Bournemouth acted quickly to boost their attacking options ahead of their Premier League campaign, capturing Christian Atsu on a season-long loan from Chelsea at the end of May. Atsu is one of four new arrivals at Goldsands Stadium so far this summer, with Artur Boruc, Adam Federici and Joshua King also agreeing deals to form part of the Cherries top flight bid.

Atsu’s new manager, Eddie Howe, was clearly delighted to have landed the wide man, and talking up his talents ahead of the forthcoming season:

“Although he is a young player, he is a player with outstanding experience when you look at the career he has had. He has had a lot thrown at him – Porto, Vitesse, Chelsea, on the international stage – and has done very well. We are loaning a player of huge potential and again had to fight off several other Premier League clubs to get him so we are very pleased. I think he will bring pace and ability to beat a man one-v-one which is very important in the Premier League so, for all those reasons, I think he is a great signing for us.”

THE HISTORY

Atsu began his footballing education with the Feyenoord Academy in Ghana before being snapped up by Porto in 2009. He was sent out on loan to fellow Primeira Liga side Rio Ave for the 2011/12 season, and made 27 league appearances, scoring six goals and registering four assists. That successful loan spell convinced Porto to keep hold of Atsu for the following campaign, where he chalked up 17 league appearances, scoring once and providing a single assist.

The potential he had shown in Portugal caught the attention of Chelsea, and they signed the attacker for a reported fee of £3.5 million in the summer of 2013, before sending him out on loan for the 2013/14 season, this time with Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem. Atsu enjoyed another productive loan spell, playing 28 times in the Eredivisie, scoring five goals and bagging six assists.

The winger spent last season on loan at Everton, and made 13 appearances in all competitions. He only played five times in the Premier League, though, starting just once, and failed to score for the Toffees, registering a single assist.

Atsu made his debut for the Ghana national team in 2012 and has currently made over 40 appearances for his country, scoring nine goals. He was named Player of the Tournament in this year’s African Cup of Nations, where Ghana lost to Ivory Coast in the final on penalties, while he also was awarded the Goal of the Tournament for his strike against Guinea.

THE PROSPECTS

The 23-year-old is expected to mainly feature on the left wing for the Cherries, although he is versatile enough to be fielded on the right and as an attacking midfield player behind a lone striker. With Scotland international Matt Ritchie predominantly featuring down the right flank, though, Atsu appears far more likely to take Marc Pugh’s place on the opposite side in either the 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 systems favoured by Howe.

Pugh posted some decent statistics last year, scoring nine goals and providing five assists, but the signings of Atsu and Joshua King, who can also operate on the left wing, although he is primarily a forward, suggest Howe was keen to add some quality in that area.

Delving into the data, Atsu – with a security of starts – averaged 2.3 shots per appearance during his loan spell in Holland, compared to 1.5 for King and 1.4 for Pugh last season, illustrating the potential he could carry should he find a spot in Howe’s preferred starting XI.

Howe afforded his wide players plenty of freedom last season, and while that is likely to be restricted against some of the top teams in the Premier League, it should remain a key part of Bournemouth’s make-up in the top flight. The Cherries scored 98 goals in their 46 league matches in 2014/15, with Howe’s side determined to play on the front foot and dominate possession. That should enhance the prospects of the likes of Ritchie, Atsu and forward Callum Wilson when it comes to analysing their Fantasy prospects.

Atsu’s struggles on Merseyside may help in terms of his pricing in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). He was valued at 6.0 last season, but ended then campaign at 5.7 and a price tag of 5.5 this time around looks possible, given his lack of output at Goodison.

Clearly, though, he faces a tough task to usurp Ritchie as the best Fantasy option at Bournemouth. The Scot – who takes most of his side’s set-pieces and corners – racked up 15 goals and 17 assists last term and with an average of 3.3 shots per appearance. He undoubtedly remains the standout candidate from the Championship winners’ midfield and should come in at a cost no greater than 6.5 in FPL.

Pre-season will hopefully provide some clues at to whether Atsu is likely to be a regular starter for Howe’s side, who have been handed some kind opening fixtures for the 2015/16. With home clashes against Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford allied with trips to Norwich and West Ham in the first eight Gameweeks, he certainly has the schedule to make an instant impact in his new surrounds.

90+1' Max Meyer (Germany) has a good chance to score with a mid-range attempt after collecting a pass. He fires to the top right corner, but he can't generate enough power to trouble Jakob Busk (Denmark). Corner kick. Germany will have an opportunity.

Pereira and Wilson are the only ones who probably deserve a chance/good enough.

Rafael, Evans (if we sign a CB), Lindegaard (if we sign a replacement for De Gea), Nani, Hernandez, RvP (if we sign a ST), Powell, Varela, Janko, James, Keane and Henriquez all need to be sold.

I see Mata as occupying a role on either flank rather than a Midfield 3. I'd like to see Di Maria given license to roam as well and do whatever he wants. But to answer your question: Valencia, Jones and Carrick.

also have Bardi and Guerreiro, so if either score it will cost me defensive points. Taking Kane out for Kadlec may prove costly.

Seems Silva / Berardi it is then.

Silva would get more point if he does anything, given he is a mid + possible CS point.

Anyone with more experience in the McD game that can clear up a thing for me and a buddy?

Unfortunately for him, he has Korb on his bench (fist sub). However, he started Højbjerg who didn't play. He also want to bring in both Sabelli and Oliveira for tomorrows matches.

Players that have played can't be transferred in as far as I've understood, but they may come in automatically if a started player doesn't play. Can this happen while also making the two manager substitutions? Or do those stop any automatic substitutions from happening?

It really isn't Jay...I challenge you to buy a copy of MoH Warchest, put it on normal settings and see if it's harder than COD4....It really is a much harder, and better, game. (rubbish graphics by today's standard though)

        1. Jay_
          11 years, 28 days ago

I will give it a try Wakey 🙂 To be honest I barely played Cod4 in campaign mode (single player ) so i couldnt really say if in general it was the best, but for a multi player and online community feel it was the best, I got all my fun playing online, it was so free flowing and addictive, I really do miss playing it

I never play online because it's just too fast, nothing to think about at all and just all reactions...It's for a younger audience. Play MoH Warchest on any level other than easy and you won't be disappointed..promise...in fact even the easy level is hard for my son who plays COD all the time.

It's like that in team death match, it's all very hectic, but in search and destroy it's 6 v 6 and very tactical, and if you die you don't respawn until the end of the round, so lives are more precious, it's more about skill and brains , that's why I only ever played search and destroy and not team death matches

Hey guys what goalkeeper combinations are you looking at for next season?

    Just a ramble.

I'm sometimes quite disappointed (usually) with the way the gaming industry has gone (see above postings)...It's far too clever for it's own good sometimes.
Many years ago I had a PS1 and used to play a game called Colin McCrae rally..it was fab. Only six settings to set the car up and off you go...easy set up and great game play. Then my son got the latest version of it and I had a go..far too complicated and just rubbish. Same applies for Medal of honor and sensible soccer .
I'm always mindful of that when folk post about new rules that they want for FPL...be careful what you wish for, sometimes simple is better.

But the gaming industry isn't going to stay simple for ever. When all those older games came out at the time, people probably thought they were very complicated too until they got the hang of them. Same as today.

The gaming industry has firmly parked itself at the young repetitive market (COD and FIFA) and the dumbed down tablet market (candy crush and the like).

When I say the games were simple I mean they were simple in set up..not gameplay. It is much harder to get from one health pack to another in MoH wargames than it is to revive in COD4..and it is much better to drive H2H in Colin McCrae1 with two well set up cars than to spend three hours working out the set up in the first place...by which time the frustration has already set in, along with the off button.

I think they take it too far sometimes. I'm fine with graphics constantly improving, but there's no need to throw in millions of settings just for the sake of it.

I think that's why the Wii U is flopping. Because of that big nasty controller. Nothing wrong with the simple small one.

Exactly. I used to play Colin Mcrae with the wife...not too much mucking about with settings and just a basic race between us.Fantastic, she was really good.

I'm with you on this 1 dr. I'm relatively young, maybe old in gaming terms, at 26 and use to love ps1 shooters eg syphon filter, metal gear and moh- 3 big variations. Iv gave most consoles a go since, but haven't gave any more than a days worth of play- by the time u set the games up and understand what's goin on the days gone. Any suggestions on games that would be more straight forward but with the modern day graphics. I'm a perfionist so like ther to be either a rite answer or a wrong answer- I hate in modern games there's so many paths to take that, I want to be able to play a game where if I follow the designated 1 path I will have completed 100% of the game, seen all aspects of it and competed it end of story.

There are games for everyone. What you are looking for is probably the Wii. Simple games for people who just want to have a bit of fun (bet you'll enjoy Mario Kart!). I still like the PS4 and Xbox stuff personally.

Is the wii not a bit childish? I do really enjoy mario kart tbf. I think I'm in same boat as dr., I do like a game which requires skill and thought but I don't want to waste time on the million different options now given. Like the recent football managers giving simplified versions where you can complete a season in a relaxing 2 days after a long day at work. Wish more games would do the same

Good post. When I play my wife, or son's, at a driving game like Colin McRae, all we want to know is who can cut the corners best and who can get through the gears the quickest, We don't want to know about which roll bars work best with which gear ratio...as a fraction of a %....

I do love Super Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4, Mario Kart etc etc. on the Wii and me and my Mrs. are big fans of the Wii.

but when I want some serious gaming, I do prefer the more complicated games on my mates XBox. As you guys correctly say, the 'good' games these days seem to be great graphics+ complicated controls unfortunately.

Sadly it's not a console that's easy bought second hand now after so many years as majority of games now scratched and not looked after, whereas iv bough game boys online in recent years to play Pokemon for nostalgia reasons (and the fact it's flippin fantastic) and have worked 100%. Use to build them sturdier

As we seem to be in video game mode, Arkham Knight apparently has cut out most of the atmosphere breaking boss battles from the first 2 games and replaced them with (for the most part) atmosphere breaking Batmobile sequences. Not that surprising I suppose, and at least it'll be a change of pace

Yep. Like the Arsenal midfield with Cazorla, Ramsey, Walcott etc, Utd have Mata, Depay, Di Maria, Fellaini, Herrera. All of them could fire and you could easily miss points.

I'll probably go for Rooney if Aguero out for the first few weeks

We should have at least 2 midfielders that are worth a shot. Pre season will show us if Depay is a starter too
