Our “Sleeper” series of articles focusses on those previously profitable Fantasy assets who underperformed in the season gone by. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku fits that description perfectly.

Following a successful loan spell at Everton during the 2013/14 season, where he scored 15 league goals, hopes were high for the big Belgian last time out. Lukaku made his move to Goodison Park permanent, signing for a club record fee of £28m from Chelsea, after making only 15 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Handed a price tag of 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the Toffees frontman made a reasonable start to last season, scoring twice and providing an assist during the first five Gameweeks. Following blanks against Liverpool and Manchester United, he found the net four times in his next seven outings, although crucially, he failed to register a single double-figure haul over that period.

The 22-year-old forward endured a barren spell between Gameweek 15 and 22, registering just a single assist, before grabbing the winner in the 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on January 31.

The second half of the season again highlighted the Belgian’s inability to register consistent attacking returns, scoring attacking points in just four of his final 13 appearances. Lukaku’s first double-digit haul came in the 3-0 win against Newcastle in Gameweek 29, while his highest score of the season arrived against West Ham in Gameweek 37, where he bagged a goal, an assist and full bonus in the 2-1 win.

Although he excelled in the Europa League by scoring eight times, Lukaku was far from prolific on the domestic stage and converted just 9.5% of his scoring opportunities. The Toffees striker ranked joint 20th among forwards for bonus points (with 12 accrued), compared to eighth for total points. He ended the campaign with 135 points, less than he had managed over the previous two seasons (168 and 159), averaging just 3.75 points per appearance.

THE PROSPECTS

Partly due to their involvement in the Europa League, it’s fair to say that the Merseysiders endured a difficult year. Manager Roberto Martinez never seemed entirely sure on whom to play in tandem with Lukaku, and with rest and rotation rife, the likes of Ross Barkley, Aiden McGeady, Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith, Aaron Lennon, Leon Osman, Arouna Koné and Samuel Eto’o were all tried in the positions behind the striker.

This time around, though, the Toffees won’t have the distractions of the Europa League, which has seen the league form of the likes of Tottenham, Swansea and Stoke also suffer in recent years. Hopes are high, then, that, with less need to tinker due to fatigue, Martinez’ side will replicate the displays that saw them earn a fifth-placed finish in his first year at the helm in 2013/14.

Despite hinting at his preference Champions League football, Lukaku is expected to stay at Goodison for the season ahead and a price of 8.5 to 9.0 is anticipated for a player who is now the Toffees number one spot-kick taker, having usurped Leighton Baines in the pecking order.

One look at the underlying stats certainly bodes well for Lukaku’s prospects in 2015/16. As the focal points of his side’s attack, the target man sat fifth amongst forwards for total attempts (105, just eight less than Harry Kane), whilst Lukaku’s tally of 66 efforts inside the box was just one less than both Harry Kane and Diego Costa. Sitting fourth amongst frontmen for attempts on target (41) in 2014/15, and fifth for chances created (38), Lukaku – as he’s shown before – could be a real Fantasy force if he and his team-mates can start sticking away their opportunities with greater regularity.

On the downside, the opening schedule has done little to persuade us he will be worthy of our initial investment. Aside from their home opener against Watford, Martinez’ men then face a run which pits them against last season’s top eight, in addition to a trip to West Brom, in the following nine fixtures. Given that the schedule eases significantly from Gameweek 11 onwards, many Fantasy managers will be happy to afford Lukaku the chance to ease his way into the new campaign before eyeing up his potential acquisition.

    Chile 1-0 Uruguay
Uruguay defend resolutely for an hour, get Cavani sent off for 2 yellows and deservedly lose. Chile played some very nice football again, and again don't look very clinical

If needs must. E.g. injuries and you need a stop gap striker who happens to have form and fixtures. I think he'll get around 150 points but it's anyones guess when he'll score those points

    Adrian(5)Boruc(4.5)
    Koscielny(6) Smalling5.5) Creswell(5.5) 4.5 4.0
    Sanchez(11.5) Hazard(12) Walcott(8.5) Ritchie(5.0) 4.5
    Aguero(12) Deeney(5.5) Vardy(6)

That's a rough idea of my early plans with Ivan Henderson Benteke Costa all under consideration strongly plus Firmino and Depay, would love them prices to be accurate but probably half of them could be higher, if so would likely drop Creswell to a 4.5 or 4.0

Nice, bit too expensive at the back for me though.

      I'm thinking

      Myhill Ruddy
Kosc, PvA, 4.5 Leicester, Prodl, 4.0
      Hazard, Mane/Walcott, Silva, Ritchie, 4.5
      Rooney, Benteke, Deeney

Assuming Aguero is not back from Copa

        5.0 4.5 = 9.5
        6.0 5.0 4.5 4.5 4.0 = 24
        11 8/9 10 6 4.5 = 39.5/40.5
        10.5 9 6.0 = 25.5

        Total = 98.5/99.5

Yep I like it Sab. I'm guessing you have Costa in the 11 slot?

It's all speculation but I can't see Argentina not making at least the final, which would see Aguero possibly miss the first few weeks

Yeah guess Costa in at the 11 slot.

              Terry or Kosh
              Hazard and Silva
              Aguero and Costa

Think that as a basis, maybe a bit of Ramsey if he settles in.

As you said, its guessing but its fun

Dropping Costa to a Giroud/ Benteke might happen

For all of his faults Giroud scores good points. Was he 8.5 last year? Without a forward signed i may still look at him

                  Yeah 8.5.

I'm not the biggest fan Sab, I had him last year during some of his amazing run and captained him for 10 points once, but he's a very up and down, confidence type player. Look at that amazing streak on, everybody was throwing the kitchen sink to get him in and saying he was essential for DGW37, then didn't score again that season haha.

Another worry now is rotation with Walcott who could play up front

True. The Walcott thing would be my main worry.

My thinking is that are a few key spots in your team which dictate the whole make up.

GK- Most go cheap, only choice is rotating 2 or 2 from the same team

DEF- One expensive, one moderate, the rest cheap, look at rotation for the cheapies

MID- get Haz and Silva. Have one 4.5 player

FW- get Aguero or at least plan for him after 2 weeks. One FW spot to a cheap striker in the 6.0 range

This leave the 3rd and 4th MID and 2nd striker spot as the most variable

If you go for Costa as 2nd stiker then affects budget in mid of course. If going for a Benteke or Giroud then the 3rd mid goes from a Ramsey to a Sanchez. Most 4th MIDS will be a 5.5/6 punt

Yep I agree. And yeah a nailed on Walcott would be amazing but I doubt it'll happen. Probably plump for Mane.

                Yep Nice.

I'm actually liking the idea of Kosc, good, cheaper alternative to Ivan/Terry, arguably better fixtures and wouldn't be surprised to see Arsenal tighten up after some new arrivals.

Morning Jay. I love a bit of this type of thing.

Im looking at price spread something like this-

      4.5/4.0
      6.0/ 5.0 /4.5 /4.5 /4.0
      11.0/ 10.0/ 7.5/ 5.5/ 4.5
      12.0/ 11.0/ 6.0

im really hoping Haz come in at 11.0

      i would say walcott (9m)..ritchie(5.5)..aguero(12.5)..deeney(6)..vardy(6.5)..smalling(6)

could take out sanchez if chile goes far in the cup..also your current structure will limit you when the mid price attacker (8.5m-9m) start to perform..not that many options in the 5-7m when the likes of deeney and vardy not performing.

If Liverpool don't buy a top class striker and Sturridge remains fit he could well deserve his premium fpl price tag. With both Couthino and Firmino are feeding him ball he will be racking up the goals.

2pts from top spot....one to five win summit......all p1sh prizes mind you.

Thing is anyone with in top 2K can probably still win this.....so few points between anyone, because so few points scored. Only three more games, couple of right/wrong captains and you move all over the shop.

I guess there being so few points to be had can be both a good thing and a bad thing. Good in that little points being scored will mean little movement in the rankings leaving you up there. Your main hurdle now will be the captaincy as all the team are going to look the same. Time to be a dullard and play I template to stay there.

Every country has slightly different gambling rules, but inching in general it's only gambling if you pay something in. And for the tougher countries just by there being a cash prize will be gambling.

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin expects his future to be resolved in the "coming days".

The France international has been linked with a summer move away from St Mary's, with Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham all interested in him according to widespread reports.

"The negotiations are ongoing and should be completed in the coming days," he told France Bleu Alsace radio station. "Hopefully before the resumption of [Southampton's pre-season] training next week."

    Who will Sign him?

Its a good strategy. I think you should play your wc at semis, as we'll see the line up for final and no bench needed at that time.

So last year Mannone was 4.5 at the start and Panti was at Man City for 4.5. Then Panti moved to Sunderland and became number 1, meaning he was a 4.5m regular. He makes a lot of saves, and they keep a few clean sheets at home.

They are consistently bad at defending (especially Brown) so the opposition get lots of shooting opportunities. When it was Coates and O'Shea at the back they are both slow and got shredded by pacy strikers.

Sunderland conceded more long shots than any other team last year. Long shots are much easier to save.

At first glance yes but pre-season will help us see if any 4.0s stand a chance

Not necessarily. Liam Moore was 4.0 and played the whole of the first 9 games for Leicester last season. Dummet also played a lot when fit. I think the cheapest guaranteed starters are normally 4.5 but hopefully someone will get transferred/loaned after the prices are released (Wisdom last year) or someone at 4.0 will do really well in pre-season and get in the side.

Yun was first choice for most of the season. PVA anyone? Wisdom played entire first half. There will usually be at least one or two defenders who will creep in at 4m.

Yeah i think this is seen different internationally? Because we know it's in England, we tend to include the sponsor over the 'England' for the first initial. Whereas abroad i'm assuming it helps to specify the league that you mean by including the nation, rather than the revolving sponsor of it?

Ah, see I've heard plenty of people refer to it as the EPL. More so than the BPL, which is commonly accepted here. Rarely the PL. But i'm not in NZ, so no idea how it's seen there.

Should be PL on here. Everyone knows what we're talking about. EPL if it's not clear.

Would bet anything that the sponsors started this BPL nonsense. Why play into their hands. If Spam get the next deal will we call it the SPL?

Clyne should be wrapped up pretty soon. Very different from liverpool. Business done quickly, very little info leaked and not one peep from Brendan Rodgers. Lessons being learnt?

This has to be the worst rumor, right?

Real Madrid are preparing to make a £21m bid for Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny to replace Sergio Ramos, according to reports in Spain.

The Independent reported this morning that Manchester United have tabled a £30m+ bid for the Madrid man and it seems they are keeping tabs on potential replacements.

If Ramos is only putting the United rumours out there to get a new contract, this could be Real's way of saying they don't need to be held to ransom.

You'd hope so. I don't know where the contract talks are at and if it's about money or length. Just saying this could be Real's way of seizing the initiative back.

It's hard to see how Ramos would be anything but a serious FF players worst nightmare. Just as likely to score as get sent off. The sort of player you don't want in your team, but you also don't want to see in your rivals teams either.

True that, but I can see him being a bonus magnet aswell with his aerial duell strenght and excellent passing skills, so that along with the goal threat might tip it to the want in your team side.
(Price and general defensiv team form also major factors ofcourse)

As a Utd fan I know I'm going to be swayed by him if he comes to us. Anything above 6m would be a turn off, but if he came in at 6m I'd probably rather own him over Mert and Kosc or any of the city defenders. And I can see that going badly wrong.

Not to self. Just chelsea defenders in the prem bracket. Just chelsea defenders.

What's your expected price tag for Baines, now that he's no longer on penos?

I wouldn't even consider him if he is more than 6.0 and if priced the same, I 'd rather go for Coleman.

I expect Baines to suffer the most dramatic drop in popularity from last season.

    Guess last year was RvP

With Soton, Spurs and Liv involved in European cups, I can see Eve sitting 5-7 for most of the season.
They have the potential there with Lukaku, Barkley Mirallas, maybe Deulofeu. And the defense is not that bad

West broms start is tough. Might be better to wait a few weeks. Though pulis teams can get clean sheets anytime. I like boruc as a pick, Hes got clean sheets every where throughout his career.

I think most people would still opt for a Chelsea by default, and then maybe add an Arsenal and three uber-cheapies. But there could be a 1m difference between Chelsea's (6.5) and Arsenal's (5.5) cheapest regulars, which is a lot with so much else to fit in elsewhere.

          5.5 + 5.0 could give you more options than 6.5 + 4.0.

Assuming Cahill and Azpi are both 6.5 (and Luis stays) then neither are nailed on and most would opt for Terry/Ivan 7.0+. That's a 1.5 difference.

            I'm looking at Kosc myself.

That's true. Yeah Kos seems to be the main contender, unless you throw in Cech and be done with it. Will depend on prices, but is an interesting one. Last year i started with Debuchy for 5.5m. Got an assist but then injured on the opening day.

Yeah, not a big fan of spending big on keepers though since cheaper ones usually almost match their points from saves.

And yeah I started with Debuchy too haha, horrible.

With Costa back CHE will be (for them) less defensively minded + with price hikes for their DEFs likely Arsenal could be more appealing. Kosc is underrated and Bellerin is an exciting talent but you never know with Wenger how he's going to set the side up - at least it should be more interesting at the top of the table this season.

I think Chelsea tightened up last part of the season because the goals dried up, and they would like to play more like they did in the first half, having a go at it, scoring goals and concedeing a few more as a consequense. Will have to se how they are set up when it kicks off, but I suspect they wont be much more attractive than any other top side defensively from the start.

The tightened up after January 27th when Costa was banned. After they they had no Costa for long periods, no Remy (also injured) and were relying on an ageing Drogba. Defensive tightening was the necessary consequence.

As for the start of the season, you are right in saying Chelsea will be more attacking again. But they still have the best defence in the League. Last time a Mourinho Chelsea was defending the PL title they kept clean sheets in their first 6 games of the season.

Could possibly go for both. Best part is that we get to see both play in community shield. Arsenal full backs could give us cheap options

That's be at least 13m on two defenders (if you want the nailed on ones). Which is obviously a lot considering the tight budget.

But yes Community Shield will be interesting and helpful.

Chelsea are always such good value but I'd be more confident with Arsenal having Cech like many others I'm sure.
