After weeks of negotiations, Norwich finally completed the signing of Hull’s Robbie Brady for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £7 million. The Republic of Ireland international penned a three-year deal with the Canaries and joins Graham Dorrans, Youssouf Mulumbu and Andre Wisdom in making the move to Carrow Road this summer.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Brady spoke of his happiness after dropping a division with the relegated Tigers:

“The feeling of being wanted is something I’m so grateful to the manager for, and to everyone who’s been behind it. It’s another opportunity to play at the highest level, which is where everyone wants to be. I’ll relish it, and will hopefully play as many games as possible. It’s a new chapter for me at Norwich now and I’m raring to go.”

THE HISTORY

Born in Dublin, Brady was spotted by Manchester United scouts playing for local side St. Kevin’s Boys. He joined the club’s academy shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2008, and made his debut for the reserves just months later. Brady played under-18 and reserve team football for the next few seasons, before graduating to the reserves on a permanent basis for the 2010/11 campaign.

The Irishman was sent out on loan to Hull City ahead of the 2011/12 season, and went on to make 39 appearances during the campaign, registering three goals and a couple of assists. Brady returned to Old Trafford the following year but he only managed one senior appearance for United, however, coming on as a late substitute in a cup win over Newcastle in September 2012. An initial loan return to Hull was made permanent in January 2013, with Brady’s four goals and 13 assists in 32 appearances guided the Tigers from the Championship back into the top-flight.

Brady went on to star for the Tigers on their return to the Premier League, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 16 appearances, before undergoing surgery to cure a hernia problem, missing out on the club’s run to the FA Cup final, where they lost 3-2 to Arsenal. Last season, Brady made 27 league appearances, registering two assists, but the Tigers two-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they finished 18th.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, Brady made his international debut in a 4-1 win against Oman in September 2012, scoring once and setting up two of the goals. Brady has since amassed 12 caps for his country, scoring three times.

THE PROSPECTS

Having featured in several different positions for both Hull and the Republic of Ireland, Brady should provide Norwich boss Alex Neil with plenty of flexibility. Speaking about his big summer signing, Neil revealed Brady would primarily feature down the left flank:

“I’m really pleased to sign Robbie. As everyone’s aware, we’ve been chasing him for quite a while, He’ll be an absolutely perfect fit for us. Hopefully he can go on and show everything that we think he’s capable of. He’s dynamic, he’s got good energy to get up and down the pitch, and he’s got a fantastic left foot which makes him a real danger at set-pieces. He’s got a lot of things in his locker. It gives us good competition down the left side.”

In terms of tactics, Neil tended to operate with a lone striker system after taking the helm last year, rolling out 4-4-1-1, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 formations. Bradley Johnson shone on the left flank, racking up 15 goals, but with Martin Olsson likely to miss the start of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery in the summer, Johnson has been occasionally fielded at left-back in pre-season. Brady also has plenty of experience in the position, particularly at international level, and offers an alternative until Olsson is ready for action.

The Swede is expected back shortly, though, and his return may well see Brady oust Johnson down the left of midfield. Certainly, he possesses greater pace than Johnson and is more of a natural wide man, with his cultured left foot able to deliver great quality into the box. Alternatively, Neil could utilise him centrally in the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker.

Coming in at 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Brady sets you back the same as Johnson and Nathan Redmond, whose place looks secure on the right of midfield. Neil’s words suggest he’ll be handed a fair share of dead-ball duties, whilst Brady will be also hoping to climb up the spot-kick pecking order, having occasionally taken penalties for Hull.

The Canaries have been handed a kind start to their return to the top flight, with their first six home fixtures (CPL, STO, BOU, LEI, WBA, SWA) particularly friendly. Away trips to Sunderland and Newcastle in the opening nine Gameweeks are also reasonable match-ups, so Brady could provide Fantasy managers with a decent budget option. Given that he’s joined with just over a week until the season starts, he may need time to settle into his new surrounds before some consider taking the plunge.

    Quick RMT

    Butland / Hennessey
    Azpi Cedric Francis Huth O'Shea
    Hazard Mane Walcott Chadli Wanyama
    Aguero Benteke C.Wilson

If Aguero isn't fit, Rooney as a placeholder

    What I don't like:

    - Cedric. Really wanted that to be Fonte/5.5m but don't know where to squeeze 0.5 from
    - No Rooney but Aguero + Rooney unbalances the side
    - Benteke. Not many strikers up to 8.5 and I'm not sure if he'll hit the ground running. Think he'll do well over the course of the season. Probably have him to early.

I don't mind Cedric. I don't mind Benteke either. I think the team looks fine. Not a huge Chadli fan, here. Do Stoke and WBA rotate well?

Not sure about Benteke, and I feel having Rooney as a placeholder for three weeks might be a waste, just have a plan to get Augero GW4 unless you plan to start with him regardless.

      Like that defence a lot.

I'm not feeling Rooney in terms of money and balance throughout my team. I think he'll do very well but Aguero and Hazard are the closest to being essential. Building the team around them doesn't allow me to get Rooney without unbalancing the side unfortunately.

It scares me to start without Augero, but with all the doubts and their opening three fixtures. I know he can score against anyone, he scored a hat-trick against Nuer.

Do you think having (6.5/6/11.5/8.5/4.5) unbalanced? because that's what I will be left with when I get Augero for Rooney.

I think that's unbalanced by at least .5, probably 1.5m. Depends on the whole team, of course.

mmm I'm going off schmeichel a bit too. I looked up begovic PPG last year though and they are pretty poor - thinking maybe Stoke keepers don't have to make many saves but also don't get cleanies?

The highest scoring 4.5 keeper scored 115 points last year. Ruddy in 2013/2014, when Norwich got relegated, scored 135 points. 12 clean sheets. 125 saves. 8 bonus. Damn!!!

wow tempting. my only concern is if i have ruddy/rudd and Norwich defender then if any good mids or strikers emerge from them I'm stuck. can't see me wanting any mids or strikers from LEIC under the tinker man though so may just stick with shmeichel

I gather you are really long on Theo, because you could easily "downgrade" Walcott to your 8.5m Arsenal midfielder du jour to get that 0.5m to move Cedric to Fonte.

I have Cazorla myself, and would guess that he, Ozil or Ramsey would all be pretty viable replacements for Walcott.

I appreciate the thought but there's next to no chance I'm letting go of Theo 😉 I'll probably do Theo to Ozil/Cazorla once Alexis is back though

Ok. I do see the very strong love for Theo on these boards. As an American who only really glommed onto the EPL about 5 years ago, outside looking in, I see Walcott as a big fan fave here. I am sure there is a history that supports it.

    Question for everyone:

Do defensive midfielders deserve a place in fantasy football?

What terry, matic, and coutois did defensively last season was just as important as what fabregas, costa, and hazard did at the other end of the field. But, the only person on this list who isn't recognized by fantasy folks is matic. Is this fair?

We remember the likes of Henry, Ronaldo, and lampard for their attacking returns. Mourinho's and Pulis's defence are known for their clean sheets. Surely the great defensive mids such as makelele, vieira, and keane have to be recognized too, no?

Defensive mids get points for scoring goals or assisting but obviously not as much or often as attacking mids and strikers. So, if there were a point system where defensive contributions count (tackles won, blocks, etc.) then other positions can also get points but not as much as the DMs.

I know CL fantasy has a recovered balls criterion where for every five recovered balls the player gets a point. However, honestly, is this enough? Could a better scoring system be put in place?

Or is the entire concept of fantasy flawed in that it simply cannot incorporate DMs?

    Cheers.

A bit flawed. The Fantasy MLS system is surprisingly better than the FPL system as it rewards good defensive play.

      +1 for every 6 Recoveries
      +1 for every 6 CBI
      +1 for every 3 KP

With this system, the standout centerbacks and defensive midfielders can rack up 2-3 BPs per game.

      Agree....

I don't think DMS are fairly represented in the FPL points system....

The possible solution would be a separate category and every squad has too have at least 1 DM in...

    3. Davido989
      • 15 Years
      10 years, 7 months ago

Yes DM's should be credited with recoveries and clean sheets. 2 points for every 5 recoveries, 3 for a clean sheet. Could work, might not work. Who knows.

We all know this but it's very difficult to devise a way of doing it.

Part of the problem is categorisation. Fabregas plays alongside Matic in Chelsea's 4-2-3-1, would you categorise him as a DM? How about Henderson, Cazorla, Yaya?

Obviously Matic is a DM and Fabregas is not. Coquelin is, Caz is not etc.

That said, the game is fine how it is.

          • 11 Years

Well, sorry but it's not obvious at all. Are you basing it on the position they play or your judgement of what kind of player they are?

If it's a matter of judgement then Matic is not a classic DM either. He's very positive, gets forward, nothing like the Makelele style. True DMs are very few and far between nowadays, the "double pivot" that is currently in vogue doesn't often use a classic DM.

          1. Nabs Kebabs
            • 14 Years
            10 years, 7 months ago

This is my judgement but I'm sure if we used 'average positions' on the field it would all work out accordingly so. DM's have changed, so what? We now must realize this and adapt so. There is almost always a much more defensive player in the pivot these days.

FG - if it's Chelsea and you don't agree with Ruth you should probably just keep it to yourself. Is this not known by now? It should be known.

We have access to maps showing where players where every minute of a game these days. That would be a good indicator of determining a players position category and it really could not be argued - it's more or less the definition of position. Not as hard as you make it out

You're obviously right and make a good point for starters.

BUT main reason why FPL is such a largely popular game is because of it's simplicity. You choose keepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards and that's it. Now obviously the Towers screwed with that this season with these chips, but I still believe it's the simplicity that atracts the large crowd. And that's what gets me going aswell.

What do you think of this then. The defence and keepers look to rotate well but are cheap and obviously the third choice forward is about as cheap as it gets. But the midfield is a monster and I am not liking a lot of the forward options out there at the moment.

    Butland - Schmeichel
    Huth - Cedric - Lescott - Mings - Williams
    Depay - Sterling - Hazard - Walcott - Mane
    Sakho - Kane

Interesting one! I can't say that I hate it.
What is the plan for Aguero, though? You would need to squeeze 3.5m out of midfield in order to do Kane -> Aguero, and then you are left with two budget attackers... not ideal.

I agree I have no plan for this at all apart from surgery. I do like this for what it is though. The mere fact you thought it was interesting amongst a sea of RMT's is nice.

The only "quick" way would be transfer hazard out for a budget mid (5m)and Sakho to Aguero.

        And 2 WCs.

So when are you going to use the All-out-attack chip to bring on your scummy 4.5m mid?

There is only one time during the season when you can sandwich two WCs together, and that's GW1.

I actually like this. Will know team lineups aswell, get on some GW1 bandwagons for value and get in Kun before his price starts rising.

May I also present you with a different all-out-attack-strategy? Let's say we get a DGW31/34, WC the week before, bring in eight decent attackers (you will have more TV by this point aswell), use the Bench Boost for the DGW with possibly 15 DGWers, then use the all-out-attack the following week while you still have the eight decent attackers. Should be easy to clean up, and you'll have more TV as mentioned which means you might not have to cripple your defence as much.

But I'm actually really tempted by the idea...

      It is not complete lunacy.
But gw2 is too early for the early wildcard. One gw is not enough to identify the budget bargains, or to see which attackers are overrated.
Plan to make it past gw3 before wildcard in.

I replied to this on the prior page, too. I think Kun plus Hazard, and even Ivan can work, but we might disagree on the perceived "compromises."

        Schmeichel, Butland
        Iva, Fonte, Williams, Huth, Franics
        Hazard, Cazorla, Chadli, Ki, Molumbu
        Giroud, Aguero, Wilson

This is my current draft. Perhaps you might think that Ki and Wilson are unacceptable given Hazard, Aguero, and Ivan. Not sure. I like having different players at different prices.

          • 12 Years

You really need Wilson to work out, chadli to at the very least duplicate what he did last year, and hope for one ki's better seasons. If you can get two of the three, there is a chance

Thanks (love your grav, btw). I don't see my draft as permanent, but the rationale is:

Chadli (could be Henderson, Milner, or tadic) is my 7m "slot." They are all good producers who, Imo, are undervalued.

Sorta same with Wilson and Ki, except for the price being 5.5m.

My thinking is that there are numerous producers at various price points. If I'm really really lucky, I nabbed the correct ones at the outset. If I'm wrong on one or more, I rotate to the peer player and ride that train. My strategy. Could be off. I hope not!

          • 11 Years

Nice draft. But I'd prefer Fabregas and Costa/Rooney to Hazard and Giroud. That's where the judgement call is I think.

With a bit of fiddling you could probably turn Wilson into Sakho as well. Soares for Fonte for example.

I also think you are better off with a Norwich or Sunderland defender than a Bournemouth one.

I didn't know you lived in NY by the way. Great City to visit, maybe not quite so great to live in? Unless you are extremely wealthy that is. 😕

Hahaha. Thanks. I grew up in the suburbs of New York in the 1960-1980 era, school, a little stint in San Fran, and have been living and working here in NYC since 1994. Love it. It is an amazing place to live. Wealthy? Well, things cost a lot more, but pay is commensurate. I'm uh er, also an old guy, in my mid 50s, and so with my sorta work tenure, and a wife with her own biz that does well, it is doable for us. We have two teenage kids living in a big apartment in NYC, and we love it.

I love the buzz of NY when I go there and I'm just guessing about the rest.

Like many visitors I haven't seen much more than Manhattan though.

                    A bit delayed....

Manhattan is where I work and live. Most work in Manhattan. Brooklyn is now something to see and do, but the city still revolves around Manhattan.

We love the buzz, too, and it's why we chose to live here. Lots of job ops as well. We go out a fair amount and love the restaurant choices, culture, etc. i guess we are just "city folk." I think it's pretty analogous to living in like London or Paris or some other big, cosmopolitan city.

I really like my team with both of them in, take a look:

        Schmeichel / Schwarzer
        Ivanovic / Cedric / Francis / O'Shea / Ward
        Hazard / Walcott / Mane / Ritchie / Fletcher
        Agüero / Benteke / Deeney

Personally think both Ritchie and Deeney will do good, but reckon you disagree with that?

I like Pelle. But Falcao is a guaranteed transfer. I don't like bringing in players I know for certain I will not keep. I like Wilson, but not unless he is next to two can't-miss forwards to lessen the risk of the punt.

I understand the love for Walcott as he is such an explosive FPL player but is it worth having him for that extra 0.5 over (Ozil/Ramsey/Cazorla) with the risk of him being benched within 2 GWs?

Not for me, Giroud will start and Wenger doesnt play two STs, Walcott has seemed to grab more goals playing ST. Stick him out on the wing and add that to not being naied on = hype train transfer for me

    Part 1

I am beginning to wonder if it is so vital so start the season with CHE representation.

I hadnt realized until recently that the WCs this year are such where one must be spent before January. I cannot imagine a more sensible time to use the early WC than after Week 4, with the window closing and an international break giving time for prices rises, it seems certain I will use it then.

So now I am building a team with the first 4 weeks in mind, and I am thinking after having Ivan or Azpil in every draft so far, and either Haz or Fabs...that i dont really need them. maybe for week 4, but i have a couple of transfers to spend before then and perhaps i use one to get one of them in for week 4.

Swansea at home is the best of the first three, and I am sure CHE are capable of doing damage. But the Swans are the same defense as last season and last season they were only damaged heavily against once. (Mind you it was v CHE, but also mind how the Swans did against ARS and MUN) After that for CHE, its away to MCI and WBA. On paper, those are probably 2 of the toughest fixtures CHE will have all season - away to MCI a top 5 difficult for sure and WBA a top 10 difficult one.

Another thing I am thinking is that ownership will already be high with CHE. Between that and the fixtures, I would think the chances are better that the prices of Haz or Ivan would fall rather than raise in the first three weeks. Even if they do well, say in week 1, with ownership already high and the next two fixtures away to MCI and WBA, one would imagine a price rise to be minimal (.1) at most.

Meanwhile, breaking down the first four weeks, and not feeling Chelsea would be vital (not to say they wont help those who invest, just not vital), one can build a strong squad from top to bottom and really hitting those first 4 weeks.

So now I am looking at ARS x 3, SOU x 3, and some interesting rotations. Hopefully this diatribe will be met with more than a simple "You have to have CHE". I simply wont believe that until week 4. If anything, I might take a punt on Moses, giving me a bit of coverage and should he not get the minutes early on I think he has earned, then it wont be long until I would WC anyway.

    Thoughts?

    Oh, and good evening. 🙂

If you are 100% on a WC GW4 plan then no, I don't think it is so vital.

This is exactly what I've done. Can you share your team? This is mine:

      Courtois Hennessey
      Monreal Cedric Jagielka Kaboul Baker
      Payet Mane Hazard Walcott Ibe
      Rooney Pelle Sakho

I've went for Courtois for chelsea defensive coverage as they can keep clean sheets anywhere and with high ownership expected I don't want to miss those points.
      Hazard again high ownership decision.
      Jagielka -> Cresswell after GW1

The rest I'm pretty settled on and I expect them to give me a very solid first four weeks.

        team is below

forgot about ibe - that is another great idea if WCing after 4 weeks, he should be safer for at least 3 games i would think.

im not a fan of planning a wk 2 transfer for a defender. rather set my defense for the 4 weeks and use FTs on attacking players

Not sold on early WC. I get the team value part but

Ideally you want to save your 2nd WC for a potential DGW, which lets assume it will happen post GW30.

That means that early WC has to last you GW4-30, about 26 weeks.

Is that manageable? Certainly, but not ideal.

In a perfect world, I'd say divide the season into thirds. That means one WC every 12 weeks or so.

      PreSeason WC GW 1-12 1st WC GW 12-24 2nd WC GW 25-38

      Does that make sense?

i see your idea, makes sense and i feel in seasons past that has been my philopsophy.

But the combo of window closed, intl break, long enough to see who's bringing it this season....its too much good reason. If anything id like to hold it for some kind of emergency but there wont be any DGWs in the first half - possible I guess but very slim chance.

well Mahrez over Payet week 1 anyway. Will definitely go Payet weeks 2 and 3 then play it by ear week 4

or i go moses over mahrez with same intent.

i worry about pelle too, so many options for SOU. But he has had a solid preseason, and if he looks pants week 1, i have an eye on sakho from week 2 on

        Cheers for the input
