It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Despite drawing blanks in his last two outings, Harry Kane (27%) attracted the largest backing ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s home tie against Newcastle United. Although the Magpies pulled out an eye-catching win over Liverpool last time out, they still rank top in terms of goals conceded (30) throughout the course of the campaign. In addition, Kane has displayed a propensity for explosive returns during his fledgling career, notching two or more goals on seven occasions.

Romelu Lukaku occupies second spot with a 23% share of the vote. The Everton marksman currently places second in the overall scoring charts (11 goals), having netted in his last five starts. No side has managed fewer clean sheets than Norwich City (one), so there’s every chance Lukaku will perpetuate his streak when Everton make the trip to Carrow Road. Given that the Merseysiders carded eight goals in the previous three Gameweeks, Ross Barkley (1%) also finds a spot in our top ten.

The favourable nature of Manchester City’s home tie against managerless Swansea finds Kevin de Bruyne (17%) among the top three. The Sky Blues are out of sorts on their travels right now but remain a formidable force at the Etihad, having tallied six more home goals (23) than any other team. As such, David Silva (2%) – who scored a searing strike in midweek – serves as a viable differential pick.

Just over 8% of voters were swayed by Mesut Ozil’s consistency, considering that he hasn’t failed to deliver attacking returns since Gameweek 6. Playing behind a buoyant Olivier Giroud – who bagged a hat-trick in midweek – the German playmaker will be afforded short odds to register his 13th assist against a floundering Aston Villa side. Elsewhere in the Gunners camp, Aaron Ramsey’s switch to a central berth convinced just over 1% of voters to hand him the skipper’s armband.

Riyad Mahrez (3%) is the pick of Leicester’s much-vaunted duo ahead of their home encounter against Chelsea. The Blues rearguard posted four clean sheets in their last five fixtures across all competitions, ensuring that Jamie Vardy has dropped off the radar in our Captain Poll.

Odion Ighalo (3%) places third among forwards for total score (96) by virtue of his nine goals and five assists. The Watford frontman has drawn just three blanks since Gameweek 5 and will be relishing the opportunity to tackle Sunderland’s inconsistent defence at the Stadium of Light.

It's illogical, but Vardy will stop scoring at some point.

If you can time your pick right, you'll look like a genius.

      reasons against >

vardy is still very much a form player
giroud is in a team still adjusting without alexis and cazorla

i dont think you are gaining much by swapping them. vardy could just as easily match girouds score this week. The kind of scenario where i would do this would be e.g. vardy to a fully fit aguero, where i am confident that aguero could explosively outscore vardy.

but i just dont think giroud is tha much better than vardy right now, despite the hatrick

      A fellow Hazard owner eh?

I think if you can tin him for free, without other worries then still worth doing it. Ramsey would be my replacement. I sadly can't and have to just hope hopeless Haz is involved if Chels score.

Bad fixtures should in theory result less chances and if their conversion rate dips to the average they won't be nearly as good. Same thing happened with West Ham earlier in the season.

Don't really need a valuable player though, just purely who'll get more points over the next month.. Sterling could do a lot of damage against Swansea with Silva still returning to fitness and still suffering with ankles... despite being twice the player.

      I think Silva tbh

Haha, I'm going Sterling for what it's worth..

Silva's minutes will be managed, don't trust his ankle.. And Raheem is ready to become a consistent goal scorer!

Silva all day long for me.

It's a pyschological thing. You'll be happier picking up 5-10 points most weeks from Silva, even if Sterling's occasional 15er gives him the better overall score until Jan.

Our brains are just geared up to be more comfortable with consistency

Silva - he won't get taken off as consistently as Sterling will, Silva plays in the number 10 role with a full strength team. Silva has played consecutive matches after injury and is 'back'. I honestly don't think the choice is difficult mate

Sterling will be subbed more, Silva will be rested more (due to ankles and inability to play twice in 5 days)..

Silva will assist a lot more, Sterling will probably score more.

Silva's a better long term option no doubt, but for the next month, still Silva?

    10 - petrified

Aguero to Kane for -4 to reverse the tranny next week ?

Seems wasteful and playing scared ?!

    1. foley_fd
      • 11 Years

I agree, but apparently many on here feel Aguero is unlikely to return next week, or at least the likelihood is impossible to gauge.

So I think the key is whether you feel he will actually play next week.

If you do, then personally I wouldn't take a hit to ship out the best striker in the game.

Mané --> Coutinho / Alli the logical move?

    Butland
    Ballerina | Kolarov | Azpilicueta
    Özil | KDB (c) | Mahrez | Mané
    Ighalo | Lukaku | Vardy

    Rudd | Deulofeu | Francis | Huth [ 1 FT + 3.3m ITB + WC]
