Watford made their seventh signing of the summer transfer window on July 14, snapping up Udinese right-back Allan Nyom on a four-year deal. Speaking to the club’s official site from the Hornets’ pre-season camp in Germany, the Cameroon international is looking forward to his new challenge after numerous years on the continent:

“I think my experience from playing in other leagues will help me, but I know this division is different to Spain, and I need to work for a place in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed the start I’ve had with Watford, there are nice players and there’s a good feeling here, so I want to play good for the team. I think my quality is good, and I want to help the team to stay in the Premier League. In Granada I played for six years, and it was a very good time. We started in Segunda Division B and we got to the first division, and that was very good for the club. I played with Ighalo and Ikechi at Granada, and I’m very happy to play with them at Watford.”

The History

Born in Paris, Nyom rose through the youth ranks at Nancy, before playing one season in the third tier of French football with AC Arles-Avignon. In the summer of 2009, the Cameroon international signed for Serie A outfit Udinese but was immediately loaned out to Granada.

Nyom instantly established himself as a regular starter at the Andalusian club, chalking up one goal in 39 starts during his debut season, with Granada earning promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. In his subsequent four years at Los Carmenes, Nyom missed just 17 league ties, registering one goal and five assists in the process.

On the international scene, Nyom elected to represent Cameroon, making his first senior appearance in November 2011 during a 3-1 win over Sudan. He was selected as part of the Indomitable Lions’ 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup and played the full 90 minutes in a dead-rubber group match against Brazil.

The Prospects

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores talked up Nyom’s defensive aptitude following his switch to the Premier League, saying that the Cameroonian’s unique skill set diversifies his options at the right-back berth:

“He’s a very good defensive player and I know him from Spain and the Cameroon national team. We have offensive players in his position like Anya and Paredes but he’s a different player who brings different characteristics. He’s a good defender, he’s defended against some of the best strikers in the world in the Spanish league so will provide us with good support.”

Nyom is of a different ilk to Juan Carlos Paredes – who adopted a wing-back role for a large portion of his 32 league starts last term. The Ecuadorian defender is the more attack-minded of the two – having racked up four assists in 39 appearances – yet is often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties. Ikechi Anya can also operate at right-back but was predominantly deployed as a right winger or left wing-back in the previous campaign. Nyom might well emerge as Flores’ first choice by virtue of his superior positional discipline, then, but there’s certainly no guarantees.

Assuming he can cement a regular starting role, Nyom’s limited potential for attacking returns renders him a peripheral figure on the Fantasy scene. One goal and three assists in the past two seasons is a paltry haul, particularly when the likes of Gabriele Angella – who is also priced at 4.5 – amassed an impressive 11 goals and seven assists over the previous two Championship seasons.

The former Granada loanee’s underlying stats buttress the notion that he poses minimal threat in the final third, given that his 11 shots would have ranked fifth among the Hornets’ defensive troops last term. On the flip side, Nyom did fashion 20 key passes for his team-mates, surpassing the efforts of Watford’s premier defensive creator, Miguel Layun (17 key passes).

Another factor worth noting is that Nyom is something of a card magnet; the defender has been booked at least nine times in each of his last five seasons in Spain.

In terms of fixtures, although the Hornets travel to Everton and City in the first four Gameweeks, they offer up a perfect home/away rotation with Bournemouth over the season, affording us a favourable run (AVL, WBA, SOU, LEI, nor, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the first eight Gameweeks. Although Nyom’s defensive qualities could improve his side’s chances of defensive returns – he was handed his debut in a 2-0 win over Paderborn earlier this week – his lack of attacking potential may well deter most from taking a punt.

I don't understand why people are ignoring Lukaku?

He's as good a pick as any for the first 2-3 weeks. If he does not deliver, you can always move him on. It's not like there are many better options at that price.

Don't think many people keep a striker who blanks for 2-3 weeks in a row anyway.

Southampton away and Man City aren't good fixtures GW2 or 3.

He is also the worst player to pick up for the short term, because his goals are seemingly random. He could easily blank with 3 home games against promoted sides.

I believe the first choice starting 4 is:

      Haidara - Coloccini - Dummett - Janmaat

      Haidara or Dummet.

Difficult to know with a new manager, and Dummet currently injured. Dummet could also play centre back.

I think Haidara is the better left back, personally.

Personally I rate Haidara as our best option but Dummett was favoured for most of last season.

Dummett has missed a lot of pre-season with injury so I think Haidara will probably get the first chance to establish himself.

Lascelles is a CB and has played only there in pre-season.

    Myhill / Henn

    Azpi / Kosc / Jenkinson / Francis / 4.0

    Haz / Silva / Walcott / Mane / 4.5

    Rooney / Gomis / Deeney

Aguero in gw 4 by getting Payet for Silva and rooney out for Agu.

    Fire away!

Good stuff. FWs a bit wonky but heavy mid makes up for it i think. Two things I would do differently:

      1. Kosc to Mert so you can get Guzan to rotate with Myhill. Will certainly be worth it.
      2. Why not get Williams instead of Jenkinson? Much better defensive side.
      3. For now Yoshida is the best 4.5 defender.

With these changes you would have nicely rotating GK pair and defense line of Chelsea-Arsenal-Swansea/Southampton. Much better clean sheet chances imo.

      I don't really have a plan, tbh.

I have Hazard, who could become Sanchez, or I could downgrade him to get Aguero, but unless an obviously underpriced player comes along, I imagine it'll be a choice of 1 of the 3, for me.

Alright, today I have changed my team more than most days.....did I end up better or worse? lets see....

    Butland / Schmeichel

Azpilicueta, Francis/Prodl, Ward/Morgan (these 2 will probably change for a nailed on 4.0 and rotation)

    Hazard, Cazorla, Mata, Yaya, Wanyama

    Pelle, Wilson ???

£12mil left over. I know 12 is a bad number, so either I go back in and find a million for Aguero, or I go for an 11/10.5 mil-ish Striker and upgrade one of the other strikers. but I really like Pelle with his fixtures and I want to give Wilson a shot, just incase he's amazing.

    Ruddy Rudd
    Azpi Francis Huth Ward O´shea
    Henderson Sterling Walcott Fabregas Fletcher
    Costa (+2mill) Rooney Deeneey

    Uber cheap keepers for savings.
Azpi each week, rotate the other 4.
Hendo and Fab for consistency, Sterling Walcott for the hauls.
Not enough for Sakho, therefore Deeneey.
    Rooney and Aguosta is obvious.

After 18th change this week my team looks like this:

      Ruddy/Butland
      Azpi Moreno/Kaboul Williams/Huth
      Cazorla Hazard Henderson Ki 4.5
      Costa Rooney Ighalo
      2.5 ITB

      - I am quite satisfied with this pair, didn't make a change there from beginning
      - Williams/Huth pair looks very good for me, as well as Liverpool home fixtures. Kaboul over Norwich defender - worse rotation with Liverpool but I didn't want to double defence with 2 Norwich players
      - I'd go for Sakho instead of Moreno but Frenchmen is quite injury prone so I am not much interested in him at this point
      - At the beginning for 8.5 mid was Mata but I decided to have Arsenal midfielder - so Caz in my team.
      - Henderson over Chadli/Milner - I'll probably begin with this choice
      - In front Ighalo to save 0.5 - I can go for Deeney as well
      - Williams&Huth in defence, Hazard in midfield, Rooney in attack - a must, until one of them get injured
      - After GW1 Costa -> Aguero

So that's my point of view on my team.
Now please help me with doubts, yes or no:
      1) Azpi, Moreno -> Ivan, Muniesa or Wollscheid - depends on Stoke's preseason
      2) Ighalo -> Deeney - or do you have other idea which player upgrade for 0.5?

      Thanks in advance

allegedly he was 3rd in line behind Kun and Yaya

But 3rd in line is not even something to consider. Chances of getting a penalty in the first place are slim and then hoping Aguero and Yaya aren't on the pitch, and then hoping Kolarov IS on the pitch.

He was way too close to the goal. All Kolorov pens should be 30 yards from goal.

For fifth mid and third striker:

    A Anya and Sakho
    B Abdi and Wilson
    C Atsu and Deeney

Ive read Anya plays as a winger but also as fullback and Abdi plays as a CAM or DM will this affect their returns?

Here's what I've got so far (the last of many many drafts!)

    GK: Pants and Myhill

DEF: Schlupp / Rose / Ivanovic / PVA / Hutton

MID: Hazard / Puncheon / Henderson / Walcott / Surman

FWD: Aguero / Callum Wilson / ??? 7 mil to spend poss Mirtovic?? Or Gomis maybe? See how pre-season unfurls

Thanks for any initial thoughts (ignoring Man Utd midfield....going to be a nightmare!). Also cautious re Walcott as need to see if he'll get the starts (I think he should).

Cheers for all the thoughts! 😀
