Harry Kane returns to form in resounding fashion as Spurs take advantage of Bournemouth’s defensive frailties. Mesut Ozil strengthens his case for inclusion as Arsene Wenger rotates up top again, Odion Ighalo continues to bring home the points, whilst Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher throws his hat into the ring as a budget alternative for our three-man frontlines. Here’s the lessons learned from this weekend’s action….

Kane has made a statement…
The Tottenham forward threw his hat in the ring as a contender for our three-man frontlines by racking up a hat-trick against Bournemouth’s leaky backline. Just like Alexis Sanchez, Kane finally backed up his underlying numbers after a frustrating first few months and with his confidence on the up, he now welcomes managerless Villa to the Lane. Granted, he has Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea to follow but as we’ve seen last season, a Kane is fixture-proof when firing on all cylinders.

Rotation leaves the door open for Ozil…
Olivier Giroud was finally rewarded for his displays off the bench last Saturday as Theo Walcott’s run of six successive league starts came to an end. The Frenchman’s opener against Everton – his fourth in the last six Gameweeks, despite limited pitch time – vindicated his manager’s decision and with the Gunners level on points at the summit, Arsene Wenger’s rotation up top is clearly paying off. Mesut Ozil showed just why he’s becoming increasingly popular amongst Fantasy managers with a seventh assist of the season against the Toffees and with Walcott’s minutes once again a concern, the German’s security of starts will surely turn a few more heads.

Ighalo is the five-man midfield enabler…
The Watford budget frontman just keeps on delivering. Ighalo provided assists for both the Hornets’ goals in a surprise 2-0 win at Stoke as Quique Sanchez Flores’ side brought their hosts’ three-match winning streak to an end. Ighalo has played a part in 100% of Watford’s goals when on the pitch and has now risen to third in the FPL forward standings – at just 5.3, his acquisition looks a no-brainer for those determined to free up funds to splash the cash in midfield.

Big Sam needs to keep Fletcher fit…
It’s two goals and an assist from the Scot in the last three Gameweeks now as Sunderland’s fight for survival starts to finally pick up pace. Fletcher’s notorious fragility has limited his minutes in recent seasons but, as evidenced by his record between 2010/11 and 2012/13, where he served up double-figure goal hauls in three successive seasons, he’s more than capable of producing. If Sam Allardyce is to steer his new side to safety, the Wearsiders need to somehow keep Fletcher out of the treatment room.

Carroll could yet be a factor…
Emerging from the bench to grab a late winner at home to Chelsea, the Hammers frontman is edging ever-closer to a first start under Slaven Bilic. West Ham’s superb start to the season has seen them score 22 times – second only to City – yet first-choice forward Diafra Sakho has played a part in just four of those strikes, courtesy of three goals and an assist. Carroll already has a goal and assist in just 83 minutes off the bench but as he builds up his match sharpness following months on the sidelines, it surely won’t be too long before he’s handed a first XI opportunity.

Schlupp and Simpson are becoming Foxes options…
Leicester’s 5-2 home loss to Arsenal in Gameweek 7 has clearly had an impact on their defensive set-up. Since then, Claudio Ranieri has started Danny Simpson at right-back in each of the last three league matches and, at a price of 3.9, he offers us the cheapest starting defender in the FPL game. Meanwhile, the installation of Christian Fuchs on the opposite side of defence has allowed Jeffrey Schlupp an out of position berth on the left of midfield. One clean sheet in ten is hardly worthy investing in for their defensive potential alone but Simpson and Schlupp’s appeal is clearly on the rise.

The Cherries are the new whipping boys…
It’s five goals against in each of the last two Gameweeks as life in the top-flight suddenly gets grim for the Championship winners. With his side decimated by injuries to the likes of Callum Wilson, Max Gradel and Tommy Elphick, Eddie Howe is struggling to strike a balance as Bournemouth slip precariously nearer to the bottom three. A weekend trip to Southampton hands Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle the chance to wreak havoc and with Swansea, Everton, Chelsea and United also in the next six, Howe has a task on his hands to keep his side out of the drop zone.

The Capital One Cup has its uses….
As many as nine players are facing one-match bans this week after an eventful round of fixtures. Luckily for all but two of those players (Newcastle pair Jack Colback and Fabricio Coloccini), those suspensions will be served in the midweek cup clashes – not only will the likes of Sadio Mane be available for the home clash with Bournemouth on Sunday, he’s be free to put his feet up in midweek when Southampton host Villa at St Mary’s. For as much as the extra schedule can wreak havoc with rest and rotation, sometimes the domestic cups can bail out our players and serve as a buffer for those pesky cards accumulated during league action.

Milner could kick on under Klopp….
The summer signing from City seems to have adapted immediately to Jurgen Klopp’s “Gegenpressing” tactic. Whilst Philippe Coutinho struggled to spark his side into life, Milner created five chances against Southampton and bagged an assist for Christian Benteke’s opener – he’s now served up points in three of the last four and is the Reds’ joint-top scorer in FPL. Milner’s dynamic displays look tailor-made for Klopp’s approach and his early performances suggest he’ll be one of the main beneficiaries of the post-Brendan Rodgers era.

Jagielka’s absence could force a Toffees reassessment…
The Everton centre-half was ruled out for around eight weeks earlier today after sustaining a knee injury in the weekend loss at Arsenal. The Jagielka news comes at a time when Roberto Martinez’ men are set to embark on a superb run of fixtures, with new boy Ramiro Funes Mori set to fill the space vacated alongside John Stones. Given that Jagielka sits amongst the top three defenders for CBI (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) this season, though, it remains to be seen just how much his loss will diminish their defensive appeal.

Nyom against free scoring West Ham, or Walcott (doubt starter) playing the counter. Your decision, but Nyom is great after 14 (planning long term), and Ozil has a great December to deliver.

Any thoughts on 3-5-2 vs 3-4-3? With Ighalo in excellent form and so many midfielder vying for a spot it seems like a five man midfield is a good bet right now...

True. However, it also means you already have Ighalo in place as an Aguero enabler. Structure wise Kun + Ighalo + another makes sense to me...

It depends on your players really... I'm stuck with Mata atm and I'm probably going to bench him in order to play Ighalo.

I'm close to switching to 3-5-2. There are just too many solid midfield options compared to forwards, and the comparative difference in price is also leaning heavily towards midfielders

My question here is, do you think Van Dijk will be a revelation this season or just a one hit wonder?

            Is he undervalued at 5.5?

Is there anything in between? Not a one hit wonder and not a revelation. Just a defender with good goal threat and okay CS potential.

Hahaha good point, could very well be, but he managed 30 points in just 5 fixtures with only one CS, if they start getting CS, he could definetely break it.

May be a bit biased since I own him but with Young back, so I have read, he could play on the left pushing Martial up top. Rooney/Herrera in the hole and Mata to the right. Looks like Rooney is undroppable so he would be in the hole (I would drop personally for a few games).

Please LVG, see sense dude. Even give Depay another chance to shine. Martial is wasted out there and Rooney, well, is Rooney.

To all those saying VVD to any defence related question, Southampton have conceded the most shots in the box in the last 2 matches. They do have very easy fixtures but they're still nowhere near last year's standards. I'm still skeptical.

It's a fair point, Beavis. I think there are two factors to consider, for future consideration:

1.) Easier fixtures for Soton in the future
2.) VvD is a goal threat. I watched the game against Pool (as did most of us, prolly), and seemed to be quite a threat on set pieces and scrambles in front of the goal.

Yeah goal threat is definitely a consideration, no disputing that. For me though CS are always the priority so I'm looking at that first. With these fixtures though you'd still expect them to keep a few, just being cautious...

This is a fair point. However, stats-wise West Brom also not attractive, but keeps getting CSs. Sometimes a gut feel with a bit of stat-assurance is enough.

                They're seduced by goal threat

tbf they played Leicester and Liverpool

True that, they only got 1CS in the last 5 games I believe and he still managed like 30 points thanks to the goal threat, thing is, if he made that much points no defending well, what could happen if they manage to start getting CSs

What are peoples thoughts on Eric Dier? Playing in midfield but still classed as a defender so would get a clean sheet bonus and spurs defence is the joint best at the moment. I know Alderwiereld is the same price but he is owned by others in my league who I am trying to catch up. Should I stick with the crowd and not have a chance to catch up or take the risk and put in Dier in the hope that he gets the odd assist/goal?

                    oh I noticed Wakey

Yaya was ahead of him most of the time, which is the problem with Yaya in that role

Yaya is becoming a problem for City IMO

Bony played that way at the start of last season for the Swans. A lot of FPLers got caught out with it...it's more of a midfield role.

He's very good at it and it allows the midfield picks to get in the goals more...just as happened with the Swans mids early on last year.

Pellegrini could of course play him right up front but so far it's been Sterling and then KDB with Bony well behind.

Ohhh. That is interesting. Hmmm. Who do you think wins out of the Lukaku vs Bony vs Kane conundrum Wakey?

For Bony see above answer...He might get played right up front or could carry on further behind...I'd risk Bony because even if he's further behind he might have a share of pts from four or five goals...

He was still the furthest forward when a meaningful attack took place. I think it was just a result of man city not providing him enough service early on in the game

                      there was definitely that

it's why Pellegrini went defensive in the 2nd half. City couldn't keep the ball, which also meant that often Bony had come deep to hunt it

also he was up against Smalling yesterday, it'll be Bassong or Martin on Saturday

Oh aye...he'll still get his chances....Most of the City players do. It's just that he sometimes isn't played as an out and out striker in a straight swap for Aguero as we assume.

I know why Monk and now Pell do it...he's a bull of a man who's great at releasing the mids...as well as being a striker...similar to Yaya when he plays CDM...allegedly.

A Villa at home as well. Hmmmmm. Would be lovely to get him on board. Costa to Kane for a -4? (Don't even ask what Costa is doing in my team anyways.)

Would taking a -4 for Martial & Sako > Bony & Eriksen be a good idea?

This would provide me with a benching headache, but AOT chip this weekend overcomes a bad backline and gives a front 8 of KDB, Sanchez, Mahrez, Mane, Eriksen, Bony, Pelle, Vardy.

Makes sense? Or is there a smarter option?

Its all about points . Sometimes go with gut will pay big time , sometimes not. Generally taking a hit to bring in a Cpt choice is a wise decision ,,,, sometimes , risk = reward

This is the first season that I've tried to avoid the 'guts' and fixate solely on the stats. Can't say it's worked perfectly so far, so maybe I'm needing to bring in some gutsy balancing.

Gonna go ahead with it and avoid a week long headache!

Thing is, going with stats purely is going with history, it is a fair guide but it does not predict the future. Also, fixating on stats takes the fun out of this game. To each their own though, so many ways we can play this. Ground rule is that we should get enjoyment out of it.

Thinking about saving a transfer this week. Not sure who to play out of Dawson and Huth as well.

                    Myhill, Rudd.
                    Dawson, Bellerin, Cedric, Huth, Francis.
                    Sanchez, KdB, Mane, Mahrez, Bentaleb.
                    Lukaku, Pelle, Vardy.

Sarje , interested to see you still have Bentaleb . Still on my WC radar as a filler.

Really a coin flip Huth and Dawson , leaning towards Dawson

Thinking of taking a -4 hit in Costa & Ighalo to Kane & Lukaku to get this team for GW 11

                    Myhill

                    Dier - Darmian - Kompany

                    Mahrez - Payet - Sanchez - KDB

                    Pelle - Lukaku - Kane

                    Worth it??
