Every season we see new games launch, new diversions and distractions from the regular Fantasy Football fare. The latest to catch our eye boasts a number of polished bells and whistles but, at its core, is refreshingly old school. A good thing.

In a crowded and competitive market, Dugout FC has gone back to basics to attempt to establish a Fantasy foothold.

Crucially, it’s a draft game – a very different proposition to the standard fare and a format that, only last weekend, was the subject of a notable community article.

As that article stated, there are a growing number of draft games available but, from our first impressions, Dugout FC might just have the edge and deserve our attention.

What is it?

Dugout FC and other draft-based Fantasy games take us back to our Fantasy Football roots; rolling back the years to when we took time to organise an auction and play with a team made up of unique players, dear to our hearts, over the course of the season.

If you fondly remember paying a fortune so that nobody but you would own Premier League goal machines such as Alan Shearer or Thierry Henry, then Dugout FC’s game should provide you with some cosy warm nostalgia.

Having said that, the game is very much up to date, with all manner of technology in play: online matchday hubs for real-time updates and live chat; IOS and Android mobile apps; an Opta stats-based scoring model and the ability to run your draft night and conduct transfers in game are all catered for.

You’ve got the option to to go full old-school and gather a bunch of mates in a pub to take part in the all-important draft in your private league. Or you can log in to the virtual “draft room” and bid against friends or complete strangers by joining a public league. There’s even an option to draw up a shortlist of desired players to take care of your draft, in case you miss out on the night.

Why Should I Play?

Well, it’s free for starters. For that reason alone, we’re struggling to find a catch.

Perhaps more importantly, as we become jaded with competing against fellow managers with template teams, Dugout FC provides an antidote.

There really is nothing quite like the drama and twists of a draft night. The plotting, the intrigue, the tactics, the highs of bagging your star pick and the lows of having to dip into the bin of rejects to complete your squad – it’s fair to say it’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Fantasy Football all those years ago.

Dugout FC takes the faff out of all the draft logistics, whilst claiming to have a unique Opta-based scoring system, taking over 2,000 events of every match into account, which they reckon is one of the best around. We’ll check in on that in a follow-up article.

Once the draft is complete, you’ll compete in a league of ten on a head-to-head basis – with three points for a win and one for a draw.

Each league can have multiple divisions and FC even takes care of the promotion and relegation up and down the ladder at the end of each season.

Your squad will consist of 18 players following the draft, although you can swap out players to pick up free agents from the player pool at any time. You can also enter into negotiations for swap deals with other managers in your division – it’s all taken care of within Dugout FC’s tech.

The game takes this further by generating stories of transfer speculation on behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing in your division.

How Do I Start?

By registering here: https://www.dugoutfc.com. As mentioned, it’s free to join.

You’ll then need to decide whether to join a league or set up your own. If you’ve got an odd number of players wanting to join, Dugout FC will provide a Caretaker Manager to play against one person each week for the three points. The Caretaker Manager scores the average of all other teams in the division for that week.

Once that’s sorted, arranging a time for your draft date and time is the main priority.

And if you want to get involved without signing up as a league chairman, we’ve set up our own Fantasy Football Scout Public League for you to join. Just click this link and request an invite and you’ll be signed up.

It’s first come, first served so the earlier you get involved, the higher the division of our league you’ll be placed in. And yes, before you ask, we’ve already filled the top division with Paul, Jonty, Granville and the rest.

Our default auction date for each division is currently Thursday, August 6, at 9pm UK time.

For more information about Dugout FC, visit their FAQ. We’ve also added a smart little movie they’ve put together, complete with over-enthusiastic narration (see below).

We’ll be following this article up with a more in-depth scan of Dugout FC’s scoring system and strategies next week…

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

We've hogged the top division with site contributors and we're going to try to get the draft night done in a pub venue. Proper old-school.

I guess so, you just have to be up at the time. We've got a couple of US guys in our Division so we'll have to tackle that.

You can set up a shortlist to do the bidding for you.

Well it's a newcomer so we can't say it's tried and tested, although it's been in development for two years and certainly looks polished. We've high hopes it's a game we can work with over the seasons.

    My team atm.

    Schmeichel (Fabianski)

    Francis, Kosc, Huth, Azpi (O'Shea)

    Sterling, Hazard, Walcott, Wanyama (Barry)

    Pellé, Rooney (Deeney)

And 2,5m ITB for Aguero or something.

He was captain last season, new season hasn't been confirmed yet.

Kaboul was Spurs captain last season and hardly played, Arteta is Arsenal captain, not seeing him in many Arsenal predicted line ups.

Coates and Kaboul are Sunderland first choice in my opinion.

Yes O'Shea might play, but he's not 100% nailed. Only Sunderland defender who is nailed on is PVA.

Evening all, how does this look, I am trying to plan for a fit gw1 aguero as that's the tougher team to put together:

    Coutois / 4m

    Williams / Cedric / huth / bassong / o Shea

    Haz / Theo / Henderson / chadli / wanyama

    Aguero / Rooney ...............Graham

Why migs? Liverpool defence is average. Yoshida won't be nailed. Certainly not 4th midfield quality.

      Schweinerlin Schneidsteiger

      Ronaldo Rooney Depay

      Benzema

Never played a draft style game before. Are you given a set amount of money say 100m to bid on whatever players you like?

No player values. You just claim a player in draft order so, if you go first and have the first pick in round one, you'll go last in round two etc...

just like any other snake draft for a specific sport. 1st round.. 1st pic... you pick a player e.g. hazard... hazard is the off the boards..2nd pick then selects a player

We're taking a look at that in a follow-up. I'm encouraged by the fact that, if you look at the player tallies based on last season, they look pretty sensible.

I can't play UFPL here in the States so am not even weaned onto -1 point for big chance missed for example. I just can't see myself counting how many blocked crosses my defender has made during a match or that's his second interception in the box, woot 1 point. It seems like a much nicer website than the one I used last season though

Rodgers has made it clear that 4-3-3 is the future and that Benteke will be the focal point of his attack on August 9. (James Pearce)

Lallana probably starts GW1&2 with cameo's from Firmino, who'll then take his place. I think.

There are 18 rounds in the draft, during each round a manager will pick 1 player to add to their squad. The order of the first round is completely random, the order is REVERSED for each round after that (e.g. if you got 10th pick in the first round, you would get 1st pick in the second round).

    ======

So 2 managers will get 9 first picks and 9 last picks? Compared to everyone else who will always get low priority picks. Seems a little biased, no?

      it's the way drafts work

so the guy who gets number 1 pick has to wait 19 picks before he can pick again

Oh, sorry I wasn't smart enough to realise that it is just one long continuous pick. Thats fair enough then. So, if I understand this correctly:

If I were last and your were 1st

I would get to pick player 10,11,30,31 etc.
And you get to pick 1,20,21,39 etc.
        ?

what is a better system? also low priority isn't really a meaningful term given that one round follows on from the next with no real difference between them. i would agree with you a little bit more if the first x rounds were attackers and then defenders etc.

      1. Egg noodle
        • 16 Years
        10 years, 11 months ago

Yeah that is what my initial understanding was. That there's a particular category of players per round. But yeah, now I'm happy with the way things are.

    3. Gazpilicueta
      • 11 Years

a better way to draft is to take turns for first pick, then its fair. player 1 gets first pick, then last pick, then second last, then third last, until he is first again. this other way seems very weird

      1. jam sandwich
        • 11 Years
        10 years, 11 months ago

this is essentially equivalent as the average pick number will be the same

          • 11 Years
          10 years, 11 months ago

I disagree, I think its essentially very different. a player could have to wait the number of other players involved x2 until he picks again, or x1. a big difference. Im not saying his team would be better or worse, but just less fair

        2. jam sandwich
          • 11 Years

actually given the number of picks isn't a multiple of ten but is even it will be more dispersed which is arguably less equitable
