Our midweek “Weekly Shop” article arrives once again this afternoon, as we cast an eye over those players currently under consideration for our squads across weekly and daily Fantasy Football games.

This early scouting article is divided into two sections. The “Better Buys” will look at the key players for the week ahead, generally assessing those in-form assets who are braced for a promising fixture. The “Poundstretchers”, on the other hand, are the Gameweek prospects that should offer excellent value – often one-week punts, whose lower price tags enable funds to be spent on the big-hitters elsewhere in our lineups.

In today’s article, we assess what’s on offer in this week’s featured game, FantasyBet.

Better Buys

With Joe Hart only fit enough for the bench due to a back complaint last week, Willy Caballero earned a first start of the season between the sticks in Manchester City’s 4-1 loss at White Hart Lane. With Hart (5.5m in FantasyBet) expected to be re-installed for the visit of Newcastle, the Etihad side will be hoping to recapture the form that saw them keep five successive clean sheets before conceding twice against West Ham in Gameweek 6. Adrian (5m) is our other favored pick in goal this week. A trip to a Sunderland side that have failed to score a goal in their last three bodes well for the Hammers shot-stopper.

Although Crystal Palace don’t have the best defensive record under Alan Pardew, a clean sheet against Watford reminded us that the occasional shut-out is possible. Having scored and assisted against Villa at Selhurst Park already, we feel Scott Dann’s (5m) threat in the box makes the central defender a viable option at home to a West Brom side that has scored just twice on their travels this term.

With Sergio Aguero misfiring and David Silva sidelined for the third successive league outing last week, Kevin De Bruyne (10m) continued his fine form since arriving from Wolfsburg. The Belgian’s instant impact is evidence by goals in back-to-back league defeats to West Ham and Spurs, whilst he also scored and teed up an assist for Raheem Sterling (9m), in the recent cup win over Sunderland. The ex-Liverpool player is another to consider this week – visitors Newcastle have conceded at least twice on five of the first seven Gameweeks.

As mentioned in the Weekly Shop earlier in the season, while Riyad Mahrez (5.5m) was taking the plaudits, Jamie Vardy (6m) has been just as consistent in racking up the points and moves from the Poundstretcher category firmly into the Better Buys camp. The striker has scored five times in the last four and the brace against Arsenal underlined his fixture-proof appeal. As FantasyBet prices remain unchanged since the start of the season, both offer good value as the Foxes travel to Carrow Road, given that hosts Norwich are yet to keep a clean sheet this term.

Poundstretchers

Wayne Hennessey replaced Alex McCarthy and secured a first shut-out of the campaign for the Eagles against Watford so should retain his place for the visit of West Brom. Available for just 4m in FantasyBet, the Welshman looks a great enabler to allow more funds to be spent further up the field.

Aston Villa have not kept a clean sheet since their opening match at Bournemouth but host a Stoke side that have been unable to find the net on three occasions. Jordan Amavi’s (5m) assist at Liverpool was his second of the season and reinforces his credentials as the defensive asset of choice in Tim Sherwood’s backline.

Having served up four goals and 12 assists last season, Yannick Bolasie (6.5m) has yet to return attacking points this term. After a lack of minutes in the opening matches, he’s returned to the Palace XI once again and we fancy his chances of breaching a Baggies defence that shipped three goals to Everton on Monday evening.

Matt Ritchie’s (6m) volley against Sunderland in Bournemouth’s last home match reminded us of why the Cherries midfielder attracted so much pre-season interest. Callum Wilson’s long-term knee injury means that Ritchie’s contribution will be vital for Eddie Howe’s side as fellow newcomers Watford visit Dean Court. Wilson’s absence also makes Glenn Murray (6m) a viable option, with the striker likely to earn a first league start for the Cherries – seven goals and five assists in under 900 minutes last term shows the veteran is capable of filling the gap.

Rudy Gestede (6m) well-taken brace at Anfield – with one assisted by the aforementioned Amavi – took his tally to three goals in his last two appearances in all competitions. Against a Stoke side that have conceded in every match so far, Villa will be playing to Gestede’s strengths, so expect plenty of crosses and potentially another goal or two from the frontman.

These are the players on my radar ahead of this weekend’s weekly contests. On Friday, I’ll be back with a further look at this week’s FantasyBet game as I continue my quest for profit in the 2015/16 campaign.

UEFA Champions League - Matchday 2 Preview (compiled from fourfourtwo)

    Group A

    1. Malmo FF v Real Madrid

+ This is the first ever competitive game between Malmö and Real Madrid.

+ Malmö’s two previous Champions League games against a team from Madrid ended in a 7-0 aggregate defeat, it was against Atletico last season (5-0 loss in Spain, 2-0 defeat in Sweden).

+ Real Madrid are the sixth club Rafael Benitez has taken charge of in the Champions League, a joint record alongside Carlo Ancelotti.

+ Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 65 goals in 64 Champions League games with Real Madrid. He is currently the top score in the history of the competition (80 goals), three ahead of Lionel Messi (as of the start of MD2).

    .
    2. Shakhtar Donetsk v Paris Saint Germain

+ This is the first ever competitive game between Shakhtar and Paris SG.

+ No French side has ever beaten Shakhtar in Ukraine (D2 L3). The last French team to face the Donetsk side away from home were Toulouse in the Europa League group stages in October 2009. They lost 4-0.

+ Paris SG have won their four Champions League games against Ukrainian clubs (9 goals scored, 2 conceded). All of these were against Dinamo Kiev.

+ This will be Mircea Lucescu’s 99th Champions League game as manager. Only Alex Ferguson (190), Arsène Wenger (169), Carlo Ancelotti (141) and José Mourinho (128) have more games to their name.

    .
    Group B

    1. CSKA Moscow v PSV Eindhoven

+ PSV Eindhoven have won both of their games against CSKA Moscow. It was in the 2007/08 Champions League group stages (2-1 in Holland, 1-0 in Russia).

+ Both of CSKA’s home games against Dutch sides in European competition have ended in a 1-0 defeat (v Feyenoord in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup, v PSV in the 2007/08 Champions League).

+ PSV have never scored more than two goals in their last 31 Champions League games. The last time they did was in the 2005 semi-final second leg against AC Milan (3-1).

    .
    2. Manchester United v Wolfsburg

+ Manchester Utd and Wolfsburg’s only previous European encounter was in the 2009/10 Champions League group stages. The Red Devils won both games (2-1 at Old Trafford, 3-1 in Germany).

+ No German team has kept a clean sheet in their last 16 Champions League games against Manchester Utd. The last side to do so were Bayern Munich in March 2002 (0-0 at Old Trafford).

+ Bayern Munich were the last German team to beat Manchester Utd at Old Trafford in the Champions League. It was in April 2001 (1-0). Since then, German opposition have drawn three and lost six of their subsequent nine trips to Manchester Utd’s ground.

+ Wolfsburg have lost all three of their trips to England in European competition, conceding eight goals in the process.

+ Anthony Martial has yet to score in the Champions League (505 minutes).

    .
    Group C

    1. FC Astana v Galatasary

+ This is the first ever competitive game between Astana and Galatasaray.

+ It is also the first ever Champions League group stage game played in Kazakhstan.

    .
    2. Atletico Madrid v Benfica

+ This is the first ever competitive game between Atletico Madrid and Benfica.

+ Atletico Madrid are unbeaten at home in the Champions League under Diego Simeone (W9 D2). They have also only conceded two goals in those 11 games at the Calderon under the Argentinean manager.

+ Benfica have won none of their last 15 games in European competition against Spanish sides (D7 L8), their last victory against a team from Spain coming in September 1982 against Real Betis (2-1). That’s actually Benfica’s only ever away win versus a Spanish side.

    .
    Group D

    1. Borussia Moenchengladbach v Manchester City

+ Borussia Mönchengladbach knocked out Manchester City in their only previous European encounter. It was in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup quarter-finals (1-1 in England, 3-1 in Germany). Gladbach went on to win the trophy later that season.

+ No English club has ever beaten Gladbach in the German team’s own stadium (D1 L4). In fact, Gladbach have won their last four home games against English teams in European competition.

+ Manchester City have been drawn with a German side in each of their five Champions League group stage participations (Bayern Munich in 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2014/15; Dortmund in 2012/13, Gladbach in 2015/16).

+ None of Manchester City’s 29 Champions League games have ended goalless. They have only kept four clean sheets in these 29 games. Only Basel have played more games in the competition without ever registering a goalless draw.

    .
    2. Juventus v Sevilla

+ This is the first ever competitive game between Juventus and Sevilla.

+ Only one Spanish side has beaten Juventus in Turin in the Champions League: Deportivo La Coruna in March 2004 (1-0).

+ Juventus have lost only one of their last 11 Champions League games (W7 D3) it was the 2015 final against Barcelona.

+ Sevilla are taking part in their 3rd Champions League campaign. They have always gone past the group stages but never past the last 16.

+ Only one of Sevilla’s eight Champions League games away from home has ended in a draw (1-1 v CSKA Moscow in February 2010).

+ Alvaro Morata has scored in each of his last four Champions League games with Juventus. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (8) and Neymar (7) have more goals than the Spanish striker (6) in the competition in 2015.

There are certain players that people pick, regardless of form, because of past exploits.

Not saying Aguero is a bad player all of a sudden but he is clearly off form and I would have sold him if it wasnt for the great fixtures.

      Wont captain him though...

Sanchez looked like scoring. I saw some games and highlights and he looked threatening, hitting the post and being in on the action.
Aguero? He missed sitters and couldn't hit shots on target.

I can understand managers picking their favourite players who performed in the previous season. But surely you have to adapt. His price is too much of a burden i think. Kane had a good season last year, but ppl quick to ditch him this year when he didnt perform. Didnt understand the Aguero effect.

    If I have
    Sanchez Pedro Payet Mahrez Sinclair
    Aguero Gomis Wilson

Is it crazy to have both Vardy and Mahrez? Or should I swap Wilson for Ighalo or Berahino?

I recently said something to BF that got me thinking, so I’ve just done some digging on Morgan Schneiderlin and just how crucial he is defensively to with statistics to back this up.

Last the likes of Aldeweireld, Tadic and Graziano Pelle proved immense factors in a fantastic premier league run in 2014/15, when many predicted Southampton would struggle last year after losing Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Luke Shaw and Dejan Lovren, the stars of their previous campaign in 2013/14, in my opinion keeping hold of Morgan Schneiderlin was far more important with stats to back this. Last year the Saints actually improved defensively despite losing “crucial” components in their back four, only second to Chelsea in clean sheets. Once again last year it was the back four that were praised, earning places in the Team of the season. Where was Schneiderlin? This season Southampton have struggled defensively, and United have improved, this is completely Schneiderlin’s doing.

    Southampton without Schneiderlin 2014-Present:
10 GP, 15 GC, 4 CS’s (Norwich, Watford, West Brom, QPR) Avg. 1.5 GC per game

    Last year with Schneiderlin:

    35 starts, 23 GA, 12 CS. Avg. 0.6 GC’s per game.

Manchester United before Schneiderlin: 38 GP, 37 GA’s, 11 CS’s. Avg. GC per game 0.97.

Manchester United with Schneiderlin: 6 starts, 3 GA’s, 5 CS’s. Avg. GC per game 0.5.

The statistics 100% are in his favor, but that is not all he does. Look at Lovren at Southampton, now look at him at Pool without Schneiderlin.

Look at who is top. All smaller teams fullbacks, considering he plays for United who keep a lot more of the ball, that is actually quite impressive.

He can't get himself past Lanzini, and I think Slaven is fond of Moses.

Real benching problem this week. Had 2FT and had to swap out cout + ozil and change to 343 but Wilson injury stopped me.

    Bench one of:
    Ozil, Cout, KDB, payet, mahrez
    pelle, vardy, aguero

or play AoA and drop Dawson?

At the moment leaning towards benching pelle....

    B) Pedro -> Silva (-4)
    C) Pedro -> Wally (-4)
    D) Pedro & Mane -> Wally & Yaya (-8)
