Liverpool chalk up a third straight clean sheet after emerging from the Emirates with a goalless draw. Arsenal fail to score at home yet again, with Petr Cech keeping the Merseysiders at bay with a string of vital first-half stops.

Arsenal Stutter at Home Again

Despite boasting nearly two-thirds of the possession (66%) and fashioning 19 shots at goal, the Gunners were unable to breach Liverpool’s unyielding rearguard. Astonishingly, the north London club have now drawn blanks in five of their last six matches at the Emirates across all competitions, which might encourage Arsene Wenger to switch things up for their next home encounter.

In light of Per Mertesacker (illness) and Laurent Koscielny sitting out this encounter, Gabriel and Callum Chambers were drafted into central defence. The former was the only member of Arsenal’s back five not to receive a single bonus point, with Petr Cech claiming the maximum three – the former Chelsea shot-stopper amassed 11 points in all, having rebuffed the Reds’ attacks with eight saves.

Alexis Sanchez’s came close to breaking the deadlock when he clattered the upright from close range following a well-worked move, while Aaron Ramsey’s 6% ownership were miffed to witness his goal wrongly disallowed for offside. Both players will fancy their chances of gracing the scoresheet soon, though, given that they face a trip to Newcastle United and home tie against Stoke City in the next two Gameweeks.

Reds Rearguard Holds Steady

Liverpool continued their unbeaten start to the season after carding a third successive clean sheet. Joe Gomez (4.7) turned out a performance that belied his years, quelling the hosts’ threat down their right flank by virtue of his excellent positioning and impressive recovery speed. On last night’s showing, the ex-Charlton defender looks likely to retain his starting role in the left-back berth ahead of Alberto Moreno, rendering him the most valuable route into the Merseysiders’ defence. Three favourable home ties in the next four Gameweeks (WHU, NOR, AVL) only serve to strengthen his claim for inclusion.

Philippe Coutinho (8.1) fired a rasping strike onto the underside of the crossbar in the early exchanges, before forcing a superb fingertip-save out of Cech minutes before the break. No midfielder has attempted more shots than the Brazil international this term (15), which certainly bodes well for a Gameweek 4 clash against a Hammers outfit that shipped four goals last time out and are devoid of Carl Jenkinson and Adrian through suspension.

Christian Benteke (8.5) spurned a golden opportunity to afford Liverpool the lead in the first period but proved effective as the spearhead to their attack. Given that the other candidates around Benteke’s price tag (Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Graziano Pelle) also blanked this Gameweek, his 40% ownership will feel confident ahead of the above-mentioned trio of Anfield showdowns.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why are we getting our captaincy selections so wrong?

Is it something we are doing? Are we risk averse? Or are the failures of Aguero, Rooney, Sanchez and Hazard over the course of the first three gameweeks just an early season blip. Will they (well maybe not Rooney) justify our selections over the coming weeks?

Or should we learn the lessons of last season with Harry Kane and ignore price and go for form first? Mahrez captainers are among those who arguably learned that lesson.

Six home wins so far isn't helping matters.

Aguero is surely the silver bullet from now on, though?

After failing spectacularly with my captain choices in weeks 1 & 2 I went against the common wisdom and chose a cheap captain this week. In form and playing against an out of form Sunderland, I thought Ayew was a brilliant choice.

Needless to say Sunderland tightened up their defence and Ayew scored 1 point, the lowest of my team.

Luckily everyone else performed but I think I'll go back to a City player this week.

Defenders seem to be good captaincy options too these days. Seriously though, if you look at the top point scorers so far this season, its very random.

Indeed, are we overlooking Kolarov this weekend? He's the man in form, looks certain for a clean sheet and probably bonus, so Kun will need a monster haul to best him. On top of which Kolarov has a big attacking upside himself.

Going on opposition form, home team form and player form Kolarov actually looks the superior Man City captaincy shout this week - but how many will captain him? Very few I think, which is a shame.

I think people need to consider playing more than 3 defenders. If they aren't keen to captain any they might be keen to start more of them

Its not uncommon for defenders to get 150+ points. At prices such as 5.5 these premium defensive options are bargains. Gomez is 4.6 even, thats crazy

It's been 3 weeks, its too small a sample to judge. Over 38 weeks Aguero (C) Hazard (VC) will outscore Gomis (C) Mahrez (VC)

I feel as if that quote can come back and bite us in the behind.

What is the probability? and how do we know it? Its easy to justify our own decisions and say we were unlucky but thats a dangerous game. Yaya and Ramsey defied this probability in the past.

In its simplest form, probability can be expressed mathematically as the number of occurrences of a targeted event divided by the number of occurrences plus the number of failures of occurrences (this adds up to the total of possible outcomes):

          p(a) = p(a)/[p(a) + p(b)]

Sometimes the right choice just doesn't pay off.

GW1 can be a lottery as there is no form to go off.

GW3 didn't have an obvious choice in my opinion. Rooney, Aguero, Hazard, Pelle, were all decent shouts but none of them scored big.

So far my captains have been Rooney, Benteke and Aguero and don't think they were bad choices.

Next week a lot of the potential big performers have favourable fixtures. I think captain choice this week could be a real differential as can't see them all blanking.

No real point scorer in gameweek 1 for me, but captaining Bentekkers in gameweek 2 and Gomis gameweek 3 I think I've done fairly well! Like others say, some defenders are looking like good captaining options (looking at you Kolarov)

risk averse. Start the week full of bravado and intending to follow gut instinct. End up following the crowd as 40-50% captaincy selections can't be wrong can they?
there was some software going around last year that worked out what wrong captaincy decisions had cost. mine was well over 200 net pointsafter about 28/29 games!!
only ever captained one defender (Baines) when he was on a hot streak and taking the pens, freekicks etc.

Form has to be a big part of it, and that's very difficult to judge at this stage. You can argue that Mahrez's form made him an obvious pick this week, but if he'd done what he did in GW1 & GW2 this season in GW16 and GW17 last year, would people have been captaining him for GW18? I seriously doubt it - they would have said that it was too small a sample size, and that he was as yet unproven. Three gameweeks of returns is much more convincing than two though, and it's fair to say that he looks like a must-have budget enabler at the moment.

I do agree that price can mislead people - you often see critics of the idea of someone benching a 6m player, when there's nothing inherently wrong with that (bar arguably being a poor use of your budget). Similarly, would Gomis have been in more teams from the start at 8m instead of 7m, for example? It seems perverse, but I think that he might have.

However, the top players are expensive for a reason. Take Aguero for example. City blanked 3 times last season. Aguero was involved in 54.8% of their goals when he was on the pitch. City were always likely to score, and if fit, Aguero was always more likely than not to be involved. In the 29 matches where he played 60 minutes or more, Aguero blanked 10 times. That's very good, but even the best player in the game only brought the points in 2/3 of the time. Captaincy blanks are an inevitable part of the game, and we shouldn't over-react to it. Keep captaining the big hitters with good fixtures - it will work out as the best strategy over the long term.

Because captaincy is a total crapshoot, no matter who you pick.

It's the most frustratingly luck-based aspect of FPL. The new tokens don't help either.

    11. Ruth_NZ
      • 10 Years

      Here's my take...

      1. Past performance is being viewed through rose-tinted spectacles and not analytically. As a result certain players are used as a "comfort blanket" captain choice, supported and reinforced by the majority who then claim afterwards that it wasn't a bad decision, only bad luck. Couple this with aversion to risk - by which I mean the risk of making a mistake that others don't (safety in numbers) - and you have a reasonable explanation for the poor recent record of FFS captain polls (which didn't do well last season either).

      2. First example - Sanchez is not a good captain option right now in any game in my opinion. He was brilliant in FPL for 3 months last season when Arsenal had a lot of injuries, he was playing central and everything was going through him. Now he's wide in a team with more attacking options. He can't be captained because of that unless you are willing to take a big punt (at least I consider it to be a big punt). Of course he will get some hauls but they are not going to be easily predictable and that's what you need from a captain option.

      3. Second example - Aguero is not the "default" captain option (or shouldn't be in my opinion). He's unlikely to be the best option every week. He scores more goals at home than away (69 at home to 43 away in the PL) and has never scored a PL hat-trick away from the Etihad where he has 5.

I would prefer Costa to Aguero this week - Watford have been really resilient so far whereas Palace are more open. So I think Palace (h) is a better fixture than Watford (h) for goals therefore. I don't have Costa so it's academic but if I did I wouldn't be frightened to make that call even though it's only a marginal one and Aguero could very easily do better than Costa - it's maybe 55/45. But it's certainly not a default decision (or shouldn't be).

      4. As a result of (1) above, lower priced players with good form and fixtures tend to be ignored and even laughed at (as Jonty pointed out). Anyone captaining Mahrez so far has been derided on here as a "casual", I have seen that superior attitude in posts a number of times. 🙁 Maybe these so-called "casuals" are just less prejudiced or convinced of their informed viewpoints?

Similarly it is not popular on here to contest or express doubt about majority choices. There's a kind of thing where these choices are supposed to be considered wise, and if they fail unlucky, and anyone saying otherwise is "captain hindsight" or worse. I have been posting on here for a year now and have gained some credibility I guess but last season I took an almighty amount of flak for challenging majority views. How dare some no-nothing newbie do that? 😕

      5. In my opinion any score of 7+ is a captain success. I don't need a haul (though I'll be glad when it comes). I don't even need my captain to be considered "explosive". I just need a player that scores a goal or gets a clean sheet if a defender. That's what I try to prioritise in captain decisions. Mind you, with 3 (c) fails so far it appears I am no better at it than anyone else. 🙂

lool just appears that you're angry that many here criticise certain player decisions, which is true....who is mahrez or ayew or gomis over aguero and costa and hazard and even rooney?

...we're just starting the season so form of a week or two doesn't mean anything and logically any player who has been successful in the game in the past and believes he's a good fpl player would pick one of the big boys in a favourable fixture or even a less favourable one

....so I would criticise those who keep picking mahrez for example every week and call them noobs or trigger happy type of players who get lucky...it happened with ramsey before but he proved himself to be a top midfielder after and is established now...you can say those got lucky...so until mahrez becomes that top class well known midfielder I will still call anyone who capped him lucky noob lol

Ruthnz you probably won't see this or reply since it won't suit your argument but kun scored 13 league goals both home and away last season and I'm not sure but I think he may have had more assists away from home and less blanks away from home.

Looking beyond last season is a bit failure as last season was the first where he was foot for the majority of it.

Also of the ten games v top 6 opposition he blanked in just 2 games (ARS, CHE) scoring 10 goals 1 assist iirc so maybe you might have been wrong to doubt him as a captain pick v Everton?

Ps it is no harm to admit you are wrong every now and again it will do wonders for your credibility.

There are a lot of informed people on this site who delve into KPIs (Key performance indicators). You can't say you or anyone else has got a captaincy decision wrong if the judgement was based on sound analysis or thought process.

We should be risk averse. Whenever we make a decision it should be to get the maximum possible return from our available budget.

FPL tell you at the start of the season who they think is high/low risk through the pricing system. Our job is to figure out where FPL have mispriced and sell and buy accordingly.

Prior to GW3 we didn't have much in the way of form thus it makes perfect sense to look back at the previous season in order to draw some conclusions.

It is from now on that we will separate the shrewd operators from the risk taking punters.

"We should be risk averse. Whenever we make a decision it should be to get the maximum possible return from our available budget."

Those two statements aren't potentially contradictory? What are you looking for - a safe return or the maximum possible? The latter often implies risk.

          Hi Ruth,

The below definition should help you.

A description of an investor who, when faced with two investments with a similar expected return (but different risks), will prefer the one with the lower risk.

So as you see you an be both risk averse and going for the maximum possible return. e.g picking Aguero at home to Watford is both risk averse and going for the maximum possible points return.

This is my judgement, not fact.

Fpl transfers and bandwagons are a bit like booking with a low cost airline. Get in early, get 'em cheap, get in late and pay through the nose and no doubt enjoy the experience far less. Most players at this stage are still cheap enough to gain a few 0.1 but in a couple of weeks the likes of Gomez and Mahrez become mid priced and slightly less appealing to new investors (unless they continue their form, which there is nothing to suggest they won't).

    Value seems to be important this year for 2 reasons;

Firstly, a drop seems much quicker to happen than a rise which means getting the risers in early will give quicker profit and mean you avoid the droppers.

Secondly, there seems to be a larger group than in previous seasons of high mid to big gun level players who may (or may not) become essential by Christmas (Alexis, Hazard, Pedro, Costa, Yaya, Silva, Kun, Kolarov etc, etc to name but a few) and only with some canny transfer dealings to boost your coffers will you be able to afford enough of them to stay in touch with the top fpl managers.

This is where the astute seasoned player will come to the fore and rebalance the fpl equilibrium after such a difficult opening to the season.

So the summary of all this; Get your transfers done early, ship out certain fallers (unless you are 100% confident of their pedigree to perform for you) and if you have a good record over the years playing Fpl, then you will find yourself stepping over the casuals before you tuck into your Christmas turkey dinner !

Of course this is not a certain ticket to success but something all those aspiring to top their mini-leagues must consider as "essential" this season?

Yeah, I'm finding the severity of prices decreases quite interesting. It creates panic selling, lowers prices of genuinely good FPL targets (RuthNZ did a piece on some) and so keeps a whole bunch of players simmering away as kind of next-phase options.

I wonder if there was a hope this might happen. Players from Toon and Palace for example. Bad fixtures to start with, but when fixtures improve many of their players will be .1/2/3 below original start price. Keeps things interesting.

      Chelsea - Costa, Hazard, Pedro
M City - Aguero, Silva, (Sterling + Yaya)
Arsenal - Sanchez, (Other options at 8-9m)

Ideally, 3 strikers and 3 mids

See a true big hitter is 10m or more. I think value can be found in the cheaper alternatives. I'm thinking - Aguero Sterling Pedro Ozil - for example.

Value can be found yes, but why settle for good value cheaper alternatives when you can get the big boys?

I think the real value is in the 8-9m price range. So many options there that I think we can forgo some of the more expensive options such as Hazard and Sanchez etc.

I think you're better off creating team value then bring in Costa when fixtures/form improve

I kind of agree with this and I kind of don't.

I do believe a money strategy is called for. But it doesn't need to be the first priority, you just need to have it as a factor in your mind. Although honestly I would be doing that in the first half of the season anyway.

I bought Wilson in pre-rise this week. But only after making an assessment that showed him to be a decent choice for FPL points over the next period.

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/08/23/the-scoreboard-gameweek-3-sunday-2/?hc_page=40#hc_comment_11043540

I wouldn't have made the transfer just for the money. Lukaku is rising too but his fixtures are awful and I won't be bringing him in anytime soon because of that. Form over fixtures, yes. But if Everton find it hard to score against their opponents then Lukaku can only suffer, good form or not. However a realistic chance of FPL points PLUS price rises PLUS a good fit for where you want to go with your squad is a good reason to move - hence Wilson for me.

I also really agree with Ryan that there are some excellent options in the sub-premium level. The OP assumes that having Sanchez, Hazard, Costa, Aguero and Silva etc will be beneficial. It may not be. I'm sure that even later in the season it will be possible to find mid-price alternatives to outscore some of them.

So having the biggest budget by Xmas isn't the name of the game. It only needs to be big enough. Which means it's a factor but only one of many. The only "essential" in FPL is points. And the money game is only one (small) part of how you achieve them.

The OP said 'may (or may not)' not 'will' become essential.

Also Sale Value is more important than Team Value since multiple .1 rises on many players gives you no purchase power compared to .2 rises on a couple players.

Futhermore if you have a heavy hitter gaining value you will not likely sell him as he's probably a season keeper. On the otherhand some1 like Kolarov who is going through a purple patch and will most likely be rotated at some point is the type of bandwagon you jump on to increase the Sale Value of you team. He is the type of player that gives you access to in form players you could not afford on top of your current squad.

However, his entire post was based on the "may" assumptions.

Ruth is correct, if it turns out to be the "may not" and that the big hitters never get scoring, then building value is almost meaningless.

Well said, posts like the op really annoy me as they set impressionable noobs into panic and reinforce outdated theories re value that date back to a time when price rises were quicker and we had many more big guns that were almost essential like lamps gerro ronaldo and fabregas as well as some big fwds at the time like Drogba and rvp. There just aren't as many big hitters of that quality in fpl anymore which essentially minimises the advantage of value.

Disagree, chasing price rises is basically knee-jerking. It's a fact that the most expensive players don't always get you the most points. I'm not worried about losing, say 1M, if it means I can have the players I want.

What is 1M anyway, when there's options like Mahrez, Wilson, Diouf etc. freeing up funds? Also Pedro could outscore Hazard (who knows) which gains you 2M. That's a lot of price changes and ripping up your team instead of just finding a cheaper option who will fire better than an expensive one!

      1. Marstar
        • 13 Years

Mahrez, Diouf, Wilson are also example of the price rising options people are chasing. Why are you treating points gainers and price rises as mutually exclusive?

If/when Mahrez and Wilson run out of steam they will be cashed in for in form bargain option in the 5th/3rd Mid/fwd slots and the Value gained used to upgrade to more expensive players ... in my case upgrading budget defenders/keepers to premium nailed on options which historically have delivered higher points averages by season's end.

Mentioned those because they scream value to me. Fine to get them right now, but that they are rising in price is just a bonus imo. I'm not saying team value isn't an important part of game, but I'm saying the consensus on here is that team value is everything. People transfer out players that look like dropping or are dropping in price (sometimes even for hits) even if they still are good options (see Hazard, Sigurdsson, Ramsey, Henderson etc..)

And what's the fun in following the price changes like a slave, I'd rather try to find the next bargain than knee-jerk in the same players as everyone else.

      I agree with this entirely.
I am not even near the top 1,000,000 at the moment but have a team worth 101.2 and haven't even used a wildcard yet, so I'm actually quite happy! Done it mainly by transferring very early in the week (plus a -8 hit) which I usually try to avoid doing, but I agree; this season it's worth it

      WHAT UTTER RUBBISH!

Value is pretty important but I usually find I end up with a mill or two sitting in my account for large chunks of the season.

It is not always the most expensive players that sour the most points as perfectly evidenced by a look at the top points scorers in f over the first three gws. The better players understand this imo and they pick the player they think will score the most in a given period rather than just trying to buy the most expensive players

      Agüero (C) - Gomis - Diouf

We've done well. It's good that we actually have full backs who can defend and protect the CB's. Playing a DM yesterday showed how important they are in any formation. That being said, we've conceded 2 goals which have wrongly been ruled in our favour. I'd still like to see Sakho + a DM on a regular basis, but definitely keep the defence as it is for now. Lots of confidence I'd presume.

Balotelli had a lot of shots last year.

Coutinho couldn't finish a cupcake. Yes he is a good shooter from long range but the best mid picks are all adept finishers in the box.

                Well, that's true about Mario.

I think he'll do alright this season. He's not going to get 15 goals, but he'll be good for FPL points I think.

We were terrible in the first half, and in the second half he had very little space.

But he had a golden chance about 5 yards out and hit the post. Would have been a goal 9 times out of 10 for Sanchez.

He's a defender magnet. He was well involved but the opposition swamped him as soon as he was on the ball. Had little room to move but still did well with this limited space. Unfortunately lost the ball a few times too though.

Hit the post. Headed over from 6-7 yards. Had a quiet game but looked threatening when he popped up. The whole arsenal performance was disjointed so it's hard to assess him.

Honestly though, Coutinho is a class act and wouldn't look out of place playing for Real Madrid or Barca. If they stump up the cash then we'll surely sell.

          Butland (McCarthy)
          Williams, Kolarov, Gomez (Francis, STaylor)
          Sanchez, Yaya, Coutinho, Mahrez (Westwood)
          Kun, Costa, Wilson

          0.2ITB.
          Should I
          A) Stick
          B) Sanchez + Wilson -> Ozil + Diouf
          C) Coutinho -> Shaquiri + 1.3ITB

About 3/4 weeks ago I was arguing with about 7 chaps on here, telling them Dawson was by far the best WBA defender to go with but they would have it! 'Lescott is the main man' they shouted! Well, I did say Dawson will be a starter ALL season, can't say the same for Joleon now can we? Dawson is easily the best pick and if the baggies sign Marshall in goal, Dawson will be the best way into that back line. If they don't sign Marshall, I will be sticking with myhill!

Myhill, defo. Marshall, possibly! He will come in at 5 and will get a lot of points but he will be at more risk of rotation than Dawson! Contrary to goal record, he is a big threat off set pieces! Almost every corner is aimed at Dawson!

Seems everyone is concerned with price rises and getting players in asap. With Sanchez, Yaya/Silva and Mahrez nailed on in most teams. Payet is the one to take out. Unfair.

he was involved in almost everything we did well. That brilliant save from Cech stopped him from scoring. I dont think too many other keepers would have saved that. I think Coutinho will score/assist more this season.

nope. He's brilliant. I'm not talking about FPL which most people on here judge him on but 1 goal in 3 games isn't bad especially since we played stoke away and arsenal away. People forget that he can improve and he is improving.

What I learnt from the Arsenal VS Liverpool game. From a FPL perspective.

Liverpool defended impressively again and you should really consider investing into the defence. The back 4 looks settled and rotation is very unlikely. Joe Gomez is your cheapest option, but lacks the attacking threat compared to the other 3. He's a right footed player playing down the left which doesn't bode well for him. Gomez has had 3 bookings in 3 games, on track to beat James Perch's record who managed 5 in 5. So you would expect a suspension sooner or later. He struggled against Chamberlain's pace but otherwise he was sound.
Liverpool's main focus point is Coutinho who again could've had a couple of goals, he's in great form and the next 3 Home games (WHU, NOR, AVL), he could well deliver some points. Firmino looked decent and his continuing price drop can only be beneficial for those who want to invest into him when he starts getting his match sharpness back. He created more chances than Ibe, Lallana and Coutinho have combined in their first 3 games.
Benteke was exquisite, he looks a real handful upfront, his link up play with Coutinho and Milner was very good, he should start firing soon. He looks settled and was unlucky not to score.

As for Arsenal, I can see a potential shake up for the next game vs Newcastle. Ramsey was poor yet again, although his goal was wrongly flagged offside, playing him down the wing just doesn't work for him. He lacks the pace, and he looks out of his comfort zone. If there's one player in the midfield who will be dropped next weekend, my money is on Ramsey. Chamberlain was excellent when he came on and caused so many problems. He would be my punt, his cheap price could be a bargain if he starting getting guaranteed game time.
As for Sanchez, he had a few half chances, and continues to be a huge part of Arsenals attack, hes almost considered an OOP player as he has a tendency of playing alongside Giroud, which can only benefit FPL owners. He's a little short of match sharpness, but he will start firing very very soon.
Giroud is a bit like Marmite, you either love him, or hate him.. Arsenal haven't scored in either of their 2 home games yet, and his primary job is to score goals, and he hasn't delivered as yet. Although Walcott offered little when he came on, I genuinely think he could be given a chance up top vs Newcastle. 4 points from 9 isn't good enough and Wenger will really want some goals.
The Wizard of OZil? He's more like Casper the Ghost, he was nowhere to be seen last night. I would stay away from him, he turns up whenever he likes.

Ox will not get a guaranteed game time. That's my thought.

Ramsey was not played at his best position, but I think he will not be dropped as he did okay.

Am I the only person who thinks Ozil gets really unfair stick? I thought he was far far better than Ramsey or Cazorla last night, and Sanchez was very poor, but Ozil is always the scapegoat. His game relies on those around him making runs that he can pick out, and they simply aren't doing that. He can't play a great pass if everyone is just stood about around him.

Indeed, but people need to realise that that isn't his game. His game is his incredible vision, movement, and ability to pick a pass - he can't do that if his only target is Giroud with his back to goal and a defender tight to him. He needs quality around him, that's just the player he is, he's not going to charge around aimlessly like Rooney and end up in his own penalty area showing "great heart and determination".

Well I get that point, but that is just the player he is. It's true of many players; Silva wouldn't be as good without Aguero ahead of him, Xavi would never have been as effective without clever players around him, ditto Mata (as we can see at Utd), ditto, Pirlo, ditto Scholes. There's not much a great playmaker can do if he has no target.

You are not. "Nowhere to be seen". The guy had the most touches in the match. Most final third passes completed by huge margin (76, second best Cazorla had 45). The easy way to see him would have been taking a glance at the match.

But that "analysis" above is very strange generally, seen that it's all positive about Liverpool (defend impressively(?) again(?)) when Arsenal dominated the whole second half, were very close to score a few times (Sanchez "half-chances"? lol!!). Why was it hulked is beyond me.

              that's how I seen it
as a sanchez owner I was looking at what he was doing, it seemed to be standing watching ozil play or making simple passes then watching others attack. there was the occasional move forward, but he doesn't seem to time it right, particularly against defence who are compact. Some people will say this is down to match fitness but it reminded very much of how he played a lot of times last year.

Ozil and ramsey seemed to be everywhere looking to influence play, it is possible that ozil still isn't great fpl prospect as he loves to do most of his work 15-20 yards outside box.

I fear people are ignoring the fact that two goals have been scored against Pool which were disallowed incorrectly (at least the Arsenal one was a definite clanger). They look much more composed, but really it should be 1 out of 3 in terms of cleansheets.

Ozil was immense last night. Absolutely brilliant player. He should have been MOTM and also should have been Vs Crystal Palace. I was there so watch it first hand. No way he was a ghost. Watch the highlights!? Just of him the highlights are about 7 minutes.

Firmino was unconvincing IMO. I wouldn't touch him and believe his price drtop is justified.

I agree with you on Ramsey. He should be dropped for Oxlade. Or Cazorla should be dropped and Ramsey played next to Coquelin.

Would love to have Costa, he's a great pick, but I think the only reason to captain him over Agüero this week would be for the sake of being different.

            B) Ayew

I'm veering slightly towards your Coutinho punt in light of the fact you already have Diouf. That or just hold if you have anything else to tidy up in the team. Payet will score consistently I reckon.

Coutinho would be a real flair pick. A footballer's footballer 🙂

He has historically been very frustrating to own though, for all his wonderful skills, his shooting has been a bit haphazard, partly because he shoots from range so often. But I read something this morning that could suggest that things could be very different to last season for him.

              http://basstunedtored.com/2015/08/25/analysis-arsenal-0-liverpool-0/

"What is even more interesting is that Benteke has created six chances for Coutinho already; bear in mind here that only five Liverpool players set up more shots for the Brazilian in the whole of last season, and two of those only managed eight chances."

So he's a risk but possibly with more upside than he's ever had before.

It's not stupid and there's definitely an argument for it given the next fixture and the size of the bandwagon that will form should Wilson deliver again in his next game. But Gomis is in form and Wilson's hatrick was very fortunate so it's risky.

In the awkward position of playing Courtois over McCarthy this week, but wanting the latter to have the game of his life, to increase the likelihood that he retains the gloves after the int. break when Speroni returns.

Kind of agree. Not sure whether i should care that much, given Palace don't do clean sheets anyway. But there's obvious benefits, incase of injury to Courtois and also he'd be rising in price all the time, until he's not the cheapest playing gk anymore.

Want to bring in - Silva, Mahrez, Pedro, Wilson. Plus I want to shift Wanyama.

            Thoughts and advice?

              Borderline.

I think I'd probably push the button.

Looks like the most popular transfer(s) this week:

            Payet + Pelle/Sakho/Gomis/Diouf> Pedro + Wilson for a hit

Am I the only one nervous of having a terrible season after having a woeful start and playing my WC? I'm 2.35m OR.... Has anyone ever had as bad a start and cracked 10k?

I've been 1.9m OR after 5 weeks and finished 5k

Impressive, this season has been so underwhelming so far. Jenkinson summed it up this week.

This. I was 1.9M last season and finished 242. Early wildcard is the secret.

Can all change in a gameweek (the infamous gameweek 8 last season) plus everyone's points are so squashed right now, I scored 15 points over the average this week and jumped about 1.5 million places.

That's just one decent captaincy choice.

Was it GW8 when Tadic burned me last year? Hopefully things will change this week.

Yes and Aguero scored 4 and missed a penalty or something. Plus Baines and Pelle etc... It's was huge

you'll be fine. Last year I was around 900k 4 weeks in and almost got in the top 1k

I guess it can all turn around. Three seasons ago I was 150k and got a ridiculous 17 green arrows consecutively after GW 15, finished just outside the top 1k. I'm going to have to be more careful about my picks for sure though.

I cant remember where I started in GW 1 last season, but I know it was terrible, around 2Mil

I played WC in GW3 and never looked back. A fair amount of luck, (C) Aguero vs Spurs and playing Kane when he demolished Chelsea also (C) Austin for his DGW - I ended up 4K.

Somehow I do not believe that kind of finish is achievable again - I don't look at stats much, watch most games or highlights thereof, but play more with gut feel etc. Surely it was more luck than skill.

One such example is that I plan to keep Milner.

You play similar to me in that case. Last season I pretty much looked at the scout picks before a match and picked players based on that and my own initiative. I finished just outside 5k. This year I've been much more invested but much less fortunate.

Last GW, I had a wildcard team set to go, just need the push the button.

In that, I would have dropped Wilson and Azpi - 24 points.

I would have had Ighalo and Prodl in those spots - 8 points. So that is a 16 point swing right there.

But Friday night, I said screw it, lets give it another week - sitting at 1.1Mil.

I got lucky, and no matter how much you invest and plan, FPL requires a big slice of luck. and a healthy topping of patience as well.

I've never had as bad a start but regularly get top 20k from the high one millions rank after GW3 or 4. Top 10k always seems a leap too far, though. Do you know if a 'zero to hero' league for the 2M+ ranked been set up yet?

My target before the season started was top 1k but I've had to readjust that target. Last season I stayed in the top 100k from GW1 to GW38.
