Our members articles analysing last season are completed today with a review of West Ham’s performances. The Hammers entered 2014/15 in reasonable health, having finished 13th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, although they only gained 40 points and did flirt with the relegation zone before finally confirming their top-flight status.

Plenty of changes were made in both playing and coaching personnel at Upton Park last summer, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho brought in, while Teddy Sheringham joined up as an attacking coach. Cheikhou Kouyate and Aaron Cresswell were also signed, while Carl Jenkinson and Alex Song moved to the Hammers on season-long loans.

In this members article, we asses the main goal threats and creators in Sam Allardyce’s final year at the helm and also compare the team’s attacking numbers to the previous year.

    Liverpool pre-season round up
    Thai All Stars 0-4 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Markovic, Sakho, Lallana, Origi
    • Assists: Teixeira (2), Henderson (2)

    Brisbane Roar 1-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Lallana, Milner
    • Assists: Milner, Henderson

    Adelaide United 0-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Milner, Ings
    • Assists: Ibe, Clyne

    Malaysia XI 1-1 Liverpool:
    • Goal: Ibe
    • Assist: Origi

    HJK Helsinki 0-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Origi, Coutinho
    • Assists: Milner (2)

    Swindon 1-2 Liverpool:
    • Goals: Benteke, Ojo
    • Assists: Teixeira, Toure

    Formations used:
    • 4-2-3-1
    • 4-diamond-2
    • 4-3-3

The quality of the oppositions this pre-season was underwhelming to say the least but what’s impressed me:
    • The high press for large parts of the game, from the strikers and midfielders. Notably from Henderson, Milner and Ings.
    • The fluidity and understanding of Henderson and Milner, it seems their partnership has already formed.
    • The width provided by Ibe and Clyne on the right – it’s added a different dimension to our style of play.

    Be wary…:
    • James Pearce from the Liverpool Echo said that Skrtel—Sakho is the first choice CB partnership, but went back on his word yesterday and insists that Rodgers favours Lovren.
    • Hendo vs Milner could be a case of them taking turns to outscore one another in fantasy football terms
    • Ibe has been brilliant, the standout player, but he isn’t nailed. Same goes for Lallana.

    FPL prospects:
    • Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Henderson, Milner, Coutinho, Benteke, when fit, are all nailed.
    • Gomez has had the nod at left back over Moreno and BR’s comments suggest he may well start the season. He comes in at 4.5m and offers a cheap way into Liverpool’s defence.
    • Henderson/Milner. Take your pick. Both are consistent and reliable. Both shared set piece duties as well. (Note: the likes of Coutinho, Firmino will also take corners).
    • I *THINK* Henderson is on penalties. If not, then Benteke is. We won’t know for sure until Liverpool get one.
    • Ibe at 5m could be a punt worth taking as a 5th midfielder. By no means nailed, but certainly a threat going forward and seems to be in favour for the short term at least.
    • Benteke at 8.5m is good value for money, in my opinion. (Considering Kane’s and Giroud’s respective prices). I also think he’ll start gameweek 1, we’ll have to look out for BR’s comments in the press conference.

I’ll post a predicted line up for the Stoke game towards the end of the week. Hope this was informative. 

      Predicted line-up:

      - Bib theory seems to have been ditched, finally!
      - BR gave very little away in the press conference.
      - Allen is out for 3-4 weeks though. Flanagan to be back by Christmas. Sturridge to be back for September.
      - Milner confirmed as vice captain.
      - This is only a prediction, so could be wrong.

      4-2-3-1.

      ----------------Mignolet
      --Clyne---Skrtel--Lovren---Gomez.
      ---------Henderson--Milner------------
      ------Ibe------Coutinho-----Lallana---
      ----------------Benteke-------------------

Of course Coutinho may miss out on a starting place for a 3rd CM, or Lovren for Sakho. But as things stand, I think this is the team for Sunday against Stoke.

    The BAPs are in!....

    Ox 3
    Kosc 2
    Mert 1

    ARSENAL
Koscielny was a beast in the game with 19 CBI (16 clearances, 2 blocks & 1 interception) which was just shy of the whole Chelsea team combined (24). Mert in comparison got 8 CBI but his passing bonus edged the 1 BP over the full backs. Oxlade got the winning goal in a 1-0 game so was always likely to pick up something. Walcott misses out as the 12 BPS for the assist matches that of a defender clean sheet, but he didn't pick up BPS points for the defensive dirty work.

    Full BPS:

    Cech 23

    Bellerin 21
    Kosc 29
    Mert 27
    Monreal 25

    Coquelin 4
    Cazorla 11
    Ramsey 15
    Ox 30
    Ozil 12

    Walcott 17
    ------
    Giroud 1
    Arteta 3
    Gibbs 2

    CHELSEA
Stats wise, Hazard had a shocker of a game and got the lowest rating on whoscored and a BPS score of just 5. Courtois made 5 saves which meant he gained 10 BPS, putting him 2nd overall for Chelsea BPS. Perhaps this season goalkeepers who manage 8 or 9 saves may pick up bonus even without clean sheets as that would bring them to around 25-30 BPS in total. Matic was busy in his deeper role for Chelsea so picked up 22 BPS. Ivan was the worse BPS performer in the Chelsea defence as he had a lower pass percentage (only one under 80%) and had two shots off target.

    Full BPS:

    Courtois 16

    Ivanovic 7
    Cahill 12
    Terry 13
    Azpi 11

    Ramires 11
    Matic 21
    Willian 12
    Fabregas 14
    Hazard 5

    Remy 1
    -----
    Oscar 4
    Falcao -3
    Zouma 6
    Moses 2

    Stats from
    http://www.whoscored.com/Matches/956052/LiveStatistics/England-Community-Shield-2014-2015-Arsenal-Chelsea
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/33667216

Just a note that 'Recovery' stats unavailable so BPS is not included for them but I doubt it would make that much difference. Successful tackles not defined so I have just used a rough average value from last season of 50% for total tackles. I assume 'Open Play Crosses' are successful crosses as well so 1 BPS for each of those.

I am under the impression that the following are the most nailed on (points potential also) defenders ( for < 5.0) from these teams.. correct me if I am wrong

    Swansea : Naughton
    West Ham : Jenkinson
    Watford : Prodl
    Bournemouth : Francis
    Leices : Huth

Fernandez and Williams are 100% in the middle. Fernandez is much more of a threat from corners but Williams tends to get in the BPS. Naughton is definite first choice also, but we have more cover there so slightly more likely to have the occasional rest I suppose.

but on another day he would of got two and people would be saying he is must... fab tempting though saving 2.5 mill could be useful, also fab was more forward today with ramires playing, will he be fielded further back...

Right after tinkering everyday the whole of last week I'm off on my holidays tomorrow so this is the final draft. Had the Ox in before his goal today, so happy with him, he is looking good.

Rip apart/advice/thumbs up or thumbs down...thoughts please ??

    Butland/ruddy

    mertasacker/fonte/jenkinson/Frances/ o'shea

    Barkley/Oxlaine/Ritchie/Hazard/Sinclair

    Rooney /Sakho/pele

6mil ITB - pele to Kan and after GW1 Barkley to Milner

Your mids, hazard aside, are very very weak which will cost you. Ox had one good game today, Barkley not good enough. Sinclair is a good 5th mid though and Ritchie is a punt that many are going for including myself but you'll need better cover in case it doesn't work

Way too much itb. Buff up barkley, ox or sinclair (probably barkley given evertons terrible fixures gw 2 +)

Not sure if Ox is nailed even after today's performance, but he could prove a great gamble. That said, personally I wouldnt use an arsenal slot on a player that isnt 100% unless it isnt wally or bellerin. Defense looks very solid though.

Cuz use money itb to barkley > milner now then ox > santi

    RMT

    Ruddy (Butland)

    Cedric Azpi Huth (Francis Williams)

    Hazard Depay Ozil Mane Ritchie

    Rooney Pelle (Ighalo)

Majority went for Kane & Mane over Pelle & Sterling which I find strange.

Pelle is the focal point of Saints attack. Kane feels like chasing last years points, and while I'm sure he'll bang in a few again, he doesn't have the advantage of being the surprise talent like last time around.

Sterling would also be my only City player at present, and seems the cheapest route into their attack right now (besides Yaya of course). Mane is great, I'd actually like to fit him in but with Cedric and Pelle it would be too reliant on Soton. Thats my rationale.

I've got Mane and Pelle but out of those two options definitely Pelle and Sterling for me

Agreed. Like I said, would love to have Mane but have Cedric too and don't want to overdo it. Great player though.

I'm actually taking the risk with Cedric too because they had a great defense last year and not bad attack so I'm hoping they can reproduce again

Playing over 1000 minutes more than Mane Pelle managed a single goal and two assists more. Mane's goals counting for 1 extra point he actually outscored Pelle (G+A) by one point

    Thoughts about:

    1) Walcott rotation risk. Is he worth the gamble?
    2) Bojan nailed and good pick?
    3) Huth nailed?

    Cheers 🙂
