Our final instalment of this week’s Watchlist articles which offer player recommendations for the next four to six Gameweeks, sees us cast our eye over the forwards. With concerns over the availability of Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa ahead of the opening weekend, Wayne Rooney earns the top spot in our initial rankings, while the newly promoted sides are represented by Callum Wilson and Troy Deeney.

After spending much of last season playing in midfield, Wayne Rooney will once again lead the line for Man United this season. That fact, along with the favourable start (TOT, avl, NEW, swa) handed to the Red Devils, has convinced us to promote the United skipper as the leading forward on our Watchlist. Rooney scored 27 goals the last time he was the featured centre-forward at Old Trafford in the 2011/12 campaign, and with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin brought in to shore up the midfield, the belief is the former Everton front man can purely focus on scoring goals. Available at 10.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, that looks more than fair for the leading attacker from a side expected to finish in the top four.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle enjoyed a reasonably successful first campaign in England, scoring 12 league goals, although the Italy international did go 14 matches without scoring at one point. The former Feyenoord striker did take advantage of a friendly fixture list at the start of last season though, and with a similarly favourable opening schedule (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN) this time around, the 8.0-priced forward could hit the ground running once again. Granted, he will have some extra competition this season from the fit-again Jay Rodriguez and summer signing Juanmi but with seven goals to his name over the summer, he looks in red-hot form.

Although Harry Kane has had a short pre-season due to his commitments for the England Under-21s this summer, last season’s breakout star remains the main man at White Hart Lane and should be able to thrive with some reasonable fixtures (STO, lei, EVE, sun, CPL) after Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford. His 21 Premier League goals were inevitably going to see Kane’s price rise for this season and, although the Tottenham striker now sets us back 9.5 in FPL, he could still represent decent value if he can replicate last year’s heroics.

Having only returned to training for Manchester City on July 29 after representing Argentina in this summer’s Copa America, and with a difficult home fixture against Chelsea in Gameweek 2, Sergio Aguero only slots in at number four in our rankings. The expectation is that last season’s leading marksman will only make a brief cameo appearance in Monday’s trip to West Brom as a best case scenario – all the more so given that he’s struggling with illness – so, at a price of 13.0 in FPL, it is no real surprise to see many drafting plans to acquire Aguero ahead of Gameweek 3 or 4. The fixtures (eve, WAT, cpl, WHM) from that time onwards will certainly warrant at least one City attacking asset, with the Argentine the leading option.

After finishing last season with four goals in his final seven outings, and with some favourable fixtures (SUN, whm, TOT, bou, AVL, sto) in the opening six Gameweeks, Leicester’s Leonardo Ulloa (6.0) should offer good value as a budget forward once again. The former Brighton striker should also still have penalty duties in his locker, and while there is plenty of competition for the forward positions at the King Power stadium, with Jamie Vardy, Shinji Okazaki and Andrej Kramaric competing for two positions, Ulloa appears to be at the front of the queue.

Coming in at 0.5 cheaper than Ulloa in FPL is Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson, who should attract plenty of suitors after scoring 20 goals for the Cherries last season. The kind opening schedule (AVL, liv, whm, LEI, nor, SUN) could see Wilson settle quickly in the Premier League thanks to his pace and clever movement, and he could follow in the footsteps of the likes of Charlie Austin and Danny Ings in offering great value as a budget option.

Like Pelle, West Ham’s Diafra Sakho adjusted well to English football last term, scoring nine goals in 23 league appearances. The Senegal international will set us back 6.5 in FPL this season, but with three favourable home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW) in the opening five Gameweeks, he looks primed to start the new campaign with a bang. Although West Ham co-chairman David Gold has admitted the Hammers will be looking to add a new striker to their squad, we still expect Sakho to continue as a regular up top.

Liverpool’s tricky away fixtures (sto, ars, mun) over the first six Gameweeks mean Christian Benteke only features towards the bottom of our initial ladder. A lack of match sharpness and the expectation it will take a while for the Belgian striker to fit into the style of play at Anfield are also slight concerns, but his 8.5 price tag looks very generous. Four very kind home matches in the first seven (BOU, WHM, NOR, AVL) should certainly ease his transition.

Chelsea’s Diego Costa is another big name who enters our rankings well down the pecking order. The Spain international missed the Community Shield with concerns over his hamstring resurfacing, with the 11.0-valued forward rated as a doubt for the season opener against Swansea. In truth, the Blues’ opening schedule (SWA, mci, wba, CPL, eve, ARS) is pretty tricky, ranking as the second toughest according to our Season Ticker, so for many Fantasy managers, it may come down to a choice between either Eden Hazard or Costa for Chelsea attacking coverage. Unless Jose Mourinho provides us with some good news regarding Costa’s fitness in his pre-match press conference, that choice could be a fairly straightforward one.

While Watford have the toughest opening fixtures (eve, WBA, SOT, mci, SWA, new) according to our ticker, we’re still happy to put our faith in Troy Deeney. The 5.5-rated forward has scored 19, 24 and 21 goals over the last three seasons in the Championship, and should be able to flourish with the likes of Jurado, Almen Abdi and Steven Berghuis providing the ammunition from the attacking midfield positions. It could take some time for those combinations to settle down, though, with so many new faces arriving at Vicarage Road this summer.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku sneaks onto our ladder, although the Toffees difficult slate of fixtures (WAT, sot, MCI, tot, CHE, swa) make it slightly surprising the Belgian international is currently in 17% of sides in FPL. Priced at 8.0 this season, Lukaku – who is hoping to recover from a hamstring niggle in time for tomorrow – looks one of the strongest mid-priced options, and should improve on the 10 goals he scored last term, particularly with penalty duties now in his locker. With the difficult opening schedule, the likes of Pelle, Wilson and Sakho could well outscore the former Chelsea striker during the opening weeks of the season.

The final spot in our rankings is handed to Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe. The England international managed four goals in 17 appearances after joining from Toronto FC in the January transfer window, and with the early fixtures (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou) in his favour, along with a more than fair price tag of 5.5 in FPL this season, he is certainly worthy of some consideration as we finalise our three-man frontlines.

Well, some folk didn't turn up to our draft which complicates matters... 😉

Not by cunning design I find myself heavily reliant upon Manchester United. Ended up with Darmian, Blind, Schneiderlin, Depay and Rooney!

You could still make a decent fist of sorting through the free agents and putting a squad together, I think the West Brom defence went almost untouched. You could almost play it like a weekly game now and just pick up and drop 18 players every week!

I was out at dinner, so had to attempt to do it on a phone running low on battery. Ended up with a decent team though, maybe a bit top-heavy, but still looks decent. Got Sterling, Depay, Costa and Walcott which I'm happy about. Also managed to pick up a few good central midfielders which seem to score well.

No real weak links in my team tbh, just a bit light on defensive back-up

fortunately was able to make it in the end and did ok grabbing Costa, Ozil, Walcott, Bony, Wijnaldum, Sakho amongst others.

My shortlist deleted itself a 1/3 of the way through which extremely annoying, and after rebuilding it during it again deleted itself. Very poor from the game really.

That only happened twice to you? It was happening every minute or so to me! Apparently every time a draft in another division of the FFS league was completed it got wiped. Refreshing the screen brought it back but it was a frustration to say the least.

only twice as I gave up making a shortlist after the 2nd time.

Ok, fair enough, unfortunately I had no way of knowing that, and probably I'd have been worried that refreshing would just have me exit the draft or something! The page was so unstable as it was!

Yep, it was heart in mouth time the first time I refreshed the page to try to fix it!

Anorak started a dialogue with the support team whilst the draft was going on, hence why I know what caused the issue.

I wasn't in the FFS draft, but another with some friends, and we were only six in the league. It was easier than I thought though! Got a lot of really good players, and I'm facing a proper benching dilemma in the weeks to come. Some of the other guys were drafting two or more keepers in the early rounds, and only half of us really seemed to have any strategy going in.

      Ended up with this team:

      Stekelenburg
      Coleman - Mertesacker - Cedric - Janmaat - PVA - Shaw
      Mané - Özil - Oscar - Mata - Payet - Chadli
      Agüero - Walcott - Lukaku - Benteke - Vardy

It really did help in preparing me for some of the issues that people have been experiencing.

Crikey... no way was there only 6 people drafting in your league! More like just the two of you!!

I've ended up with something similar.... though not quite so good. It's ruined the game tbh.

        Stekelenberg - Lloris
        Cahill - Darmian - Vertonghen - Kolarov - Stones - Jenkinson
        Ozil - Mata - Oscar - Tadic - Cabaye - Adam
        Sanchez - Benteke - Pelle - Bony

It was a bit of a disaster tbh, Jonty! In the first round, I had pick 6 and Aguero only went off the boards at pick 5. I think out of the 10 teams only 4 or 5 of us were actively picking - there were a lot of skipped turns.

My shortlist disappeared after 2 rounds... I could see all the players and the filtering was working but my shortlist said 0 players. I didn't think to refresh the page as everything seemed to be working. I even tried recreating my shortlist and it would be wiped mid-pick! I see GreenWindmill had the same issues... probably, everyone did.

Despite this, I managed to pick up a ridiculously good team. So I'm not sure how I will select an 11 each week... It's going to come down almost purely to luck.

Went down really smooth. Sure the shortlist went out the window straight away but as I had nr 1 pick I only had autopick for my first pick so I would get Haz then I unchecked that box and went freestyle.
Found out after a few rounds that refreshing got it back but never used it anyway.
      Ended up with the following

Lloris, Schmeicel(picked last in 18th round!)

      Baines, Lescott, Jenninson, Morgan, Williams

Haz(M/F), Can(D/M), Özil, C Adam, Mahrez, Sissoko, Willian, Shelvey

Have the feeling a lot of people are going to lose interest, as the draft looks highly imbalanced in my division. Half the people were autopicking and one guy ended up with almost entirely defenders. The system needs tweaking in my opinion - Not least to sort out that Shortlist bug!

I reckon this format works best old skool stylee, with a bunch of mates sat around a table and some money on it to keep people interested.

    Courtois / Henn

    Kosc / Huth / Coates / Francis / Targett

    Haz / Ozil / Walcott / Mane / Bentaleb

    Rooney / Benteke / Sakho

Only question for me is going with:

You only get banned if you fake an injury to get someone sent off. It's not for diving.

    New Community Article -

Sir David White is to play 5-4-1 all season. Do you have the same faith in this year's defenders?

What are ppl views on the following team structure
    - rotating gk for 9mn
    - 2 big hitters in def (kosc and shaw) and 3 cheapie at 4.5 each
    - strong 5 man mid with hazard/ster/wally/mane/Chadlington
    - rooney plus two rotating cheapie in Deeney and Wilson

I think that's very viable. Ppl might suggest that downgrading Chadli and getting benteke etc. But two Fwd have very strong home fix. And getting a 4.5m bench warmer and starting say benteke is not necessarily better then two fwds

Only downside is if you want to get a 8m striker in it would then require 2 transfers but it's very viable as there some great attacking mids available in that 7m bracket

This is exactly what I am opting for.

Only differences are Ozil and Henderson in MF and Sakho up top.

Why Hennessey and Schwarzer? Better taking the backup 4,0 for Hennessey and make sure you have a playing keeper until Speroni i back.

this site has a page called team news http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/team-news/ that is the most reliable place to check, more so than the 'experts' that lurk on the forums

For me I am going in with following line up and 5.0 itb.

    Pants (Ruddy)
    Kos, Kolorov, Cedric (Martin/Morgan)
    Fab, Ramsey,Sterling,Young (Sinclair)
    Kane, Pelle, Jerome

Aguero - much as I like him, out of him, Haz and Sanchez, he is most likely to get injured at some point based on track records. Will keep Sterling as attacking city cover unless he flops- no sign of that currently.
Hazard - Such a high ownership that if he doesn't perform gw1 and 2 only really one way his price can go I think
Sanchez - low starting ownership , only way his price will go is up once fit.

With 5.0 in the bank I should be able to get Sanchez/Hazard as and when.
    All good in theory 🙂

    Any Saints fans about?

Looking at The Sun Dream Team. 3 or 4 Southampton seems wise to capitalise on their extra 2 games before the first transfer window....

Steklenburg and Soares likely to play in Europe? Koeman seems keen to impress in the competition but I am aware that Soares didnt play last night.

Pelle and Mane are in my team also.

      I'm in the same boat.

Currently sitting on all four saints. I also have Darmain, Depay & Roonpig.

Maybe a bit too gung ho but I want to capitalise on their extra games.
