634x258 Suspensions

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle is the most high profile of this week’s Suspension Tightrope protagonists after collecting a fifth yellow card of the campaign in yesterday’s home loss to Stoke.

The Italian will now miss next weekend’s trip to the Etihad and, although he will return in time for a plum home clash against Villa in Gameweek 15, it’s fair to say the exodus is picking up pace – over 120,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have already parted company as we scramble to bring in the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Sergio Aguero.

Pelle earned a late caution for kicking the ball away as his barren run continued – he’s scored just once in the last five Gameweeks. Post-match, Ronaldo Koeman was unhappy over the Italian’s lack of self-restraint:

“It’s all about the frustration of the player. He was not playing well, he was not scoring and the team was not winning, but you have to control yourself always. That’s difficult, we know. But, okay, if it doesn’t happen today maybe it happens next week. It’s always a question if you are one booking from a suspension. It’s always when, when, when it happens. Okay, normally you have to control yourself. He knows. We know. We have to accept it and we will play another [number] nine next week.”

Pelle is one of six players to succumb to a one-match Tightrope ban so far. Liverpool will be devoid of Lucas’ services for their home encounter against Swansea next weekend. Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey will also miss that Anfield encounter – handed the role in “the hole” at home to Bournemouth, the former Red bagged himself a goal and assist before earning his fifth yellow of the season.

Over at the Hawthorns, Tony Pulis has decisions to make at left-back after Chris Brunt picked up his fifth booking in the Baggies’ home win over Arsenal – the Northern Ireland international now misses next weekend’s trip to West Ham. Mark Noble will also be unavailable for that one after earning his fifth yellow in today’s loss at White Hart Lane, whilst Dele Alli will be absent as Spurs host Chelsea next weekend.

There are now 17 players on this week’s Tightrope, with Gameweek 13 handing us five new entries. Bournemouth playmaker Matt Ritchie, Leicester centre-half Robert Huth, Norwich’s Seb Bassong and Liverpool pair Emre Can and Nathaniel Clyne are the men in question.

Palace duo Wilfried Zaha and Yohan Cabaye, along with Sunderland’s Billy Jones, could yet topple of this week’s Tightrope – all three go into tomorrow’s night’s match at Slehurst Park on four yellows apiece.

In terms of newly-available players, Tottenham will welcome back Erik Lamela for next week’s trip to Stamford Bridge after the Argentine served a one-match ban at home to West Ham earlier today. West Brom will have Gareth McAuley available for their clash with the Hammers after the Irishman missed yesterday’s win over Arsenal.

Slaven Bilic’s side, meanwhile, will be without the services of James Collins once again – the Welshman serves the last of a three-match ban against the Baggies.

Thought: The ballon d'or FOR THIS SEASON might be finally won by someone other than Ronaldo or Messi for the first time in years. I know it's still VERY early in the season, but as of right now surely one of Neymar or Suarez should win it.

Would be great if one of them won it.

Ballon d'or is given on calendar year and this season is only 1/3rd done so its quite early.
This season top performers until now -
                Neymar
                Lewandoski
                Saurez
                Vardy

Aubemayang deserves a shout I think.

Yeah I agree but when was the last time that neither Messi or Ronaldo were mentioned in that top 5? Just made me think they might finally not win it.

Kaka won it last I think...

he was pushed off the ball too easily - his form and underlying stats are dipping - he has the sort of short term impact you would expect from a high quality signing and played well with more responsibility in aguero's absence - but he is touching down now to find his level for the season now i think - not a bad choice but better ones around -remember city are weak without their spine hart-kompany-toure-silva-aguero if they are fit city will play well and if they are fit de bruye will have less chances and more off ball running to do ....i will sell him for coutinhio if the brazilians scan turns out ok ....

    Smalling / Rose / Dawson / Moreno / Janmaat
    Mahrez / KDB / Sanchez / Ozil / Wanyama
    Kane / Vardy / Lukaku

Are these decent moves? Potential planning for after SOT.

    Vardy > Kun
    Janmaat > Simpson
    KDB > Lanzini

should have had assist if Santi didn't trip over the turd on the penalty spot...and another assist had Ozil not hit post?

Yeah, I mean bar the penalty I'm reluctant to say 'if this, if that' because it's hard to draw a line sometimes, but I agree that he could easily have come away with points.

People will still say he's tired because he scored 2pts, but I didn't think that watching the game.

And yes, he is a bit of a 'flat track bully'. I can see him putting at least one of these teams to the sword.

Depends on your budget and appetite for risk imo.
      A) Not nailed
      B) Occasional goal/assist v. occasional yellow card and 1-point GW
      C) Faithfully chalks up 2 points each week

Mulled over the same trio last week. Ultimately chose Surman based on price (really wanted the 0.1 saving v Gosling) and apparent predictability. Valar makes a fair point below though, re Gosling and Arter being back in the lineup. Good luck 🙂

Surman + Arter make Gosling a good option since he gets to play very advanced.. makes a him a very viable option as a 5th mid as long as both of those two stay fit. Bournemouth are probably one of the unluckiest team in recent memory tbh.. they play really good attacking football.

What do we reckon here guys? 3 red arrows in a row. Costa needs to go, but who should I prioritise?

    A: Costa —> Lukaku (free)
B: Costa & Mane —> Aguero & Alli (-4; Alli is suspended but great value for 5.0)
C: Costa, Igahlo & De Bruyne —> Lukaku, Aguero, Surman (-8)
    D: Other?

Just to put it out there, why get a Bournemouth mid?

Fixtures from now till the end of the Xmas rotation period as follows...

EVE, che, MUN, wba, CPL, ars, lei

I'd look elsewhere for a cheap mid, preferably one with strong fixtures over the busy Xmas period, this is the time you'll actually need your 5th mid.

It would be ideal to have as much cash itb. And the BOU mids are the only real cheap ones with a decent amount of goal threat.

But with that saying, they probably won't score many goals with those fixtures.

Regarding Lingard: Strong goal threat and strong fixtures have to go hand in hand with strong possibility of minutes too Ryan 😉

Morrison is probably the best out of that lot in terms of value for money (remember, this is a 5th mid in a 3-4-3)

Lingard will probably get rotated during Xmas. Surely you would want someone nailed for that period?

Keep in mind that in real life, Bournemouth should have a ticker that is completely red. Every game will be a challenge for them, even more so when they get exposed for their lack of depth when they start playing 3 games a week.

I personally don't think fixtures should be a consideration, it is impossible to predict when you'll need to rely on them, it could be for CPL (a good fixture) or it could be the following week (ars).

I lived in NZ for about 7 months Ryan. Quite a large Scottish population. I'm guessing they would like the familiarity and the nod to home of the Union Jack.

Are there any flags with particularly symbolism that might be favoured by the Maori population?

Top left has a koru shape, very much a maori shape. Ferns also have Maori symbolism.

The South Island are more traditional and don't like change, strong Scottish roots in Otago/Southland in particular. The North Island is more progressive and are perhaps more willing to part ways with British heritage.

Yeah ok. That's interesting. I thought the top left looked like a Maori shape but I don't know enough to be sure.

I suppose the fern is mainstream enough to have appeal across the board. If it's on the ABs shirt it must be!

Your characterisation of the islands fit as the South is not really all that developed is it? Lots of beautiful untouched terrain. God that place is gorgeous...

I think the weather is the only real drawback, everything else is exactly what you want in a city I think.

The South Island has only 1m people living in it so I guess it seems undeveloped. Christchurch is still a mess because of the earthquakes as well which doesn't help

                  Yeah, the winter blows...

I visited Christchurch and was extremely sad. This was in 2013.

Went to the information tourist shop and the lady was pointing out all these things that *used* to be there.

I had hoped to see the shoots of recovery, but if they were there they weren't visible.

Me describing it as undeveloped certainly wasn't a criticism. I drove up to Milford Sound!

Progress is still slow in Christchurch, so much to rebuild, and the process is slow and drawn out.

A lot of untouched beauty in the South Island, I hope it continues to maintain that and shun development at every opportunity.

It's still just a flag. The British heritage certainly won't disappear.
As a Canadian, I'd say that the system of law, and of government are much more important, and meaningful, from a heritage perspective.

I agree entirely. I think we should have just as much courage as you guys showed when you changed your flag. I guess the issue is that most aren't convinced by the alternative designs. The Canadian flag seems so perfect

The thing is that no flag will ever be perfect. The flag was changed long before I was around, but there was a fair amount of opposition to it. If there would have been a NZ-style referendum, then we would still have a union jack.

The first referendum is for the best alternative design. Then the second referendum will put the best design against the current flag. I think thats the best way to enforce change, but even then, I think most will stick with the current flag by default.
