It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Mesut Ozil leads the field with 20% of the vote this Gameweek, having delivered two goals and nine assists in his last eight outings. In the absence of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla, more emphasis will be on the 9.3-priced German to exert his influence during Arsenal’s home tie against Sunderland. The Gunners’ attacking unit will be emboldened in the knowledge that no team has conceded more away goals (18) than the Black Cats.

Romelu Lukaku has netted five goals in four league ties and graced the scoresheet in Everton’s midweek League Cup clash, encouraging 16% of voters to hand him the captain’s armband. The Toffees’ home tie against Crystal Palace looks favourable on paper, yet the Eagles boast the second-best defensive record away from home (five goals conceded).

City’s Kevin De Bruyne attracted an 9% backing by virtue of three goals and as many assists in his last two outings across all competitions – this afternoon’s news that Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of the trip to the Britannia will strengthen the Belgian’s appeal for some.

Notwithstanding his six consecutive blanks, Eden Hazard (8%) still finds a place in our top five. The former Lille winger turned out solid performances in his previous two league starts and now enjoys a home encounter against Bournemouth. Although the Cherries have offered more attacking threat of late, no team has surrendered more big chances (22) in road fixtures.

Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo (5%) go stride for stride in the Captain Poll. Pitted against a Swansea City defence that conceded eight goals in their last four home ties, Vardy could well extend his scoring streak to 12 matches. As for Ighalo, he’ll look to profit from a Norwich City back line that ranks top for shots inside the box conceded (85) in road fixtures. Harry Kane (4%) was unable to breach Chelsea’s resilient defence last time out but should have more joy against West Bromwich Albion, given that they chart top for home goals conceded (13).

Doubtless Philippe Coutinho – who scooped 4% of the vote – would place higher in our Captain Poll if he hadn’t been nursing a hamstring injury over the last week or so. The ex-Inter Milan starlet recorded four goals and one assist in his last three starts but looks likely to miss the Newcastle encounter, judging by Jurgen Klopp’s comments this afternoon.

I'd like to think so, but Klopp's comments about the same team starting worry me.

He can do damage from the bench either way.

    Butland
    Bellerin, Bertrand, Evans
    Mahrez, Ozil, De Bruyne, Deulofeu
    Aguero, Vardy, Ighalo

(Ruddy; Ward, Wollscheid, Sanchez) 1 FT , £0 itb

Rate my plan out of 10.

    This week: Aguero -> Kane
    Next week: Sanchez -> Coutinho

That would leave me with 6.0 itb which I could use to get Aguero/Sturridge/Sanchez/Hazard later this month.

Guys, what would you advice with 1 FT & 2.8m itb?

    Butland
    Moreno / Kolarov / Bellerin
    Sanchez* / Mahrez / KDB / Ozil
    Vardy / Lukaku / Kane
    (Mccarthy / Rojo* / Surman / Targett)

    Sanchez ->
    A) Hazard
    B) Silva

(Reposting as i got lost in the previous page)

    Hi.
Got Alderweireld and Coutinho(at a -4) at the start of the week once Sanchez was injured, and now Coutinho might not play, his midfield backup being Wanyama.

    Current team:
    Myhill
    Stones Bellerin Alderweireld
Barkley KdB Mahrez Coutinho(probably won't play so will get subbed)
    Vardy Giroud Lukaku

    Subs: Nyom, Wanyama, Wollschied

On a -4 right now and the Coutinho looks like a waste this week 🙁 (Damn you Klopp ;-;)

Stick with the team or take another hit? Subs don't look like they can get any more than 2 points.
Or hope Wanyama does well and move him ahead of Nyom?

    Thanks

Leave as is. Nyom more likely a clean sheet than Wanyama scoring or assisting in my opinion. Don't take another hit either...

So decided to take a hit. Going to keep Aguero, but sell Westwood. This gives me the luxury of having 4.8 to spend on any player of my choice. Who should I go for? Josh King would have been a transfer written in the stars, however, he plays Chelsea away, followed by United at home.

Any spicy options kicking around in some of the smaller teams which I may well have missed?

I understand people holding Aguero. But he's likely to play champs league midweek, and then could face another rest at the weekend. And holding all week will likely be a 0.3 TV drop. Hard if you faced the same with Sanchez

With Coutinho likely to be out.

Should I do Coutinho to Barkley with my FT, which I was planning on saving?

Dier will probably come off the bench if he doesn't feature.

Other mids are KDB, Mahrez, Ozil and 4.4

Gosling has looked v dangerous so more upside but huth probably slightly better expectation.

C1C. How many minutes did Sturridge and Bentekke get? Assuming Tekkers came on for him.

Cheers. Based on that looks likely Tekkers start ahead of Sturridge or do you think Sturridge will start?

        Here's how I'm shaping up:

        De Gea
        Kolarov Moreno Rose
De Bruyne Sanchez (!) Ozil Mahrez
        Lukaku Kane Vardy

        McCarthy Westwood Francis Gomez

Will likely do Sanchez > Barkley. Anyone else you would get over him?

Captaincy between Lukaku and Kane I think.

        Thoughts?

          Maybe Eriksen...

Kane for me as (C) mate.

Not keen on Eriksen. Doesn't seem to ever do it in my team, but always ends up with a decent points total at the end of the season.

Don't want to ruin the enjoyment I've been getting from our recent performance by investing in one of our attackers.

Since Suarez has left, none have really tempted me when it comes to FPL.

Hazard really doesn't tempt me. People are buying him in the desperate hope that he scores and they can benefit. Nothing to suggest that will happen other than Bournemouth's poor form.

Fair enough. I'm holding off as well tbh, because I can bring KDB or silva in next week. But you already have Kdb so no other mid I'd be overly keen on. (Apart from Coutinho but obvs not till next week at the earliest)

Already (-4) and have Coutinho, Aguero, Kompany, Rojo

        Do I

        A) play with 10
        B) take another hit to do Rojo > Zouma / Darmian
        C) take another hit to do Aguero > Sturridge / Kane
