CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2014/15 – FANTASY ITEAM MATCHDAY 13 PICKS

We’re counting down the hours until this season’s Champions League final gets underway. As always, we assess the Fantasy iTeam (FiT) Player Price List and offer two players per team for your perusal ahead of this evening’s deadline.

A free Fantasy football app, FiT is available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android. Fantasy managers have until 10 minutes before the first kick-off in any given Matchday to make any final alterations to their starting XIs – this evening, then, that deadline is 7.35pm, as Barcelona and Juventus square up in Berlin.

We’ve supported FiT throughout the competition and have an official Fantasy Football Scout League, with an iPad mini available to the winner. There’s also a VIP European Match Day Experience for two on offer for the overall winner of the Fantasy iTeam Champions League game.

Barcelona

Lionel Messi’s superhuman efforts of late have somewhat overshadowed Neymar’s own superb run of form. The Brazilian prodigy tallied ten goals and two assists in his last ten starts, which is just two strikes and an assist shy of Messi’s haul over the same period.

With Messi an automatic pick for the majority of Fantasy managers, those undecided on Neymar and Luis Suarez as a double-up option should consider that the latter missed Barcelona’s last two league ties with a hamstring knock – although he did make a swift recovery to clock 78 minutes in the Copa del Rey final.

Neymar (11.5) has been irrepressible in the Champions League knockout stages, notching six goals in his previous four starts. Moreover, the former Santos starlet ranked second only to James Rodriquez (six) in term of key passes (five) during the semi-finals, highlighting the strong creative edge to his game.

Dani Alves (7.1) has been one of Barca’s chief facilitators in recent matches, serving up six assists in the Catalan club’s last eight fixtures in all competitions. The Brazilian played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey final, laying on two assists for his team-mates.

Alves’ relentless raids down the right flank have also reaped rewards on the European stage, considering he was the only defender to register an assist in the semi-finals. Although he hasn’t netted recently, Alves did attempt the most shots (four) of any Barcelona player outside the afore-mentioned attacking trio over his side’s last four league ties, illustrating his eye for goal.

Juventus

Carlos Tevez (10.3) was rested for three of Juventus’ final four Serie A clashes, before lasting the full 90 minutes against Verona on the last day of the season. As such, the ex-Manchester United marksman should be in prime condition when he lines up against Luis Enrique’s men.

Tevez boasts solid form, having tallied three goals in six starts in all competitions, including the winner in the first leg of the Old Lady’s semi-final against Real Madrid. Indeed, during the semi-final stages, the Argentine led the way for shots (five) and efforts inside the box (three) for Juventus and was placed second in terms of key passes (five) among all players.

Furthermore, Tevez could well be encouraged by the fact that Barcelona conceded three goals in their last Champions League match-up and failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous trio of European road ties.

Whilst the likes of Andrea Pirlo and Paul Pogba offer alternatives in the centre of the park, we’re opting for an in-form differential as our second for the Serie A winners. If you’re looking for a cut-price option to help balance the books, Roberto Pereyra fits the bill perfectly. On loan from Udinese, the Argentina international (priced at a mere 4.6) has enjoyed success in the “number ten” role of late, netting in his side’s last two fixtures.

Admittedly, Pereyra has been restricted to substitute duties in Juventus’ recent Champions League ties, yet his late-season flourish could tempt Massimiliano Allegri to hand him an increased role in Berlin. Indeed, bearing in mind that no player has featured in more Serie A fixtures for Juve in the campaign gone by, Pereyra looks set for a role off the bench at the very worst as the Italians look to upset the odds and emerge triumphant.

FANTASY FOOTBALL SCOUT LEAGUE

With just today’s final remaining, Adriel Cheung leads our FiT League on 852 points – 26 points ahead of Gavin Rolston, whilst Juan Garcia is close behind Gavin in third, on 825 points. The league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 11155.

    Manager Impact: Team Analysis

Last season saw several mid-season managerial changes to Premier League teams as clubs attempted to avoid the drop. Of six teams to make changes to their head coach, five avoided relegation, with QPR the unlucky suitors to be destined a place in the Championship next year.

Here we take look at the statistical impact the new managers had, both offensively and defensively, as the 2015/16 season nears. This may give insight into the style we can expect to see from certain teams over next season. Beside the team names are the position of when their original manager was sacked, and their final position at the end of the season.

Below are the five teams that installed new managers and avoided relegation. By looking at the basic offensive and defensive stats, we can see how the change affected the team and this may give us an idea of how certain managers are likely to play. Obviously, certain styles might have been adopted in order to avoid relegation, but nonetheless it shows what the squad is capable of.

Goals Conceded: 23 Average Goals Conceded per Game: 1.76
Clean Sheets: 3 Games to Clean sheet ratio: 4.3

So what can we infer from all these numbers and figures?

    1) Crystal Palace – It seems with Palace, Pardew is a lot more patient in waiting for a chance, choosing to have his team shoot a lot less more than when he was at Newcastle. Defensively Crystal Palace have been the most improved in terms of goals conceded per game, despite having a poor clean sheet potential. Certainly a team to watch for next season if they can cut out those few goals conceded.

    2) West Brom – As expected, West Brom became a solid option to have in defence as the club saw Tony Pulis take over. The Baggies had the best game to clean sheet ratio of the teams that made managerial changes. Their finishing improved greatly with only two goals less than predecessor Alan Irvine, with nearly half as many shots needed. Definitely worth considering for defensive assets next season.

    3) Newcastle – With the departure of Alan Pardew, Newcastle managed to narrowly avoid the drop under John Carver. With almost identical shooting stats, it was the defence that suffered most as a string of disappointing results ensued. If Carver is set to stay, I find it very hard to see any value in Newcastle players unless things change quickly.

    4) Sunderland – Gus Poyet’s luck finally ran out in March when he was sacked by the club. The Black Cats were quite wasteful in front of goal, and even with the introduction of Defoe in January, this seemed to persist. Taking his place, was Dick Advocaat who managed to keep Sunderland up with very defensive displays., despite poor attacking performances. Narrowly behind Pardew and ahead of Pulis for average goals conceded, one thing is for certain: Dick likes it tight. Depending on the pricing, we may see more investment in the likes of Pantillimon and Van Aanholt.

    5) Aston Villa – Lastly, Tim Sherwood’s arrival was greeted with mixed reception. As he kept Villa up with some great end-of-season performances from Benteke, we look towards next season with an air of excitement at the possible forward threat available. As the most attacking manager of the five, getting goals is where Sherwood’s squad draws its strength, but definitely not in defence. Worth keeping an eye on the forward situation at Villa until then.

For a future article, I might examine managers that favour a highly offensive/ defensive style and look at the areas that their game focuses on heavily. By looking at whether teams focus on wing-play, through the middle, set-pieces or overlap from defenders, it could highlight a few players that may be worth tracking for next season.

I ended up going from 1st in the last 3rd of the season (with around a 100 point gap) to 6th in my mini league, went from something like £200 in winnings to just £7.50 😀

Carlos Tevez walks into a supermarket and buys:
      1 bar of soap
      1 toothbrush
      1 tube toothpaste
1 loaf of bread 1 pint of milk
      1 single serving cereal
      1 single serving frozen dinner
The girl at the checkout looks at him and says "Single are you?"
Tevez replies very sarcastically "How did you guess?"
She replies "because you're fooking ugly."

No worries.... Know u don't mean it but there are a lot of people that would not be so understanding.

In English it's completely unacceptable, know it isn't your first language

        *Last year

In his 2nd to last year he did make a mistake or two admittedly, but generally he was solid and was an absolute attacking weapon from the wing - in addition to scoring a few important headers for us in the league.

Nah, he was let down by those around him. Watched every single game and he was blamed regardless of situation for 75% of goals conceded. It just became the standard lazy pundit response

I watched plenty of games, and there were plenty of examples of poor defending. Nowhere near his best at the end of his Man U career, imo. 🙂

      Really pleased for him.

I wanted us to get Luke Shaw so badly that when I heard Evra might stay and impact the transfer (because of uncertainty around game time), I was actually hoping he'd leave to another club that he'd be happy at.

I think his goal against Bayern is one I'll always remember, just like Scholes v Barca.

Yep, was very disappointed to see him go but deserves first team football.
Moyes gets the blame for leaving the experienced Rio and Vida go (both who look and looked finished) yet LVG let Evra go and never gets called on it

What makes it worse is that we never utilised them properly. Particularly Mascherano.
