After acquiring the versatile Micah Richards earlier in the transfer window, Aston Villa bolstered their defensive options further with the recruitment of Nice left-back Jordan Amavi on a five-year deal. Upon his arrival at the Villains’ training base, the 21-year-old promised the supporters that he’ll impose his physicality in every encounter:

“I want to play well for this football club. I am determined to do that. I want to make rapid progress. I will be a decisive player. I want to make a big bond with the supporters. On the pitch, I want to connect and be a fan favourite. I will bring my combative nature to the side. I will fight for them every single match. Hopefully they will enjoy that. It’s a fresh challenge and one I can’t wait to embrace. I can’t wait to get started.”

The History

Born in Toulon, France, Amavi worked his way through the youth ranks at Nice from 2010, netting three goals in 30 outings for their reserve outfit. The French defender then made his full debut in the opening fixture of the 2013/14 campaign, before going on to earn a further eight starts that term.

In the wake of Timothee Kolodziejcza’s (Nice’s first-choice left-back at that time) transfer to Sevilla in the summer of 2014, Amavi was afforded much more pitch time during the 2014/15 season. The burgeoning talent missed just two league ties in the last campaign, bagging four goals in the process, though he proved to be something of a card magnet and was booked on 11 occasions.

On the international scene. Amavi has represented France at the U18, U20 and U21 levels but is yet to earn a senior cap.

The Prospects

Given that Amavi is reported to have cost the club £10m, it’s fair to assume that he’ll be immediately handed the left-back berth for the Villains this season. Discussing his new acquisition with the local media, Sherwood is clearly impressed:

”It’s someone we’ve been tracking for a long time. He’s dynamic, gets forward, has a good delivery, and is a decent size for a left-back. He’s quick and aggressive and will be suited to the Premier League. He plays at a high tempo and French football is quite close to the English league so that will help. It will give us competition and will be a decent addition”.

With former skipper Ron Vlaar now having departed after refusing a new contract, only Micah Richards looks nailed on amongst the rest of the Midlands outfit’s rearguard. Having operated as a centre-back in all of Villa’s pre-season matches so far, Richards could be partnered by any one of Ciaran Clark, Nathan Baker, Philippe Senderos or Jores Okore in the heart of defence next term, which somewhat negates his attacking potential.

Elsewhere, Leandro Bacuna has been intriguingly stationed in midfield during the off-season, with Alan Hutton taking up the right-back berth. The Dutchman (5.0) tallied five assists in just 983 minutes in the previous campaign and has been reclassified as a defender this term but if Sherwood keeps him in an advanced role, he could afford us an out-of-position option, with a share of set-pieces heightening his appeal.

The downside is that, like Bacuna, Amavi has been handed a 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, whereas Richards is available for 4.5 by comparison. Nonetheless, Sherwood’s attacking style of play should suit the young Frenchman and afford him license to maraud down the flank on a regular basis.

The France U21 international’s underlying statistics further underline his potential – aside from scoring four times last term, he created 32 chances for his team-mates, which would have placed him eighth in the Premier League for key passes among defenders.

Although Villa ranked third-bottom for goals conceded last season (57), they did managed to rack up ten clean sheets – just one fewer than Manchester United. Interestingly enough, Villa were one of only two sides (Crystal Palace being the other) to register as many victories on the road as they did on home soil. In the West Midlanders’ case, this gave rise to six shut-outs away from Villa Park – only four sides achieved more.

Looking at the fixtures, Villa’s excellent start to the campaign (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) offers hope of a decent start. With Richards cheaper and Bacuna potentially out of position, though, Amavi will find it difficult to initially stake a claim for our consideration. If he can settle quickly and take advantage of the fixtures, though, the young Frenchman may yet have a part ot play in our Fantasy campaigns.

Speroni was underratedly solid last year. I think he might have to wait until next season, but if Speroni has a few clangers in short succession I don't think Pardew would be too hesitant to give McCarthy a chance depending on how he looks in his cup games and in training etc.

            Azpi struggling to produce anything

Morrison can be Jedinak , Moses if he moves to spurs and start , Ibe same case , Carles Gil
Morrison instead starts with M like all midfielders ( Ozil aka Mesut )

Hopper wasn't nailed on anyway. Apparently Neil has a liking for Grabban, some Norwich fans believe he'll actually be their first choice striker. But Jerome is the player in situ based on last season.

At this point I think it's plump for Smalling or go without United defense. Similarly not too keen on Mert or Bellerin...though I like the funds you've designated for defense. Mahrez a big question mark over game time but could be a good shout. Hooper too - little low powered for me.

Mahrez looked very lively when healthy last season, and with Cambiasso out, I don't see who else stands to benefit. Leicester have not added anyone in MF.

Stoke wanted a Chelsea loan as part of the Begovic deal. Asked for Moses but were told Chelsea want to keep him. Took MVG instead.

I don't think Moses is going anywhere unless Chelsea get a sizeable offer, probably £12m+.

I'm currently working my team around the 4 players I want most. Aguero, Hazard, Rooney, Walcott.
This obviously means mid and def suffer. I'm beginning to think I'm suffering from"end of season" syndrome. By that I mean that usually in the second half of the season there's a template with a few names on all teams with a couple of differentials. Now this is acceptable then because due to injury/form etc. many potential options are ruled out leaving behind a select few.

At the start of the season I think the options are much wider therefore rather basing my team around 4 big hitters it'd be wiser to downgrade either Hazard or Aguero to fund 2 good 9m options as opposed to all eggs in one basket.

Does this make sense and am I right?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years
      10 years, 12 months ago

I don't think your rationale is correct, but I agree with your end point. For me, it is more about the 100m budget at the start and not stretching too thin behind several double digit priced players.

          Sure...

          Boruc
          Koscielny Clyne Huth
          Hazard Walcott Chadli Adam
Aguero Rooney £6m striker (Lambert/Adebayor) assuming they move*

          £4m keeper (Hamer/Schwarzer)
2x £4m defenders (Saylor and Targett currently but may change)
          Wanyama

I basically play the same 11 every week, with the bench players only coming on as auto sub regardless of fixtures. I select my starting players using my own rating system, with the bench players just hopefully playing for their clubs in case one of my starting 11 doesn't play. (Had players like Haidara, Boyd, etc last season)

I think having a good price structure is important and having players that are in large price groups. There is a massive midfield group in the 8.5-9m range and I think its necessary to have 2 players from this group so you can easily make transfers in this price range.

I think two 5.0s are the way to go, but yeah, which ones you pick is the tricky part 🙂 everyone has their warts...

This is ridiculous, Ivan is all the time in the box, like playing second striker. What I was thinking really going with Azpi instead. WOW. He is a must. His 15pter in GW1 will be painful to watch

Ivan prefers being a striker at the start of the season. Its a known fact 😉

this is true but the point being made is Ivan is playing pretty much up front, where as Azpil is not. so the theory is that will happen against most opposition, esp at the start of the season when they are not as tight defensively.

Smalling and Jagielka scored as many goals as Ivan last season. Does Ivan get many baps? Never owned him.

Prefer players like Cedric (attacking returns) and Williams (baps). Much better value, and the spare cash boosts your points significantly in attack.

agree with everything apart from cedric

He's only scored 2 goals in his entire career

1 assist every 8 games at Sporting though. Not phenomenal, but could pick up the odd few points.

Where are you taking the 2.0m from? Mane->Ritchie?

Ivan is the best defender of course, but the pts can be made up elsewhere imo.

He has good fixtures and if Koeman sets up the defense like he knows how to do he could be a good buy.

it really depends on what the rest of your team is like

If you have a strong team balance, I'd go J

If you're struggling to find balance I'd go K

But like i said - hard to determine without seeing the rest of the team
