Having announced the news of Sam Allardyce’s departure just minutes after their defeat to Newcastle United on the final day of the season, West Ham filled their managerial void by appointing former player Slaven Bilic on a three-year contract last week.

Notwithstanding a breathless start to the 2014/15 campaign, the Hammers went into free fall at the turn of year, ensuring that the charismatic Croatian will arrive to a litany of issues. Speaking on his installment as the new Irons boss, Bilic assured fans he would do everything in his power to renew their optimism and push on for a top-half finish.

“I remember West Ham as a special club. My first priority when choosing a club is to look at its ambitions. When I spoke to the chairmen and Karren Brady, they made clear that it is not only the fantastic new stadium we are moving into, but they showed their determination and ambition to make what is a big club even bigger. I saw their determination and passion that they want to do that. That was the number one reason. I could feel that they really wanted me so it was an easy choice. I would say to the West Ham fans that I will give my best and together we will achieve great things.”

The History

Bilic agreed to manage his hometown club Hajduk Split on a temporary basis back in 2001, following his retirement from football the previous season. After the Croatian First League outfit sourced a new head coach, Bilic set about co-managing the Croatian U21 team (alongside Aljosa Asanovic), guiding them to the group stages of the U21 Euros qualification rounds.

The former centre-half earned his big break when taking over from Zlatko Kranjcar as the senior national team’s boss in 2006. From an English perspective, Bilic’s most pertinent period in charge of the Blazers arrived in the Euro 2008 qualifiers, when he led Croatia to a 3-2 victory over the Three Lions, thus consigning Steve Mclaren’s men to an inglorious exit during the group stages. Bilic eventually ended his stint with Croatia on good terms, boasting a 64.6% win record (42 wins in 65 matches).

Bilic’s next foray into management wasn’t such a success. The ex-Everton defender spent one year at Lokomotiv Moscow in 2012/13, commandeering the Russian club to their worst finish (ninth place) since the inception of the league. He was relieved of his duties that summer, having carded an underwhelming 38.71% win record (12 wins in 31 matches).

After that, Bilic signed a three-year contract with Turkish Super Lig outfit Besiktas just 10 days after his dismissal. During his tenure, Besiktas secured successive third-place finishes and progressed to the Europa League Round of 16 last season, triumphing over Tottenham and Liverpool in the process. Amid speculation that West Ham were poised to snap him up, Bilic resigned at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, ending his reign with a 52.17% win record (48 wins in 92 matches).

The Previous Regime

Following their relegation from the Premier League, Allardyce signed a two-year deal with West Ham on June 1 2011. Renowned for developing hard-nosed sides with a penchant for tough tackling and a long ball style of play, he was always an awkward fit for a Hammers faithful raised on the silky champagne football from the likes of Trevor Brooking and Alan Devonshire. Inevitably, his direct style of football prompted murmurings of discontent but they were quickly calmed as Allardyce steered the Irons to promotion via the play-offs.

Two solid seasons in the top flight of English football followed – harvesting mid-table finishes – before the dawn of the 2014/15 campaign beckoned in a shift in Allardyce’s philosophy. The appointment of Teddy Sheringham as attacking coach aided West Ham’s transition into a side that took the game to opponents in search of goals, abandoning Allardyce’s emphasis on prioritising clean sheets. With target man Andy Carroll ruled out of the first 11 league matches by virtue of a knee ligament injury, the Hammers boss structured their game around the pace and power of Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia, with Stewart Downing initially excelling at the tip of a midfield diamond.

Buoyed by the form of their new recruits, West Ham stormed out of the blocks and rose to fourth place by Gameweek 17, with Allardyce even earning the Manager of the Month award for November. Events took a sharp turn for the worse in the second half of the season, however, as they recorded a pitiful three wins in their second batch of 19 fixtures. West Ham’s new cavalier style was abandoned as Allardyce’s side limped over the finish line, signalling the end of his tenure in charge.

The Season Ahead

From a tactical standpoint, Bilic primarily employed a 4-2-3-1 set-up during his spell with Beskitas but also adopted a 4-4-2 formation on occasion. That being said, the law graduate counsels fluidity over regimented banks of four and believes that traditional formations are “dying out”.

In an interview with BBC Sport, FourFourTwo Turkey’s Ahmet Yavuz shed some light on how the newly-installed Hammers boss is likely to organize his troops:

“In one of his first interviews in Turkey, Bilic said ‘my team is as energetic as Iron Maiden.’ He really delivered in that regard. With a 4-2-3-1 formation, he built a team with two dynamic defensive midfielders, one creative playmaker and wingers able to cut inside. Last season especially, Demba Ba showed that he was the missing piece of that formation with his ability to encourage midfielders to attack. In two years Besiktas transformed to an energetic, collective and fast team, playing with short passes.”

In his first interview after securing the Boleyn Ground hot seat, Bilic offered insight into the principles that underpin his playing philosophy. Of most interest, the ex-Croatia international stressed the importance of attacking in numbers and playing “good†football. Despite conceding that being compact against the stronger teams is paramount, it’s clear that Bilic espouses a front-foot-forward philosophy:

“To be successful you have to be good enough in every aspect of the team, you have to defend with numbers, you have to be very compact, very organised but also you have to attack with numbers and be good on the ball. The teams that I’ve managed so far, whether that be Croatia, Lokomotiv Moscow, Besiktas or Hadjuk Split, they were all teams with very high aims. To qualify, to top group with Croatia, to win the league with Split and Besiktas, with Lokomotiv top three, top five, so my style had to be dominant. With Besiktas, in 90 per cent of our games we had more possession, you are the better side, you are the one that is attacking and the opponent is on the counter. But in the games where we had to be compact like against Arsenal, we weren’t dominant. So you have to be both. But I like my team to play football, to play good football.”

Bilic’s first port of call will be to rejuvenate West Ham’s attack, in light of the fact they tallied just nine goals from Gameweek 23 onwards. Although he was sidelined for the final six fixtures of the season, Sakho wasn’t in the best form prior to succumbing to a thigh injury, having notched just one goal in six starts. Considering the similarly pacey and powerful Demba Ba enjoyed the best season of his career (27 goals in 44 outings) under Bilic’s stewardship, there’s hope that Sakho will benefit from his arrival.

The aforementioned Valencia (one goal from Gameweek 11) and Downing (one goal and assist from Gameweek 23) also have to shoulder some of the blame West Ham’s decline: their respective seasons plummeted after strong starts. Downing’s prospects next term will largely depend on how Bilic elects to set-up, with a 4-4-2 formation – featuring Carroll and Sakho as a strike partnership – likely restricting Downing to a less-profitable role on the flanks. The former Aston Villa man could well flourish if fielded in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 system, though there’s a chance he could be utilised as an inverted winger on the right.

Besides improving the fortunes of West Ham’s underperforming contingent, Bilic will also be keen to further the development of their emerging stars. Aaron Cresswell was a revelation for the Irons last term, chalking up two goals and four assists from his left-back berth and Bilic’s 4-2-3-1 formation – which employs inverted wingers and relies on the full-backs to supply the width – would certainly be conducive to further attacking returns for the young English defender.

In the meantime, Bilic has wasted little time in splashing the cash on Sampdoria enforcer Pedro Obiang in the centre of the park, whilst further reports suggest the new manager will receive significant backing in the transfer market, with Loic Remy linked with a move after a peripheral season for champions Chelsea.

Crucially, Fantasy managers should have plenty of opportunities to assess the Hammers prior to the domestic campaign. As reward for topping the Premier League Fair Play table last season, West Ham earned a spot in the Europa League qualification stages, which commence on July 2. To gain entry into the group stages, the Hammers have to win three two-legged qualifying matches and a two-legged play-off. Ally this with five other pre-season friendlies and we should have a fair idea of Bilic’s intentions ahead of the new campaign.

I've gone with Busk and Butland also.

Knoche is the best German defender and is 6m as you now have an open slot for germans. Korb is highly thought of though in Germany and is only 4.5 and it has been said that Can will play in midield so if that is true Korb should be nailed. But don't take my word on this

They are. Germany and Denmark both play on day 1. Busk is a no-brainer so to partner him you need the keeper from England, Italy, Portugal or Sweden.

Also, my humble reading of the situation is that Germany defence is little over-rated and over-priced. Punt on Korb (4.5) or avoid IMO.

I have a cheeky 0.5 spare too, feels good!

Couldn't decide if Koubek was definitely nailed on so plumped for Busk, I like the Vestegaard pick but couldn't stretch to that with my other luxuries.

Not dissimilar otherwise. What swayed you to Berardi over Belotti?

Nearly, but if this Romagnoli lead turns out (see above) I will probably tinker.

          Busk, Butland
          Zappacosta, Korb, Garbutt, Guerreiro, Petkovic
          Silva, Højbjerg, Viviani, Leitner, Houska

I was tempted to start with Fischer and switch GW2 - think that's a nice tactic.

Don't fancy Bardi & an England defender instead of Butland & Zappacosta? Has some tactical ramifications when it comes to manual subs but it saves money 🙂

Could do. My main reason for having Butland is rotation: MD2 he has Sweden when Busk has Germany.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Can Bilic ensure West Ham have lots of viable Fantasy options?

Or will Europa League and possible price hikes for key players like Adrian, Downing and Cresswell make them a team to avoid in our Fantasy selections.

My recollection of Newcastle in the Intertoto was that we started the league season very strongly having had some competitive games under out belt. Last time out in the Europa was different on account of us being bloody dreadful, but the principle stands - if West Ham turn out some decent performances pre-GW1 I may indulge.

Adrian 5.5, Downing 7.5, Cresswell 5.5 and Sakho 6.5-7 imo.

I think Sakho and/or some of their cheaper defenders like Tomkins could be very interesting options.

Too early to tell without seeing his formation and preferred players, but yes I think one or two will provide value as they tend to every season.

I'm keeping an eye on Sakho, Tomkins and Kouyate.

As a recent article suggested 😉 if we have a good EL qualifying campaign then we could perform well for the first 4-6 weeks.

Aston Villa and Leicester "Janus" Appraisal

This draft is posted here for feedback, especially from those that know the clubs well. All comments will be taken into account in the final revision. And as usual, if you don't want to read a long post please skip over. 🙂

The last two articles in this series will cover four teams that left it late in the season to secure Premier League (PL) survival. In this one we'll take a look at the remaining pair from the Midlands - Leicester City and Aston Villa.

    LEICESTER CITY

Bottom of the table in early April, Leicester produced an amazing run of 7 wins in their last 9 games to secure survival on an eventual 41 points. Previously they had won 4 games in 29 attempts so the turn-around was startling. Why did this happen? Well, one feature was that Leicester had a run of 'easier' fixtures - of the last 9 games, 6 were at home and only one opponent was a top 7 team (the only game they lost). But they also changed their pattern of play to become more offensive, from the 5-4-1 they had often used earlier in the season to an attacking 3-4-3.

This approach resulted in 17 goals in those 9 games compared to 29 goals in the previous 29 games. In other words the goals per game almost doubled. But at the same time they kept 5 clean sheets in the last 9 games having previously only managed 5 all season. So the defending seemed to improve too.

Some elements of the change in form can be related to players. Marc Albrighton - a bit part player for most of the season - came into the team, played all the last 9 games and turned in some high class performances. Jamie Vardy was also brought into the starting XI having been used mainly as a sub for a while and delivered 4 goals and 4 assists, good enough form for an England call-up. Kasper Schmeichel returned from a long injury lay-off to produce form that has seen him linked with a move to a bigger club. Robert Huth (who Leicester are reportedly trying to sign permanently) added defensive robustness and know-how. Leonardo Ulloa re-discovered his scoring boots after a long, barren run. And Esteban Cambiasso was highly influential in terms of class and experience in midfield.

Predicting how Leicester will fare in 2015/16 is very difficult. The positive is that their late run will have given confidence to a group of players unused to playing at top level - they now know they are good enough to win games in the PL. The negative is that a number of them - Schmeichel, Cambiasso, Vardy, Jeffrey Schlupp, Riyad Mahrez - have been linked with moves and it is uncertain how many of those Leicester will be able to keep. In addition there will certainly be additions - Austrian defender Christian Fuchs from Schalke having already signed.

So it could be a quite different squad that Nigel Pearson starts the new season with whilst Leicester try to cope with the "second season syndrome" which has seen 5 clubs in the last 10 years relegated in their 2nd PL season after promotion.

    THE PLAYERS

Probably the key questions regarding Leicester players will revolve around price. Will FPL (and other fantasy games) base their valuations on the whole season or on the last quarter of it? If the former we could expect plenty of defensive options at the 4.5m level, probably including GK Schmeichel. Only captain Wes Morgan, wingback Schlupp and new arrival Fuchs would look at risk of a 5.0m price tag. But if the latter, 5.0m could be the norm for Leicester's 1st team defenders, at which level they would look less attractive. Of the more likely 4.5m options, Huth seems like a good choice if he signs for the club as he'd appear to be a nailed on starter and has good stats for attacking threat from set pieces. Wingback Albrighton could also be a great pick if re-categorised as a defender.

In midfield it is hard to see any players likely to break the 5.0m threshold and at that level such players as Cambiasso and especially Mahrez will have support. But Leicester could also be a fruitful place to find starting midfielders priced at 4.5m - Albrighton would look likely to be one and if he continues next season the way he finished the last he could be an ideal '5th midfielder' option.

In attack, Vardy and Ulloa would certainly look to be due price rises, perhaps to around 6.0m or so. And there is also record signing Andrej Kramaric - a one-time Chelsea target - to consider. He was a prolific goalscorer in Croatia but didn't fire at Leicester after his January move. Perhaps next season will be when we see how good he is. In the meantime there would seem to be better striker options than the Leicester ones for FPL purposes in the predicted price range, though Jamie Vardy would look like the best of them for those that believe Leicester will continue where they left off.

    ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa's recovery followed the arrival of new manager Tim Sherwood. Commended for his turn-around of the form of Manu Adebayor during his spell at Spurs, Sherwood worked the same magic trick with Christian Benteke who scored 11 of his 13 PL goals in Villa's last 11 games. Sherwood's ability to get the best from attacking players in particular also saw improved form from Tom Cleverley (now at Everton) and Fabian Delph.

Sherwood has a reputation as an attacking coach and certainly the defensive side of Villa's game saw no improvement after his arrival with 3 clean sheets and 23 goals conceded in 13 PL games. So the question for 2015/16 will probably be whether they can score enough goals to keep clear of trouble, much of which may hinge on whether they are able to retain Benteke, who has been linked with Liverpool among others. In any case, for FPL and fantasy managers it will probably be in the midfield and upfront that the search for options will mainly be focused.

    THE PLAYERS

Looking in the Villa defence for fantasy prospects is awkward. Villa kept 10 clean sheets during the season but most of them were achieved under Paul Lambert's more cautious approach. Shay Given supplanted Brad Guzan in goal towards the end of season and at this stage it is not clear which of them will be Sherwood's 1st choice next season.

The right back role could go to Alan Hutton, Leandro Bacuna (classed in FPL as a midfielder) or potential arrival Micah Richards. Centre back options include Ron Vlaar (who has also been linked with a move away), Jores Okore and Ciaran Clark. Left back could be Aly Cisshoko or Kieran Richardson (also classified as a midfielder). In other words the back four is not settled and fantasy managers may well prefer a wait and see approach here.

In the midfield, the main options right now would look to be Delph, Charles N'Zogbia, Jack Grealish and new addition Scott Sinclair. Of these, Grealish had the best creative stats by quite a distance and looks like a young player on the up after starting Villa's last 8 games of the season. Unlikely to be priced above 4.5m, he could be a very useful 5th midfielder option. Scott Sinclair is another worth considering - he had the best stats for shots in the box amongst the Villa midfielders and last time he played regularly for a full season he racked up 8 goals and 5 assists on his way to 151 FPL points (2011/12 at Swansea). If he establishes himself as a regular under Sherwood he could be a very live option at a probable 5.0m.

In attack, Benteke is the main story. It would seem unlikely that he'll be priced above this season's 8.0m based on the season as a whole and he'd certainly have supporters at that level given his late season form. Gabby Agbonlahor does not appear to be a nailed-on starter and it is 6 years since he managed double figures for goals in a PL season, a fact that is likely to be reflected in a price not above 5.0m. Andreas Weimann was not favoured by Sherwood. It seems quite likely that Villa will bring in additional firepower even if Big Ben stays with Jamie Vardy being one that has been linked.

Great article as always, but I'm afraid I think you're way off with prices. Zero chance of Grealish being £4.5 (closer to £6.0), Albrighton will also increase, and Benteke's price WILL increase to £8.5/£9.0.

      1. Ruth_NZ

Maybe you are right, it's all surmise. But if you look at FPL points over the whole season those price rises aren't justified. We have the last quarter of the season fresher in the mind, perhaps that's why the valuations I suggested look off. As I said in the article, it depends on whether FPL look at the season as a whole or focus on late season form.

In my opinion, if they focus on Leicester's late season form then many or all of their players will be over-priced. They won't perform like that for a whole season. As for Grealish, he has done virtually nothing. He has played a total of 825 PL minutes for 32 FPL points in his whole career. How can he realistically be valued at 6.0m?

Yeah no way Grealish is 4.5, but no way he is 6. 5.0 or 5.5 likely.

          Albrighton 5.0 imo

I totally agree, they should base it on the whole season - but history suggests they won't. Players like Coutinho, Papiss Cisse and Jelavic have had unreasonable rises after good performances in the second half of a season (the former was priced at £9.0 despite having played just 923 minutes). It will be a similar story with Benteke and Albrighton. As for Grealish: a young, exciting British player with enormous popularity and hype is always going to be ludicrously overpriced: look at Barkley this year, inexplicably placed at £7.0 without the returns to back it up.

They should let some of us set the prices I think. 🙂

I reckon I could produce a set of valuations that would put a lot more options in play than the 40-50 players that FPL managers end up focusing on.

I'd start with Aguero 14m and Hazard and Sanchez 12m.

I'm on this. Ricardo P is roughly 10/1 to be top scorer similar odds to Beradi. Bit of a differential

    Busk, Bardi
    Korb, Gibson, Guerreiro, Petkovic, Kaderabek
Silva, Redmond, Ricardo P, Hjoberg, Krejci
    Volland, Berahino, Poulsen

Gibson is a punt as well despite you believing otherwise. I hope he starts and may punt on him myself but saying he's a definite is far off the truth imo when he played only 3 games in qualifying.

It's a choice really. If you want 5 playing attacking midfielders, you may have to pick a danish defender for CS potential only, if you dream of defender goal hauls, then you might have to sacrifice one of your midfielder.

          Kadlec's injury ruined my team.

We'll see the Denmark line up prior to the deadline anyway - might be worth having a back up plan though...

    Busk, Bardi
    Ginter Garbutt Vestegaard Guerreiro Petkovic
    Hojberg, Silva, Redmond, Leitner, Viviani
    Paciencia, Hofmann, Berardi

Done, done and done. I vow not to touch this for at least an hour. 😉

That looks very balanced, nice work.

I love how much effort we're putting into this when it's such a crapshoot given the brief nature of the tournament!

And the fact we have a very limited pool of knowledge 😛

Well yes, but I prefer to attribute my inevitable shocking performance to the lottery like nature of the game rather than any failings on my part!

Speak for yourself. My pool of knowledge has no limits. It even has a knowledge of Busk, Jensen and Ronnow all starting at once. There's nothing it didn't have. Limitless! Oh, the omniscientia!

But at least you're only losing Czech field players for him.

😆 Invaluable, or valueless? I don't think I helped at all.

Hence I laughed. Shouldn't have added that last clause, it would have been clearer that I translated your "invaluable" to "valueless". I tried to help you after it, though (see above).
