Watford’s summer overhaul continued in earnest with the capture of Spartak Moscow attacking midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado last week. The 29-year-old – who played under Hornets boss Quique Sanchez Flores during his spell with Atletico Madrid – expressed his delight at the chance to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League:

“I am very happy to come to Watford and I want to play right now. The Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world and it’s a dream for a player to come and play here. I am happy to be with Quique again and I hope this season is good for everybody. I want to play in England and Watford is a good opportunity to play in this league, and I like this opportunity.”

The History

Born in Cadiz, a province of Southern Spain, Jurado began his footballing education at Real Madrid, where he spent three successful seasons turning out for the B side. Having netted 13 goals in 95 appearances for the reserve outfit, Jurado earned his league debut with the senior team in October 2005. After notching a further couple of La Liga cameos in the 2005/06 campaign, he made the switch to Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2006.

By virtue of injuries to Maxi Rodriquez and Martin Petrov, Jurado was afforded a regular starting berth during his debut term at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, bagging one goal across 33 outings. After finding his playing time drastically reduced the following campaign (three starts), the Spanish playmaker was shipped out on loan to Mallorca for the 2008/09 La Liga season.

Jurado enjoyed the best period of his career to date with the Balearic club, chalking up nine goals and ten assists in 35 appearances. He subsequently enjoyed an increased role upon his return to Rojiblancos, featuring in every single league tie of the 2009/10 season while amassing seven goals and five assists. A solid attacking output wasn’t enough to earn Jurado a starting berth at the start of the 2010/11 season, leading to his sale to Schalke.

Managing just three goals and six assists from 31 appearances over two years in the Bundesliga, Jurado made the switch to Spartak Moscow in September 2012 in the pursuit of first-team football. An initial loan deal was made permanent just two months into his stay in Russia’s capital, as the former Real Madrid starlet went on to bag three goals and four assists in 18 appearances (30-match season). The 2013/14 campaign proved to be Jurado’s most profitable in the Russian Premier League, harvesting eight goals and two assists across 29 outings. After earning just ten starts in his final season in Russia, Jurado opted for a change of scenery this summer.

The Prospects

The versatile Jurado has typically operated from a central attacking midfield role throughout his career, but he’s also spent a fair amount of time stationed on the flanks – particularly the left. Having played as a number ten for all but six of 32 outings during his debut campaign with Spartak, he alternated between a variety of roles (attacking/centre mid, winger and support striker) in the 2013/14 season, before occupying a left flank berth for nearly half (13/28) of his starts in the previous campaign.

Handed his debut by the club just three days after signing, the Spaniard made an instant impact by providing the assist for Troy Deeney’s winner against Dundee United. Tellingly, he was the only Watford player to be handed 90 minutes on Saturday, which suggests that Flores is keen to build up the playmaker’s match sharpness ahead of the season kick-off.

The Spanish boss has now employed a 4-2-3-1 in all but one of his side’s matches and it’s fair to say there’s plenty of competition for the three slots behind lone striker Deeney. Ikechi Anya and Odion Ighalo also started at the weekend, though the likes of Almen Abdi, Matej Vydra and new boy Steven Burghuis are all tussling for starting berths.

Jurado’s previous stint under Flores may well work in his favour and at a price of just 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he could stake a claim as a viable cheap midfielder. From a Fantasy perspective, Anya – at 4.5 – would be the more budget friendly option, whilst Vydra and Ighalo’s classification as forwards somewhat lessens their appeal.

The Hornets’ early schedule (eve, WBA, SOU, mci, SWA, new) sits on the tougher end of the spectrum, which might deter interest in their favourably priced assets. Indeed, Watford are rated bottom for attacking potential for the first six Gameweeks by our season ticker. For those who fancy Flores’ side to quickly find their feet, though, they alternate home/away with fellow promoted side Bournemouth if you’re looking for a rotation pairing to consider.

He wasn't even that bad last season? 10 goals. Which is his 2nd most he has scored in a season in his City career. Just was to expensive. He looks good during pre-seaoson.

At £8.5m I put him in my first draft and he hasn't left the team yet 😀

In my opinion this is the strongest non-Hazard team I have seen. Do you have an Aguero plan? Also, Sterling > Fabregas might be worthwhile until he settles at City?

        Thanks mate.

Was planning on Costa to aguero in a couple of weeks financed by downgrading mane to Chadli and then possibly benteke to someone.

I was thinking that when I put in aguero I would switch sterling to fab for chelsea cover.

        What do you think?

Which option do you guys prefer?

    A) Benteke + 4.0 def + 8.5 mid (Yaya/Mata/etc, already have Ars mid)
    B) Pelle + 4.5 def + 8.5 mid (Yaya/Mata/etc, already have Ars mid)
    C) Pelle + 4.0 def + Fabregas

If C it would mean I would have both Fabregas + Hazard in my mids. At the moment I'm leaning towards C. Currently have no Southampton "cover" and they have great fixtures to start the season (Unlike Liverpool). Pelle has also been on fire during pre-season and is a proven/nailed goal-scorer. Thoughts?

no. players are individuals. cazorla may or may not be a good option, same goes for ramsey, özil, walcott. you gotta compare these players against the players in the same price bracket (mata, depay, eriksen, yaya, sterling) and make a decision if they are worth it or not. not just blindly put them in because sanchez is awesome. for example, you werent able to cover kane with another spurs last season.

No that is true but I'm not basing it on a guess. I do believe I can find an alternative way into the Arsenal attack with Ozil and possibly Bellerin as well. Someone used an example of how Fabregas tends to always assist Costa. This could be a good way to 'cover' Costa.

What I'm saying is that if Sanchez does well there is a good chance that Ozil and one other (Giroud/Walcott/Bellerin) will have something to do with it

the outcome might be similar but i dont like the thinking behind coverage. if fabregas always assists costa you should see him as a 9.0 mid who gets a lot of assists and compare if he scores better than other 9.0 mids. costa you should judge as a 11mil forward and compare to rooney for example or giroud + 2 mil etc.. fab can assist costa all he wants but there is a chance you are better of without either of them and should instead go for sterling + rooney (just an example), imo thinking coverage restricts your vision

Ya Koeman has said they looking for one, hence considering the switch. Surprising to see Kos getting so much love on the forum. Almost 60% of teams have him, while rest of the Ars defence hardly getting any love.

So I think this will be my team, barring any major transfers/injuries

    Kasper (Hennessey)
    Azpi, Cedric, Huth (Francis, Targett)
    Hazard, Walcott, Depay, Mane (Surman)
    Costa, Benteke, Sakho

Targett to move once Bert back?
Mid looks nice but Walcott and Depay both are hit and miss, Ozil, Mata safer options.

      Great side otherwise.

      1. The Devil Wears Prada
        • 14 Years

Ya, definitely short term for Targett, but I can only afford 4.0 defender. I think Walcott and Depay have a very high ceiling for points, and definitely seem worth the risk. Easier to downgrade Walcott to Ozil rather than scrambling to find 0.5 somewhere to upgrade to Wally later on

Targett is definitely the weakest link, but it's hard to find 0.5 anywhere. If Walcott doesn't do the buiness, he'll become Ozil/Cazorla and Targett will become a 4.5 defender. I'm fine with playing Kasper week in, week out.

Burnley also could, they scored the 2nd most goals in the Championship (behind Leicester) when they got promoted. Look what happened to them when they played in the EPL. Championship stats mean nothing.

      Costa, Tekkers and Sakho

      Rooney GW2.

Worried about Rooney a little, and Sakho not best gw1.

Could Yoshida yet end up first choice for an extended period?

    - Failed bid for Alderweireld in summer.
    - Florin Gardos injured
    - Failed bid for Calum Chambers on loan
    - Latest transfer rumours are James Chester or Steven Caulker both of whom contributed heavily to their teams being relegated last year.
    - Time running out to develop a CB partnership with Fonte even if they sign one

Strong defence and midfield, but you are sacrificing your forwards a little as a result. Perhaps downgrade the midfielder you're least confident about to improve the front three? Fab to Ritchie (for example) would let you upgrade Defoe to Benteke/Pelle or Sakho to Giroud (maybe Kane?).

I think if you have to go 352 as the default formation, Hazard (or Sanchez when fit) are very important to give you regular midfield attack points.

I think I'm going to settle with this bunch.

    Hazard - Walcott - Ozil - Milner - Mulumbu/Fletcher
    Rooney - Pelle - Sakho

My question is, would you start the season off with Rooney or Costa? TBH, I'm not a big fan of Costas first 3 games. Not sure he's worth 11.0 million for those 3 games alone, after which I'll probably change to Aguero.

      Not sure about double Liverpool

Wanyama and Saylor are too popular for my liking.

      The rest looks fine

Thanks guys. I am considering getting rid of Henderson and playing a 6.5 option just to keep some money in the bank because wen kun is fit he needs to be in my team.

Defoe has amazing first 5 games and I will probably wildcard after 6 gameweeks so he's a decent shout at 5.5m

      Thanks again

    Morning All,

Thought I'd ask for some tips whilst it was a little quieter 🙂

    Butland Speroni

    Ivanovic Huth Francis Prodl Bassong

    Fabregas Sterling Walcott Milner/Chadli Anya

    Rooney Sakho Pelle

Have 2.5 itb to do one of the below:

    Roo>Kun
    Fab>Haz
    Wally>Sanchez

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

New signing at Watford I believe that will push Anya out of the team.

      Do Fab to Haz now.

      2/2
      1/3
      1/3
      2/2 = 6/10

Fwiw, I would change Ivanovic to Koscielny, and Bassong to Williams. Chadli. I would also solidify that midfield, by shifting either Sterling to Yaya Touré, or Walcott to Cazorla. I am not a fan of Fabregas, as I believe that he represents poor value.

Cheers fella, hmm Ivan>Kos could work, just hoping he keeps fit. Could also start with Haz as I have the cash. But then would need 2 TF to get Kun. Crikey I just wish the season would start, all this tinkering is melting my brain!
