Last Friday, Rickie Lambert put an end to his disappointing stint at Liverpool by signing a two-year deal with West Bromwich Albion. Discussing the English striker’s arrival at The Hawthorns, Tony Pulis talked up his capacity to augment the Baggies’ squad both on and off the pitch:

“He did exceptionally well at Southampton and probably feels he deserved more games at Liverpool. But it’s not just on the pitch that he will be important, but off the pitch too. He’s a great lad and in Saido we have a wonderful talent, along with other youngsters we have. We hope the way Rickie conducts himself and how he acts will be good for him [Berahino] and our other young players. You cannot have enough role models. He’s been brought up through the lower leagues. When you get the chance to work down there you want to get the chance to claim everything you can – that ambition and drive remains and I hope we see the full benefits of that and I hope the other players do too.”

The History

Born in Merseyside, Lambert joined Liverpool’s youth academy at ten years of age but was released five years later. The striker then made the switch to Blackpool at the age of 16, eventually making his senior debut against Wrexham in the third tier of English football. Having notched just three appearances in the 1999/2000 season, Lambert was again released that November.

After four months in the wilderness as a free agent, Lambert teamed up with fourth-tier outfit Macclesfield Town in March 2001. He racked up nine appearances across the rest of the 2000/2001 campaign, before tallying ten goals in 40 outings the following term.

Stockport County came calling in the summer of 2002, landing the physical frontman in a £300,000 deal. Lambert’s debut season harvested just two goals in 28 league appearances, but the next year proved more profitable, with 12 strikes in 40 outings. He then made the switch to Rochdale halfway through the 2004/05 campaign, chalking up 28 goals and 15 assists in 64 appearances during his stint at Spotland.

Lambert continued to ply his trade in the Football League with Bristol Rovers, notching 21 goals and three assists in his first two seasons. With 29 strikes in 45 outings, he ended the 2008/09 campaign as the joint-top scorer in League One, courting interest from Southampton.

Lambert hit the ground running at St Mary’s Stadium, amassing a whopping 31 goals and 13 assists during the 2009/10 season. He continued to post eye-catching attacking hauls throughout his next four years with the south coast club, accruing 106 goals and 62 assists in just 207 league outings. This paved the way for a move to boyhood club Liverpool, where he was afforded just seven starts by Brendan Rodgers, producing two goals and a couple of assists in just 943 league minutes.

Handed his first international call-up at the age of 31 in 2013, Lambert has scored three times in 11 appearances for the Three Lions, with his last outing as a sub in September last year.

The Prospects

After falling out of favour for both club and country under Rodgers, Lambert is desperate to make up for lost time at the Hawthorns. A somewhat emotional Lambert admitted he’s determined to resurrect his career and refuses to write off a return to the England fold ahead of next year’s Euro 2016 tournament:

“I’ve got a lot of feeling, to be honest. I’m not going to get into it right now. I feel as if I’ve got a point to prove to myself. That’s always the biggest drive – yourself – and it will carry on being that way. It is only two years ago that I scored against Scotland. I scored 15 goals and then 13 goals for Southampton and obviously it is over a year since I did that but I have just got to get back to that now.”

Lambert certainly looks the ideal target man to lead the line for Pulis. As we saw last season, the Baggies boss was unconvinced by both Brown Ideye and Victor Anichebe after taking up the helm in Gameweek 21 – the duo were afforded eight and six starts respectively, whereas Saido Berahino was named in the first XI in 16 of Pulis’ 18 league matches in charge. Although there’s plenty of speculation still surrounding Berahino’s future – with the likes of Spurs, Newcastle and Manchester City all linked with a bid, Lambert looks favourite to start regardless.

Pulis is likely to roll out his default 4-4-2 for the season ahead, though the Baggies boss also utilised a 4-5-1 on occasion last term, with Berahino shifted to the flank to accommodate a more robust presence as the lone striker. Lambert can certainly fill that role perfectly and has the top-flight history to barge past Anichebe and Ideye in the pecking order.

The new boy needed no time to make an impact last week. Just hours after signing, Lambert was fielded alongside Berahino up front and showed little signs of rustiness by netting twice on his debut.

Disregarding the previous campaign by virtue of his paucity of starts, Lambert’s attacking returns (13 goals and ten assists) during the 2013/14 season for Southampton highlighted his dual threat. Only Luis Suarez, Olivier Giroud and Wilfried Bony fired more shots than Lambert, while only the Uruguayan managed more assists (12) among all forwards. Moreover, Lambert ranked third in term of key passes (53), which bodes well for the Baggies considering they placed 18th for key passes (311) – ahead of just Aston Villa (306) and Sunderland (304) – in the previous campaign.

The fact that West Brom ranked second-bottom for attempts last term underlines the relative impotence of their attack and might discourage investment in Lambert as a result. Nonetheless, the former Saint’s ability from dead-ball situations – both free-kicks and penalties – should boost his points potential, with the veteran near-impeccable spot-kick record likely to see him step up ahead of Berahino.

Ultimately, though, a schedule which pits the Baggies against City, Chelsea and Southampton in the first five rounds of fixtures may initially deter many from investing. With the likes of Bournemouth, Villa, West Ham and Leicester offering similarly-priced alternatives with kinder opening matches, Lambert may stay on the Fantasy periphery for now, though if he can replicate his Southampton form when the fixtures smile kinder around Gameweek 6, a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game may well represent good value.

Haz was good but he hasn't that much better than Costa last season. Points per game where pretty similar (don't have exact stat) and Fab matched him up until Jan.
Benteke is a finisher but Liverpool have some tough games and the pressure is really on at this stage in the season. Fab and Costa is a safe bet.

I quite like the defence for the most part

Of course I could also dump Butland or Sinclair and that's Cedric to you know who

            That's also possible

            SUN/BOU/LEI is a lovely 3 way

The thing with that 1.5 is I'm only 1.0 away from either Kun or Benteke so a quick downgrade of Theo to say Hendo or Chadli and I can get Kun without an issue and possibly upgrade Cedric to a City defender if needed

Benteke is the real quandry for me mate

not sure where to spend it

I could also swap Cedric down to Gomez and use him in rotation

That gives 2.0, and Sakho can become Tekkers?

But then I think I'd like 1.0 ITB to swap Wilson to Sakho for GW2

    ### General Tactic for the full FPL season? ###

I'm pretty new to FPL and have just done one full FPL season, even though I've played a few other fantasy games throughout the last 10 years. FFS helped pretty much last year even if I just managed to get a top 80k placement. But what's mostly on topic here now and during the season is very very player oriented, which of course this mostly is all about.

But few articles and few comments discuss "the general tactic" to get a good result over a full season.
    - For example keep guessing on "the next bandwagon" will probably be much more hit and miss than just jumping on the train on the big hitters as it becomes clear who they might be.
    - Do you captain the obvious choice or take a chance on the lesser chosen one to diversify and get points on the so called template?

If you just want to get as much points as possible. Do you pick a GW1-team that consist of as much "secure points" (mid-priced players from top teams) possible, weighted on the early fixtures. And as soon as it clears, follow the bandwagon with 10-14 of your 15 players, to "follow the pack", and the last few players to diversify and and the ones you think might outperform the template?

If you answer the post, please tell your best rankings after a full FPL-season to give credit to your tactic.

My own best guess is that the season is way to long to take too many chances on both your picks and captains. Am I on the right track?

for captains look at the poll if its a runaway winner then go for him or at very minimum have him in your team
if theres no obvious choice(less than 20%) then this is the time to gamble
      OR 300 last season

I just missed out on top 10k last season. Truly awful captain choices cost me big time. I picked my highest scoring player just 5 times and that was Aguero 3 times and Kane twice. There were some almost impressively bad choices such as Sterling (1 point) over Costa (17 points) early in the season when Costa was an injury doubt.

Everyone tries to pick a differential but sometimes just having the right big players is enough. To do well you probably need some decent picks (Siggy and Downing at the right times last season) and you can't miss out on the big players at form times (Kane, Aguero and Suarez 2 years ago) but nobody has Hazard, Sanchez, Costa, Aguero and Rooney so sometimes the big players alone can be enough.

Captain choice is as simple as pick who you think will get the most points. I tried everything last season from polling friends, flipping a coin and using the captain poll on here and nothing works. Just go with your gut (unless it is telling you Lukaku or a non Kane Spurs player) and accept that you can't get it right every time.

        • 10 Years

Yeah, well, that's pretty much my point. You can't get the guess right enough over the season, so if you're not behind and desperately need to get points on you friends in your league I guess you ALWAYS pick the "statistically" correct (and maybe boring) choice? Last year, that would mean the one with the best fixture of Sanchez, Kane, Haz, Aguero you have in your team, most of the time. Chance are the others are taking chances more often and in the long run makes to many bad decisions?

        1. Leeroy357
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member
          • 11 Years
          10 years, 6 months ago

Actually, more often than not the reason I got my choice wrong is that I picked based on fixtures over form. If a top player (Sanchez, Haz, Aguero, Costa, Kane) was playing a bad defence at home I struggled not to pick them when really I should have picked the guy on a great run. Sanchez very much scored in patches, as did Kane. The goals were predictable and not based on opposition, some players are so good the opponent almost becomes irrelevant. Hazard was very consistent and therefore a good captain option but if I remember correctly he never scored a brace. His highest score in a gameweek was around 12 points or so (as far as I can remember) which means you could never lose big by not picking him whereas Aguero and Kane could score a hat trick at the right time.

I guess my point is that fixtures can be useful but you are more likely to go wrong picking the easiest game than the picking the form player. When on form, the very top players can and will score big against anyone but sometimes they won't, it happens.

Also have faith in your other players. If you are on this website then odds you are spend more time on the game than minileague rivals. Anyone can pick up Kane after 4 consecutive goals but not everyone saw the Tadic big haul last season or had Siggy from the start. If your rival has captained Aguero at home to Bournemouth, don't think that means you must go for Costa. Pick up the points elsewhere with a good squad. If captains didn't exist I reckon I would easily have been top 3k, a good squad goes a long way.

A big error I made last season was that i rarely looked at what the top managers had in their team. I went with my gut and the statistics I had available aside from looking at a lot of matches.

More often looked at the top managers on the individual game weeks, but I guess FPL is not so much about being top scorer every game week, but more about consistency. Better being 14/15-Mourinho than 14/15-Wenger in FPL if you will. 🙂

People are put off Sunderland players because quite rightly we were very poor last season, with limited attacking threat. If M'Villa and Fer transfers go through in the next couple days as expected, we could put out a first XI as follows (we're also chasing a new striker):

    Pants
    Jones Coates Kaboul PVA
    Cattermole M'Villa Fer
    Johnson Defoe Lens

I'd say that's a big improvement and we should create a lot more. I think Defoe and Lens are good for the first few fixtures, and Johnson could flash back up on our radars too (he's likely to be on pens). Coates would be my pick of the £4.5m def as o'shea might start ahead of Kaboul vs Leicester due to Kaboul fitness.

Fingers crossed this is the year we finally pull clear of the relegation scrap.

He'll be used to a lot and can play on wing or behind strikers. Just don't think he'll ever be a regular starter.

Whats your thoughts about Lens as a fpl prospect?

        10 years, 6 months ago

Lens has looked good in the two pre-season games he played. Fast, skillful and likes to shoot, can put in a decent cross as well. I think given our fixtures and the fact he's listed as a mid, could def be worth an early season punt.

He was always gonna be a mid though was he not.. similar position as Sanchez/Hazard/Sterling etc as a wide man in a front 3?

            • 15 Years
            10 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, but he can play as an out and out striker too, so there was always the worry FPL would side that way. That would have made him redundant as an option, but now he could be great value.

Well you literally couldn't get much lower. We can't afford another relegation scrap as we will drop. Amazed we've managed to keep in the league given how poor we've been and league positions going into final stretch of games.

My worry with Coates is that O'Shea and Kaboul could be the CBs.

I've thought long and hard about it, and I just can't see Coates being dropped from the start. He was outstanding for us towards the end of last season (one of the main reasons we stayed up), and was one of our priority signings. Advocaat always speaks highly of him and if anything it will be Kaboul who has to fight his way into the team, not coates.

I'm leaning toward a WC during GW4 or 5 and considering 2 Sunderland defenders due to those early fixtures and decent defence for the price. Who would you say is the first choice RB at least for the short term? Jones or Matthews?

Coates in Copa America did notfare well and headcoach Tavares did not use him ; been like that for Uruguay for a while. Hope advocaat is right if he has said that.

Will certainly monitor Lens, but comes in a bit too dear to be in my team from the start as a rather untried asset in fpl.
What's your take on Coates game time, is it too risky to start with him?

See above on coates. Fair enough about lens. If he scores in GW1 people will be scrambling to get him. Can see pros and cons of going with him for the start.

Thanks Sess - I think I'll probably start with more expensive and proven 4th mid e.g Hendo, or cheaper e.g Ritchie. Then jump on bandwagon if it starts rolling

sessi thanks for that, on coates right now from your boys, but tempted by lens a 4th mid or defoe as 3rd choice striker, could you see defoe not playing? surely at 5.5 with lens and johnson either side and fixtures he is better then the likes of 5.5 in wilson and deeney. thoughts?

    Ruddy / Butland
Baines / Alderweireld / van Aanholt / Martin / Soares

    A) Hazard - Pelle - Ritchie
    B) Fabregas - Rooney - Mane

So here it is. Hazard's game this Sunday made me wonder if he is going to prove a slow starter this season also.
Having Fabregas rather would give me two better choices in Rooney and Mane imo.
    Thoughts?

Pool's fixtures are not that great IMO (bar GW2) and we still don't know how he'll fit

But he's 8.5 and nailed on up front for a top 5 or 6 team

Walcott, Ozil or Cazorla? My team has no arsenal attacking players in it and im trying to remedy that.

Ive got so many different options im messing around with. I was using Ighalo as my 3rd option for a while but not sure.

    Basically,

    a) Walcott/Cazorla/Ozil and Defoe
    or
    b) Ritchie and Pelle?
