenes work has been done to try and get Klopp.
No point sacking him if there isn't a top class replacement.

Last week the headlines were "Rodgers is safe" and he said he's "150%" sure he won't be sacked. Today Northcroft (reliable) has said Liverpool are looking at other candidates prior to the review and Klopp is one of them.

I don't see BR lasting this review, he'd have to produce a very perfect-like argument to convince Michael Gordon (FSG representative) that he's the man for the job.

I think if Klopp gives positive signals, BR is as good as gone this week. Even if Klopp says no, there's still 2/3 more replacements FSG are looking at.

We'll know soon I guess. Personally think he's getting axed and Northcroft + Oliver Kay's stories today insinuate FSG got a replacement or 2.

Hopefully. His freezing out of players is baffling. Playing them OOP. Flip-flopping over tactics. The small hand claps and one armed celebrations.

He seems to always favour British players to me..

His handling and mismanagement of Balotelli, Markovic and Sakho is almost worrying. Sakho in particular, who is clearly the best CB at the club.

The players OOP is a good point: Sterling RWB, Can RB, Johnson LB, Gerrard DM, Lallana false 9, Markovic LWB.

Rodgers is a good man but his ego is getting the better of him. He is best suited to a Swansea/Newcastle/West Ham type team.

True. There's a ton of potential in the likes of Markovic, Sakho, Coutinho, Can and Sterling. I'd easily imagine them play that fast paced football of Klopp's. Couple of experienced top level signings, and we're talking. Gundogan, maybe? And someone upfront who can combine skills with fitness.

I'd sell Sterling and spend 40m or whatever the figure will be, on a striker + defensive mid

Swansea City are again tracking FC Twente forward Luc Castaignos, according to reports in Holland.

Swansea boss Garry Monk was interested in the 22-year-old - whose playing style has seen him compared with Thierry Henry - last summer and went as far as tabling an offer for his services.

In 112 appearances since returning to his homeland, he has netted 42 goals.

He's a forward, so he'd take game time away from Gomie, not Sigurdsson.

    Bit random, but here goes.

If your GK is sent off and you have no subs then you have to play an outfield player in goal. But are you allowed to change the outfield player in goal for another outfield player?

I would say yes, because of the laws of the game state you must have a GK, therefore if the outfield player GK gives up the position (useless in goal, tactical etc.) then it must be filled by another outfield player.

Soccernomics I've heard is similar to The Numbers Game. Haven't read any of them, but came across them whilst reading stuff about Football Manager.

Reading fiction nowadays. Doesn't have to be fiction. Was looking at reading The Song of Ice and Fire, but the series is too darn long.

          Lengthy, but worth it!

I started out watching the show at the very start and loved every minute, but I have only read the first book though.

Could you guys suggest a team to start a career season mode in FIFA 15? Not necessarily from Premiership.

Soton, Wolfsburg, Roma and Sevilla come to my mind first. Any other suggestions maybe..?

Not sure on FIFA, but I'm tempted by a Lazio save on FM. Why not try something out with a fallen giant club? Like Stade de Reims? Or Forest? Or Hamburg?

The discussion on the last page about the site turning into a sort of hybrid forum, is this actually true? The only person I've seen mention it is Numb and he likes to WUM. Apparently it came up on a Scoutcast recently, anyone remember this?

I find it strange that I've only seen one poster mention it when it would be a major change. Didn't hear it on the Scoutcast myself though I tend to fall asleep while listening.

Basically, there's plans to give access to an archive of Hot Topics via a new page. Any discussion made a Hot Topic will appear here and we'll be making more Hot Topics daily and maybe even giving out more rights to trusted users to create them.

Adding to discussions in Hot Topics is the same as discussing within articles, except you don't have to scan articles to go back to the discussion, you can just view all the current discussions via this new page. The discussions are mirrored within articles so you can access them and interact with them in two places.

It's not a straight up forum as folk won't be able to liberally post new Threads (hot topics). Threads are generated when a Hot Topics is fired up and limited numbers of users will be able to create these themselves.

However, you can image that we'll have a RMT Hot Topic every day, a team news Hot Topic on Fridays etc and folk can have better access to these.

Sounds like a great idea to me. Thanks for explaining it. The team news hot topic sounds like a great one-stop shop for that sort of thing especially. Ideal.
