The Fantasy Football Scout Dugout FC League draft night is now just over 24-hours away.

For those who missed our introductory article, Dugout FC is a new draft-based Fantasy game that’s totally free to play and allows you to join or create a custom league, made up of multiple divisions.

There’s full promotion and relegation between the divisions and the game itself is driven by an Opta-based scoring system so advanced, Dugout FC are convinced it’s one of the best around.

Be sure to soak up our article for a full rundown of the features and why you should get involved.

It’s not too late to sign up and take part in draft night.

This takes place on Thursday at 9pm UK time.

You’ll either have to be online and in your division’s draft room for that time, or you’ll need to have set up your shortlist, which will be used by the automated system to select your squad.

Tactics for Draft Night

Dugout FC’s draft system is classified as a “snake” draft.

The team with the first overall pick selects, followed by the team with the second pick, third pick, and so on. At the end of the first round, the team that just drafted (with the last pick in the first round) will have the first pick in the second round and the round continues in reverse order.

There are ten teams in a division and with 18 players required in each squad, there will be 18 rounds of picks before each of the teams are complete.

During the draft, you’ll have two minutes to claim your pick before your shortlist kicks in and selects a player on your behalf.

Preparation for draft night is key and the first step, aside from forming your shortlist in Dugout FC, is to form a ranking sheet for the players on your list.

This will structure your targets in order of preference – the bigger your list, the more you’ll have to turn to on the night as the two minutes ticks down on your selection.

The obvious tactic is to work down your list, prioritising your high rank players, although there will be times when you’ll consider reacting to the selections of others, perhaps promoting a player in your ranking list or even bringing in a new player. Fundamentally, however, for at least the first three or four rounds, it’s a good idea to stick to your decided ranks in order to start your squad with a foundation of players that you have some confidence in. After that, you can consider taking risks.

Your first round pick is crucial and, while it’s tempting to target midfied heavy-hitters such as Eden Hazard or Alexis Sanchez from the off, you may be better advised to address your strikers first.

While Hazard and Sanchez are set to be the top scoring midfielders on show, it’s worth considering that, the gap between those two and the likes of David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Santi Cazorla may only be 30-40 points.

However, the gap between the leading striker and the chasing pack could be far greater. Sergio Aguero amassed 242 points in Dugout FC last season, the fifth ranked striker – Diego Costa – scored 86 fewer points.

In a nutshell, the drop-off in midfield between the very top ranks and those in the top ten was lower than that in the top ten strikers. Therefore, booking yourself a proven goalscorer could be the most viable tactic for the opening round.

With rotation and early season teamsheets still in transition, it also stands to reason that you are more likely to be pick up worthy free agents in midfield.

Player Versatility

Having said all that, it should be noted that Dugout FC have introduced the concept of versatility into the game. Hazard, for example, can be deployed either as a midfielder or a forward in your formation. You should take a note of these players as, securing an asset who can fulfil a number of roles offers flexibility and can help cover injuries.

Note that, Hazard and other versatile players, will score differently depending on where you play them: the Belgian won’t earn a point for a clean sheet whilst playing up front but will be more likely to earn a points for accurate passes, since he’ll only need to complete 30 per point earned.

The Scoring Model

Be sure to check in on Dugout FC’s scoring model to be clear on the match events at play and how these are applied, in particular, across the positions.

The scoring is finely balanced between full-backs and centre-backs but you’ll want to either target dominant defenders who win a raft of aerial balls, or forward-thinking full-backs who provided a ready supply of accurate crosses.

The criteria for midfielders is pretty clear – aside from goals and assists, those who make 40+ accurate passes, accompanied with chances created, should be high on your list of priorities.

However, given that there are points earned for fouls won, you should also factor in those players who frequently run at opponents and draw fouls – again, Hazard and Sanchez spring to mind, but there are others.

While Hazard suffered the most fouls (he was impeded every 31 minutes), Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish surpasses this frequency – he was fouled every 26 minutes on his introduction to Tim Sherwood’s lineup. Equally, Sadio Mane should be a target in this respect – he was fouled every 29 minutes for Southampton.

Up front, it’s clearly all about goals and shots, although again, big centre forwards who also draw fouls and who link play to complete 30 passes per match, offer some handy supplementary points.

Dugout FC’s player list offers a full rundown of last season’s points to offer guidance on your draft night priorities. This, combined with the statistics in our members area, should help you form your ranking list ahead of tomorrow evening.

The Fantasy Football Scout League

Once again, if you’re yet to sign up, it’s not too late.

We’re running a Fantasy Football Scout League which you’ll find when scanning leagues. Just click for an invite and you’ll be added to one of our divisions ahead of Thursday’s draft.

Good luck to all on draft night. Let’s see if I can’t snatch Aleks Kolarov.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Pretty big defense huh.

1B. I think Cedric is amazing value at 5.0M. That said, out of those I'd go B as I don't know any 4.0M that are close to nailed. Considered Mert over Kos?

2A, I think Sakho is a proven PL performer (albeit not over too many games, but still).

was looking at playing the aoa chip in week one, WC after GW4, but looking at the fixtures AOA in gw4 looks to be a better bet - aguero will be back then as well
still WC after 4 for price rises

    thoughts?

All, AOA does is play your 5th midfielder and 3rd striker. Unless you've got a set of 4.5m and 4.0m defenders, better to wait until later in the season to know which cheap midfielders/strikers are worth using the chip to play for.

        aye, know that
but with a GW4 wildcard can have cheapo defenders set up to start the season & have more funds in the milfs/ strikers
unlikely to be able to repeat that later in the year as will have a balanced squad able to cope with injuries etc

I see it better for either fielding a cheap DGWer alongside your heavy hitters or when you're defence is in tatters but transfers being used elsewhere personally but it doesn't sound like a bad tactic.

    Just to stress...

We are carrying out all FFS league auctions on Thursday 9pm UK time.

If your Division shows otherwise (e.g.: 6pm tonight) it will be changed.

Apologies for this - we've no idea why they changed to an earlier date or time.

We don't have the resource to manually shift draft night times to other times by division.

All drafts will be Thursday 9pm.

I'm guessing everyone in my division will be in the same position but people aren't going to be happy if they log on just in time for the draft tomorrow and they have no shortlist. I know this isn't the fault of FFS but it's going to ruin the experience for a lot of people.

    Captaincy Analysis GW1:

    1. Eden Hazard (SWA)

From the looks of things, Hazard is likely to be the most popular choice this week as he was the best player in the league last season. Alothough Chelsea havent had the best pre-season’s and a loss against Arsenal at the weekend wasn’t the best confidence boost going into the start of the season. However, there’s no doubt that Chelsea and Eden Hazard will want to bounce back and look to get off to a bang this season. They do play Swansea this week, which Chelsea do have a good record against (5-0 and 4-2 wins last season), but either way, we all know Hazard is fixture proof!

    2. Santi Cazorla (WHU)

It’s a hard to pick who will be the best midfielder for Arsenal with a lot of world class talent along the middle, but we’ve chosen Santi this week, as he is bang on start the first fixture. With Alexis Sanchez out due to his international participation, Santi could play in a more attacking role which may see some good fantasy football returns. They play West Ham, who have defensively been quite poor in pre season, which could see Santi Cazorla and Arsenal could get off to a dream start this weekend!

    3. Wayne Rooney (TOT)

Wayne Rooney is now seeing himself play in the position he has always wanted too, up front. With the departure of van Persie and Falcao, he can now be viewed as the only decent striker in the United ranks. The England captain is nailed on to start, and you’d think that he’ll be banging them in this week, as he’s in a fantastic team, which consists of the likes of Depay and Schweinsteiger! They take on Spurs in the opening fixture of the season, which historically has been goals galore!

    Differential – Raheem Stering (WBA)

The £50 million midfielder has quickly adapted to his new team and has scored and/or assisted in every single game he has played in during Manchester City’s pre-season tour. He looks to be a good buy for fantasy football managers and he could even play as striker with the absence of Aguero. However, the team they play, West Bromwich Albion, had a solid back four last year and even got 15 clean sheets in the 2014/15 season. This defensive solidarity could mean that Sterling will struggle to get a goal, but I wouldn’t bet against it!

    Gamble – Graziano Pelle (NEW)

Pelle has had a fantastic pre season so far and with Jay Rodriguez back fit and ready to go, they could partner well this season. Southampton take on Newcastle, who have been poor pre-season and if they start off like they played last year, Pelle could find himself on the scoresheet this weekend!

Cazorla would get 90 minutes consistently last season, very rarely taken off like the others. With 1/2 corners, set pieces and pens in his locker and an extra 0.5m itb, think it's a no brainer myself

That was last season, we already saw Cazorla on the wing in the charity shield, and when Wilshere comes back there is another one competeing with Cazorlas place.

Nice, 4 out of 5, no Pelle for me. Rooney is my choice, TOT playing in Germany tonight then fly back and then upto Manchester for 12.45 sat kick off is absolutely ridiculous

Hi Guys. Felling ok about this. Please RMT and inevitably make me change my mind. Included some notes.

    Ruddy (Schmei)
    Kos Cedric Huth Azi (Francis)
    Mane Fab Wally (King, Payet)
    Lukaku © Benteke Rooney

    Cheeky Lukaku punt GW1
    GW2: Luk-->Sakho

Wild card GW 4 bring in Sterling Aguero

    Notes:
Taking the Hazard Risk because of the tricky fixtures (Fab will do for now. Corners and assists)
Benteke will dismantle the newly attacking Stoke and is C for GW2
West Ham and SOT great fixtures (Payet in the hole is a must have)
Bench is strong enough for any GW1 Flyers

    Comments?

What are people's thoughts on the Europa hitting the leafue form of West Ham and Southampton?

Briefly looking at the history, teams in general tend to suffer if new to the European competitions.

Swansea, Newcastle, Stoke, Everton and Fulham have all seen a dramatic drop compared to their performances the previous season. Could Southampton and West Ham continue the trend?

      West Ham probably.

I think the two (Europa + EPL slide) go hand in hand. I'm certainly intending to ship out my Europa players if there's a sniff of performance drift.

Personally don't think so. I don't think he's a natural number 9 and goes deep far too often. People use the argument of 'he has to score goals', which I don't buy into. Having said that, he's in my team purely for a lack of other options and will make way as soon as Aguero is fit.

I don't understand the Walcott isn't nailed part - why isn't he? where is the evidence ?

I get he will get subbed off alot at 60/70min mark but the not nailed talk can literally apply to any of the arsenal mids as they're all equally as creative really.

I think everyone is saying Walcott isn't nailed to justify themselves leaving a potential big hitter out..

Obviouslly this is just my opinion so any thoughts / evidence is welcomed 🙂

You can only afford so many big hitters so need to justify picking one over another.

He isn't nailed in that he needs to score goals. But he is in form and is scoring goals.

Now way Arsenal just upped his wages for him to sit on the bench while he is in scoring form.

    7. Sergio AGUEROOOOO

people say he isnt nailed because its the truth, hes not a natural striker, giroud is and wenger likes giroud so as soon as walcott isnt cutting it he will get subbed and not start the next game, and thats if he even starts GW1 which he may well not do
