In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

    Norwich

With pre-season now complete, here is a quick overall view of the Norwich team and form over pre-season. First, the likely line-up. The formation will be a 4-2-3-1 / 4-5-1 set up. The % figure is the nailed-on-ness of the player. (Please note Martin Olsson will miss the first game and likely the second. Once back, Olsson will play LB and Brady will play ahead of him.)

    GK: Ruddy 100%

    LB: Brady 100%
    CB: Bassong 100%
    CB: Martin 100%
    RB: Whittaker 80% / Wisdom 20%

    DM: Mulumbu 100% *
    DM: Dorrans 50% / Tettey 50%
    CM: Howson 100%
    LM: Johnson 100%
    RM: Hoolahan 70% / Redmond 30%

    STR: Jerome 60% / Grabban 40%

    * Mulumbu picked up a knock / foot injury late on against Brentford yesterday and will have a scan today. If he's out, Tettey will replace.

Over Pre-season, the best two players have been Mulumbu and Jerome. Jerome has looked really confident and finished most chances that have come his way. With reasonable fixtures, I can see Jerome getting amongst the goals in the first 7-8 matches. This is a big season for him and he looks keen to impress.

Brady will now be on the majority of set pieces and will pick up a fair few assists along the season although unfortunately classified as a midfielder and 5.5, a bit of a luxury pick whilst playing further back before Olsson gets back.

Redmonds game time will never be secure, so again, I would avoid until form appears. The rest of the midfield will share points, so no picks there.

The defence has limited appeal, with fullbacks likely to spend most time defending and Martin / Bassong both dont carry the set-piece threat a Morgan / Huth at Leicester do for example.

Lastly, note with the addition of Jake Kean from Blackburn, the combination of Ruddy and Rudd is no longer secure.

Overall then, I think Ruddy will be good for save points although don't expect too many clean sheets. Our games will likely be tight 2-1 type games. Jerome is a bit of a punt, but if you fancy a real cheap punt, I really think he could pick up a couple of goals early doors. Good Luck.

    My Picks:

    Ruddy 4.5m
    Jerome 5.0m

Surprised Mulumbu isn't one of your picks. 4.5 "nailed" (according to you) and seems to have the most attacking threat out of all other 4.5 mids. He scored 7 goals a few seasons back.

If Jerome can nail down a place, he's quite a bargain at 5m isn't it?

I think he's much more likely to play than this post suggests and it's not necessarily an either/or with Hoolahan - certainly in the games against weaker opposition (which are likely to be the ones where'll start your norwich players anyway) there's a possibility Neil will pick only 1 of Mulumbu and Tettey, and a bolder selection amongst the rest of the midfield.

Also Redmond is one of the few players in the first team reckoning with real pace. Grabban is another. If Jerome starts ahead of Grabban then I think that raises Redmonds chances too.

          (also a norwich fan btw)

Norwich fan here too, I expect Redmond to play 80% of the time seeing as he's one of our most dangerous attackers. Not sure why the OP has put him with shared gametime with Hoolahan since they play different roles (Redmond RW, Hoolahan AM). I fully expect to see them lining up together in many games.

I'm thinking about Hoolahan. AM and on penalties + freekicks it seems. How much is he going to play and is he the main man on set pieces (along with Brady now)?

not sure, he'll be benched for some games as we have so many midfielders in our squad and he's 33 now so can't expect him to play every match. Brady appears to have taken corners off him and as for FK's we have a number of players who take them like Johnson and Redmond. He's got Pens though. Personally I think you can do better for £5.5m

Very good to have this from someone that follows Norwich, thanks. Maybe you could answer a few extra enquiries?

I am a bit surprised at "don't expect too many clean sheets". I see Norwich as having the best defensive prospects of the three promoted teams, Neil tightened them up after arriving and is a pragmatic manager that will play a very solid formation with 2 DMs (Mulumbu/Tettey) in many games I think. Mulumbu is a player I really rate - not for FPL especially but as a footballer. Olsson is a player with good FPL prospects when fit again in my opinion. Am I over-estimating Norwich as a defensive unit?

Further forward, how many games do you think Hoolahan will play? He was rested a fair bit last season wasn't he? The comments on Jerome are interesting but he doesn't have a great PL record at all. I'm much more interested in Grabban - he could be the 4.5 forward I really need in order to play 4-4-2 if he gets established as 1st choice (which is what some Norwich fans believe will happen). Could you offer your thoughts on this?

      Thanks again.

Agreed about Neil. Managers are crucial to how their teams play. The new(ish) ones:

Neil - pragmatic, common sense, calm, his team won't be a pushover for anyone.
Howe - idealistic, naive, wedded to an attacking approach doomed to failure (even if glorious failure) and his team will probably take some hammerings before he learns.
Flores - chequered history, new manager and a practically new team, who knows?
McClaren - better as an attacking coach than a defensive one historically, Newcastle fans like attacking teams too. Defensively less attractive than in attack therefore.
Pardew - similar to McClaren and almost exactly the same comments apply. We have seen this already in his half season at Palace.
Ranieri - experienced, his teams generally know how to defend, pretty good at spotting players, any new ones Leicester sign will be worth a look.
Bilic - bit of a maverick, tactically flexible, was a centre half himself and knows how to coach a defence, will take a bit of time to see his approach at West Ham.
"Big Dick" Advocaat - renowned for coaching defensively sound teams, highly experienced, resourceful, Sunderland may do better than many imagine.

That's my take. If I'm looking for cheaper defenders I'm more interested in Norwich, Leicester and Sunderland than the others though Janmaat (Newcastle) and one or two West Ham could be interesting for good fixture runs when they have a chance of attacking and defensive points. I wouldn't touch Bournemouth or Palace under any circumstances.

If I'm looking for cheaper and medium range attackers it would be Palace, Newcastle, West Ham and Bournemouth that would interest me most. I wouldn't be that keen on Sunderland and Norwich assets.

Jerome had a very poor goal-scoring record last time he was in the Premier League. Why do you think he has become so prolific in the Championship and pre-season games? Has he become a better player, is it because of having a better manager and better players around him, or is it just because of facing weaker opposition?

And why is he only 60%? Is that because of injury doubts, or is Grabban a serious threat to his place in the team?

Can't decide whether to go 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. These are my options:

    A) Mane in a 3-5-2
    B) Pelle in a 3-4-3

Everything would stay the same with either Wilson (cheap forward) or Wanyama (cheap mid). Any opinions? I'd really like to have Mane but think 3-5-2 could be less flexible if I want to make changes.

Exactly. Fixed the goalie issue, good defense, amazing midfield, sure striker is sort of a problem but not so much with the midfield. If they get Benzema and a good CB, they're set.

I will say that I'd favor my Cityzens for a title win if we sign De Bruyne though. Right now Arsenal's midfield is what I think tilts it in their favor. But man, do we need some defensive signings at the moment. Looks too late now.

Not feeling the Rooney love this year, but at 10.5 he is a convenient placeholder for Aguero. That 2.5 dpifference can easily be made up by doing Pelle to Deeney, Depay to Ritchie, even Hazard to Fabregas etc.

Would much rather have Giroud and a stronger midfield but downgrading someone by 4.0 is virtually impossible.

Are many people taking hits or playing wildcard to get him in or not even bothered about him and playing it by ear? Before his demolition of Spurs last season he was hardly essential. I started without him and got by just fine.

If you had Sakho and Wilson up top would you

    a) Play them both every week in a 3-4-3 woth a 4.5 mid
    b) get a 5.0 mid and rotate between 3-5-2 and 3-4-3
    c) swap Wilson for Ighalo and get Ritchie in a 3-5-2 (or rotate between 3-4-3 and 3-5-2)

I've done it, but I've got a fairly cheap defense for it. My midfield (Mane, Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Ritchie) makes up for it though, and I could easily (though I won't) downgrade one for a better defense.

But they didn't like Manchester in the first place apparently. I guess that might have been the last drop.

It's been going on for 3 years, each player keeps their team from last season and can add new signings and players that are not taken to it

So slightly different question - do we think Wijnaldum from Newcastle will be fully nailed on (Till December) - I'm scouting for my draft league, so my requirements are slightly different.

    Nice Wenger interview on Ozil:

Wenger is challenging Özil, particularly in the scoring department. He thinks the 26-year-old should aspire to achieve more in the manner that Dennis Bergkamp did as a traditional No10 with an ability to combine the joy of the pass with the clinical shot. “I want more goals from him because he plays in that position and he is a good finisher,” Wenger says.

“But he doesn’t take enough chances. He is conscious of it and wants to do it now, so I am confident in that. Although his main aspect will always be in the intelligence of his passing and his creativity, he can finish better and we want from him 10 goals this season.”

This is good to see, hoping he will be more explosive this season. I think a Walcott/Özil double-up could well be the way to go.

Alright last seasons form seems to be the answer, thanks guys. I cannot remember Chdli having a good run last year but might have been over shadowed by Kane. Just checked, 11 goals and 6 assists is very good.
