Captaincy nightmares have blighted many of the community members’ seasons so far, with established heavy hitters failing to deliver. Our community writers and hot topic posters were on hand to offer advice on improving our armband selections, whilst they also assessed the merits of this week’s latest bandwagons. Meanwhile, our latest Members tables look at those who are due a goal or two and we also catch up on those who have had a dream start in our community tournaments.

The Community Articles

Your Mum’s Athletic’s popular look at how the bookmakers are influencing his decisions returned with this analysis of how his betting-based Gameweek 3 predictions fared. He also produced another article on how the odds are helping make his mind up about Gameweek 4.

Last week’s bandwagons, such as Bournemouth’s hat-trick hero Callum Wilson were the focus of Rodellegabomb’s analysis, as he ponders whether Wilson and two other sought-after players are worth our investment.

Captaincy decisions have been a tricky tactic to get right for many this season. Jose’s Magic Omelette is urging a different tact with his collection of alternative armband heroes for Gameweek 4.

Looking further ahead Jarvish has looked in detail at how the FA Cup, and in particular its semi-finalists, look set to define this Fantasy Premier League season through strategic use of the game’s chips. Wingate, however, is among those to think the bench boost chip may be better used during a single Gameweek.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

With bandwagons continuing to deliver and new recruits settling into the Premier League straight away, there are no shortage of transfer options ahead of Gameweek 4. Chelsea’s Pedro hit the ground running in Gameweek 3 with a goal and assist and is understandably a top transfer target for many. But despite this optimism from many in the community, doubtful Doosra was on hand with his tables to rain on their Pedro parade.

Other impressive new recruits that our hot topic posters are considering include Bournemouth’s Max Gradel and Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri, two players that Parm has his eye on.

Established players dominated this week’s Rough with the Smooth hot topic, where we round up the community’s best and worst Fantasy Football decisions. For S Kuqi Aleksander Kolarov’s goal, clean sheet and bonus points gave him much to cheer.

Meanwhile, Spartabhoy regrets keeping faith in Wayne Rooney as a captaincy option. As our hot topic after Manchester United’s Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge showed it takes more than a hat-trick to earn the striker a place back in many other Fantasy managers’ affections.

Other established Premier League players to impress our hot topic posters include Philippe Coutinho, who has attracted the attention of D1sable in his search for the perfect number 10. Scoredelario believes that Swansea’s Kyle Naughton has beaten competition from Ashley Williams to emerge as the best Swansea option in defence.

For those who continue to marvel at the goal scoring prowess of Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez TM245 took us on a trip down memory lane to remember some other great mid-price midfielders who got off to a fine start.

While Mahrez’ ownership has rocketed this season, Ruth NZ has turned his attention to players who offer a potential gold mine of cut price talent after seeing their prices drop. This week has also seen the return of Wakey‘s Falling Stars hot topic, where he creates a team of price fallers and pits them against the Gameweek average.

Amongst those players that are already seeing an ownership fall is Dimitri Payet, who has been ditched by more than 37,000 FPL managers this week. Footballoholic dropped by to express his incredulity at those losing faith in the West Ham midfielder.

The 40,000+ Fantasy managers who have dumped Andre Ayew get similar short shrift from Van Kinkert Delarosa in his hot topic on Swansea’s attacking midfielder.

Many in the community are also losing patience in their captaincy choices, according to Bowstring the Carp’s look back at the popular armband picks so far. This was also covered in our hot topic on why so many Fantasy managers are getting their captaincy strategy wrong.

Could putting our faith in full backs such as Aleksandar Kolarov be the surprise antidote? Bowstring the Carp certainly thinks so in his analysis of how full- backs have been dominating bonus points so far.

One factor in so many botched captaincy moves is the lack of home wins so far this season. The Governor, however, believes that such results are not far around the corner and urges patience with the strategy of favouring those with home advantage.

Another urging patience is Jaffalicious who reckons Fantasy managers should save their transfer in FPL this week, as it may come in handy over the international break.

Catching price changes, however, can make waiting difficult. For those wanting to time their transfers just right, Arbroath has revealed the exact times when FPL price changes happen this season. Meanwhile, Shakhtar Senseless offered a reminder of the importance of playing the market correctly during the first half of the season to build team value.

Such forward thinking doesn’t take into account the fickle hand of fate, though, says Far Queue’s in his look at how the best-laid plans can so easily go array.

The Members Tables

For those on the look out for attacking midfielders Wakey has the latest run down of those who are the most involved in the penalty box. There are more attacking midfielders to consider in my first goals imminent table of the season, looking at those who are arguably due a goal.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing the safety score was 33, which saw 147 players depart and 2,543 remain.

The draw for the qualifying second round of Jaffalicious’s FFS UEFA Champions League themed tournament, which takes place in Gameweek 4, has now been made. Eye catching match ups include Van Kinkert Delarosa against Greenwindmill and Innsie taking on Mata is The Juan.

Euan Thompson leads Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league. Three of this 243 strong league are now in the top 50,000 in FPL.

In AZ’s cash league, Kieran Walsh remains top of the standings. His ‘all out attack’ chip helped him to a reasonable score of 56 in Gameweek 3. Colin Bothwell is in second.

Andy continues to top the FFScout Moderators and Contributors League.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Quick question: I understand that stats are pretty much the only concrete evidence that you can get regarding a player's performance, but why is it that people get so bogged down in the smallest of stats and look at their tables in order to make a decision? This is not me taking a swipe at any of the paying members of FFS, but I just want to understand the rationale behind inspecting something in the most minute of details and that also for something as simple as FPL.

You're replying to my Deeney/C.Wilson post, and I'd be happy to answer.

Callum Wilson scored a hat trick against West Ham. They're not quite Burnley but they're trying.

The question I asked was not "which player should go in my WC team, as transfer cost is no object?"
The question i asked was "Is it worth a FT to swap out Deeney for C.Wilson?"

Two questions, with the same objective in mind, but with different implications for my team.
To frame my question fairly, I mentioned that Deeney has better stats (he certainly does) but Wilson has a more favorable slate of fixtures ahead.

As you are not privy to the member stats, I value your answer less than others who can know what I'm asking.

No it's not in reply to your post, I'm just talking about the general theme on here, what with people keeping their tables to heart. And yes, I completely understood your question so I'm surprised with your annoyance at someone who was trying to give you an answer when others, who are paying members, chose to ignore you. If you really didn't want 'worthless' answers in the first place from idiots like me, why not just address it to those who seem more knowledgable on these stats? You sounded like a petulant child in all honesty.

To shoot straight here, your reasoning was something like "3 goals vs. one assist, who needs stats?" and I answered you directly.

Go have a look on this site if you want to know why anyone would want to look at stats:
          http://www.plfantasy.com/

Or have a look at my FPL OR history, and see if you can guess which season I began looking into stats myself.

That's exactly what I do as well, which is why the meticulous focus on the most minute of stats for what is really a bit of light entertainment like FPL seems bizarre to me. Apologies if I've offended any members, but just wanted to get it off my chest.

But in the last 25 days you've made 380 posts. That's a little over 15 per day, or 1 every 4 minutes. That's a lot of time to waste for someone who doesn't like wasting time on fpl.

The members area actually speeds up the decision making. So stats help you save time, not waste.

A lot of people, like myself, play fpl for cash so it helps to win momey. Plus I work nights and come on here at work only most of the time so technically I get paid to use ffs, so not a waste of time at all.

If you're asking why people use statistics, it's because they want to make the right decision and concrete numbers can provide insight and accuracy that one's eyes simply cannot.

If you're asking why people care enough about making the right decision then I question why you're on a Fantasy Football forum at 1am!

What are you trying to say exactly.....that people shouldn't be members and pay for stats to aid them in FPL?

A game that is fun, and can be made more fun by the use of these stats, and help them win their mini leagues and achieve as high a ranking as possible.

"Rather than making fpl your life".. Why does looking at stats and tables mean they're making fpl their life?

"I'm not here to mull over my team".. but you've made several RMT posts yourself?

How do you know people are getting bogged down in it? Sorry but i just don't understand what this post is about. Everyone plays the game a different way, you don't have to like using stats, but others do. What's the fuss about it.

It seems like you're new to FPL and maybe don't understand why others take it so seriously. It's because they have mini-leagues to win and money and want to get good ranks. They can do that and also post about the stats e.t.c. without it taking over their life, you don't really monitor how often they're on here, or the fact they aren't thinking about fpl when they log off.

Absolutely not Demi, I think you've misconstrued what I'm saying. My point was that what seems to be a game of basic instinct and risk-taking seems to have been turned into something based on deep statistical analysis, something which I find bizarre but did not go as far as criticising.

With regards to my RMT posts that many have alluded to, it's all been based on trying to gather opinions from people rather than treat FPL as the be all and end all. I appreciate the validity of your points, but the essence of my argument was that instinct should dictate would people decide to do over anything else.

        1. Demí

Okay i see, but i still think a couple of the points in my post answered some of what points you're trying to make.

e.g. i said just because people use stats, doesn't mean their treating fpl as the be all and end all. some people enjoy looking at stats, and it's just another measure used to help pick their team and do their transfers.

You say it is a game of basic instinct and risk taking, but surely it's not all that. there are other contributing factors, and stats can help make your decisions easier.

at the end of the day, you are criticising the act of deep statistical analysis, but you may not realise how fun it is for that person or that it doesn't take as much time as you think.

Also, some people don't watch football much, and can't rely on instinct. not everyone knows a great deal about the players and stats can therefore help them.

+ alot of the people who are members have paid to support the site, and so they may as well make use of the stats if they have them at hand. a non-member can take the game more seriously than some members, depending on their leagues, experience and current team issues.

Of course, but as a maths student at university I can tell you for a fact that statistics aren't always black and white, which is why I strongly believe that FPL is the sort of game that requires basic instinct more than anything else.

Hold on. Are you suggesting posting RMT's is using your instinct? surely its seeking advice from others and not leaning on your own instincts.

Stats are the same but instead of asking others one consults the stats. Its basically the same thing but its grounded in solid truths rather than opinions.

BTW I think a healthy balance of all 3 (asking advice, trusting your gut, looking at stats) is good. Its fun too.

Wildcard Team - good to go?

    Butland / Fabianski

    Darmian / Kolarov / Gomez / Targett / Dawson

    Sanchez / Silva / Mahrez/ Albrighton / Ayew

    Aguero / Wilson / Diouf

    0.5m left in the bank

You'd be lucky if Westwood scored 5pts. In which case the AOA chip would be worth 3pts. I'd like to think it's worth more than that.

England reached the final of the EuroHockey Championships with a 2-1 victory over Spain at the Olympic Park.
Alex Danson opened the scoring for England only for Spain to level through Georgina Oliva with just over a minute of the third quarter remaining.
Lily Owsley scored the winner from close range eight minutes from the end.
England will play the Netherlands, who earlier defeated Germany 1-0, in Sunday's final at 16:00 BST.
The match will be shown live on BBC Two and the BBC Sport website, with commentary on BBC Radio 5live sports extra.
It is a second consecutive final for Danny Kerry's side, who will be looking to go one better than two years ago when they lost in a shootout to Germany.
England face a huge challenge on Sunday if they are to defeat the Olympic and world champions - and win the tournament for the first time since 1991, when they claimed their only EuroHockey title.
But Owsley vowed: "The Dutch are a fantastic team. We won't let them take the gold off us."
The hosts got off to a good start from a fourth-minute penalty corner when Danson scored her fourth goal of the tournament.
She pounced to volley home after Spain goalkeeper Maria Ruiz had blocked Kate Richardson-Walsh's shot.

Scattered showers continuing through the night, these mainly across Argyll. Elsewhere, it will become mainly dry with clear spells over Ayrshire and Lanarkshire.
